Screw-ups don’t get second chances. That’s what Caitlin Malone believes when she returns to Oregon after failing her first Northstar Security assignment. When she inadvertently stumbles across a plot to steal deadly pathogens from the bio-lab near her hometown, she sees a chance at redemption.
USDA Forest Ranger, John ‘Mac’ MacAlistair, doesn’t want to babysit the motorcycle club holding their annual rally in his national forest. To make matters worse, Caitlin is attending the rally with Mac’s estranged uncle. Having her home again brings up feelings that are better left buried.
It’s early September. Any spark will send the dry timber into a raging fire. The terrorists are counting on that distraction to work in their favor. When Caitlin is trapped by the wildfire, her only hope of rescue is pinned on Mac, the man she's tried two years to forget. Before they can share their feelings, Mac and Caitlin must first escape the burning forest and stop the terrorists from releasing the deadly pathogens.

Caitlin Malone is one tough cookie. Oh, she doesn’t realize it yet. Not when her first assignment as a Northstar Security agent winds up getting her partner shot. Just a simply tracking job, but Caitlin’s inability to follow orders, and her impulsiveness, nearly gets Sloan dead. Disgraced, she is sent back to Oregon by her boss to talk to her father, a former Northstar partner, and to get her head on straight. But arriving at her father’s house in Oregon she finds he isn’t there. When her old flame and long-time friend, John MacAlistair, walks in the door she meets him with a shotgun, while he greets her with the news that her father is in the hospital. The bullet in his back that was too dangerous to remove when he was shot has moved.
Shocked, Caitlin is forced to accept that she may lose her father. Their strained relationship over the years after she lost her mother at seven years old, and her father lost his wife, was exacerbated by her father’s inability to understand his young daughter resulting in him dropping her in a small town in Oregon and extending his business trips over longer and longer periods until she saw him only rarely. It finally reached the breaking point when they fought, two years ago, over her taking a job at Northstar and moving to DC. Harsh words flowed, and Caitlin walked out the door. Of course, it was all made worse when John’s grandmother, who had been like a mother to Caitlin, dies and John took her to bed for her first time the night of the funeral – and then walked out the door and didn’t return.
Betrayals. First from an icy and distant father who taught her to be a hardass then pitched a fit when she followed in his footsteps, cutting her out of his life. And then her best friend John takes her and then leaves her. What else was she to do?
When a bike rally leads to Caitlin’s attempted murder and a massive forest fire set as a distraction so terrorists could rob a biotech lab for deadly pathogens, Caitlin has to drag her badly injured body across the mountains to reach safety. When John, a forest ranger, hears from his uncle that Caitlin is missing in the fire he has himself dropped into the fire zone to find her. What follows shows that, while Caitlin may not always be centered and focused, she is, as previously stated, one tough cookie.
Terrorists, a fire that has blown up out of control, and a mad rush across rugged territory makes this a fast moving, exciting tale. The characters are well written and believable. Besides the high-tension suspense we also watch as Caitlin learns to tear down the walls around herself and push back at a father who she wants desperately to love, but simply doesn’t know how. I can’t say that I completely agreed with the author’s take on the relationship and how the blame for the relationship issues between her and her father and her and John were handled, but I am sure there are those out there who don’t have such a brittle relationship with the concepts of love and family who will find it quite rewarding. Caitlin is immature in certain ways, but that immaturity is understandable and made me like her more.
I received “Proving Ground” from Reading Alley in exchange for a realistic review. All thoughts are my own.
I love a good mystery and when you throw in some awesome romance, well you have created a perfect book for me. Proving Ground by Stanalei Fletcher is one of those perfect books. I LOVED this story. I was completely captivated and spellbound by Proving Ground from page one all the way to end. I could not put this book down. I had to be reminded by my husband it was time to get out of the bath tub a couple of nights. I was too engrossed to have any idea what time it was.
Caitlin Malone so wants to follow in her Dad's footsteps working for Northstar Security. Her first mission does not go as planned and Caitlin is broken hearted with the thought that maybe she isn't cut out for it.
