The Shadow You Cast
A unique flipover novel from the bestselling author of Dead Girls Don’t Talk and Whispers of the Forgotten.
A stalker. A victim. Different ways to read their story.
Amanda: Obsession always leaves a mark.
Amanda Jackson has learned how to stay invisible. Being unseen feels like survival, especially after a past she has carefully buried, shaped by anonymous cruelty and damage she never had to witness firsthand. She knows better than anyone how fine the line is between obsession and care.
And yet.
On her morning commute she notices Isabel: vulnerable and distracted, and softly talking to no one. Amanda's attention locks onto her. When their paths cross again and again throughout the day, Amanda is certain: this is happening for a reason.
She becomes increasingly convinced that she is the only one who truly understands what Isabel needs and she will help her. Whatever it costs.
Isabel: The dead don’t stalk. The living do.
Since the death of her fraternal twin sister, silence has become unbearable for Isabel DeWitt. She fills it by speaking aloud to the sister she lost. Cassie won't let her go, but her presence is strongest in the rooms Isabel still doesn't dare to enter. Isabel calls it grief.
She knows there is more to it than that.
On the anniversary of Cassie's death, Isabel is determined to move forward. But the past does not bury itself quietly, and the lies she has told herself and others, grow heavier with every day that passes.
Isabel has always believed that her dead sister was haunting her for a reason. It never once occurs to her that the living might do the same.

I was really excited for Sandra´s new flipover novel but unfortunately it didn´t live up to my expactations.
As always with these books, we follow a story from two different POVs. In this case it´s Amanda, a girl who has some issues with obsession and stalking, and Isabel, who recently lost her twin sister Cassie. She can still see her and regularly talks to her.
I started with Amanda´s POV and honestly didn´t feel very invested. I can see it was meant to feel thriller-like and psychological but most of the time I was bored. I then switched to relive everything from Isabel´s POV and while this was definitely more interesting to me, I wasn´t really intruiged until the confrontations and epilogues. Those definitely saved the story for me. Also at some point I was just thinking I´d be more interested in reading a book about Cassie than this story?
Now, what annoyed me the most while reading this... This is the second book from Hamley that I read in a short time that had horrible editing. I´m not too big on noticing these kinds of things usually but it was all so obvious I got VERY annoyed. Some examples:
- The literal first sentences of Amanda´s POV are confusing (both me and my friend had to reread them multiple times). She talks about not liking fall but then saying she hates winter weather (fall is NOT the same as winter) and then saying she hates nothing more than summer.
- Saying you're not checking online to see if you´re still a hot topic and then immediately saying you have a google alert for your name???
- Posting PICTURES about someone, then adding some text and saying ´giving enough info to hint at the person without saying who it is´?! You used PICTURES
- A charachter saying they took a screenshot, to then say three pages later they wished they´d taken the screenshot

My first flip-over book where you get to read the same story from two different perspectives! I thought this was such an interesting concept and had so much fun with it.
I went into The Shadow You Cast almost completely blind. I knew you could read the story from two different sides, but other than that, I honestly had no idea what to expect.
The story follows Isabel and Amanda, two girls at the same art academy, each showing you their own version of the story.
I started with Isabel. After losing both her twin sister and her mother, she carries an enormous amount of grief, but she has never really allowed herself the space to process it. At the same time, she constantly feels the pressure to live up to the expectations that come with her family.
Her story affected me more than I expected. Especially that feeling of having to be more, do better, and slowly losing sight of who you actually are in the process. You quickly realise that Isabel is absolutely not in a good place mentally, and I just kept hoping things would somehow turn out okay for her.
And then I flipped the book over and met Amanda.
Amanda wants to help Isabel too. Just… in a very different way.
She is convinced that she truly understands Isabel and knows exactly what she needs. Meanwhile, her behaviour becomes increasingly obsessive, without Amanda really seeming to realise how far she is taking things. There were so many moments during her chapters when I was practically yelling at the book: Nooo, what are you doing?! Stop it! 😂
That contrast between the two perspectives was one of my favourite things about this book. You're reading about the same events, but through two completely different experiences. Things that seem perfectly logical or innocent from one perspective suddenly take on a whole new meaning from the other. And with both girls, I had moments where I genuinely felt for them, followed by moments of: Girl, you are so not okay!?
And eventually, those two sides of the story come together in one confrontation…
I genuinely couldn't predict where this story was going. Especially after the epilogue, I was left with this massive what the hell did I just read? feeling. I seriously needed to discuss it with other people afterwards just to figure out how I actually felt about that ending.
Thank you @hamleybooks for this ARC!

