3.5 stars
(overall this was 5 stars, but several parts were uber annoying and there were a number of ridiculously illogical plot points so I had to deduct)
LOVE'S CRUEL REDEMPTION was both one of the best and one of the most frustrating of the books in the GHOST BIRD series. It was wonderful because there was finally a lot of real progress made on many fronts - relationship, Ashley Waters, and Volto. It was also action-packed and exciting. Tense. Suspenseful. Engaging.
And it utterly sucked because it was full of contrived plot points that made no sense within the established logic of the series and the characters. They only existed to force the plot in various directions. It was particularly frustrating because the same thing could have easily been achieved in ways that would have made sense and been believable.
It was also, for me, cruel and unusual punishment to be stuck in Nathan's head for half of this book when he is the one character I really don't like. Gah! Why was there another Nathan POV book? Didn't he have a book already? Granted, this one was a bit different than his earlier book because it was dual POV throughout - alternating chapters between Nathan and Sang. (Sang's were in first person, per usual, and Nathan's were in third person.) Regardless, that predisposed me to be cranky while reading LOVE'S CRUEL REDEMPTION.
Overall, I love the realism of the entire GHOST BIRD series. I mean, sure, in the scheme of what might realistically happen in the real world - it's pretty unbelievable. The whole concept of an RH with one girl and NINE guys... yeah. But once you accept the basic premise, I love how GHOST BIRD believably explores the way something like that could happen. And more particularly, how something like that might work when the majority of the players are underage and still dealing with parental and other authority figures impacting their lives and their decisions. Don't get me wrong - all of those impacts can be hellaciously frustrating at times. But I do love feeling like this could really be happening.
My biggest frustration though?
The cliffhanger ending! When I know we won't being seeing book 13 for about a year. *sigh*
UPDATE PROGRESS NOTES:
97.0% "Whoa. The thought had crossed my mind early on, but I completely dismissed it when Volto got so extreme. I sure hope this isn't true, because if it is, she is seriously crazy. It would explain a lot though..."
96.0% "Continuity issue. Just a page earlier it said Victor and Luke headed to Victor's house. It was only Nathan and Sang in Kota's car. So not sure why it is now saying Victor headed to Nathan's house after getting out of Kota's car."
92.0% "Uh... Why do they need to do a search for Nathan? Didn't they replace the GPS in his car after Volto removed it? Shouldn't they be able to just track the car? Another logic flaw here..."
87.0% "WHY THE FRACK ARE YOU DOING THIS NATHAN? YOU ARE A FOOL."
84.0% "Wow! First time this 'radiated' thing was used correctly! NICE! (and finally)"
79.0% "Seriously. This is the dumbest and most contrived plot point of the entire series. Many other times they have stayed AWAY from the Lee house when there is danger to protect Erica and Jessica, to not bring it to their home. And the one time they have proof there is a real threat, they go straight there? But with only Nathan and no working cell phones to protect them? It is ridiculous!"
77.0% "Hendricks and Volto are both problems. Two of them being together is no proof against being taken. Mr. Blackbourne has just decreed new protocols to stay in public areas/together. And yet he sends Nathan and Sang off alone without a real plan where to go? Why not keep them with the group? Why not send them with Victor to his safe house? Why not send Kota with them if they are going to the Lees? IT. MAKES. NO. SENSE!"
75.0% "You know, it just occurred to me... Why doesn't the team have keys to the school, given their mission there and that they keep keys to just about everything else? That seems a big oversight. Especially with all the cameras and stuff they plant!"
75.0% "Honestly, Jasmine, Lavender? That sounds more like a feminine scent than a male one."
68.0% "Holy crow Sang, SHUT UP! You and your constantly hovering angsty thoughts. DRIVES. ME. NUTS!"
66.0% "Oh MAN this is going to backfire. There is no way Danielle is doing this out of the goodness of her own heart. She doesn't HAVE goodness. And Nathan knows she is manipulative. God he is an idiot. Did I ever mention I don't like Nathan? *sigh*"
61.0% "*giddy laugh* Okay, THAT was certainly unexpected. How on earth do they swing this? And how does this keep Sang off the official radar!? Wow..."