I loved Caitlin this girl really is one kick butt kind of girl with strong Independence and a determination to get through anything she has to. I really admired this girl. Not only is she strong and smart but she has the abilities to take out the bad guys when she has to and in some really creative ways.
John ‘Mac’ MacAlistair is not prepared to see his childhood friend Caitlin when she returns home. Mac finds himself in a position of having to go into a dangerous situation to try to help Caitlin out. If I was in trouble this certainly is one guy I would want to jump in to save me. He has great survival skills and a few creative ideas that saves both he and Caitlin a time or two.
I loved how these two worked together when times got tough. They have a really strong attraction for each other buy Mac doesn't want to give in to that attraction. He still thinks he should have brotherly feelings for the girl that he grew up with. However when he looks at Caitlin he doesn't see a sister. He sees a very attractive woman.
There are so darn many great scenes in this book. I was captivated by their adventure through the forest to try to out run the fire. Just when I thought they might be safe, something else would happen. There are some confrontations with the bad guys that are quite dramatic and full of suspense. Then there is the scenes where these two are so flammable they could almost out burn the forest fire. They have incredible chemistry.
There is a nice mix drama, suspense, mystery, and romance in Proving Ground. I found it to be a really great read. I can not wait to see what Ms Fletcher has came up with for the next book in the Northstar series. I know this is going to be one of those awesome series that I will want to get my hands on as soon as the next book is out.
I loved Stanalei Fletcher's writing style. She has a way of really drawing me into the storyline and holding me captive. The characters are well developed. She's done a great job of creating characters that are charismatic, full of charm, character, and each has an interesting past to add to the storyline.
I was given the opportunity to read this great story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Proving Ground.
An interesting listen with some action, lost love, family issues, drama and second chances. Caitlin is a strong woman but has an issue of thinking things out before she jumps which gets her into a mess with her job which puts her on leave. Her boss is an old time buddy of her fathers, he demands she goes home, she doesn’t want to for a few different reasons. Go home as order she does with her tail between her legs. On returning home she finds two things her father is in the hospital with issues from a long time accident from a bullet and the man she has always loved right in her face. He is the real reason she left years ago much against her father’s wishes. Her father told her if you take this job don’t come home….
Mr. Fletcher’s narration is good he does need to work a little on his women voices which are not bad just not a true female voice. He also needs to pause a little more to let you get the full effect. I am not staying it is bad by no means, and he didn’t race through it just needs a little more pause between characters, and what is going on around them. His normal voice is pleasant, it was a clear and clean audio with no background noises, no repeating of words and no volume changes. There were times when a little too much emotion was displayed and maybe not enough at other times. His male voices are wonderful, I always knew who was talking and what they were feeling. I thought his nurse was wonderful loved how she took control and you had no trouble understanding she meant business. I could not tell when breaks were taken, and I did enjoy his narration. He did bring the story a live and enjoyable. I thought it was worth my time and did enjoy the audio.
The author gives a good listen with interesting characters. It wasn’t a book I had trouble putting down but wasn’t a book I didn’t want to listen to. Her characters are likable, the plot was nice along with the action. Something was missing I can’t put my finger on it but it. I thought Caitlin needed to grow up a little, the story is a lot about me, me and what I want. She isn’t a team player and it maybe the reason I didn’t really care for her was because of the voice the narrator used for her. I did enjoy a lot of the scenes, along with the danger and excitement. Is it worth your time, yes it was entertaining and I did enjoy it. I enjoyed the mystery around the plot but didn’t understand why she didn’t tell them about the two men from the start or at least once Mac got to her. It was a long time before they started looking for the man who started it all. Caitlin just never has her head where it needs to be. There was a little humor and I really enjoyed it as well as the danger. It isn’t a story I got lost in but it is a good story.
If you enjoy a fast-paced adventure with a strong romantic theme, you’re going to love this book! Caitlin Malone returns to her hometown after a botched job with Northstar Security, a firm her father helped launch. There’s longstanding friction between father and daughter because of Caitlin’s decision to join the firm against his wishes.
