Storm

Rate this book
My life has pretty much sucked. After years of getting knocked down, only to pick myself up and dust myself off, it’s time for a new beginning. Everybody says college is supposed to be this fantasyland full of hot boys, crazy bffs, and awesome parties. But what do they know? So far it’s been the same old life knocking me onto my butt. But it seems different this time.

Chase is the embodiment of hotness. With green eyes, a ripped body, and magnetizing charm, he’s everything a girl wants. And his rebellious, mysterious vibe is to die for. Little did I know he’d actually save my life.

The night we met I found myself trapped in a cold backseat against my will by a drunken stranger, seconds away from the unthinkable happening. And then Chase showed up, rescuing me.

The night we met was the absolute worst and best night of my life. It was the night Chase wrapped me in his irresistible spell. And it was the night the storm began.

This is part one of the series.

This 28,000+ word new adult romance novella ends in a cliffhanger and contains explicit language.

Brynn was a freshman at college and get life was supposed to get better. Right? She went to a party and was coaxed (read pressured) into going coke. That night was horrible and she was almost raped. If not for her rescuer. Chase was a mystery man. She felt pulled to him. He started putting up barriers and she was in turmoil. Great sexy scenes and chemistry through the roof.

Be prepared to read the next book for the rest of the story. This was a roller coaster of emotions. Glad I read it and I want to read the next.

3 1/2 stars. There were more questions than answers in this book, and as I am finding all too often authors are releasing books as multiple novellas not as a novel.

Brynn is at college and trying to do everything. At a party, she gets herself into some trouble and a stranger comes to her rescue. He’s bad boy gorgeous but she’s too embarrassed to get his number.
Turns out she won’t have to, he’s her new fitness trainer for the lacrosse team.
***
This main character is awful. This is how she is in the early stages:
OMG. This is so crazy. I can’t do this. I’ve never really done anything before. I just drank beer for the first time last month. What would this feel like? I just don’t want to die. I have to do this. I have to. I just want to fit in.(Kindle Locations 35-37).

Wait up… she’d never done lines of cocaine before this party and later she’s got baggies of it in her backpack and she’s addicted. (What???) And it is literally days later. Ah… that’s not how cocaine works. You don’t snort one line and instantly become an addict. Nor do you get to the nosebleed stage without snorting more than a few lines and for some length of time before it messes up your nose. It just doesn’t make sense and its wrong.
Plus, she constantly has drugs but never buys them. As a representation of addiction, it’s bad.
So she’s having an affair with a married professor, but she’s not talking to her roommate because the roommate had sex with some guy that was ‘hers’ and then dumped him after a week, but she was a virgin before the professor got her into bed…? Now she’s popping other pills? Of three different kinds? All that magically appeared in her bag as well.
This girl is a train wreck.
A small scar, seemingly years old, rests below his bottom lip, giving him a mystique. (Kindle Locations 318-319).

That just sounds wrong to me - I know you can have an air of mystique. Can you have ‘a mystique’?
She also assumes that she can put in an assignment that has basic spelling and syntax errors and pass because she is having sex with the lecturer. And she’s amazed when she only gets a D+. She did break up with him and when he tries to sexually harass her, she doesn’t report him.
“I’m not that type to just have random, drunken sex with strangers.” (Kindle Location 464).

Yes, you are - that’s how the book started.
She is on a school sports scholarship but she works out once (maybe twice), she doesn’t interact with her team, or train with the team, she drinks alcohol and does drugs, blows her diet constantly, skips training, skips games and holds the team bus up for an hour and then doesn’t turn up and doesn’t message them to say why. Then she gets yet another second chance and then proceeds to mess that up, too. I have ZERO sympathy for her.
She goes on and on about how hard her life is and how nothing has changed when SHE’S AT COLLEGE ON A SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP! One that included a house for her mother - but her mother didn’t take it. You have literally been given a ticket out of this life, but you are so busy whining, you don’t see it. I want to shake her.
Plus, when a guy is reading with earbuds in, she bounces up and down in front of him, keeps talking when he has made it very clear he doesn’t want to talk and then pulls his earbuds out because he’s ignoring her. Screw you, girl. If a guy did that to you, you’d be freaking about harassment.
Then he has a violent change of personality the next time she sees him and is all over her - with no explanation.
It’s almost unconscious dancing with him, swept away.(Kindle Locations 779-780)

