The 12 Olympians #5

Ryde the Lightning

Rate this book
Siberian pack alpha Dane Durov endured a lot in his young life and managed to survive, so he always assumed that he had a special purpose in life. If he’d had to guess, though, ‘bodyguard to the child of an Olympian god’ wouldn’t have been his first guess. Frankly, he still thought it sounded like something out of a romance writer’s imagination. Romance. The mere word reminds Dane that love brings nothing but exploding pain. A man had ripped his heart out and left him hollow, but spending time with Ryder Winters is weakening Dane's defenses. The young demigod is sweet, caring, beautiful — and dangerous. Dane finds himself daring to laugh again — but love?

Ryder Winters is shocked — no, stunned beyond reason — when he finds out that Zeus is his biological father. Zeus. The god of the sky and ruler of all Olympian gods. As a demigod under constant threat, Ryder needs around-the-clock protection. He struggles to deal with his newfound superpowers, but he also battles his growing feelings for his guardian, Dane Durov. A trip to Siberia with Dane intensifies the confusion and adds lust and love to the mix for Ryder as he comes face to face with the past Dane has been trying to forget.

Things spiral out of control as Ryder's powers are unleashed and Dane struggles to come to terms with his growing love for the man he's willing to protect at any cost.

I have been blessed in this life to not only have parents that support me, but kids that do as well. I grew up in a loving but "Old School" French household. My parents worked for the airlines (TWA) so I was able to see a lot of Europe as a kid. I moved to Seattle Washington at the age of 22 and stayed there for twelve years before moving to Alaska for a little over two. Fairbanks, AK was one hell of an experience and I wouldn't hesitate to go back! I spent a little over a year in South Carolina before moving back to Arizona. I then left for Kansas for five years and now reside in Arizona. I've been connected to the military in one way or another for over half my life and wouldn't change a thing about it. Writing has become my full time job and I've never been so happy doing a job I love and being able to do it in my jammies. I plan on writing until I dry up and die. Hopefully, that won't happen soon!

I want to be done with this series. But can't seem to let it go because I invested some much time to it and it's connected to another series. I need to see it to the end.

Everything just gets repetitive.

Here are a few things I've seen repeatedly in past few books:
1. Horrible adoptive parents/ easy acceptance of bio parent(s).
2.Your guardian is your mate. Why are they fighting it? or acting surprise? It happened four times before this book.
3. Going to club and singing a song that connected to the situation. Why can't they just go to the club and not perform.
4. Mini Recaps. You have a loyal fanbase. Quit with the mini recaps of previous character lives. It is like you are watching your favorite show and then " Breaking News" pop up on your screen. It just jerks you out of the story.
5. Past significant relationship-- Turns out they are all evil and frees the MC1 up to fully commit to MC2. Markus's incident didn't make sense.
6. Everybody is attractive (I get it.), perfectly flawed and will never die.

This series feels like an after school special at times. I wanted fluffy but this one didn't hit the mark. I just can't recommend this one.

Unfortunately this one just didn't have the level of excitement and drama that I've come to expect from this series. I didn't feel any sexual tension between the MC's at all. I had really hoped for more from Ryder's story, but this just felt like it was phoned in.

First off the cover – holy hell what a cover it is!

Ryder and Dane’s story had a bit of different feel to it than a lot of the previous books in this series. There we no threats, no one was kidnapped and there were no rogues lurking in the shadows. Instead we got to see into the past lives of Ryder and Dane and the events that defined who they are today. By doing this we could see why Dane was so terrified of any sort of commitment and why he thought he could never again fall in love. We also came to realise just how big of nightmare had built up in Ryder’s mind.

As with all the demi-gods, Ryder the son of Zeus, needs a bodyguard and he comes in the form of an Alpha Werewolf. Dane Durov lost everything he thought that mattered to him at a young age when deceit within his pack left his father dead. The man he thought he was in love with, who he thought was his mate, turned his back on him and left him looking forward to spending his life alone.

When he meets young Ryder all sorts of thoughts and feelings are awakened but Dane fights hard and tries to remain unaffected. It seems fate has brought these two together and as we know fate can be fickle and usually gets what it wants.