But Caitlin’s tenuous relationship with her dad is nothing compared to the tension that erupts when she encounters John “Mac” MacAlister, a once platonic childhood friend. Several years older, Mac thought of himself as a quasi-big brother to Cait despite underlying feelings of a romantic nature between them. That eventually lead to passionate encounter, leaving Mac unable to forgive himself, and Caitlin confused and hurt.
This smoldering relationship, with all of its underlying tension, is at the heart of Proving Ground. But the romance is set amid a super-charged adventure that pits Cait and Mac against a bio-terrorist and a raging forest fire. They must work together in order to survive and that’s when the action and their relationship really heats up.
Stanalei Flechter delivers strong, believable characters who seep under your skin. From the moment Cait and Mac are on the page together, their attraction is combustible. Putting them in a perilous situation ratchets up the intensity in a manner that keeps you eagerly reading to see what happens next.
But it isn’t just the romance that makes this book work. I like my romantic reads with strong secondary character relationships and Proving Ground excels at that. From Cait troubled relationship with her father to Mac’s estranged Uncle Jack, there is plenty of character building. Proving Ground has the makings of a great series. I will definitely be looking forward to future releases from this author!
Proving Ground is a fast-paced thrill ride from start to finish! In Caitlin Malone, Stanalei Fletcher has created a heroine we can all root for; a young woman determined to step out of the shadow of her illustrious father and forge her own path as an expert operative for elite private security firm Northstar Security. The only problem is... well, there are any number of problems, really, but most of them stem from Caitlin's own near-crippling self-doubts. Is she strong enough? Is she good enough? Will she ever be really, truly, ready for the life she has chosen? A mission that goes badly south puts Caitlin back on probation and sends her home to Oregon to see her father... and Mac, the love she never really left behind. Her boss thinks he's giving Caitlin time to get her head together. Problem is, work's followed Caitlin home and time is something she doesn't have.
I really enjoyed Proving Ground. Too many romantic suspense novels have a plot that stretches the bounds of belief; this one felt all too real, with the ever-present bioterrorism threat driving Caitlin's actions. The only reason I can't quite give it five stars is that I struggled to warm to Mac; I wanted him to believe in Caitlin more, to tell her that HE knew that she could do anything she set her heart on. He spent a little too much time trying to protect her for my liking, especially when she'd just demonstrated how physically tough she could actually be after surviving a wilderness ordeal that would have taxed Bear Grylls himself.
Still, I'll give it 4 stars and I'll happily read anything else Stanalei Fletcher puts out; she's a great voice in romantic suspense!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for review through Reader’s Favorite.
Promising first book in a series (an audio review)
Several of my friends have been encouraging me to read Stanalei Fletcher’s Northstar Security Services books. I have them all, but I rarely have time to sit and read, so they were sitting quietly on my e-reader, patiently waiting. When I saw the first book was on audio? I pounced.
I want to address the narration first because it was problematic for me. Now, I understand that often authors have little or no control on who they are able to secure as a narrator. Given that the character of Caitlin Malone was clearly the main character, I was expecting a female narrator. Now, Sandra Brown uses male narrators for her thrillers, so I have heard this done. And Charles Henderson Norman was perfectly competent. He mispronounced a few words, but that’s me being picky. Certainly the errors didn’t pull me too far out of the story. Putting his work in context, I believe he did a good job. I certainly won’t hesitate to listen to another book narrated by him.
I love the romantic suspense subgenre of romance and this book was a good example of what can make a book enjoyable. I love kick-ass heroines and Caitlin is just such a woman. Occasionally she does questionable things, but she admits her mistakes and owns up to them, accepting the consequences. Winding up back in her hometown, on her father’s doorstep, is not her idea of fun. It is the true punishment it is meant to be.
But going home is never simple. She almost immediately runs into John “Mac” MacAlistair, the man she once gave her heart and body to. It turns out he’s been staying with her father and wants her to reunite with her estranged father. And Caitlin wants Mac to give Jack a chance for redemption. Mac blames his Uncle Jack for the death of Mac’s parents and hasn’t spoken to the man since.
