Oakheart
Cash grew up in the Wildwood, so nothing here is new to him. The pack is poor, the people are beaten down, and the alpha? He’s the one who does the beating. When I don't know what I really like to read and nothing I start is working for me, I often turn to authors I already know and there quite often to some shifter story because, let's face it, there is rarely anything new there and getting a version of something I'm already familiar with, is like a repeated vacation at a location which is now like a second home since your first visit years ago. So, when I looked at the plot of Oakheart it seemed like I get that story with a bit of action, some drama and enough feeling because of course: mates, and I know from past experience the authors are able to create characters I like and can empathize with.
And yes, the setup was what I could appreciate even while a bit uber-dramatic with nearly every character struggling with some kind of trauma but there are viscous witches, a bad alpha with bullying goonies, a MC with too much self-doubt who tries his best to keep his underaged cousin safe, another MC back from Russia where he escaped the suppression of a brutal government and there is that found-family trope that I like. So the ingredients were all there but unfortunately it didn't add up. Sometimes it felt like like the authors somewhere found bits and pieces of a story they wrote before they became the writers I know, and patched those pieces together without care of an information flow or character development and forgot to check if logic is still sufficient over all the different pieces.
Some of the information I'm missing can be explained by its status as a spin-off and others because they hold it back for the sake of the next books but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Would have been better to add the info into the plot that while it's a spin-off, you need the original series for the full picture. I won't go into details where I struggled with the logic presented or the blank places in the pack life or what went on with the witches. What I would have liked is some more detailed character development and seeing the effect of their trauma but the events were only mentioned but getting it only told might trigger my sympathy but I need to see the effect, the struggle, whatever, to feel compassion and link with the character. The only character who might show it, was Cash but he's the character I liked less.

Paranormal shenanigans from Sam & Fawkes
This is an odd one to review because it overlaps a lot with the Witchwolf series but also covers a fair bit of an earlier time period.
So, it means there's some time jumps that just happen without any real notice of intent and not necessarily enough information about what was going on in the background.
Still, I loved both characters when they appeared in the other series and I very much appreciated seeing them meeting and falling in love.
This is an odd one to review because it overlaps a lot with the Witchwolf series but also covers a fair bit of an earlier time period.

I have mixed feelings on this, but i liked it overall and look forward to the next one.
This book is a spin-off of the "Witchwolf" series, with key events overlapping with book 2 of that series. I was excited for these perspectives, but I expected this book to pick up where that one left off, and it very much did not. It started several years before the events we already know about, and it was a tough read. The first 38-39% of the book was just all pain and different types of abuse. Around 29% i started checking on my progress, thinking "how much more of this?"
For narrative reasons, I understand wanting to show us this back story instead of telling us about it or using a million flashbacks, but it might have been an easier read if it started where Witchwolf 2 left off, as it would have interspersed the pain with some hope.
This was a successful start to a spin-off series. Retelling events from a different book through a different perspective can be tricky because the events can feel repetitive (or contradictory if the author and editor don't pay enough attention) or the book can lose tension if readers know what happens next. However, this book not only filled in gaps but also pulled on narrative threads the Witchwolf readers didn't even know about, removing the risk of repetition and keeping the tension.
I would have liked more of the last 30% of the book, but i assume we will get glimpses of it in the remaining books. I know these books need a different tone than the Witchwolf books because of the contexts for these characters, but I hope the following books aren't as tough to read.

This is disappointing! It doesn’t really feel like a book, honestly - tons of major stuff happens off page, there are huge gaps in time with no clear indicator and the big drama is just showing a different POV for the events from the witchwolf books. It felt like the authors just wanted to close the loop on the obvious couple from the other series before they could start a new trilogy, but not like they really cared about the story.
A major topic is the bad alpha turning his pack, including (or especially?) children, into sex workers. I had a really hard time throughout the book understanding what was stopping our adult protagonists from intervening. The world building wasn’t strong enough to say that they had no power or ability for change so I was just super icked.

