Lexika sind zum Nachschlagen da, weshalb sich das Dictionary of Jewish Lore & Legend freilich nicht von der Leber wegliest. Trotzdem bietet es einen hervorragenden Einblick in den das Judentum stets umwehenden Mystizismus mit all seinen Traditionen und Kulturphänomenen. Erstaunlicherweise schafft es Unterman, trotz der entsprechend trockenen Struktur, den Leser innehalten zu lassen; zuweilen ist man gefangen zwischen Ehrfurcht und Verwirrung - und will mehr wissen. Hinzu kommen zahlreiche Abbildungen, die das Bestreben, sich zum einen oder anderen Stichwort tiefer zu belesen, noch anfeuern. Ein inspirierender Exkurs in die kulturell wohl interessanteste aller Weltreligionen.