Against this backdrop, there is a massive forest fire, a lethal virus, a terrorist, and a loving husband whose wife is dying. The synopsis of the book gives the reader a good idea of all the elements of the book, but the twists and turns are what draw the reader in. There are frequent point of view changes, and although they are clearly delineated, the listener has to pay attention. I liked that I got different people’s perspectives on this situation. Often in romance you only get the hero and heroine’s points of view. This book, as a suspense, benefits from showing diverse characters’ inner motivations and conflicts.
I enjoyed the book. Charles Henderson Norman’s Irish brogue was great and the story carried me through. Did I find all Caitlin’s actions realistic? Not necessarily, but that’s the great thing about fiction. I can’t wait to listen to the next book!
This is the first book in the Northstar Security series. It is yet to be seen if they will need to be read in the order of release.
I liked how this story was all about Caitlin not being perfect. Sure, she’s beautiful (, fit, and thin), but she’s got major issues in her family, love life, and career. Isn’t that a reminder to not judge the book by the cover?
Then there was the hint of paranormal with Caitlin’s second sight. Some believe in those things. Some don’t. I’m definitely in the first group, so this added a little layer of extra for me.
The relationship between Caitlin and Mac is sweet, frustrating, and sexy. I’m still smiling, but also would love to just smack him upside the head while I laugh at him. Ultimately, it was another terrific layer to a suspense-filled trek through the woods.
My final analysis: a few giggles and gasps in a thrill of a tale. I’m looking forward to reading (listening to) the next book in this series! Are we continuing in Washington DC with another agent, or another assignment with Caitlin?
Narration: The narrator is wonderful. His voice is soothing. I liked how he was able to convey the urgency of the dramatic scenes without causing undue stress to this driver. It was a perfect combination.
I do want to make a note about the listenability. There are no raw sex scenes, but there is swearing and adult situations making it unsuitable for little ears or co-workers.
Note: while I was given this book as a gifted audiobook copy, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Will they make it in time? Will Cait redeem herself? Will Cait and her dad ever reconcile? Will Cait & Mac become more than friends? No further spoilers...just know that there is a sweet HEA.
A new security agent, full of insecurities and the weight of being a legacy, is on a stakeout at an airport and then follows her prey to an illicit meet, where everything of course goes wrong. Wouldn’t be much of story if it didn’t, right? There’s decent surveillance tradecraft in the opening chapter. . . until the end, of course. Unfortunately that’s pretty much the end of that stuff as the plot settles into a mostly usual “girl back in town dealing with family and ex” story. Then it’s about survival. From the beginning the stubbornness is off the charts. Though there might be such people here and there in the world, most really don’t behave this way in real life, become they end up doing something that teaches them better. . . or gets them killed! Stuff like this makes me like the characters a lot less. For instance, at one point toward the end, when she’s about to do the job she’s been trained for, he again tells her she shouldn’t be doing this. I actually screamed—inside my head—“Dude, shut up! She’s doing this, so either help her or get out of the way!” I was actually wondering if there was anyone in this book who wasn’t stupidly stubborn. But the absolutely worst moment—trying not to spoiler—happens when she’s rescued but neglects to tell anyone about (something really bad) that’s going to happen. Argh! Why didn’t she? Because then she couldn’t be the hero at the end! This sacrificed any chance I could have had of finding her competent. Also, the cool and calm bad guy, as he was established early on—and what a coincidence that she ends up in exactly the same place he does—is shown being anything but at just the right time for her to notice. Very contrived scene. Although I enjoyed the writing, I couldn’t help but feel there was too much introspection, in what is a short book anyway. There’s always some, of course, but there was so much thinking here, often hashing out the same ground, that it probably took up half the book. And everyone’s stubbornness didn’t make me feel like rooting for them. 2.5 pushed up to 3/5
Mystery, suspense and romance, you cannot go wrong with Proving Ground. This book has a little of each. Caitlin Malone is trying to prove herself as a competent agent of Northstar Security. When things go wrong, she is sent home to find her father in the hospital and still voicing is disapproval of her choice of career. When she goes off for a couple of days with Jack to clear her head, she finds herself wrapped up in a case that includes theft, attempted murder and terrorism. Will Mac, her childhood friend and love of her life be able to find her in time to save her life? So much goes on in this story, it is important to pay attention to all the nuances. From the plans to infiltrate the biochemical plant to trying mending fences with loved ones, the suspense and emotions fly high. The characters of Mac and Caitlin are both strong willed and loyal. Their slow burning chemistry just heightens the story and keeps you listening to find out how things will finally end up.