Just as Dane decides to hand over his heart to the young god his past comes back to haunt him, but with Ryder by his side he finally begins to see things more clearly.

Sandrine has handed over two more of her boys and made sure they got their HEA. Great addition to the series and we have so much more to look forward to! Personally I cannot wait for Cezar!

This continues to a wonderful entertaining and original paranormal/sifter series that I love and can't get enough of!!! What was interesting and helpful that I noticed Sandrine did in this book to help her readers keep all the characters straight was when she brought in a different character name she made sure to let you know who and what they were so you didn't have to go back mentally and try and remember where they fit into the series. That was very helpful if not time consuming for the author but very much appreciated. ;-) Please keep the series going because I just can't get enough of this whole sifter family!!

Open Up...Let Him In

This author tells the best stories. This is exciting fun read with deceit, murder, destruction and mayhem in it. And in the middle of this read a sweet love is building. Dane has to learn to trust himself and open his heart again. The intense circumstances and situations these two go through to will have you feeling sorry for them. Their secondary family steps up to help them through some rough obstacles. As usual this author gives you a well written story to enjoy and I did. Now I'm back to waiting...

To be honest was a better book than book 4

To be honest was a better book than book 4 there was more adventures, and more storylines teading this one everything seem to start falling in place and you start understanding the characters and see how they work off each and take of each other and in some cases become one.

Another great add to the series. Oh Dane Durov and Ryder Winters, Dane is stubborn and it takes him awhile to want to open up. Ryder is trying to overcome his own fears but wants to have all or nothing with Dane. More twist and turns you have come to love. Cant wait for the next.

Seriously, I think Sandy needs some break...or I will instead...(bitter laugh)
As much as I love her characters (and that's a big problem, ‘cause Sandy knows how to make her fans fall in love with all of her characters...and made us just want more and faster), I do think her recent books completely lack of story and elements.
I have to say, the first 8 books plus book 16-18 were rich in story and they are the reason that keeping me stick with the series.
Besides those, there barely are elements...just flow along and kind of new characters' introduction.

But as I said, Sandy has the way to made me (us?) fall in love with every character she created,
so I've been following her books no matter how little the stories there is.

However, this book...it got to the worst point in my opinion.
There was nothing...really nothing.
Just Ryder and Dane flowing along the time. Completely no point.
I thought the whole book could be written reasonably in 20 pages. But it's just dragged out long to cover one book.
I could get nothing from the book.
Many of the scenes and wording were repeated again and again (and they are already repeated over and over in many of recent books).

One more point that made me think I may take a break from the series was the sign of extension to Norse gods..
I know that there are so many fans of Rick Riordan's books and that many of them may be inspired in some ways or the other.
But almost at the same period and almost the same name of Magni and [Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1] The Sword of Summer
Really ?!
I could not be convinced it was just coincident.

I loved Assassins-Shifters series so much, and still do.
But I don't like the idea of the Olympian Gods from the start ( already wrote in my former review), and now plus the Norse...I think I'm out...(laugh)
It's too much, well for me, of course.
I'll wait for only A-S series.

But! But! even with the above negative comment about Norse Gods and all, I'm really looking forward to Loki & Cezar's story (laugh).
Oh and Nate & Beau....
damn....am I really going to be able to quit Sandy's book?

