A huge thank you to the author for providing me with this ARC!
Tropes: dark romantasy, west asian, spicy slowburn, banter & yearning, magic college, enemies to lovers, political intrigue
The story follows historian Ilene Vezir as her quest for historical truth branding her a traitor by the ruling Sultanate. She is captured by the ruthless Captain Hakan Karaduman and forced to choose between execution or joining his secret rebellion at the cutthroat Harb Academy.
From the very first chapter, I was completely locked in. I particularly enjoy when a plot is intricate and rich in worldbuilding, and I could tell right from the start that this was going to hit all the right spots!
Ilene immediately captured my attention! She is such a fascinating, brilliant protagonist. And then came her first meeting with Hakan…😮💨
The romance is definitely a slow burn, but their instant bickering and delicious tension kept me hooked. I adored those subtle early moments before they even had a real relationship, where Hakan would casually slip up and display his protective, jealous side. It was even more incredible watching them gradually open up and reveal their vulnerabilities to each other. When they finally gave in? The wait was so, SO worth it!
As the plot thickened, I found myself utterly consumed. Just when I thought I couldn’t get more surprised, the twists proved me wrong and left me completely breathless!