This is my first narration by Charles Henderson Norman, and it was very satisfying. He has a good pace with the story, and his character voices are easily distinguishable. I especially loved his Irish brogue when giving life to Caitlin's father. I enjoyed his performance.
Ms. Fletcher keeps you turning the pages as she takes you on an emotional ride. Mac and Caitlin grab your attention from the beginning. Whether it's their growing attraction or the fear of surviving a forest fire, or the deadly threat that they've uncovered.
If you enjoy a riveting story filled with home grown espionage and romance mixed in, this is the book for you. Proving Ground is an intriguing story about Caitlin Malone who believes she screwed up her first Northstar Security Assignment. She’s suspended and sent home, only to discover her estranged father is in the hospital. Her first night home, she pulls a gun on the man, Mac, she’s spent two years trying to forget. If that isn’t bad enough, she stumbles into a plot to steal deadly pathogens from the bio-lab near her hometown and subsequently becomes trapped by a wildfire. Her only hope for rescue is Mac. Strong characterization from Cati’s difficult relationship with her father, to Mac’s troubled relationship with his biker uncle makes this an exciting read. I enjoy fast-paced romances with suspense and intrigue. Proving ground met all my requirements and then some. I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
PROVING GROUND is an interestingly unique suspense read. True, there are the inevitable surveillance and chase of the bad guys, the running out of time for the good guys, but this is the first time that I've read about running from an environmental threat like a forest fire.
Caitlin's inexperience caused her to botch her first assignment, and her boss ordered her to go home to her father, with whom she had a falling-out. Since she wished to keep her job, she had no choice but to follow orders, only to find that her father was hospitalized earlier that day. Her relationship with her father wasn't good, and there was some misunderstanding with Mac (her childhood friend and the man she loved) that wasn't yet resolved, and so she decided to join the biker rally that Jack (the hero's uncle) had invited her to in order to clear her head.
At the rally, Caitlin was enjoying her walk when she spied some suspicious activity that resulted in her being injured and the forest erupting into flames. With time running out, could she escape with her life? When Mac went to rescue her, would she instead be responsible for causing him to lose his life, too?
Caitlin is a strong heroine, and she's not perfect, and that makes her relatable and sympathetic, because who among us hasn't failed at our jobs and worked our asses off to prove ourselves worthy again? She's tough and brave, though she's not really good at her job, but maybe because she's young and inexperienced, but even toward the end, she needed Mac's and her dad's inputs. Then again, the difference this time was that she was willing to listen and take direction, and we see her growth and development over the course of the book.
Mac, on the other hand, is a bit of a mystery to me. He has a strong code of ethics and maybe a stubborn mindset that prevents him from going after what he wants. I would've thought he'd break down when he almost lost Caitlin to the fire...but wow, is he stubborn! I guess it's really hard to let go of hard-wired beliefs, and the author portrayed this well in Mac.
A good part of the book shows Caitlin and Mac trapped in the mountains with the fire burning ever closer; it was well described and you can really feel the desperation as they try to stay one step ahead. The surrounds and the movement of the fire was described in a vivid and clear manner; either the author researched this thoroughly or she has plenty experience in the country, in exploring forests and trails.
One thing though, this couple surely has a problem with communication. Not only do they have a problem talking about their feelings for each other, but even the situation that Caitlin found herself in--how she was almost killed, etc--weren't revealed until later in the book. I thought that's not so realistic, being an agent and especially when she knew the villainy of the duo. I would've thought that's the first thing she would've told Mac when she saw him, so that they could head off the bad guys.
Something else that surely has me scratching my head. I don't understand the connection between Atlanta and Oregon. Unless trouble follows Caitlin? I can't say more without spoiling the story.