Terrible. Just really terrible. This story doesn't have its own plot. It provides another POV of the plot of another book series, so if you haven't read that, you'll be confused. And since it tries to line up with the timeline of another book, there's weird time jumps and time lapse. And since the story is focused on the plot of another book, it doesn't update us on the characters introduced in this book. After Leo ran off with Evie, what happened to them??? Leo had a phone, so he would've updated Aleks. But Leo and Evie dropped off the face of the earth because the authors don't care about them. It's just so BIZARRE!!! I've never heard of a spin off series that just fill in some blanks of a completed series, instead of telling new stories.
The main characters are so weak, incompetent, wishy washy, and whiny. They sound like damsels in distress instead of powerful werewolves.
Cash couldn't do anything right. He sent Evie off without money or a phone of her own. When he appeared in front of Jax, he didn't coherently explain why he was there. Could've said" Grant, my pack alpha, is coming to challenge you and threaten your pack. And I need you to grant sanctuary to a little girl whom Grant wants to pimp out."
But instead of getting to the point succinctly, the author chose to wax poetics about the room Cash was lying in. Instead of explaining the stakes, Cash relied on someone else to provide the information. "Good, there was someone there to explain all the shit I didn't have the words for." Cash is such a useless waste of space. Can't fight. Can't talk. Can't get his cousin to safety. Why would you create such a weak character?
The same with Aleks. He went into a bathroom to speak to another wolf, and suddenly he can't speak English. His thoughts are scattered and he can't do what he came to do--which IS JUST TO TALK. It's very transparent that the author chose to make the characters extra dumb and incompetent at crucial moment to try to build suspense and to increase the word count by dragging a scene out. It's so annoying. Up until this point, Aleks hasn't done anything important. Here he has a chance to just talk. And he still can't do it. Because the author chose to make him dumber than rocks for some reason.
Dear authors, you are writing about werewolves, yes? Not ditzy bimbos with nothing in their skulls. So why do they sound and act like the weakest damsels in distress in a MF romance from the past?

Loved the entire premise of it! Evie being targeted also just tugs at my heartstrings, no wonder Cash gave it his all to protect her and his father! I just wished the storyline in this novel went into more detail about how the pack is rebuilding its dynamics after Aleks took over. My main gripe was that it had a lot of Moonmagic's plot for the 2nd half, and that it wasn't all that mind-boggling to read anymore since I already know what happened.
Like, focus it more on Aleks' leadership, or building his romantic relationship with Cash now that they're not on-edge all the time. Maybe more on how the pack is faring. But I understand that the rest of the storyline will be continued in the following novels.
Idk, maybe I just crave to see more of them since I thought this would be like the Witchwolf series where each book was a continuation of the first novel's storyline with the same main characters. I hope we come back to this couple some day since it feels like they could achieve a lot more and grow together. (I love a good action-packed "slice of life" , Lmao.)

I found this book gripping from beginning to end. It's a great start to a new series about the Wildwood pack, and it also showcases the Crescent wolf pack from the Witchwolf series. Unfortunately, the Wildwood pack's alpha Grant and his enforcers are pure evil, using their members just so they can gain power.
I love the MCs. Cash is a sweet werewolf who has returned to Wildwood after apprenticing to a carpenter. He is determined to make life better for his packmates by building new homes. It's all he can do to keep his little cousin Evie safe, as well as the rest of his family. He is falling for Aleks, the alpha's heir.
Aleks has moved back to the pack lands after living in Russia with his mom. He is strong and protective, caring greatly for his family and friends. He is instantly attracted to Cash. He ponders how to use Grant's greedy attack on the Crescent pack to his advantage, so that he can improve things at Wildwood by becoming alpha.
There are plenty of action, romantic and steamy scenes. There are lots of lovable characters, as well as evil ones you will love to dislike wholeheartedly. The world building is excellent. I can't wait to read Leo's story.

