After a lifetime of predicting the future, the one thing Abby Cooper didn’t foresee was a future she couldn’t remember.
One early-spring morning, a battered and bruised woman awakens in a small-town-Idaho hospital with no clue about her identity—or her past. Deciding to call herself “Maddy,” because there’s something slightly familiar about the sound of the name, and led by her own uncanny intuitive skills, she must work with the town sheriff to find the missing puzzle pieces to unravel the mystery of who she really is. Along the way, she stumbles upon the twenty-five-year-old cold case of the sheriff’s murdered father and decides to put her “newly acquired” psychic skills to the test to help solve the crime.
While “Maddy” works to put together all the clues as to who she is and who murdered the sheriff’s father, she secretly longs for a man she cannot name or picture, but senses she once loved. Meanwhile, in upstate Montana, Dutch Rivers searches for any signs of his missing wife, Abby Cooper, who disappeared the previous fall while the pair were on vacation.
After six months of searching, the first evidence that his wife is not only alive, but also was abducted surfaces. Now Dutch is in a race against time as he and his trusted sidekick, FBI Special Agent Oscar Hernandez, search for Abby, turning over every stone and facing every gut-wrenching possibility about what’s happened to Abby in the meantime.

Fantastic! While this seems darker than others in the series (at least what Abby has to go through), I tore through this and loved every minute of the story; the darkness is balanced nicely with the Abby's trademark humor. The writing flows so well that I got caught up and didn't want to put this down; I even stayed up later than usual and paid for it at work the next day. I loved the dual POV in this one and though it broke my heart (and will stay with me for a long time), Eggy's story was perfect and I loved the reunion scene. Highly recommend the whole series but start at the beginning to see where it all began. I hope there are more to come.
Un-put-down-able. I read this in 3 hours. Abby and Dutch, their talents and bond are stretched to the very limit in this harrowing story. It's worth every shudder.
When I tell you, the last two, maybe three chapters had me pacing, stifling sobs, and full-on yelling out loud... this was truly an incredible read. For those readers who have followed Abby's story from the start, this truly was an exceptional addition to the series. It had many dark moments, touched on themes that feel ever present in today's society and also threw our hearts up, down, against the wall, and around again. I probably would have read this faster if I didn't have to tend to life and work and all that. I literally started last night after midnight, read to 43%, decided I should make better choices, then lay awake pondering what was going to happen and how Dutch & Oscar would navigate their investigation, just to pick up the book as soon as I woke up and intermittently read throughout the day when possible. I was on the edge of my seat the entire book. Laurie has such a great flow to her stories, and I was truly hooked from the first chapter. And the use of Eggy's story, incredible. Can't wait for more Abby stories down the line.
Abby was really put through the ringer on this one, and my heart went out to Dutch. You were able to tell Eggy's story. It must have torn your heart out to tell it. I literally sobbed when he jumped into Abby's arms. Still tear up even now. Glad the bad guys got what was coming to them. This book was a long time coming, so details of previous ones were not fresh in my mind. I was sure she had pins in her hip that i was surprised wasn't noted but I did catch the 10yr old gun shot injury. I don't normally think children should complete you, but in this instance I wouldn't mind one in her future. Although none of her future visions showed that. One more book to give her and Dutch that HAE with no serious trauma this time please --they deserve it. I will read this one again since I read it fast and furious in one day.
I am so surprised I was able to drag out this book. Not only do I love Victoria Laurie's writing but I realized I missed Abby. I was determined to only give myself a few pages a day and not tear into it like I was eating a box'a skittles at the movies. Ultimately as the ending approached, I gave myself more "treats" and then finally... the ending presented itself... I had no choice in the matter. Gobble Gobble scarf scarf like I never ate candy that tasted sooooo good. Crying in the bathroom so everyone in the house would leave me alone to finish the book with TONS of stuff I had rushed home from work to do. I'm proud of myself and Victoria had me riveted once again. Now to deal with the longing. Heart you V-Lar! Until I read again oxoxox
As always Victoria has given us a well written and riveting story. I began it in the evening and finished it the next morning, only stopping because I had to get some sleep.😁 However, this is a major departure from her usual Abby narratives. I may be in the minority, but I found this one sad and depressing, despite the quasi-happy ending which is why I gave it such a low rating. I have to say that I hope Victoria returns to the usual settings for her Abby books in the future.
