I was looking for something light, without angst or drama, and the cover of this caught my eye while browsing Amazon's "Best Sellers" in YA Gay Fiction. It's soooo not my kind of story and I'm sure the intended audience for this is probably teenagers. I don't know what I was thinking but I bought it anyway. Turns out it was just what I needed.

This is a sweet and funny short story about a young man (16 yrs old) who suddenly finds out he has superpowers. The writing is good and the story is entertaining. The main characters are easy to like and sufficiently fleshed out. There's romance here but it's part of the story NOT the story (if that makes sense). I'd rate this PG but nothing more than kissing happens on the page.

The Author's page says this is going to be a trilogy so I'm looking forward to the next two installments.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*

I don't usually read superhero books, but I couldn't pass this one up.

Untouchable is a fun, easy read. The writing is great and I really enjoyed how quick the story moved along. I'm not one to give spoilers in my reviews, but I will urge you to read this book. This is definitely a book I'll be reading with my kids.

I'm looking forward to seeing more from this author.

It was OK, but did I like it? Everything seemed completely average or not very imaginative, the super powered girl became a damsel in distress, and the romance was completely lacking, not to mention our hero is a cheater. Further insights to come if I feel like it but at this point, not likely.

(From my blog) ARC given in exchange of an honest review.

This book came to me a bit by chance, thanks to the author who asked me if I wanted to help him for the realease of his first book. Because I have a soft spot for first publications and YA stories, I was happy to help. I liked the cover and the blurb so I asked if I could have an ARC. I'm sooo happy I had the chance to read Untouchable before its release. It would have been a shame to miss this goodread. This is the first story I read about superheroes and so I was excited to read something new to me.

Untouchable is a short read that all the book lovers, who look for something different and amazing to read, will enjoy. It's funny, sweat and exciting ! I loved the main character, Ethan, quickly because he was genuine, endearing and authentic. I felt he was true and refreshing.

The plot was simple but catchy, compelling, and very well developed. (Though I would have loved more !) I also enjoyed the romance between two superheroes. It was cute, realistic and deep. Ethan and Greyson's love story was perfectly brought and nice to read. I can't wait to read more about them and the other characters !

Now, Untouchable being a first publication, I need to point out the flawless writing. This book touched my heart and I loved all of it ! I laughed and smiled a lot while reading. I can't wait for the sequel !

I highly recommand this book ! Say au revoir to vampires and ghosts, Superheroes, here they come !

fun, quick and fairly cute, Untouchable is a Superhero story written with a loveable voice. My only critique is that I want to see more, since this was only a novella. I'd love to see where the author takes these books.

Fun, campy, everything you'd expect from a superhero tale.

But ‘Untouchable’ was a little too short. There was little world building and hardly any time to give the characters’ back story or motivation. It just jumped straight into the action. The narrative has a comedic dry wit that is pleasing, and I wish this had been longer, more developed because Starcevic's writing style is brilliant.

I staggered a little catching up with the lingo as well. Without the landscape being step up and time taken to explain the slang I was left re-reading parts to make sense of it all.

In the same vein, the relationship between Ethan (our protagonist) and Greyson didn't have time to build, and felt rushed - forced even. I love the concept of gay teen superheroes, but we need more “story” for this coupling to truly shine.

Additionally, because of the plot being rushed along, some of the character’s reactions felt fake/forced. Would have loved this story to progress organically. It would have been brilliant. There is so much potential here, I was really hoping this could have been developed into a full length novel. With the campy, witty writing style I got to sample, it would become a fast favourite.

We get introduced to some interesting characters and superheroes. Their powers are fun (even if a little derivative,) but the tone of the novella is set early and you get a lot of punch for such a brief short.

Looking forward to the next installment, ‘Unmasked’ but given the authors publisher has gone belly-up, it's uncertain when Starcevic's work will be available for purchase again. I emailed the author directly to get an e-copy for this review. I’m keeping my eye on this one – great things could happen :)

I received an ARC in exchange for a review.

Before I started reading, I thought it was curious that the book only has 54 pages, yet the description of the book suggests that there's quite a story going on. When I started reading, it didn't take long for me to notice how that played out: the story was very rushed, which made the story sometimes feel very forced. Characters didn't act naturally.

