In anticipation of the upcoming blockbuster film MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, 65 of comics best artists took to the post apocalyptic landscape to interpret this gorgeous and desolate world of George Miller's design. Inspired by images from the film, each of these visionary artists brings their unique style to a double page spread of part of the world of Mad Max. From breathtaking action sequences to heartbreaking character portraits, Fury Road will be perfectly captured by a one of a kind mix of comics legends, side by side with some of the most exciting new talent in the industry!
Lee Bermejo is a professional illustrator and comic book artist. He has done work for Marvel and DC Comics, Men's Health, Max Mara, Top Cow productions, Wizard Entertainment, and a crappy film called Ultraviolet (hey, whaddayagonnado). Talking about himself in the third person makes him feel more important than he really is. Anyway, enough about the blogger, let's talk art!
As what Gilbert Hernandez notes regarding to his art that featuring in this book;
"The distopian future that's been define by the Mad Max films is ripe with visual dynamics and begs many questions about where our present world is going. If we're lucky, it'll remain as something cool or frightening in movies and comics and TV shows. If it comes true... ".
What a movie that is. And what a collective of fan arts.
A must have for a graphic & comic enthusiasts. A compulsory one for the Mad Max universe believer.
From the poster which I love the color style it has going, just so pretty, to the art direction in the film and this. Basically its different art styles and tone based on the movie. And some are okay but the style is different and are interesting and others are really really good. Like something you'd see on a comic or something. Pretty good collection type book.
1. The pictures go across the fold, and that sucks. There's all this space tucked in for book construction purposes, and it interrupts the art quite a bit. Huge bummer.
2. The pieces are, for the most part, less inspired by the movie, more depictions of things that happen in the movie. Which is pretty great, but, you know, we have the movie. I think I'd rather see things that look more like movie posters or things that didn't necessarily happen in the movie.
3. SIGNIFICANT lack of
Which is unforgivable.
It's a quick flipthrough, and I think the other art book is probably a bit more bang for your buck.
This would probably look better in slightly different format, as most pieces would work great as poster art. The all-star roster of artists surprises with their approach and interpretation of the Mad Max universe and few are the pieces that are forgettable...
Wonderful book of amazing art that could of only been made better by printing as a larger format. Having a crease down each piece really took away from the beauty of each piece. This is chock full of concept art from those who saw the beauty, decay, and brutality that is Mad Max.
Such an awesome book full of incredible art! I do wish they used a different book format instead of a standard portrait layout. The center binding really got in the way of the full art so that sucks.
If you are a fan of Mad Max, this book is a wonderful collection of artwork inspired by the new film "Fury Road". It's a great collection of art by a number of talented artists, and there are a variety of styles and techniques on display. Essentially, each piece of art is 11x13 inches and is printed across a full two-page spread of the book.
Now obviously, printing a piece of art across two pages presents an issue... that is, the middle of the piece gets lost in the middle binding. Fortunately, it's not a major problem for this book; many of the artists placed their subjects somewhere other than the center of the piece. In fact, the two-page spread actually highlights the symmetry of a few pieces.
The book includes a brief foreword by director George Miller and short profiles/quotes from the featured artists. The only question is whether or not it's worth the cost -- at $15-20, it seems a bit expensive for a book which only has around 60 pieces of art. But if you do decide to buy I think you will be pleased with the quality of the book and the art within.
It is hard to rate a book of artist drawings. Some pieces I like and others weren't my thing. I do believe that most of them got the vision that George Miller was going for. A great item for any fan of Mad Max: Fury Road.
A side note, I suggest you see the movie as soon as possible on as big of a screen as possible. The imagery will blow you away.
So, this isn't a story - I had thought it was a graphic novel when i initially grabbed it. Instead it's a collection of artistic renditions from various artists inspired by Fury Road.
Some of this art is absolutely incredible! This comes from a guy who struggles with stick figures and found his 6th-grade flip book project the struggle of a lifetime. I wish there were more depictions of the War Rig beyond the front view and grill, and much of the art is repetition of the same scene. Then again, Fury Road was one big nonstop action sequence.
My main issue isn't with the art or artists, but more with the presentation. It really takes away from the art when the binding splits down the middle. It forces you to lay the book out and press it flat to see clearly, and then it just doesn't.. Feel.. Right.
Mildly disappointing art book based on one of my favorite movies.
The art in this is cool, but unfortunately it all started to feel the same. I enjoyed flipping through it, but I found that I never went back to it. And when I did it was always a bit disappointing.
One of the key problems is it's all more or less stuff from the movie, and I've seen the movie many times. It would have been more interesting to see artists explore the characters and worlds of the Mad Max universe a bit more.
I eventually sold my copy. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't worth the shelf space. Worth looking at if you're a Mad Max fan, but if possible find a copy in a library.
