This book was my introduction to Korea in 1988, and I still think it is by far the best book to highlight the Hermit Kingdom to those that are unfamiliar with the deep history and subtle complexity of the nation. The passages on the Kobukson have led to a lifelong fascination with the "Turtle Ships" and Admiral Yi Sun shin, and Dr. Yoo was instrumental in that due in no small part to his easily readable accounts of Korean history devoid of the modern political bias present in many current books.