I don't know how to rate this one. I liked it until it started leaving giant gaps, and then I was annoyed. I don't mean time gaps, or, like, gaps from where it overlapped with the previous books, but the gaps in information. Like, why did it seem like Evie got talked about, but we didn't learn a single thing about what was going on from a certain point onward until after, and only a tiny snippet? It felt like she got dropped and was a no-longer-necessary accessory for most of the last third of the book. She was still there, and they still spoke on her, but she lost some of the importance she'd had before *that* scene. I hate when shit like that happens. After that part of the book, it seemed like gaps like that became commonplace, and it got to where I was frustrated more than enjoying the story. It was dark and heavy in places but also a major fluff bomb at the same time--just, not the kind of fluff bomb you'd typically expect. There's a lot going on aside from the mirrored look at the books that came before it, though, so there's a lot to process and take in so you're never without something to focus on. I'll definitely be continuing, but I hope those weird gaps won't. I don't want those fucking with my vibe. 3.25/5? Maybe? Probably.

3.5 Stars ~ I struggled some with this book. It is the first book set in the Wildwood pack which is where Jax and family escaped from in the WitchWolf books. For me, Oakheart dragged in areas, and the serious lack of communication between not just the MCs, but all the characters, was very difficult for me as I couldn't seem to get a feel for any of them. The plot was decent although I spent a LOT of time wondering where they got all the other supplies, outside of wood, for building these houses. I realize it's fiction, and paranormal at that, but come on peeps... there had to be a hardware trip at some point not to mention where did the funds come from to pay for any of it? So, I liked it, but I definitely didn't love it. I'm going to read the next book in the series to see if maybe this one was a fluke, but until then I'm just gonna be scratching my head over Oakheart.

Aleks was the most inept alpha ever. God, it’s like he was waiting for Grant to be served in a plate to take action!
I didn’t feel any deep connection between him and Cash.
Also, a pack who lived without money, electricity and in depilated houses but had lots of food…
A book where we have Alphas but what about Betas or Omegas?
The whole child abuse, what we could assume was SA, and prostitution was so damn uncomfortable and I feel it didn’t add anything to the book. The witches would have anything else but no, they were taking wolves to what I assume sleep with them (cough/ SA them).
I only liked Viktor. I didn’t care for the rest. Sadly I won’t finish this series which sucks bc Viktor is such a grumpy yet protective character and the only one with a backbone. Tho I also liked Leo a bit.

This was a good story, even if parts of it were hard to read. This is the other side of the story - the side where people are still living under Grant and his awful rule as Alpha of the Wildwood pack. Aleks and Cash and all the others suffer so much. It was interesting though to see Cash and Alek’s side to the story especially when it came to going to California when Grant challenged Jax. This story is about survival and overcoming trauma to start building something worthwhile. It’s about not losing hope, even when you feel like there is none to be had. The Wildwood Pack can only get better now and I hope to see more stories in the future. I’m also going to have to read Jax and Dakota’s story again.

Heartbreaking but also hopeful... Oakheart starts a few years before the events of Witchwolf all the way to the end of and just past Moonmagic where we see the story of Cash and Aleks. Both are both have tragic pasts and continued abuse; their story is quite sad and emotional. However they showed a lot of growth and I loved the ending. Their love story spans years but that made the end that much sweeter.

Oakheart is the first book in the Wolves of the Wildwood series. This is the story of Cash and Aleks. This book is set in the Witchwolf world. It starts a few years before Witchwolf and runs through that story and part of Moonmagic. This was a heartbreaking story but it also has many moments of hope and family love. Please read the trigger warnings before you start this book. I loved seeing these two and getting their viewpoint on things from the Witchwolf world. I now want to go back and reread Witchwolf and Moonmagic. This story was filled with so much emotion. There is trauma, love, fear, and found family. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book as a 5 star read.

Danger and adrenaline were faithful companions alongside fear, uncertainty, and a couple others feelings that constantly chipped at their heart.
I liked their moments together, the family bonding time, and how they learned to trust in each other.
There were certain events and developments that will blow your mind and some that still needs an answer.
I liked their adventure and I’m looking forward to the next one.

