As the blight spreads, destroying the land, Cara’s new subjects turn on her, and Brendan and Drake are no longer there to help her. The Darksiders thought she’d be pliable, or maybe even a miracle-worker, and it’s not as easy to scrub away Sadler’s influence as she thought. But Scarlet isn’t her only priority any more, and once the ceremony to swear her in as regent is done, it’ll be time for Cara to join forces with the kings, find a way to stop the blight, and prove to the fae that she can be the leader they need. It took a Darksider to steal the throne; it’ll take a faery queen to keep it.
There were some slower, uncertain points earlier on in this series, but I persevered and now...color me impressed. I can finally get a sense what the author is doing here, the overall plot and character arcs, and it's epic. The characters--their personal journeys, growth, and roles to play--are riveting, and I still have no idea where the plot is going. Surprises are still hopefully in store!
Claire Farrell, you Irish goddess you.
And, good lordy...BRENDAN?!? Swoon.
I want to have your little, green-eyed fairy babies. I'm crushing so hard.
What an amazing friend he has been to Cara (who is not always the easiest person to be around or care for). I love his backstory, his quest for atonement, and how he has grown into a brave, caring man worthy of his crown. I am keeping my fingers crossed for this ship to (finally) set sail (and, of course, some sexy times).
And Drake! Poor Drake. What a beautifully complex and conflicted character. I just have a thing for silver-haired fae men. ;)
On to the Kings novella next. Can't wait for both of the kings' POV!
Many thanks to xxkitsunexx for the recommendation! :-)
This part of Cara's story went by fast but much happened. My only complaint is that Cara and Brendan aren't together still. It is so frustrating. Little to no romance is taking place and the land is dying. Cara killed the man behind it but now she has a god to deal with. She is only human so even with the objects of power and her allies, I don't see how this story can ever have a happy ending.
I wish I could live in Claire's brain and interact with such amazing worlds and characters. I don't know exactly what to say about Blight. Of course it was incredibly well written, the voice of the characters, scene description and flow of the words on the page brings to life the world of Chaos. Claire paints with words like a true master of the arts and I am dying to know how the story of the realms beloved Scarlet and her heroin of a mother Queen Clara, King Brendan, King Drake and the rest of the sordid Chaos World family turns out.
WHOA...that was intense! Its hard to be a good Queen when there are so many strikes against you, the biggest one...being human! Cara does a pretty decent job but like Vix said, she needs to be a ruler first and friend second, because of her lapse in judgement one of the sweetest characters in this series has been lost. That was emotional!
So much happened in this book, I couldn't put it down. Cara, while having so much on her plate, truly is a fool. Brendan has been after her for a while now and because of her stupid ass insecurities, she always walked away, only to get all jealous because he's marrying that weird fish lady. I think her chance to be with him has passed, I really feel bad for her because I think she's either going to end up alone or with someone stupid just so she won't be alone.
So the first of many tasks has been accomplished..let's see what happens when Brendan returns from his voyage!!!
Darkness is taking over and it's not just the land it's trying to devour. Those who are needed the most have been divided again and again. In an effort to rid the fae realm of the blight friends that now seem more like rivals and rivals that are now more than friends have to team up and figure out the riddle of what the blight is and what will it take to kill it.
I know I've said this before but I am in love with this series!! I couldn't wait for this book to be released and now I am so sad that its over. Even more said that there is only one more in the series. The characters and the world are epic. I would never get tired of reading their stories. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy and especially the Fae.
I loved it. I really enjoy watching (reading) Cara grow and find herself as a person, mom, and queen. I need the next book like now. I really want to see Cara and Brendan together, anyone else hoping they end up married?
Sadler is dead. Cara is Queen regent of the Darkside. Drake and Brendan are both hurt and shocked. Oh, and the fae realm’s blight is still getting worse. Guess that blows the “Sadler Causes the Blight” theory out of the water, doesn’t it?