An interesting look at "Mad Max: Fury Road", told through the eyes of many different comic book artists and creators. Each page opens on a two page spread depicting a scene (or a loosely interpreted version of one) in bright, exciting color and action.
The book isn't just for fans of the movie, however. I thought the back pages, filled with statements from each of the artists, were the best part. Their interpretations of the movie, character and project itself were enlightening and humorous.
A really great collection of art inspired by the film. All the art is presented in big, bold images across 2 pages. Real treat for the eyes. What I really like about this collection is that it has write ups of all the artists and what inspired them at the back. Goes a long way in making it more personal.
i was tidying my shelves and realised i'd never read this when i got it. or perhaps read isn't the correct word. either way, 10/10 for the art, but 2/10 for whoever thought this binding would be suited for an art book? did they not get a test copy first?
Mad Max: Fury Road – Inspired Artists is a collection of works by various comic book artists inspired by the latest instalment in the Mad Max films. The work is varied, in style and content, and as such how much the reader will enjoy each art piece will depend on their personal taste. Personally, there were some that I loved and would love to have prints of (the pieces by George Pratt and Tara McPherson need to be on my wall now), a fair bit that I liked, some that were intriguing in their content (Celia Calle's depiction of two women on a motorbike wearing oversized skulls as helmets comes to mind), some I wasn't fussed on, while others I found confusing or simply didn't like.
Each artist provides a commentary on their piece, which was more often than not just a quick description of how they watched one of the three original Mad Max films and became interested in the world. I would have preferred the commentary to focus more on Fury Road and their own piece in the anthology, rather than their love of the original films, but then I'm more interested in Fury Road and the meaning behind each piece.
The book itself is rather nifty. However, as others have noted, the physical structure of the book works against the artwork, often burying the centre of each piece in the spine of the book. The ebook edition of this book does not have this problem – for those looking to purchase Inspired Artists, I would advise they buy the ebook, which may not be as scrumptiously presented as the hardback but will let you view each piece in whole. My preference would be for Inspired Artists to be presented as a large, coffee-table book with attention paid to ensure that the centre of each artwork does not get swallowed into the binding. Since it's unlikely this book will be reissued in a better format, though, I'll settle for the option to buy individual prints of the art.
The artistic interpretations are fantastic and depict some of my favorite artists, however, this book has a terrible flaw - who the hell decided this would be the best format to tragically slice these pictures in half!? This book would have been better suited to a larger size instead of the standard comic size. The most tragic is Tara McPherson's Furiosa; taking a gorgeous head shot and making it awkward. It's disappointing for an art book to be presented in such a way as to not show the art at it's best.
This was a wonderful book. I loved looking at all the great artwork. The book is all artwork except the last 5 pages have a list of the artists in order of appearance. My 21 yr old son pretty much stole the book from me. This book is more for the high school aged on up. I really don't recommend a child under 16 yrs old to look at it since the art is really dark/graphic and has violence like guns and fighting in it. This is a book that can be enjoyed over and over again.
Very underwhelming to be honest. I loved Mad Max Fury Road so I couldn't wait to get a hold of this book to see all the amazing art. Unfortunately it wasn't all that good. Because when I go out and pay a premium comic price to buy a book with just art pieces in it, I expect each piece to be amazing. However I found 80% of the book to be very mediocre. Which is a shame because I am a huge fan of the movie. The 20% of drawings that I liked however don't justify the price.
Are really good companion piece to the film, while in the back of the book each artist mentions which movie in the series was their first all art in this is of Fury Road.
That is not a bad thing as all artist but one turn in breath taking pieces and if I had to knock it it would say only getting 64( 65 but one artist screwed the pooch ) was to low and IMO more should have been hired
This is a gorgeous book. I love all the different styles and it's interesting what different parts of the movie (characters, moments, scenes) caught the artists' attention and inspired their work. It makes me want to see the movie all over again. It also makes me want to find comic books illustrated by some of the artists, so that's always fun.
WITNESS ME as I tell you how fantastic this is and how much you need to own it if you loved MMFR. It's gorgeous, simply bloody lovely, all the artists involved clearly put a lot of love and hard work into each piece.
My only criticism would be I can't have all of them as framed prints on my walls.
No real text beyond the introduction and artist bios. But man, this is some gorgeous art. My beef with it is an oft-repeated one: The double-page spreads don't do justice to the artwork. It would work much better as a larger book that could fit one piece of art on one page, instead of spread over two pages with the binding in the middle.
While I loved nearly all of the art in this book, I did find it a shame that much of the artwork was printed across two pages, cutting the images in two - many in ways that if felt like it took something away from the pieces.
This book is a lovely collaboration of professional artists who happen to be fans of Mad Max: Fury Road.
I was surprised that all of these pieces by all of these different artists came together so well. The styles varied, but whoever put this together had a great eye.