I always like to say that characters are the base of a story: if you have good characters, you've got a good base. Bad characters, bad base. And this book unfortunately has bad characters. As I mentioned, the story is rushed, and so are the characters. The characters feel like a bunch of randomly selected characters traits. Real people are more than that: character traits are related. For example, I'm someone who asks myself questions about life, and about the way people are. That makes me non-judgemental: because I always wonder what motives people have for a certain action, I never judge until I know their motives. I can't see this relation between character traits in the book.

Something I'd like to compliment to author is the writing style: it's good, and easy to read.

The story itself is not that bad either. It's absolutely nothing special, but it's light-hearted, and everyone needs a light-hearted story sometimes.

So, if you're looking for a very fast-paced story I'd recommend this book, but if you want deep characters and the time to actually get to know them, I'd not recommend it.

*I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*

Untouchable is a short, but entertaining read, and an undeniably important addition to the superhero genre. Full of diverse characters, entertaining powers, and a cute love story, Untouchable is more about people than saving the world, and I'm perfectly okay with that.

Our story follows Ethan Elliot, a teenage boy (who is gay!) who finds himself with superpowers and ends up with an awesome opportunity. Ethan was refreshing. He was honest, he was funny, and he had parents and friends who supported his sexuality and his life choices and that made me really, really happy.

There were only two complaints I had about this book. The first is that the writing tends to go back and forth between very straightforward and clear cut, to something more rambling and metaphorical. It actually works really well, but I would have liked to see the two intersect better.

The second is that it's too short, quite frankly. I would love to see more of this world, and I would love to see more of these characters, and the 74 page ARC I received just was not enough!

Regardless, Untouchable is a wonderful story and I cannot wait to see more from this author. If you're looking for diverse superheroes, child friendly stories, and some witty writing, I definitely recommend checking this out.

Aussie author S.A. Starcevic's first Teen/YA/Urban Fantasy/Superhero short story with an LGBT romance twist, UNTOUCHABLE, is a quick and amazing read. It was easy to get inside the head of the main character and narrator, Ethan, as he discovered his new life as a teen superhero. Think Lizzie McQuire, but teen boy instead. And so much better...because SUPERHEROES!!

Starcevic just released UNMASKED, the follow up to UNTOUCHABLE, and I just finished! Review up soon.

I am a 56-year-old grandmother, and upon finishing this story, my first thought was that this is something that I would like my gay grandson to read... if I ever have a gay grandson. It was like watching Saturday morning cartoons, but with a twist. Which for me was a good thing!

Is this story for everyone? NO... but, it tells a story that everyone needs to read. Acceptance for who we are, whether it be gay, having superpowers or just your everyday Joe trying to get by... we are all important and deserve to be "seen" and loved... just my thoughts of course! Now, I have to read book two... just to see what the kids are up to next! *headdesk* LOL!!!

I'm a bit torn on this book because while I enjoyed it well enough, there were aspects of it that were very underdeveloped that just ruined the enjoyment. I think this would have made me fangirl hard if it had been fleshed out into a full length novel. My biggest gripe was I didn't get to know any of the characters and at times they were inconsistent.

I found it hard to believe that Ethan's parents would just roll over and let him be a super hero. There was no "But you have school to finish!" "It's dangerous!" They just said "It's your choice" and didn't even cry. Then they were absent the rest of the story. Gravity Girl was supposed to be this amazing hero, but gets knocked out in the first fight and kidnapped in the second. I felt like she was a damsel in distress instead of a hero. Element Boy I can't recall anything about. Ethan was a bit too Mary Sue. He learned his powers in one session then did something he said himself in narration at the end that should be impossible. A handful of other characters were briefly introduced and it was a nice, diverse cast, but there was no exploration to let me get to know them to give a damn about them.

The writing was good and it looked well edited with no typos. The story idea is solid. It just didn't click with me and I think if it had been a full length novel that spent more time with the characters I would have enjoyed it a whole lot more.

Sweet and heroic.

Untouchable is about a guy named Ethan who happens to be at the wrong place and wrong time and BAM! he gets superpowers and becomes a superhero.

Although it's a really good book indeed, I just wanted and expected more from this book. Mind you, I enjoyed reading this, but I just wasn't captivated by it. It had romance, it had plot, but it wasn't like right there on the bar I happened to put it.

I did like the romance in this book though.

It was cute and I just also wanted more from their chemistry. I loved the little things they do and it was precious.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much!
“Ethan Elliot is no stranger to secret identities. As an LGBT teen, he’s dealt with secrets all his life. Nevertheless, when his powers kick in and he’s whisked away to join a team of superheroes, he dons a mask of a different kind—one that sees him battling supervillains and testing his limits.

