I love treasure hunts, so when I saw the title, Treasure Hunt, I purchased this book by J.H. Brogan.
This is a fun, fast-paced book, never boring, and has plenty of excitement and action. I enjoyed the character Falcon and his sidekick, Jamie Porter, who insists on helping him find a treasure her father had hidden after hijacking a plane 2o years prior.
Her father hires Falcon to retrieve the treasure because all eyes would be on him once they let out of prison. Simple enough until Falcon must learn to dive in order to get hold of the treasure and then to find he and Jamie are not the only ones looking for it. The adventure turns into a dangerous game that sets them on the run for their lives. A great adventure book. Many thrills and spills. I recommend this book to adventure seekers and treasure hunters.

Have you ever heard of D.B. Cooper? Because if you have, the plot of this book might seem startlingly familiar.

If you haven’t heard of D.B. Cooper, you might want to look at the Wikipedia entry, but I’ll sum up by saying he was the perpetrator of the only unsolved skyjacking in US history, parachuting out of an airliner somewhere over the Pacific Northwest with $200,000 strapped to his body on Thanksgiving Eve, 1971. Neither he nor his stolen money have been identified to this day despite the FBI’s best efforts.

So when a man named Bill Porter perpetrates a near-identical heist for $8 million in 1978 at the beginning of this book, I was immediately put in mind of Cooper, and mystified that the author at no point in this book mentions the Cooper case or credits it for inspiring him.

Even if this was a really great book, this failure to acknowledge taking real-life inspiration from one of the greatest unsolved crimes in history would annoy me intensely. As it is, the plot is a thorough muddle and the book can’t seem to decide whether it wants to be a thriller or a romantic suspense, falling messily in the middle with not enough thrills OR romance.

There are inconsistencies all over the place, like the villain knowing what cave to intercept the protagonists at despite his never being told. Or two beds appearing in a hotel room where there was only one the night before. Or a supposedly well-travelled career criminal having no idea where he could find a gun in the capital city of a South American country even with plenty of money at hand.

Then there’s one of my least favorite tropes making an appearance; an otherwise competent and self-sufficient heroine who’s been thriving in said South American country for several years apparently having not the faintest idea how to fight back or defend herself when a villain tries to rape her, instead just helplessly screaming and going limp. Oh, also she has ‘large breasts’ despite appearing ‘small and frail’. Definitely written by a man. Sigh.

The author is Honduran, and despite my utmost respect for anyone who is able to write in a language not their first, I actually think it’s even more important to retain a competent editor who IS a native speaker of that language. It’s very obvious that hasn’t happened here, because the language is too stilted and there’s too much telling rather than showing.

If this was an original plot, I’d probably still have given it two stars for the issues mentioned above. Ripping off a fascinating real-life case and not crediting it? This author gets one star and a black mark from me, I’m afraid.

The Falcon, a professional thief, is in the fortunate position of picking and choosing which commissions to take, from recovering incriminating photos for a politician, to retrieving the proceeds of a 20-year-old heist on behalf of the skyjacker who turned himself in and is about to be released. Porter wants his money back - he reckons he's earned it after so long behind bars.
The retrieval is not as straightforward as the Falcon expects. He intercepts a kidnapping and ends up with a partner, a young archaeologist; she's strong-willed, doesn't take orders, and is something of an irresistible force. The opposition, led by Porter's ex-cell mate, are sly, greedy and ruthless and also want the money. Peopled with believable characters, plenty plenty action, well-thought out red herrings and a feel-good unexpected ending, 'Treasure Hunt' is perfect escapist reading. A couple of apparent 'disconnects' gave me pause, but proved not to be, and some of the airline procedures have changed since the book was written, none of which detracts from the overall enjoyable read.

A good plot with a good story, basically about two smart criminals and several stupid ones. Not a mystery, but great action and a little romance. Well written and with great characters, but with a few logical flaws as well.

Good good guys and bad bad guys give the reader people to cheer for and against. Mix in a reasonable action plot with a quick pace with very little “fluff”, and you have all the ingredients for an excellent novel. I received an advanced digital copy through #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Professional thief the Falcon only steals to order and is picky about his clients. When he's approached by an imprisoned hijacker to retrieve the proceeds of his crime Falcon takes the job but it turns out much more complicated than he imagined.

This is a cleverly plotted thriller that keeps you guessing right to the end. It doesn't perhaps read quite as smoothly as it might in places but for the most part the roller coaster ride of the story means you don't notice too much.

Overall an enjoyable and original novel.

Really liked this book. Was not sure where the title came from until much later in the book. It was well written and moved through several decades. I have no idea how the author came up with the idea for this book. I had a hard time putting this book down and was dying to know what would happen next. Would recommend this book.

4⭐️ for the plot.