Not gonna lie, you need a box of tissues for this one.
This book is definitely a departure from the Abby books we know and love, but Ms. Laurie handles really difficult topics with grace and care.
The characters go through A LOT in this one, and some of it is really hard to read. And honestly, these trials are really going to change how we view them in the future.
I also discovered some things about myself that I had suspected but hadn't quite put together yet.
This may be my favorite Abby yet, and I'll be anxiously awaiting the next installment.
For this emotional rollercoaster. I've missed reading about Abby and this story takes you on quite the emotional ride. I look forward to the next Abby book - this series usually leaves you looking forward just because of how great Abby's world is written. I don't want to give away spoilers but Victoria Laurie certainly pays tribute to her special pups for book 18.
Abby & Dutch are finally back, and it was worth the wait! Scary, sweet, suspenseful, and absolutely riveting. Once I read the first chapter, I had to finish the book. Victoria Laurie has another winner - but I bet she already knew that! (wink!) Highly recommend, and if you're new to this author, check out the rest of this series - the Psychic Eye mysteries - and her Ghost Hunter series. They are all excellent!
Read this book in one sitting. When I saw that there was another Abby Cooper book I immediately purchased it and started reading. Again, I was in Abby's world and like all her stories drawn into her world. Not an easy read but a very poignant one. Yes, you will need tissues to finish this book but it's worth it. I'm hoping for more Abby adventures in the future. Don't pass up this series, it truly is unique.
While I did enjoy this and didn’t want to put it down while reading, I can’t help but also feel a little disappointed. First, I didn’t like what Ms. Laurie made Abby endure leading up to her amnesia. Even though we didn’t get a ton of details (thank goodness), it was still disturbing enough to know that she had suffered through such trauma. Second, the ending felt rushed. I’m glad we got another book in the series, I just wish it hadn’t been quite so dark.
Fantastic book, kept me very engaged. It seems a lot of newer books are doing this switching of POV between chapters. It takes me a moment at the start of each chapter to catch on. I was worried about all of the disclaimers, but they were each handle very well and didn’t go into great detail. I love Abby and her pals, always enjoyable.
I’ve been a fan of Victoria Laurie for many years, starting with a series that has a character who bears my name. And I’ve loved every one of this Psychic Eye series. But this book, in particular, I couldn’t put it down! It grabbed me from the first few pages and kept me fully engaged throughout. Well done, Victoria!! I’d give it more stars if I could.
Absolutely worth the wait! Glad to get back into the world of Abby Cooper and this one hits the ground running. Make sure you have your tissues ready! Once I started reading, I couldn’t put the book down!
I love this book! It kept me on the edge of my seat right up until the end. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a great mystery. I look forward to the next Abby adventure.
As always a stellar book. Victoria Laurie is by far the best author I have ever read. Every single book is the best I have ever read & I always look forward to the next one! I just hate having to wait!! But, it is ALWAYS worth the wait.
This latest installment is one of my favorite of the eighteen books in the series so far. And I read and edit books for a living, so you can take me at my word!
I read the whole thing in a day! Several mysteries to solve with the most lovable characters. Even with some heavy topics, Victoria Laurie knows how and when to add levity and I found myself laughing throughout! Loved the way the timeline and multiple POVs unfolded and the ending was exactly what I wanted.
I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I was so excited when I came across it but the story is so very dark. I cried at the beginning and sobbed at the end and am not sure what the point of the book was. I'm hoping it sets the stage for more Abby and Dutch stories and we'll know why what happened here was necessary.
I missed Abby Cooper. I just didn’t realize how much, I could not put this book down. This book had me in a vice from the first page. I’m glad I had the day off. This was not what I was expecting to read but I absolutely loved every minute of it. This book gave me goosebumps. I laughed and I cried. I was not ready for the book to end. I look forward to many more Abby Cooper books. Why hasn’t anyone turned these books into a series?