However, there’s more going on behind the scenes than capes and costumes. At the headquarters of the Protectorate, he makes unlikely friends with Gravity Girl and Element Boy. Except Element Boy might turn out to be more than just a friend, and Gravity Girl is battling demons of her own.

Ethan will discover what it means to be a hero, and must learn that even superheroes aren’t untouchable.”

“All kids dream of being superheroes.”
In a world where superheroes exist, that might be even truer. Except that our main character never wanted to be a hero. He was just in the wrong place, at the wrong time (or perhaps in the right place, at the right time). Now faced with superpowers, Ethan must learn to be a superhero and everything that comes with it.
Ethan is the sarcastic and funny narrator of his own story. His reactions to things were hilarious sometimes. Yes, there was the odd metaphor, but we can let it go seeing that he is very young and imaginative.
His backstory was interesting and so were his reasons for participating in everything. I am sure that I, given the opportunity to be a superhero, would take that on the spot as well, even if I was terrified brainless every time I’d have to face a super villain.
I liked the tidbits we have from Ethan’s and the other superheroes’ normal lives: their family stories, reactions, interests, etc. I thought some characters could have been better developed, especially the side characters, like the doctor. However, I think that, considering the length of the novella, we could gather a lot of information about the characters already.
The action scenes were nice and read like a superhero story. Ethan and his superhero boyfriend were so cute, but I wanted more on their relationship. This part felt a little rushed, but again I must say: the length does not contribute much exposure to their relationship. I hope to get more on that later!
I wanted some more world build. I mean, a world where superheroes and super villains exist and have names and a fanbase? Awesome. But, where did it all come from? How did that happen? Was it always like this? I know I will be repeating myself here, but again the length of the novella did not help here. I wanted more and that is one of my biggest complains: I need more from this world and the characters. They managed to make me very curious and even to care about them in 54 pages!
Overall, I really liked the story and the characters and I would recommend it to anyone searching for a nice, short superhero story or a nice, short LGBT story.

At 54 page Untouchable is a very short read. I actually didn't realise this when I first picked it up and read a chapter and went to sleep, the next day I was like ...why? Why did I do that?

Anyway Untouchable follows Ethan, who at the start of the book is in the wrong place at the wrong time and finds himself in the middle of a supervillain and superhero battle.

One thing leads to another and whilst he should find himself on the other side dead after trying to save a girl, he's actually doing okay. Todays the day he learns he's different. He has superpowers.

I really enjoyed the book, it was fast paced and fun. The narrative is quirky and reminds me of Barry Allen in the current TV series, it has the right voice for the protagonist.

Another thing I really liked is that Ethan is gay. I'm not sure but this may be the first, or one of only a few, book that I've read featuring a queer main character. They're like superheroes themselves, so few and special so we have to cherish them when we do find them.

Anyway I'm getting distracted here. The book follows Ethan as he adapts to his new life in a new home with other superhero teenagers. Its here we meet Greyson who quickly becomes Ethans crush and its (mostly - I'll get back to this at the end) a really sweet romance that is told between them.

The villains have really crazy powers and I would honestly be terrified if I had to face up against them myself after only knowing I had powers for such a short time but Ethan and the others face them as any superhero would!

Its so short I don't want to give away any major things that happen but just put it this way I really enjoyed it.

It did almost get 4 stars but I had two complaints about it (sorry Starcevic) so I had to remove half a star. The only issues I had with this book was that it had a negative portrayal of a long distance relationship and I'm honestly just kind of sick of reading this trope. I'm in a ldr why can't we be happpy and handle the distance? Why do we have to be portrayed as cheaters and give-r up-ers. Oh yeah so the reason I said Ethan and Greysons romance was mostly really sweet was due to the fact Ethan is already in a relationship and doesn't end it before acting on his feelings for Greyson. :(

The other thing that was a little annoying was it was the female character who became a damsel in distress. I mostly let this one go because it wasn't a huge uproar of anger I felt about this, I didn't really feel annoyed until I reflected on it, because at the end of the day, in this story it was handled well and she can kick butt.

I received a copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review.

Untouchable by S. A. Starcevic is about Ethan Elliot, a young man who gets sucked into the world of Heroes and Villains when all he wanted to do was break up with his boyfriend. Placed in a life or death situation, he discovers his ability to absorb and manipulate energy and uses this to help save his new friends.