3.5 stars - Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC!
In this psychological flipover book we follow Amanda and Isabel. Amanda has a problem with obsession and it gets worse when she notices Isabel. Isabel isn’t really aware of her surroundings. I mean, who would be, if you have your hands full with a dead twin sister who haunts you?
You can choose whose story to read first. I started with Isabel and I did have a preference with starting with her story. I feel like some info is best known starting from her pov. With Amanda’s pov keeping me on my toes, I would have liked it if Isabel’s pov had the same compelling effect. Amanda really freaked me out 😅. Her being unhinged was well written, and seeing her justify her thoughts genuinely had me concerned.
I felt more tension with Amanda’s pov bcs every single line had me thinking “wth is she about to do?!” whereas with Isabel’s pov I expected a bit more. Both pov’s are fairly fast paced but the ending left me a bit confused (unless I’m right about my theory).
The chapters are evenly broken down as well as the book as a whole (both pov’s are about the same length). There was quite a bit of repetition, and since they’re supposed to be American teens, I do feel like I needed more convincing when it comes to writing style, word choice, and dialogues.
There are trigger warnings in the beginning and I appreciate certain topics being in this book. It is, however, a good original story and a perfect read for the fall months 🍁

I love myself a good flip-over book from time to time, and this was no different. The concept of there being 8 different ways you can read this book - therefore, 8 different reading experiences - is so cool to me.
Now on to my actual book review. I was very excited to receive this ARC since I've read 2 other flip-over books by Sandra and really liked those; however, I do have to say this storyline underwhelmed me a little bit. The 'plot twist' wasn't really a plot twist, and I predicted it not even 25% into the story.
There also wasn't a lot of character development, meaning that they felt a bit flat to me from time to time.
That being said, I did enjoy the book while reading it. Being in Amanda's POV felt very weird to me, but it was also kinda cool at the same time. It was so weird to see how obsessed she became with Isabel in the span of just one day, purely cause I couldn't imagine myself doing that.
I also really liked both epilogues and the ending of the book. It's an open ending, but once you've read both endings, you can picture pretty clearly how their lives continued, which I found very nice.
Overall, I am very thankful I got to receive and read this book as an ARC, and I would definitely recommend it if you are interested in art with a slightly twisted plotline.

With its unique flip-over concept, The Shadow You Cast is a story that immerses you in the character's mind and feelings. It's a story about trust and reality, truth and fiction, love and obsession.
We follow two abandoned teenage girls: the overshadowed twin, Isabel de Witt, and the invisible Amanda Jackson. As the reader, you start with either Isabel's pov of the story or Amanda's.
I started with Amanda's side, and the way her side was written was just so eerie and tragic at the same time. It was filled with rage, jealousy, sorrow, and disregard. In a way, you may be able to identify with her wanting to be invisible, not looking for drama. Her backstory is (unfortunately) quite a classic one. Your superhero dad turns out to have a secret agenda, one that involves another younger woman than your mom and a new family in another country. It forms the perfect catalyst for Amanda's motives: the fear of abandonment, trust issues, self-doubt, and ultimately, revenge. When she de-escalated from the social ladder, you realise how the world is filled with social pariahs. Whether this is true is uncertain. But one thing is for sure: Amanda believes in the fact that the world is against her. After several therapies, medications (*kuch drugs), and a visit to a special institution, she is finally cleared to ✨return to society✨. Still struggling with her mental health after such an intense journey, a striking girl catches her eye on the train. One that she cannot forget. One whom she immediately feels a strong connection to, because no matter how fuzzy her mind is, Amanda is incredibly observant and analytical. With all the best intentions in her heart, she swears to protect this magnetic girl.
*flips book*
Isabel de Witt just lost her twin and mother shortly after each other, leaving her alone with her narcissistic father who only cares about his prestigious name in the art world. She has always been the "reserve," the "lesser twin." She never really has a strong bond with Cassandre, with her being bipolar and her parents stimulating her state of mental health for their own purposes. You can imagine the pressure this puts on her and her cautiousness about fake relationships. While Amanda just started at Vanguard, Isabel's in her senior year. Though with everything happening, she hadn't noticed that she's being carefully watched.
The state of both girls' mental health was strikingly similar at its core, but manifested in different ways. It was confronting, and it felt realistic and raw. Put in the art world context, it felt a bit stigmatizing, as if you're only a great artist if you're deeply... mentally in the dark, so to speak. Being part of the art world myself, I'm sure that there are some shady hierarchies playing for god and money, but this just felt a bit much. Though, it does suit the story's mood. I also want to give credit to Zoé, Isabel's friend. She was such a wonderful character and so underappreciated by both girls. Of course, Amanda thinks that no one helps Isabel, nor really loves her. And Isabel is constantly like, "Ah, no, I'm fine. I don't need your help. Just going through some heavy stuff, but I'll be fine." In a way, I found that quite annoying the more I noticed how much Zoé genuinely tried to help her, and on the other hand, I can also understand that she acted that way. But yeah, I think that she was a real hero here, especially in the Confrontation.
The plot was masterfully crafted. With the two girls and the dead twin sister. The mystery, the drugs, the taboos, the grief, and the obsessive behavior. I also enjoyed that the two sides felt really different, but you still could identify overlapping plots. And then The Confrontation and The Epilogue were really thrilling when both worlds finally collide. I figured out a connection before it happened, but that was really cleverly integrated. The writing was well-paced, with sometimes a bit too detailed/repetitive writing, but short chapters to keep you hooked. Amazing suspense and social commentary on discourses such as social media, mental/physical abuse, grief, classicism, and mental health. It can be triggering, so be careful please. I know that I was, to be honest, so I tried to skim through those parts.
Overall, a 3.9/4.0 🌟