For readers interested to know, there was no sex scene here, only kissing. Yet, that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story.
While my actual rating for this is 3.5 stars, overall, PROVING GROUND is a delightfully refreshing read.

Wow, this was a very suspenseful story about Caitlin Malone, a Northstar Security agent who is trying to make a name for herself but has messed up her last assignment.
Frustrated, her boss, an old-time friend of her dad's, sends her back home to stay with her father. And, as if things couldn't get any worse, she runs right into Mac (USDA Forest Ranger John ‘Mac’ MacAlistair), someone she'd rather forget.
Enter mystery, intrigue, suspense, a little flair of romance, and you're ready, set, go on this adventure! Lots of action, it's a roller coaster ride you won't want to get off of :) Fun & entertaining, definitely recommended - narrator did an outstanding job :) I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Following a parent's footsteps is usually something a parent is proud of, but when Caitlin follows her father's footsteps, it is the opposite. Caitlin wants to go into law enforcement just like her father. She even goes to work for Northstar Security which is the company her father help founded. The apple does not fall far the tree because she is just as stubborn as Daddy Dearest.
This story is less about the terrorist activity and more about a strained daddy and daughter relationship. It isn't that Caitlin has daddy issues. It is more that the two of them are so similar, they rub each other raw. Plus, Caitlin is rather young and inexperienced. Her feelings are valid just painful to witness. Her youth and headstrong desire to prove she is good enough is her downfall. This constant struggle with a huge chip on her shoulder makes it difficult to like Caitlin. She comes across as the younger kid who is always chasing the "big" kids so that she can join in on their reindeer games.
This is a surprisingly first book in the series. There seems to be more backstory in here that needs to be told. Perhaps more of this world will be exposed in following books in the series. Mostly, this book is a therapist's cash cow. The main characters and even the secondary ones all have relationship problems which a therapist can give a group discount rate. Most of it is due to lack in communication. This is unfortunately a realistic portrayal of how many families function - dysfunctional.
The romance part of this book is mediocre. Caitlin's crush for John MacAlistair is just odd. Odd in that Mac thinks of her as his little sister and can't get over it. The conflict does feel contrived because it is obvious the two of them have feelings for each other. As expected, when death threatens one of the, they finally get over their "mental" barrier and acknowledge the possibility of a relationship.
What is interesting about this book is the terrorist plot and how it is carried out. This is something which appeals to me. If this book contained more action scenes and less mea culpa, it would have been a smoother read. Ms. Fletcher's suspense in this story is light and predictable. If there is more focus on the sleuthing and criminal activity, it would have been a strong storyline for me. This is recommended for romance lovers who enjoy a friends to lover theme.

Title: Proving Ground - North Star Security Book 1 Author: Stanalei Fletcher Publisher: The Wild Rose Press Date of Publishing: April 17,2015
This book was reviewed for NetGalley and The Wild Rose Press in exchange for my honest review
Caitlin Malone, following her first real assignment is sent home by her boss O'Neal. for a leave of absence. The assignment was an epic fail. Due most in part to Caitlin's impulsive nature and failure to look for advice from others when uncertain. With her partner, Sloan shot, guilt rides Caitlin hard. Told to go home to her father and not to her apartment. She must confront the mess of her life she left behind, her father as well as one time best friend and former lover, John "Mac" MacAlistair.
Things do not start off well when she nearly shoots Mac in the dark of her father's home thinking him an intruder and go downhill from there. Mac informs her that her father's health from an old injury is worse and he is now in the hospital. He then forces her to go visit her father and try to bridge the gap her fight with her father and defiant departure caused. Her father promptly throws her out of his hospital room and tells her to go back to her job.
Licking her wounds Caitlin joins Mac's estranged Uncle Jack on a motorcycle rally in the mountains. Almost from the moment they arrive she manages to put herself in danger. Coming across one of the bikers and his brother-in-law planning on starting a forest fire she is attacked and thought dead, left at the scene. Awakening to a raging, hungry fire, inured she must keep ahead of the fire.