The plot really adopted the tropes of superhero stories, which is something I really enjoyed. However, due to the limitations of the structure of a novella, I just felt like everything was a bit rushed. I barely had time to get to know the characters before I was thrown into action and romance, which isn’t always a bad thing, but made it difficult to connect with the protagonist in this case.

I really enjoyed the writing style. Ethan’s perspective was a mix of sarcasm, confusedness and enthusiasm for his new role- something that was really fun. And I actually laughed out loud once or twice, which is rare for me. Because of the limitations of the 40-page length, there was a lot of telling rather than showing. But I suppose that’s likely to happen when you’re spending time in the perspective of a teenage boy!

I also think I'm probably not the target audience for a story like this; I think it would probably be better suited to a 13-16 year old boy. This probably had a big impact on how much I enjoyed the story. I liked it nonetheless and would recommend it to anyone whose interest is piqued by the story.

My favourite thing about Untouchables is the LGBT+ element. Representation is so incredibly important and I definitely think that Ethan Elliot could be a hero for many kids to look up to!

3/5 stars! I liked it, but I had some problems with it that prevented me from enjoying it as much as I could have.

Halfway through I was sad, but only because I knew it was too short. I wanted more time in this world because I was really enjoying my time in it.I just wanted to magically delay the ending of it somehow. I paused at the halfway point and just wished it could be longer. Still a great debut from S.A. Starcevic.

I really loved the characters. I mean all the characters. The scene with Ethan’s parents was wonderful. I felt like my parents would react somewhat similarly if someone took a questionable superhero base. We see the other superheroes for a short period in the story and I found myself loving them as well. The description of them made me wish I could see more of them.Plus there is so much diversity in this book without the writing attempting to push it at you. It was really natural.

The romance in this book was really sweet. I loved it, but definitely wished I could either see it develop more over some time or see some of Greyson’s perspective. I wanted to understand what they both were feeling throughout the book.

I usually am totally okay with things being standalones, but I would definitely buy the follow-up if there was one for this. I ended up giving this a 4 star ranking. Loved the characters, plot, and writing style. I just wish I'd been able to see more development in some areas. Really hope to read something of more substantial length from this author in the future.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.*

To be honest, superhero books aren't really my thing, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to read this one. The cover immediately drew me in, and the blurb sealed the deal.

Untouchable is a short but well-crafted story. The characters are really likable and relatable, and Ethan's internal struggle with his feelings toward Greyson along with the new life he's been thrown into is endearing and well thought out, making you want to root for him from the beginning. Starcevic does a really good job of bringing not only the characters to life but also the world in which they live.

I had very few gripes about this book (in fact, I would have loved to see more of it!), but there were some minor kinks I felt could have been ironed out, including a handful of inconsistencies in the descriptions and several places throughout the narrative where I feel the sentences could have been tightened a little. And in terms of the length, I think a few more subplots might have been beneficial and could have perhaps made this piece even stronger. However, having said that, for a debut novella, this is an excellent story, and I very much enjoyed the piece and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, quick read. Even if you're not a fan of superhero stories, don't miss out on this one! It's well worth it. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

S.A. Starcevic contacted me earlier this week about his novella, Untouchable. It's an LGBT themed superhero story. Did I want to review it? Uhm, super duper yes! So without further ado - here it is.

p.s READ IT :)

While it is a short story, it's one fantastic read. I highly, xten times, recommend checking it out. I was super excited to read a book that featured two things I'm passionate about. Untouchable did not disappoint. The characters are cute, and well established for the first book in this series.

It has a touch of romance, drama and humour. Honestly, I wish this book had been in schools when I was younger. Untouchable is a light read which is another reason I think it's perfect - all ages can read it. It's inspiring and makes you smile the entire time! I squealed at least a hundred times, oh gosh! <3

This is the kind of content I want to see more of! The saddest part was the ending. I wanted to continue reading about the adventures these characters were yet to have. I hope more people pick up Untouchable and enjoy the novella as much as I have. I hope they want to read more of this series and that they let S.A Starcevic know how amazing Untouchable is.

Please, give this book a chance - it's so worth it!

*I received this novella in exchange for an honest review*

UNTOUCHABLE delivers a short satisfying read, which will appeal to younger teens and superhero fans. What Starcevic does so skillfully, is craft a central character not defined by his sexuality. Although it is explicitly mentioned, Ethan does come off as an autonomous, layered character who has a sense of purpose and development. This is what gives Starcevic's novella it's appeal. The theme of identities, particularly hidden ones, will certainly appeal to LGBT teens.

