I feel a great kinship with Chip Zdarsky. I, too, have created terrible marketing ideas and schemes that end up costing me money.

For example, patreon. I’ve used this for a few years now, and every year I do something called merchmas. It’s a holiday where I send out themed merchandise, which is fun and also a way to apologize for always sending out the offered print newsletters late.

The problem is, I like doing stupid little projects, so the merch ends up far, far outweighing the income I make from patreon.

Maybe part of the problem is that I try to at least make things people might use. No phone case shit or keychains or whatever. No, I make things like, this year, a foldable, machine washable baseball cap, perfect for sweaty times and packing in a bag. Well, perfect in theory, if it wasn’t emblazoned with the phrase “Ask me about my favorite podcast host’s hemorrhoidectomy.”

What’s more embarrassing, having a podcast, having a hemorrhoidectomy, or having a SECOND hemorrhoidectomy within 4 months of the first?

Having a podcast is more embarrassing. Hemorrhoidectomy is more disgusting, though. Although I have learned the correct spelling of hemorrhoid, which is something to take away from the experience, I suppose.
