Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Well, another strange Professor Challenger story - #4 apparently, although I am not too sure the order is strictly correct. Nevertheless, this is a short story, originally published in Liberty Magazine, 25 February-3 March 1928.

It is presented as a story told by Peerless Jones, an artesian boring expert and friend of Ed Malone. In it he describes a letter he receives from Challenger, a meeting with the man himself, and Challengers deep bore experiment on Mother Earth - and the subsequent repercussions!

Yes, it is better than The Land of Mist which was frankly awful, but it doesn't have much to offer really. Only for die hard fans, or people like me who are unable to resist reading the series.

This is a soft SF novella, the fourth installment in Professor Challenger series by Arthur Conan Doyle. While it mentions the previous adventures, it can be perfectly read as a stand alone.

The story starts with a letter from George Edward Challenger that asks to secretly provide the services of an expert in Artesian borings. The receiver of the letter, the expert in question, Mr. Peerless Jones is persuaded to join the Hengist Down Mystery – the deepest even hole dug my man. The professor tries to prove the hypothesis of the living Earth. Will he succeed?

Another quick light read but not worth a re-read

This is the fourth story featuring Doyle's lunatic genius scientist Professor Challenger. This is only a short story rather than a novel but like the previous Challenger stories it is based upon one brilliant idea. Here it's Challenger's World Echinus Theory. He decides that like an echinus the world is one giant living creature with a hard outer shell. He plans to drill through this hard shell and touch the creature inside.

The majority of the story, like others in the story, is about the build-up to the event. It's narrated by a new character, Peerless Jones, who is an expert on drilling. This allows for yet another introduction to Challenger and whilst this is fun I'm not sure it was really necessary given how well it was done before. Indeed Jones is a completely unnecessary character, especially given that he is friends with Malone (as everyone is apparently) and Malone is with him the whole time.

It's only at the dying stages of the story do we actually get what we came here for. The creature is touched and it screams. It's frankly a little underwhelming as we don't get much more than that sentence. The climax of the story is almost entirely covered in it's title.

This falls foul of one of the typical problems with science-fiction. It has a great, unique concept which I loved and really fitted into Challenger's bonkers world. But it doesn't have a proper story to share that concept within and even with a few moments of the brilliant character that is Professor Challenger it's simply a great idea shoved into an underwhelming story.

This lovely, speculative and tongue-in-cheek tale was Doyle's triumphant return to the actual world of Professor Challenger. It was tight, at times suspenseful, and eventually hugely enjoyable.
Highly recommended.

Ben giocata dottor Challenger.

Searching in my library for a proper Doyle's biography, i came upon this odd little story.

It's supposedly the fourth installment in the "Professor Challenger" series, however there is no need to read them in order to get the point. I'm not sure why it has so many negative reviews. It is not a special specimen of writing ability, but there is nothing amiss with it either.

A quick read, the subject is in the mood of the times: science and extravaganza. Reminded me of Jules Verne and certain Poe's writings.

Challenger does it again in style; even if he was a little less mean in this book.

Was an enjoyable read. How about a pulsing and a living core in place of a pit full of boiling magma? I think the thought is more appealing.

Published two years after The Land of Mist , "When the Earth Screamed" actually has more in common with the earlier Challenger novel, The Poison Belt , since both deal with the concept of the "ether" and the earth's reaction to it. In this latest story, Challenger has become even more pugnacious and intolerable, reaching full "cartoon" status. The plot is simple and goofy: the earth is a living organism that doesn't realize humans exist -- much like a person doesn't realize a mosquito exists on its skin until the mosquito bores into the skin (this is Challenger's comparison). Furthermore, the earth gains its sustenance not from anything on its surface, but from the "ether." Challenger's idea: to dig beneath the crust of the earth to "poke" the earth, and let it know that humans exist.

What is the purpose of this? And what is the connection to the ether? Well, our narrator (an engineer) asks these questions, and Challenger's response is, "There is no reason except...knowledge!" It's hard to figure out if Doyle is mocking science or is just being lazy in his writing. Perhaps a little of both. He further attacks journalists as unethical scavengers, probably due to his own experiences around this time of dealing with journalists critiquing his personal viewpoints. The story doesn't really contribute much to the Challenger mythos, and nothing is very memorable. The ending is telegraphed by the title, so it is neither surprising nor interesting. One final side note: Challenger mentions his wife being alive at the beginning of the story, which suggests either that Doyle forgot he killed her off in The Land of the Mist or is purposely setting this story before the events of that novel. I choose to believe the latter, which would place this story closer in chronology to the The Poison Belt.

A nice little professor Challenger short story, which I think I have read before, but I can't recall when and where. The plot is totally crazy, even for prof. Challenger's universe, and Challenger is obnoxious as he should be. The narrator is Mr. Peerless Jones, an expert in artesian boring and a friend of Edward Malone (whom we know from the previous Challenger stories). It's rather peculiar that Challenger should need the expertise of Peerless Jones when he's managed to do the hard part and drill eight miles down the Earth's crust already. Oh well.

Anyway, it's an entertaining albeit crazy story and could, in a way, be seen as a forerunner of the Gaia hypothesis. And it's certainly a lot better than The Land of Mist (which I was unable to finish - perhaps I should give it another try someday).

2025: I read this for the third time I think, now as a part of my edition of The Poison Belt. I still liked it a lot, but I missed Summerlee and Roxton from The Poison Belt and The Lost World. And I also believe that Malone should have been the narrator and not just a character. Nevertheless, it's a good story – better than The Disintegration Machine but not as brilliant as the first two novels.

Fascinating little short story.

First person narration (not by Malone).

We meet up once again with Malone and Challenger during a very secretive environmental experiment.

Don't read this book expecting another Lost World. I think that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle appreciated that an adventure like that only happens one in a life time and to repeat such an epic over again would be unbelievable. I like the fact that the Challenger series follows a realistic (if you can apply that term to a sci-fi series) tone in the fact that their adventures are unrelated one offs, rather than repetitive events.
