Cheers for a Good Life: Strong Mind. Calm Heart. Chosen Life

What does a good life look like when nobody is watching?

Not the polished version we present to the world, but the life quietly shaped by the choices we make every day: how we spend our time, who we allow into our lives, what we say yes to, what we let go of, and whether we remain true to ourselves along the way.

Most of us already know what matters. Yet it is surprisingly easy to lose sight of it.

We get caught up in busyness. We say yes when we mean no. We chase expectations that were never really ours. We become so accustomed to reacting to life that we forget we are allowed to choose it.

Not because something is terribly wrong, but because somewhere along the way, life has quietly become something we manage rather than something we consciously build.

Cheers for a Good Life is an invitation to slow down and reconsider what makes a life truly good—not through dramatic reinvention or the pursuit of perfection, but through the quiet, intentional choices that shape who we become.

Drawing from everyday stories, timeless philosophy, Stoic wisdom, Essentialism, and psychology, Kirana Sidin explores four foundations of a meaningful life:

Self-Respect • Purpose • Meaningful Relationships • Personal Growth

Together, these foundations offer a practical philosophy for building a life that is not only successful on the outside, but meaningful on the inside.

This book explores questions such as:

Are you living intentionally, or simply meeting expectations?

What truly deserves your time, attention, and energy?

Are you building a successful life—or merely a successful career?

What happens when you stop seeking approval and start living according to your values?

How do you build relationships that feel honest, healthy, and meaningful?

And perhaps most importantly: Who are you becoming through the life you’re building?

You don’t need to reinvent yourself.

You don’t need another productivity system.

You don’t need to become someone else.

You may simply need to start choosing your life again—one intentional decision at a time.

Cheers for a Good Life is for thoughtful adults who want to live with greater purpose, stronger self-respect, healthier relationships, and a quieter sense of growth.

Because a good life isn’t something we find waiting for us somewhere in the future.

It is something we build, one intentional choice at a time.

Key ideas and quotes that I want to remember:

True happiness is not a feeling in a moment. It is an overall quality of life.
Eudaimonia- deep fulfillment, meaning and purpose (Aristotle)
Boundaries are not walls, they are a declaration of what matters.
We do not react to events. We react to our judgment of them.
A good life is often boring to watch, but it is deeply soothing to live.
Clarity rarely feels like thunder. It feels like morning light.

A small update, regularly. Not a revolution. Not a complete reinstall. Just the ongoing, honest maintenance of checking in: is this still working? Is this response still mine? What’s one part of me that’s ready for a version upgrade? No one will notice immediately, but you will.

Sabr is not the absence of feeling. It is the refusal to be defined by the feeling.
Is this memory asking me to learn something, or its it just asking me to stay?

Couples who can talk about nothing are in something real. The cup is full, not with drama, but with enough.
Not because you have to, but because you are still becoming. The same experiences that make being a woman difficult are also what make us extraordinary.
Women inspire women. And that is one of the most powerful forces in the world.

Life Rule 5: Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them.

When in your life do you need a tiny pause, not to stop growing, but to grow better?

Awareness. Courage. Quiet determination. That’s all a good life actually needs.

For ambitious people, this may be the most confronting part of the book.

We are taught to optimise. Grow. Upgrade. Achieve. Accumulate experiences worth mentioning when somebody asks, “So, what have you been up to?”

Kirana proposes something almost rebellious instead:
Good can simply be good. A quiet morning. People you trust.

The book is strongest when Kirana stays inside her own experience rather than making universal psychological claims. And perhaps that is also why the book works best when it is small.

A husband making coffee. A parent watching what children absorb without being explicitly taught. A woman looking at a handbag and eventually realising that what she wanted was not the handbag at all.

Maybe that is what I liked most about Cheers for a Good Life. It doesn’t really ask us to make our lives smaller. It asks us to become more precise about what deserves to be large.

I really enjoyed how practical and relatable this book felt. It made me pause and think about some of my own choices, especially the idea of the focusing illusion and how quickly the excitement of buying something fades. The chapter on the sunk cost fallacy was another favourite, particularly the author's decision to walk out of a boring movie instead of sitting through it just because she'd already paid for the ticket. I also loved the Batman and Ross comparison!
What I took away most was the importance of awareness, courage and quiet determination. A simple, thoughtful read for anyone trying to live more intentionally.

I finished this book in just 2 days! I was captivated by the author's storytelling and reflections. It's mixed very well with the stoicism and essentialism, and this is a surprise element: pop culture! There aren't many books with a theme that can bring Gilmore Girls and TLC to the table. It's like the conversation that I didn't know I needed. I'm glad I picked this book. I feel calmer and ready to build my good life after reading it.

It's not a productivity manual or a quick-fix guide. It's more like a long, honest conversation with someone who's thought deeply about what actually matters. I found myself reading one chapter at a time and sitting with it. The sections on self respect and intentional living hit hardest. I've recommended it to a few friends already.