However, the narrative does appear a little rushed at points, and dips into genre cliche occasionally. The superhero story is so ambitious, that we get little sense of the science behind the powers - something which would give the story more depth - or the other characters conflicts beside Ethan's. We get a snippet of Gravity Girl's inner demons, but the story could do with some expansion to really allow it's audience to be submerged in the world.

The story itself is quick, fresh and easy to follow. Ethan makes a likable protagonist, and the overriding themes of the novel are subtly incorporated, which is commendable in a story this short. 3/5 stars.

It was the first superhero story I've read, so I didn't really know what to expect - but I really enjoyed it!
It's a short read, nice and easy, yet interesting. The main character, Ethan, made me giggle so many times and his sense of humor is on point. I loved his relationship with Grayson, it's super sweet and just made me feel happy!
I can tell that Lara has an interesting background, but the author only slightly touches on it. We don't really know that much about Grayson either. I wish we knew more about them.
S. A. Starcevic's writing is flawless, I have to say that. I literally swallowed this book, it was so well-written.
My only problem with it is that it's a novella, so it's short. There are things about characters, relationships, etc. that I would like to get to know. I hope to see more of this world and these characters!
I rated it 4/5 stars (the length took away one star). If you're looking for something easy and quick - I would definitely recommend it!

I was given a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, so here we go!

The writing was easy to read. Very non-taxing, which is ideal for a short novella like this one. I found it was a good book to pick up and put down in any moments I could spare, however this is probably one most people could finish in a day.
The story isn't very complicated, but could have benefited from more description and character development. There were a lot of characters popping up but not a lot of time to get to know any of them. The book delivered queer and androgynous superheroes as promised, yet I couldn't help but feel it was all a little rushed.
My only niggle besides that was some of the naming decisions. For me it was a little uncomfortable seeing names like 'Greyson' and 'Slade' in a Superhero story, but once you get your head around the fact they aren't the DC characters it's alright.
Overall I thought it was a nice little story to pass time with, with a really cool concept. I hope that in the Authors future work there is more time devoted to character building.

I have not read book about superheroes before, so I was very excited when I was given this opportunity. And I wasn't disappointed.

Main protagonist of this story is sixteen year old Ethan Eliot, LGBT teen, who discovers that he has superpowers. Soon after that, he becomes part of Protectorate and meet others superheroes.
Ethan is very lovable character, kind, funny and witty. I enjoyed his way of telling his story and how he showed us “behind the scenes” of superhero business.

There is action and there is romance. What I loved about this romance – It was on spot, as part of the story, not the story itself. It wasn't forced into story, it was nice and sweet.

The story was fast paced and that not might suits for everyone, but it is in fact short novella. I didn't mind the fast pace, although I am sorry we didn’t have a chance to learn more about other characters. I hope there is more coming from the author in the future.

It's a novella, at 39 pages, but it manages to fit almost everything you would get in a 300-page novel. There's action, romance, and some form of a backstory.

I like that the story has diverse characters, from Gladiatrix being (possibly) Latino, and Roxy being Asian. It's feels fresh, even though some superhero names are cliche (I do like Tempest, though).

The plot is clear, and well-written. I think this could work as a graphic novel/comic book, or perhaps expanded into a full novel. I would like to know more about Lara's and Greyson's backstory, or even the origins of the Protectorate. It's also quite a fun read, with Ethan being quite sassy (although quite stereotypical, with him being gay and everything).

In short, it's really good read. Hopefully, there will be sequels (with plot twists, like, Ethan's parent were once part of the Protectorate, but they retired because Ethan was born).

Thanks, S.A. Starcevic, for the review copy.

Although outside the usual genre of books I read, I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up a copy of this novella.

This is the story of Ethan Elliot, San Francisco native navigating his way through the typical teenage drama most kids face - from a LGBT perspective. As though his life weren't already complicated enough, why not throw in the emergence of a few super villains, and the development of his own super powers?

I liked this story because it moved quickly, yet gave me enough time to develop an honest affection for Ethan. Without giving too much of the story away, I found that the character-driven plot was original and unpredictable; unlike so many of the stories I've ready lately. My biggest disappointment was that this novella ended far too soon - it almost felt like a teaser and gave me a thirst for more to come from S. A. Starcevic. I would definitely recommend that others read this story.
