Drew Avera is a Navy veteran, musician, and the bestselling author of the Dead Planet series and the Alorian Wars.

He was born and raised in rural Mississippi and grew up with a deep affection for comic books and science fiction movies and television shows. At one point he boasted a comic book collection with more than 1,000 issues. His love for comics inspired him to pursue a career as a comic book artist, but an injury to his hand ended that dream permanently.

Still, he was inspired to create in one medium or the other. He picked up a guitar at fifteen years old and began writing songs almost immediately. That “obsession” as his parents called it put him on the path to rock stardom…in his bedroom.

It was when he turned sixteen and bought the novel “What Savage Beast” by Peter David (The Incredible Hulk) that he caught the bug to be a writer. Unfortunately, it would not come to fruition until fourteen years later.

Drew enlisted in the US Navy as an Aviation Electricians Mate at seventeen years old. He served twenty years and deployed on four combat deployments to the Persian Gulf. During those deployments he would spend his free time reading books. He loved reading books in a series and that inspired his journey to becoming a fiction author.

In November 2012, at the age of thirty, Drew began his journey as an author by participating in national Novel Writing Month (NANoWriMo). He published his first book in March of 2013 and the rest, as they say, is history. With more than twenty books published in the space opera, military science fiction, cyberpunk, and dystopian genres, he has built a backlog with something for everyone who enjoys science fiction adventures.

After retiring from the Navy, he began an exciting new career in the simulation field. Drew is now focusing his efforts on building upon what he learned in his first eight years of publishing. He has plans for an all-new space opera and military science fiction series as well as new collaborations with other writers.

The best is yet to come!

Not a lot has changed from book one the plot was still good and so was the narration, this book does leave a lot of questions unanswered. It is still very unrealistic and not giving enough information. At times I had to go back and re-listen because my mind had wondered away. This had nothing to do with the narrator but with the story. For me what was not believable is you have a policeman who everyone is looking for along with his sister who doesn’t change his clothes after running into a member of the mob on his way on the ship. When he and his sister finally comes to their sense and get a change of clothes deciding they needed to stay in the room as much as possible only to go window shopping which leads to them being kidnap. He is still running around the ship with his weapon on his arm in full view of everyone and no one even ask a question. I got very confused with the person who helped them after a battle with part of the mob I thought was the captain to the caption I saw at running with the mob. If that is the case he changes his personality so fast only to go back to the old helpful them once they land and want to go back home. I am still confused who the man was on the ground at the end of this book. There is again a lot of action that makes the story interesting but with no body as to facts or the how and why it is very lacking.

Mr. Kessel narration was better in this audio than the last but he still seem as lost as I was from time to time. There were times I thought his voice should have been louder as the character grew angry and at times lower when whispering. At times I still felt he was pushing their emotions not giving it a smooth even tone and other times right on the money. I still feel it is because the story didn’t feel realistic to him anymore than it did me. The mob member’s voices were strong, deep and full of power. His performance for the most part was good he did make this a more pleasurable listen. A little more work is needed to make this come across at more even flow. At times if felt like the narrator was as lost as I was. If this is the case it would have a big effect on his narration. I did not hear any background noise. If any breaks were taken I could not tell. The music used at the beginning and end fits the story it wasn’t over powering and it goes very well with this story. With not having enough information given and at times too much I thought this narrator did a great job. I still believe with the right book this narrator would be outstanding. I just really felt he felt as lost as I was at times trying to understand all the pit falls of a story that leave so much out. I am looking forward to listening to more of his work.

I felt even more lost in this one than the last story of this series. They would practice shooting on the ship but when they missed it did no damage to the ship? No one heard them? They walked around the ship with their weapons out in the open when no one else had them but nothing was said or no one pointed them out. I thought only the people with the most money were on the ship but the author at one points talks about the poor being there.

I loved the action and danger but there was no foundation to pull me in. They want to go back to Mars they go to the caption saying lets go home he said ok. He works for the mob and doesn’t ask any questions. The author totally lost me in this book with missing something and having to go back and listen only to think that makes no sense. It was an interesting read and I would like to finish the series only to know what happen to those on Mars, long with a few people and if Earth has been taken over. Again this is my point maybe I am missing some key points to make this a great book, please give it a listen and find out what you link.

The truth shall set them free.

Drew Avera begins Book Two of the Dead Planet Series exactly where Exodus left off. Serus and Kara Blackwell are still on the ship heading for Earth. Laurel and Serus are an item again, and more and more of Serus’ indoctrination is fading. Once they make landfall, the action only intensifies. They meet Harris who takes them under his wing. Harris is fighting his own battle against his uncle who has a lot in common with the Syndicate.

Join Kara, Serus and Laurel as they assist Harris and learn to live on Earth. Discover what Kara has figured out and what they decide to do about it. Again Mr. Avera keeps us on the edge of our seats and wanting more. I will admit the Epilogue came as a shocker and has me rushing to read Book Three.

Verity was a short second act in the Dead Planet series, and it switches the style of the story a bit: gone are the mix of mystery/sci-fi noir and action story. Instead, we get a character driven story about going back to the origin planet (Earth) of the human race. The writing is again very clean and straight forward and the pacing is good. I still like the approach taken by the author in regards to the political ploy use by the Syndicate, but the story is less about them an more about the character growth. As a follow-up novella, it did barely enough to keep my interest in the story, but I did read The Alorian Wars series from this author in the meantime and was really impressed with it, so I will finish up this series base on my enjoyment of this other series.

The characters begin being more defined, but some traits that are shown in their development seem to vanish into nothingness when the action really start.

There are mentions to Serus programming, but those are far and not that important since they don't carry real consequences.

It's still an entertaining story.

Verity (Dead Planet #2), my tenth read from author Drew Avera. Enjoyable Dystopian science fiction adventure read. I was given a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. The story was well-written & flowed smoothly & quickly, although short. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

4 stars.

Again things aren't as they first appear and disaster is waiting around the corner.
Good follow up, I'm diving straight into the next book to see whether all goes to plan (I doubt it).

I wanted to like this book, really I did. I have read and greatly enjoyed other of Mr.Avera's work. But this I cannot include as part. Written in the first person, the story continues to follow Serus, our assassin policeman hero (from Exodus) as, together with his sister and girlfriend, they travel to earth in an attempt to put an end to the Syndicate but then decide also to save Mars There is a lot of self deprication and gnashing of teeth over his history and so many tears wiped from the corners of eyes, a touch of jealousy and protestations of love. Yet the characterisations fail, all is flat and unformed. But worse is the apparent missing (and crucial) central section between chapters 14 and 15, crucial since it seems to change the direction of their objectives.
Two stars for the conceptual story and the last two chapters which promise so much more. But for the book as a whole it needs serious editing, and proof reading, also, to become worth the reading. It could have been good - such a pity.