Mac needs to believe Caitlin is still alive even though he continues to deny her. Finding her in the burning woods he plot the escape. Timing will be everything. The route is dangerous and Caitlin with her various injuries may not be able to make it. Passions flair as the fire chases them. Which burns harder is hard to tell. Just when you think all is safe a new twist send your heart pounding. A great start to a fantastic series that is soon to become one of your favorites.
I gave "Proving Ground - North Star Security Book 1" a 4.75 stars out of a total of 5 stars.

This book grabs your interest from page one to the very end.
Caitlin Monroe is following in her father's footsteps by becoming an agent for Northstar Security Agency but her first assignment quickly goes south and her partner is seriously wounded when she disobeys his orders to stay put and not confront the person she was following. She is told to go home to Oregon and think about what happened for two weeks.
But she is very reluctant to do so as she and her father haven't been on the best of terms lately because he didn't want her to become and agent with the former company that led to him being wounded and a bullet left in his spine. Also, her former childhood friend John "Mac" MacAlister is the USDA Forest Ranger who has been assigned with essentially babysitting a motorcycle rally in his forest. His Uncle Jack is the leader of the MC group and he's recently been released from prison.
Add in that there is a Bio-Lab in the town, a distraught husband, Dunn, who is a security guard there and whose wife is gravely ill with cancer and he can't afford the treatment she needs. The terrorist whom Caitlin was following on her first assignment shows up in town and she knows there is something that is wrong. Her father is ill at the same hospital waiting for surgery to remove the bullet in his spine.
Because Caitlin stumbles onto the Dunn and the terrorist planning a forest fire so that it will cover up the break in at the Bio Lab, she is injured and is forced to head on a difficult hike with injuries trying to escape the fire. John is sent to rescue her and get them both to safety. The energy and suspense grabs a hold of you and keeps you wrapped up in the story from beginning to the end. You won't be disappointed in this book.

Re-uniting with old flames is never easy - especially when said flames broke apart in the most awful ways.
Caitlin Malone returns to her hometown after taking a forced extended leave from her job in Northstar Security for messing things up. She's already upset as it is - finding her dad's been keeping secrets from her, and that her first love is the one helping her old man and being very present in her home is not what she needs right now. John MacAlistair is not ready to face the one woman who truly mattered for him - not after the way he destroyed their relationship. But Caitlin's dad needs him to protect her - and despite trying to keep his distance, he's not about to let her get in danger on his watch. When both of them are trapped on a burning mountain, tension is running high, and they may have no time to clear things up between them...
Honestly, this was an interesting read. I liked the characters - well, sort of - and the pace was quick. Full of suspense and action, it was filled with tension and had the adrenaline levels go through the roof. However, I got here hoping some hot romance as well, and that's what I didn't get. Understandably, the two leads were running for their lives, but even still, after everything was said and done, me thinks a small boon of steamy loving wouldn't have hurt - but that's just me. And I didn't care much for Mac's attitude towards being with Caitlin - this hot and cold style really grates on my nerves, and didn't suit a grown-up man who's supposed to have his shit together!

Caitland Malone has come home. She is suspended from work and even worse she feels responsible for her partner's injury. He was shot because she didn't follow guidelines. Now she's back in Rockton, Oregon and hoping to see her estranged father. They had a falling out when she took her job with Northstar Security. When she sees John MacAlistair again, Caitland is overcome with her feelings for him. They had been friends forever until desire got in the way. Mac keeps his emotions deeply buried. He doesn't want her to know how he feels. Why is her life out of control? Can she find resolution? This is a riveting story filled with passion and espionage. I like Caitlin. She's intelligent and strong minded. She may be hurting inside but it won't stop her from following her instincts. I enjoy a feisty heroine. Mac is just as determined. He won't back down. Their battle of wills has sparks flying. I enjoyed their love-hate relationship. It is powerful and compelling. The story is fast paced and impossible to put down. The rugged and isolated setting is perfect for this suspenseful story. The characters are well written and likeable. Proving Ground is action packed from start to finish. I look forward to more books by Stanalei Fletcher.