Niemand is onschuldig…

The concept of this book dragged me in, the story convinced me that Psychological Thrillers are something I should consider reading more often. The Shadow You Cast is a flip-over book. Both sides of the book contain one half of the same story.
On one side we find Isabel; DeWitt heiress and just a girl who is very traumatised by the deaths of her twin sister and her mother. The pressure she feels is so high she hasn't allowed herself to grieve. Which resulted into her speaking to her dead sister. No, she is not ok. I started reading Isabel's story and I felt her pain. I recognised a lot of her pain. Feeling like you have to be more and better and.. someone you are not.. hurts. It drives you insane. I kept on hoping she would get a happy ending.
On the other side there is Amanda. A girl with issues. With stalker tendencies she does not recognise. She also wishes that happy ending for Isabel. She feels like she is the only one who truly understands what Isabel needs and she decides she is going to help her. While reading her story I have thought 'oooh sweet girl, don't!' at least 10-15 times. She is so well written that every choice she made, made me feel worse. I could not see a happy ending for her..
But then the collision came, and the epilogue. Their worlds collide and what happens then and after is nowhere near what I expected it to be. I still don't know how I feel about it. On the one hand it is a brilliant ending. On the other hand.. just read it and discuss it with me?

The Shadow You Cast by Sandra J. Paul is my first flip-over book. I had seen several flip-over books by Sandra J. Paul before, and I thought it was such a cool concept that I decided to request this one as an ARC. Lucky me, I got selected!
Without giving away too much about the actual story… It’s incredibly interesting to read the story from two different perspectives. What is actually the truth? You think you have everything figured out, but then you read the story from the other perspective and suddenly you start questioning certain things again.
💔 Grief
👀 Stalking
💊 Addiction
🤐 Secrets
🌐 Social media
The chapters are short, which makes it a really quick and easy read. Besides being told from two different perspectives, the book is also divided into sections: the POV, the confrontation, and the epilogue. I enjoyed Amanda’s POV the most. It gave me a bit of a YOU vibe. (Amanda got a little Joe Goldberg-ish towards Isabel.)
I really enjoyed this book. My only criticism was that the ending felt a little rushed, which made it somewhat confusing.
If you enjoy an exciting psychological thriller, I can definitely recommend The Shadow You Cast!
Thanks to Hamley Books for providing me with an Advance Review Copy (ARC) of this book. I truly appreciate the opportunity to read it early. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

This is definitely not my first flip-over book by Sandra J. Paul. I’ve read all of her other flip-over books, and every single one has been a book I simply couldn’t put down. So, naturally, I had pretty high expectations for The Shadow You Cast, and once again, Sandra did not disappoint.
The story follows Isabel and Amanda, two girls whose sides of the story slowly reveal just how differently the same events can be experienced. I loved discovering both perspectives and seeing how the pieces gradually started to fall into place. There were definitely moments where I thought I knew where the story was going, only for it to surprise me again.
What I especially love about Sandra’s flip-over thrillers is how they completely pull you into the story. You think you understand what’s happening, then you turn the book over and suddenly you’re questioning everything all over again.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers, different perspectives and stories that keep you guessing, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try.
Another amazing flip-over by Sandra J. Paul, and once again, one I couldn’t put down! 🖤

"The shadow you cast" is the newest flip-over book written by Sandra J. Paul and I was (and still am) so excited about this one! The whole concept of reading a book and getting to decide how to read it is just so unique and fun.
Now about the story of Amanda & Isabel: I was sucked in from the first page until the last. The book was written in a way that it becomes almost impossible to put down. It's twisty, had me on the edge of my seat, questioning the truth, and got me reading past my bedtime. I love how these two characters were so different & yet so alike from each other. I needed to know what was going on and how Amanda & Isabel could possibly be linked. These girls and their story taught me that one point of view never tells the whole truth, and damn, I will think about this for a while! I would love to tell you so much more, but I can't spoil the ending, so I will just say: be in for a ride!! If you're searching for a psychological thriller for this spooky season, I will gladly hand you "The shadow we cast". Please note that this book contains some heavy topics like stalking, grief, mental health and addiction, but in my opinion every topic is touched with a lot of care.

Oke mijn eerste flip over boek.

Dit boek gaf me echt YOU vibes 👀
(ja, die netflix show)

• Amanda's kant: Mijn favo deel! 🚨 STALKER-ALERT!