50.0% "Come on Sang, tell them Volto warned you not to come into school today!!!!"
48.0% "And it is another patently absurd plot device since Nathan would NOT have just dropped the phone. Nor have gotten out of the car without it even if he had. *sigh*"
48.0% "Oh fracking shite. Seriously? Another stupid cell phone handling that results in Sang's cell phone being taken. AGAIN? Come ON!"
48.0% "Holy crow. This really bugs me. They never finish conversations. If Jessica had made that reference to me with all that was going on, I would be ASKING her what she meant! So dumb. Kind of like Sang not following up with Wil just because Dr. Green arrived and distracted her. Really bugs me."
45.0% "Soooo smooth Sang. Sheesh."
43.0% "This is definitely the most exciting and tension-filled installment in GHOST BIRD to date! But because it is, I am finding the alternating POV's oh so very frustrating!"
42.0% "Oh man, really? What the hell are the chances of that!?"
40.0% "Uh...seems a little odd for Wil to have been working both at the cell phone store AND here at the grocery store, doesn't it? Not suspicious at all!"
37.0% "I'm not entirely sure why the team doesn't feel/know this is a setup. Hadn't Mr. Hendricks made it clear before when Sang was listening at the coffee shop that everything was done and all they had to do now was wait?"
35.0% "That is worrisome. If Luke could hear their quiet talking in the security trailer from outside with the door closed, it is NOT very soundproof. Which is a real problem for using it as a base of operations IMO...."
33.0% "Seems like a slight continuity issue. I could have sworn in the last book, when they got the security trailer, that people walked into the trailer and could see Gabe sleeping on a cot while Mr. Blackbourne was standing at desks and it sounded like all one space apart from the bathroom and a closet. This makes it sound like two main spaces."
33.0% "Letting Danielle play you all like this is bad bad bad news. You are better off getting her wired so you can monitor her and Marie discussing what is going on. And GET THEM OUT OF YOUR SPACE! Too much they can find out. And you are already letting them know WAY too much."
31.0% "Uh... does this seem like a setup to anyone else? Kind of feeling like Mr. Hendricks has their number and is playing them now."
30.0% "I don't get why they would need to physically follow her. Why not just follow her with the cameras? This seems like another illogical plot device just to make the next thing happen."
24.0% "It is always odd to me that the first thing the team does when entering their office or Music Room B at the HS isn't sweeping for bugs. Because if I were Mr. Hendricks trying to learn what they are up to, in addition to having them followed, I would be trying to record or listen in on the spaces I know they congregate and are likely to say things I want to hear. Strange that they never have..."
21.0% "Holy crow, Danielle is awful. But then so is Marie. They should have gotten way away from that mess ages ago :/"
17.0% "Argh! Has everyone not read Sang's journal letter to Sean yet?? And if not, then why the hell not? What are they all waiting on? Why the hell are they not having a family meeting to try to list potential issues and get ahead of some of this nonsense. They are not in school right now, but they are just drifting along and seem to be reacting to everything instead of getting proactive. Very frustrating."
14.0% "LMAO and then there are the times when they act like young teenagers. Especially when the three amigos get together. This whole bath bomb/spa day scene is hilarious. I love Luke and Gabriel :) (And North walking in on the three of them had me in stitches)"
12.0% "Luke is really going to be the saving grace for this whole relationship dynamic for the group. As immature and silly as he can be in some ways, he is emotionally very mature in terms of the group dynamic."
9.0% "And frack. This book is starting off utterly sucky. Why can't we possibly be given even a partial book to enjoy what is going on? Why, the second things start to improve, does more drama and crap have to happen to derail everything? And why is it ALL relationship/family crap nonstop the last few books with next to nothing about the mysteries and suspense of the Ashley Waters and Volto missions? *growl*"
3.0% "Man, I hate stories that start this way. With some super dramatic event occurring in the first chapter and then the next chapter goes back in time to show you how they got to that event. It feels like such a cheap way to generate tension or try to hook the reader."
1.0% "Woohoo! Re-read complete and now I get to enjoy the new installment. Happy happy camper here :)"
