Addison, a trauma nurse, got dumped by her doctor fiancé Garrett. Since they work at the same hospital, she’s taking a leave of absence. She packs as much as she can, and her brother Cole tells her she can go to Rockford, where his best friend Mike has a guest house she can stay in. So she goes, still overwhelmed by what happened.
I know a little something about that.
A few years before I met my husband, I was engaged to a guy whom I thought would be my forever. He dumped me six weeks before the wedding, devastating me. It took me years (and therapy) to understand that he wasn’t good enough for me in the first place, but at the time the breakup happened, I blamed myself. So I understand all of Addison’s feelings as she processes what her ex did. (Needless to say, I found my guy, and we’ve been married for almost 29 years.)
Mike obviously knows Addison because her brother is his best friend, but it’s been a while since he’s seen her. His golden retriever, Scout, immediately expresses his affection for her, which turns into a cute, friendly battle between these two about whom Scout loves best. (Note: the dog’s affections are fickle and prone to change.) He’s been through his own loss, and seems to know when to give space and when to talk.
One could call this a slow burn, but from the time Addison arrives until Mike makes a move to keep her…well, that’s only five days. Can you know that someone is meant for you in five days? Yes, you can. You can even know it on the day you meet that special someone.
I enjoyed this story, and I appreciated how Addison handled her ex, especially when he starts making overtures about wanting her back. Too bad for the ex, because she finally realized that she can do better. The happy ending made me a little weepy, and that’s not a complaint. I think the greatest message here is to know your worth, and know that if something feels wrong, trust that intuition. Thankfully, both Mike and Addison do that. Come for the sweet romance, stay for the scene-stealing dog, and get the book.

A lovely story steeped in romantic fiction and a HEA that will make you sigh and smile.
Wonderful characters and especially the dog, Scout! The town is definitely fictional and has no resemblance to the actual town of Rockford, Illinois. Regardless of that, readers will enjoy the fictional town and sweet story.

Addison and Mike have both known loss of love, him tragically and she because her selfish cheating ex took her for granted. She stays in his guest house to figure what comes next after the life she knew imploded. His goofy dog and family loves her.There’s a potential new job looks a lot less stressful than her old one. But what happens when her ex shows up missing what she did for him. Will she go back? This was a kisses only second chance at love romance with several sweet and funny moments.