I am completely addicted to this series and the assassin/shifter series by this author. She has a writing style that just draws you in and doesn't let go. The beauty of these books is the fact that you know these characters, but when they get their own book, you learn so much more. I love the backstories of these incredible characters, each one of them is completely different. I don't know how Sandrine does it, but I will read these books until she stops writing them. Every book is different and unique, yet they all go together! Ryder and Dane's book is incredible. I can't say more about how fun this series is, but once you start, you cannot stop. This book is a great read, and I look forward to reading it again and again.
Ryder Winters is the son of Zeus and a demi-god in his own right. His parents tried to drown the gay out of him and that is how he ended up being part of the group. We met him first in Summer of Awakening when he was a camper at Camp Pride. He has grown up a lot, now part of the group Barely Legal that sings at Cuffs and Stuff. He lives with some of the other demi-gods and goes to school with the rest.
Dane Durov is the Alpha of the Siberian pack that has merged with Wayne's pack. We met him w while back when Hayden and Jude were in Russia looking for a dark wolf with golden eyes. Dane had been protecting Dasan from Petey and Dane was bitten by a rogue. He was cured and brought in to guard the Olympians from the bad guys. He is closed off and standoffish when it comes to his charge, but things are changing.
We get to learn how Dane came to power at twenty and we get to know why he is so closed off to his feelings for Ryder. The backstory alone is worth buying the book. Watching Dane and Ryder dance around their feelings is quite the story, but when Cezar, the vampire/shifter, comes on to Ryder, Dane has a tough time avoiding how he feels. A trip to Siberia will open both of their eyes and things begin. Since they are fated to be together, the fates step in an show Dane what he needs to see. This love story has its ups and downs, but true love will always win out. Their fight towards love is a great story and seeing the characters I have come to love is just a great bonus. I can't wait to see where the author takes us next since the titans are always right behind them!

I am really at a loss here. This story is just so… devoid of true emotion. Mostly it’s posturing and superficialities and music video sequences. There’s just no feeling to it that I can detect.

I am not actually irritated, not even with the silliness involving gods, or silliness involving Russia, or all the rest of silliness. Just… I don’t know. Things happen; I could summarize them. But as far as impact goes, there’s just this huge blank and a lot of boredom because of it.

I know that I’ve had issues with some of the books by this author, but some I actually liked, so I know it’s not a basic incompatibility. At the same time I am beginning to think I might simply be too old (or, really, too mature) for these stories. As evidenced by some of the crap I read, I don’t need all that much, but apparently I do need a bare minimum beyond a commercial or a music video.

As has happened before, the conflict stagnates without reason and suddenly ends without reason, so that the protagonists can move on to the mushy stuff and also spend time gossiping about past and future protagonists. Where everyone sounds and behaves exactly the same, by the way.
More super mush ensues and the happiness of the couple is wallowed in (which leaves me cold since I did not see any genuine struggle to get to this point except a sudden arbitrary decision to stop stalling; nothing that warrants a reward) and we have the requisite sexual role reversal to make sure we know everything’s equal.
It’s… Let me put it this way: When Ryder is going on in his mind about how he always wanted someone who would “put him first, loved him unconditionally”, I was wondering from where he got that idea about Dane. Didn’t see much of him putting Ryder first in this story, barring the standard guardian stuff.
In other words, there is a lot of lip service by the author about how wonderful things are but I did not quite catch that.

The most mesmerizing love-hate/soul-searching/conflict-filled Olympian-mate romance yet!

What more can I add without sounding redundant or cliche? The chemistry between Dane and Ryder is volatile and scorching, building from their first meeting through each subsequent encounter. Gaza-Dion knows just how to set scenes as well as interject enough virulent, supernatural sexiness to keep the pages turning, and Dane fights a losing battle against a driving desire to be more than Ryder's guardian. Dane has to overcome his own darkest fears while helping Ryder face and get over the horror and despicable evil of his life before Caden Fournier, James Jacobs, Wayne Maccon and the other amazingly "special" men that make up the assassins, shapeshifters, and other supernatural beings behind-the-scenes or front-and-center characters of this series. Each mated pair's story is more exciting than the last, and seeing Ryder explore and hone his powers for control, power and elimination of their enemies is a new level of HOTNESS, especially for badass Dane. The story peak reveals a twist that is unexpected but satisfactorily seals Dane and Ryders future together with surprising support from an equally surprising and , surreal source. Great installment to the series that I cannot get enough of! I'm so addicted I've spent a small fortune "catching up" with THREE series - The Santornes," "Assassin Shifters" and "The 12 Olympians." Although, I am grateful for the Assassin-Shifter book sets, which saved me at least $50.00, if not more! However, Sandrine Gaza-Dion's novels and stories are worth every penny - I haven't read anything by this writer that I did not enjoy. "Ryde the Lightning" is, by far, my favorite of all three series because its poignancy and both men's tragedies made me cry; their witticisms and banter made me laugh (LOVE, LOVE NIKOLAI!!!); and they were HOT once they got.it on!

