3.75/5 Vaughn, aka Wizard Stalker, spent his childhood under the control of an evil sorcerer, Margog. He was forced to commit atrocities against his will but still able to see through his eyes. Now, he is a bounty hunter for evil magic users in an attempt to make up for what he was forced to do as a child. While collecting a bounty, he is passed a note in his hotel asking for help in another town. Larrenvale is definitely not what it seems and he must figure out what is really going on before the evil there ends the world. Vaughn is a tormented man set on redemption. He has no tolerance for those who are evil and will pursue them through deserts and sewers (always sewers). Even without the promise of payment, he heads to Larrenvale because he wants to do the right thing. Chief, his demon amulet, is the snarky sidekick in this book. We don’t learn too much about him except about the here and now. I would have liked to have gotten more backstory about that character for sure. This book takes place on another planet, Jalldoon. There are many creatures talked about, but with their species names they are all easy enough to picture and keep straight. Sometimes with sci-fi type books it gets confusing to me so I liked that. This book is a mash up of different genres as well. It’s definitely fantasy with the magic and mages, a little sci-fi with the different planet, a little western and portal as well. It was a quick, easy read and I enjoyed the story. It could have been a little longer with some of the scenes and characters developed a little more in my own opinion, but overall it was a good debut from this author.
This story feels like playing a brutal, low-level D&D campaign where the DM is actively trying to kill you. You have a gritty wizard hunter named Vaughn, his possessed amulet Chief, and a badass warrior nun named Sister Clare taking on a "rogue mage" quest outside a fortified, paranoid town. It reads exactly like a high-stakes mission you'd pull straight off a tavern notice board. The combat gives off massive The Witcher meets Warhammer vibes, treating magic as a corrupting nightmare rather than a flashy superpower. It perfectly captures that tense, scraping-by atmosphere of a gaming party that is completely out of health potions but somehow survives. If you love tactical monster-hunting and dark fantasy, you definitely need to pick this up.