I enjoyed this suspenseful ride from start to finish! Wow, what a ride! I finished this book in one day. I can't put it down. The first page started with some action, with Caitlin going on a mission for private security agency, Northstar Security. Immediately, I was sucked into the book with the thrilling surveillance scene! She lost her quarry and caused her partner to be shot at. It's refreshing to see a heroine who failed her assignment. Her issues and headbutt arguments with her father are also familiar. The action picked up again when Caitlin was trapped by fire in the forest!
The threat of terrorism and biological outbreak was very real, and Caitlin and Mac race to save the day while fighting for their own survival. I was on tenterhooks the entire time! I kept rooting for Caitlin and Mac to get out of it alive. I want Caitlin to resolve her issues with her father and with Mac before it's too late! Stanalei's characters are human, flawed and relatable, making it easy to identify with them and their problems.
Totally enjoyed this book! I have no problem recommending this.
NorthStar Security is an interesting series. It is a clean romance which is wonderful for those looking for romance and mystery with out sex scenes. The story moves quickly but the characters spend most of the time in their heads. There is almost to much inner monologue. Towards the end of the book readers will find themselves reading what amounts to a teenage love story inside the characters heads. It just gets to be a little much and the author pulls away from the suspense and forces to much on the odd romance. The story revolves around Caitlin Malone. She is suppose to be tough as nails but she is all marshmallow which doesn't work with the imagine the author is trying to paint for readers. USDA Forest Ranger, John ‘Mac’ MacAlistair the love interest is the typical too good looking, too handsome and tons of baggage.
Proving Ground could use a little more cleaning up by an editor to make it a great start to a sereis. Thank you to Netgalley and The Wild Rose Press, Inc publihsing for the copy of Proving Ground The Northstar Security Series, 1
Non-stop Excitement - A Must Read for Action-Lovers!
The excitement is non-stop from start to finish. From the very start, the heroine Caitlyn is on a mission which she screwed up. Then, she stumbled upon a terrorist plot, which she sees as a way of redeeming herself.
The psychology of how Smith, the terrorist, recruited Dunn to help him is brilliantly portrayed. The suspense in the entire story is brilliant and fantastic.
I was practically on the edge of my seat the entire time. I continue turning the pages frantically, wondering what's going to happen to Caitlin and Mac, and whether the villain will succeed and start a biological outbreak.
A must-read for action-lovers!

Absolutely fabulous! This story was full of suspense, action, terrorists, a motorcycle gang, a forest ranger, family issues and sexual tension as high as a mountain. Not only that the heroine of this book was awesome! Caitlyn is smart, tough, determined, stubborn, yet vulnerable and a bit psychic. Mac, the love of her life is a sexy forest ranger, childhood friend & protector, strong-willed, smart, confused & conflicted.I thought both were just great characters. The supporting characters were also interesting & unique. I couldn't stop reading until the last page, I was that engaged. This was a thoroughly enjoyable book, and I will be looking to read more from this author. A review copy was provided to me via Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.
Lots of action, the story was full on from start to finish. The characters were well developed and complex with lots of unresolved issues between them which added extra intrigue and tension to the storyline. The plot was good, I liked the unexpected added twist created with the forest fire which meant that the heroes had to save themselves rather than being hunted down as is generally the case in your average spy romance. This made the story a lot more interesting and credible. Overall a good story. This is a must read for anybody who enjoys a good romance tale combined with some action.

I’ve long been a fan of the romantic suspense genre and Stanalei Fletcher does not let me down with Proving Ground. The opening scene sets the stage for a fast-paced novel filled with a variety of pitfalls that keeps the H/H on the run and the reader on the edge of their seats. The author does a credible job of bringing the characters to life on the page and provides a sensational backdrop for the suspense. I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a strong heroine and a hero to swoon over.

This book was so engaging, I couldn't put it down. Circumstances surrounding the hero and heroine were so dire, my heart raced with each step they took as impending danger closed in...and my heart ached with each vicious battle as the hero and heroine denied the love they had for each other. RUN, don't walk, to purchase your copy of PROVING GROUND...N.O.W! Luh-uh-uh-uv'd it!