Same ole story..

Ok, I love Sandrine and always will. The story was good but it's becoming to predictable. The are all becoming the same story just told over and over. I mean let's just cut to the chase...whoever is assigned to protect you is your mate..." oh, your my protector? So that makes you my mate!!" And why is everyone of these vicious men wash women?? Oh look at you, your in love...I have never known a man gay or straight that would even bother to talk about feelings unless another came to them asking for advice. Everything and event in this book flew by with to easy resolutions as if even Sandrine is just as bored with the series but still has to finish the series and pop them out as fast as humanly possible. Maybe in the next book someone else could be the protector with the possible mate on the outside getting in the way or something like that to shake things up. They try to be alone but the bodyguard is always there...it just needs funny situations, more laughter. All of which made made Devin and Andrei's story a ten star success. I don't know, these are just ideas for Sandrine to run with.

Wow what can i say, except another great book in this brilliantly written fantastic series.
Ryder and Dane, what do you get when you cross one bad ass alpha, with a demi-god who is the son of Zeus no less! A sizzling, sexy, mind blowing, don't ever want it to end read. Their story has all the elements you could wish for in a great book, and make no mistake this is a great book which is part of an amazing series. Throw in one naturally born female werewolf (Dane's mum)who is also a bad ass, the rest of the skull blaster crew & Olympians and i mean, seriously what else could you ask for?

One of the best thinks i love about reading Sandrine's books, especially this series, is that when you read one of them,it just draws you into the story and it's just like catching up with family.

Sitting tight and waiting for the next book, and for those of you who have not yet had the pleasure of reading any of these books yet, a little heads up The Assassin/Shifter series, The 12 Olympians and The Santorno series are all linked, especially the first two, so what are you waiting for, get reading!

Unlike some other mega-series, this author continues to throw curve balls and success in adding to the greatness instead of overwhelming it. The stories may not always get better, but they don't get worse. This was one of the slightly better books with a side story in both protagonists' pasts. Each character had their own sort of past trauma and fears to overcome... and while they had each other to help them through, they also did some internal battling of their own. As always, I can't wait for the next book. I didn't read this one right away in hopes of shortening the wait for the next book. As it was, I had to reread "Strange Addiction" as a refresher before reading this, but I don't mind that (and I've done before with this series and others. As long as the quality is maintained with the increase in quantity, I would reread the entire series if need be. (In fact, I probably will do just that when the series finally ends - proof that I really love these books, lol.)

SIZZLING~SEXY~ROMANCE!!!

This series just keeps on giving. Every romance gets better and hotter. This relationship between Ryder and Dane has been a long time in the making. It is so great to finally get to know these two characters. The character development is what has me following this and the Assassin/Shifters Series. The in-depth background about Dane and meeting his Mom is what I found so fascinating in this story. Of course, seeing all the characters and catching up with their lives is icing on the cake. I loved that in this story, a new God was revealed. Can't wait to see where that all shakes out. This is just a unique and fun, very entertaining and sexy way to escape reality for a little while. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS AFFORDABLE SERIES!!!!

This book was awesome. All of the books are awesome, but the further the books develop the story the more and more I can't wait to read them. Now we have the Norse gods getting involved with the battle against the Titans as well as the Greek gods' children and even the Celtic gods are throwing their lot in with the Olympians. Although when I first read about Loki I did wonder if there was more to him than being just a warlock after having Zeus confirm it in this book I can't wait to find out what else he is. There are so many things he could end up being. I'm also happy that Dane finally ends up happy. When I first read about him all I could think was damn he seems like he might have known love and heartbreak. I'm glad I was wrong about that. With Ryder at least he could give all of his heart and have that returned.

Ryde the Lightning

I loved this book. Ryder's father is Zeus and his life was bell. His adoptive parents tried to drown him when he told them that he was gay. Dane's father was alpha of a Russian pack and was killed due to a betrayal. Dane had to fight and kill the one who killed his father. Dane became alpha of his pack. These two had a lot of issues to resolve and they did and fell very deeply in love despite everything going on around them. I can not wait for the next book in this series to be released. Erin