As a newly appointed regent, Cara wants to stop the blight from spreading further, attempt to please each and everyone in the Chaos Court, be a loving mother to Scarlet and continue to have friendly relations with both Brendan and Drake. I don’t know about anyone else, but that sounds like quite a list of things to do. Talk about over-achieving. Perhaps the only thing that Cara knows for certain is that she needs both Brendan and Drake to help.
After an awkwardly hilarious celebration for Scarlet as heir, Cara finally manages to get both kings in a room so that all of them can discuss their next steps.
All of them accept the fact that the blight will eventually overwhelm their world and that while Sadler may have been the initial reason for the blight, his deal with a sleeping god is what makes it continue. Sadler may be dead, but the god is still starting to wake. Another possible reason the blight spreads so quickly is that the fade is still open in the location where Cara and the others pulled Brendan back. Following a tip from Bart, the three of them decide that they must find four lost ancient treasures to stop the god and close the fade; two of which were already in Sadler’s possession and now Cara’s.
If you have stuck with the story so far, Blight returns to the format of a quest like readers originally experienced with the second book, Fade. Cara, Brendan and Drake set out with a small group to see if they can locate the two other treasures. Eventually, the group splits with Brendan heading out across the sea to the lands where the first trees are said to be while Cara and Drake look for the stone that will close the opening of the fade.
As far as another book to the series goes, I enjoyed reading Blight. Cara was no longer staying in castle and trying to be a politician. Instead, they were out in the faery world meeting new people and creatures alike. One of the things I love most about this series so far is the fae folk that live in this world. Some of these people are downright eerie and creepy.
The other thing I liked about this particular section of the series is that you start to see hints of the old Drake and Cara dynamic again. As far as characters go, I like Drake but there have been moments in the past few books where I’ve had to shake my head at him. For some ungodly reason, I’m still waiting for Brendan to do something twisted. I just don’t trust him yet and I can’t fathom why I think he is going to turn out bad. Or maybe I just enjoyed the connection that had been between Drake and Cara in Soul and I’m still holding out for him.
But I do have to agree with Drake here when he makes the snide comment about King Brendan making everyone else look bad. Catty, but I relate to his feelings.
Blight ends with something we’ve kind of been waiting for since a few books back and, while it’s a cliffhanger, you know that some serious stuff is about to happen. For example, the conclusion.
Now the favorites…
Favorite Character: I always try to pick a new character, but I have to admit I was happy to see the old Drake again.
Favorite Runner-Up: I am loving Drake’s gift: a pair of cu sidhe hounds. Puppies! I want them.
Least Favorite Character: Yvette is so obvious it’s annoying, but I have to give her kudos. I only dislike her because you kind of have too. Otherwise, she’s a hilarious addition.
Favorite Fairy Tale Gone Horrid: The creepy blackthorn stick men. Just trust me on this one.
Favorite Moment: The party where Cara gets “poisoned” so that her emotions get out of control. I laughed the entire time I read it because Cara is just too much like me when I’ve had too much to drink. Also, Brendan and Drake trying to handle her in this situation is funny too. Poor guys never really had a chance.
Least Favorite Moment: Drake realizing he lost the family he’d always wanted. For people who like Drake, this is heart-breaking. Good, but heart-breaking.
Favorite Quote: Actually, it’s more of a conversation that just reminded me of the old Cara/Drake dynamic:
Drake: “It’s true. The gossip in the courts is always ridiculous, but you were the one constant – the human who changed everything. The one who kept two souls in one body. The one who freed the wrong soul. The one who went to the Fade to bring back the true king. The one who carried an heir. The one who got away. The warrior queen. And now this will be spoken of for lifetimes. Our great-great-great grandchildren will know Cara Kelly’s true name. Don’t you know how special that is?”
Cara: “I’m the upstart who stole a crown and caused the blight to worsen. The one who ruined everything for everyone, and now I’m known for going back to the places I’ve already visited in a weak attempt to fix my own mistakes.”
Drake: “Now you’re just fishing for compliments.”