Unconscious dancing? Ah… no.
His eyes reflect the purple lasers and strobe lights from above, but through it all I can see something in them. Like he understands. His eyes have a story. I don’t know what it is. But I’m interested to find. His eyes are inviting, warm, but cold and outline with a pain.(Kindle Locations 784-786)

What is going on with his eyes??? Which is it? They have a story? Warm? Cold? Inviting or outline(d) with pain? It’s giving me a headache imagining it, it must be worse to BE him and have eyes that are doing this, as well as reflecting lasers. Wow.
Editor? We need an editor over here. Plus I saw three mistakes in the first two pages.

The story just doesn’t make sense.

This is a journey about a college student with a trouble home life and a college life that is not something that she had no idea how to handle.

Brynn was a lacrosse team player but when she got to college she never expected college life to be the way it has turned out to be. There are secrets after secrets that she is hiding. She has no clue of how to trust anyone and who she can talk to. She had one night that she came close to something that she didn't want. That night was the start of her not liking her life.

Chase had seen a girl in trouble and went to save her. He has his own problems and has his own troubles in school. He has been able to work through them but now he has to try and help the one person that seems to be on a path of self destruction. Can he save her from herself and show her that he can be trusted and that she can talk to him.

This is a great start to what looks like a long journey. It will be exciting to see what happens between Chase and Brynn. To see what path Brynn will take.

Storm is the middle name of the main female character. She is in her first year of college and struggling with everything; school, boys, drugs and trying to keep her scholarship. She keeps making bad choices and struggling with the choices she should be making. Except for the drug use, I enjoyed the story. I especially like the male character that tries to help her out. His story I thought was actually more interesting. Since this is the first serial in a series, there is probably a lot more to come out than just the preliminary. I will reserve judgment until I read more. At this point it could go either way, the cliffhanger is understated, but with 6 more to the series, I assume a better ending than the cliffhanger implies. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

So poorly written I cannot get past 50% of the 80 page "book".

Mature content: sex, drugs, affairs, lies...
Immature characters and writing style.

Maybe this is just written for a much younger crowd because I do not relate to the content or the drama. Not to mention it is so poorly written it is hard to follow.

Spoiler
One day the heroine "Brynn" tries drugs for the first and is almost raped. The next day she is suspended from the lacrosse team, a frequent user and just ended an affair with a married professor. REALLY? It makes no sense.

Good story of a broken girl surrounded by physical abuse and drugs. Bryn sees college as her escape to be better and succeed, but her past follows her and she ends up on drugs after almost being raped. Chase is her savior who saves her from the incident and turns out to be the trainer she must work with in order to stay in school and retain her scholarship. This is part one in a series. While the story is good, it has editorial issues. On to part two!

My Hero!

Brynn, your somewhat typical college girl, goes to a party, get hooked on coke, and is almost raped. In steps her hero, Chase. He is every girls dream, but Brynn sees him as a liability, someone who knows secrets that no one else does. Can he make her see that he is only there to lend a helping hand, to he her hero, her calm after the storm.

It's a great read.... It tells you the life of Brynn how she was save from almost St getting rape by a guy she just met. Chase the guy that save her ends up helping her on her training to get back to her lacrosse them after getting herself suspended. But during all this going on Brynn has a secret that she hasn't shared. I can't wait to read the next book to find out more.

Short but involved!!

Although this was only 94 pages, it contained a very involved story about dealing with a bad childhood, domestic abuse, attempted rape, and drugs. It kept me totally hooked until I read it completely in a few hours. Cliffhanger ending so on to book 2!!!!

Good

If I took the time to review this book I liked it. I think it's bs we have to write 20 words. This is a good book though.

Is it possible for a first book to be a filler? If so, this is definitely in that category.