This was a fantastic look at the other side of the coin. In Moon Magic, we learn more about the Wildwood pack from Jax's point of view. We saw Cash broken and beaten, and Aleks as a confident Alpha to be. Here, we get to learn about what the past few years have been like for those who lived it. The small comforts and escapes of those trying to survive under a brutal bully of a leader. We also see the hope building. Loved the steam and the relationship building. As always, fantastic characters and well written and interesting plot.

You need to have read the Witchwolf books to know who characters are, and whats going on as events happening in Oakheart happened in other books as well. So this one jumps around across years without really letting you know it's happening and could be confusing to a new reader. However if you've read the others, then you'll recognize characters, happenings, etc.
It will be interesting to see further books in this series with Aleks' brothers, there's a lot of good set up for future stories that's for sure!

Not what I Expected
The preview describes a different story than I found in reading the book. Background worldview development is minimal, character development is weak and supporting cast and content fail to deliver the story promised in the description. The storyline is much darker in theme than expected. The relationship between Aleks and Cash has no heat and feels contrived not organic as one would expect after reading the Witchwolf series. It was a DNF at about 60% and I will pass on the rest of this series.

Confused
Three stars for good writing as always with these two, but wow. This is the most convoluted shifter story ever. Confusing in the time goes by, in the way these wolves, who are some strong alphas, let a slimy little wolf alpha traffic pack members to a witch coven. That is not what a wolf is about. Even the alpha heir is sex trafficked to the witch, and all they do is whine and complain because they're to soft to rip out the slimy bastards throat. This is humiliating to wolves everywhere. Like I said......confusing!

I had nothing but hope for Cash and Aleks! Even though the situation was bad and there was a lot of heartbreak, Cash never gave up. He did everything he could for his family and everyone in the pack. Being a carpenter, I loved that he was literally building homes for everyone. Aleks had a lot on his plate for a young wolf to become leader, but my favorite times were when he was close and intimate with Cash.

This was a great first book in a new series. I do, however, recommend reading Witch Wolf series first as it features the earlier characters in this book. This one features Cash and Aleks. This book starts in the early years of the Wildwood pack and runs several years forward. I loved the way these two MC’s are with each other even though they are up against a brutal alpha. I loved the world building with heat and chemistry between them. Cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Lots of tragic and heavy topics in this that explains Cash and Alek's traumatic backgrounds. The book spans a couple of years so things were angsty and dicey for a while. Lots of hurt/comfort but there are wholesome moments too. This is connected to the Witchwolf universe, so it might be best to read that first to get a better grasp of events and timelines.

I devoured this book!
Cash and Aleks live in a pack which has always been run by horrible alphas. Change was coming but not soon enough sadly.
I adored Cash and Aleks -these two stole my heart. They had a beautiful connected and I loved how Aleks and his brothers protected him.
Things took a turn for the worst and I was holding my breath for dear life hoping things would turn out alright.
Brilliant book.

Interesting start to a new series, a spin off from WitchWolf series. I enjoyed how the new pack started. Some bits I had trouble with but that’s on me.

I guess this is a spinoff series, and the authors very much assume you’re familiar with the story. There are huge jumps in time, and I was very confused why no one was standing up for the kids!?

High three - I actually enjoyed this one a lot. Much less cozy than the usual from this pair, with much more stakes in the plot.

Offshoot book from Witchwolf
New series that is an offshoot of The Witchwolf series.
I stayed up way too late reading this book because I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed this story about Cash and Aleks and this storyline about the Wildwood wolves and can already see lots of characters that need their own story.
It took place over a fairly long time and it was interesting to see how these two authors used that longer period to explain how slowly things change sometimes and how different things changed the pack. There was a lot of yearning over those years because the book doesn’t just deal with the main relationship. It’s always a bit more complicated in the first book of a series when the writer has to set so much up about the basic situation.
