The Grey Wolves #8.5

Piercing Silence

Rate this book
It’s been six months since Jacque Lupei was imprisoned in the dark forest with her female pack mates, wondering if they would ever see their mates again. Six months since she and Fane found out that Jen and Decebel would not be the only couple adding a new pup to the pack. Six months of peace and quiet…other than Jen running her mouth incessantly about Sally getting to go on an adventure with Peri while she has to miss all the fun. When she isn’t complaining about that, she spends her time commenting on how Jacque’s butt is getting wider by the minute. Jacque doesn’t know it, but the reprieve was about to be over. She and Fane thought his demons had been dealt with, but the nightmares are back and the In-Between is once again ripping a hole inside of her mate. Jacque can’t stand to see him hurting. She can’t stand knowing that in some way she was responsible for his struggle because she, after all, was the subject of his pain from the In-Between. She’ll do anything to stop his turmoil. So she makes a desperate decision to do what she thinks her mate needs, or doesn’t need. Others will call it insane. Jen will add her own creative descriptions, including expletives thrown in for added effect. Whatever you call it, Jacque calls it an answer to the darkness that is slowly consuming her mate. She knows that if Fane has any idea of what she has planned, he would chain her to his side. So, naturally she does what any female Canis lupus would do in her shoes--she shuts down the bond and prays that no one gets in her way. She knows he might never forgive her, but then, if her plan works, he won’t even remember her name.

Hello, Readers. My name is Quinn Loftis and I am lucky enough to call myself a novelist. In 2011, I self-published my first novel, Prince of Wolves with no expectations, other than my friends and family might purchase the book out of pity. Now, several years later, with 30+ novels and counting under my belt, Prince of Wolves had been downloaded over 1 million times. Though I was hesitant at the time to submit my work to the world for their scrutiny, I'm so glad I did. It made my dream of making a living by telling stories a reality.

I'm blessed to share my household my wonderful husband of more than twenty years (who also co-writes with me on occasion), three beautiful sons, a French Bulldog, and an oversized tabby cat. I love hearing from readers, so if you have any questions about the books or my journey, don't hesitate to hit the 'Contact Quinn' in the menu above. Thank you so much for taking a chance on my books.

"It was like coming home." This was one of my favorite lines from "Piercing Silence" and as soon as I read it, I KNEW, that's how I would describe this book! Quinn has done it AGAIN! Not that I'm surprised! It has felt like so long since I've caught up with Jacque/Fane, Jen/Dec, and Costin/Sally and so when I started this book, it really did feel like coming home.

"Piercing Silence" worked on so many levels for me. It fed the romantic in me (as only Quinn can do), it made me feel sentimental (you have to read it to understand), AND it included a great plot! I think the Quinn fans out there will agree, all great attributes of Quinn's books!

I was pleasantly surprised that even though this was novella, it did NOT feel like it ended much too quickly! Quinn did such a great job of giving us a great thought out story with appropriate pacing and a Quinn ending. She's great at those! Thank you Quinn for that!

I LOVE that Quinn has continued with some of my favorite book characters of all times and we get to watch them grow more in love and now they are starting to have families. "Girl Squeal" That is such a rarity with many books I read. So many times we read about how a couple meets, falls in love and lives happily ever after but I often wonder, what happened to....... BUT with Quinn (BLESS HER), she's an author that feeds my imagination, curiosity, and romantic self by continuing to give us beautiful stories of these same characters! That may not appeal to everyone but I know those loyal to Quinn including myself and thousands others, we get it, don't we? :)

And without giving too much away but a little something to get you all excited, if you've missed some witty bantering between Jen and Peri.... then GET THIS BOOK! Peri makes a cameo and I literally laughed out loud at what those two can come up with! Let me just set the scene, Jen and Peri at a hospital needing medicine like yesterday and an unsuspecting male pharmacist . Get the picture?! It was so funny. Quinn's humor is the best!

There was such wonderful scenes in this book that you just have to get it and read! One of them I just want to briefly share about is a beautiful scene with Jacque and Fane that I related to from when I was pregnant. An emotional Jacque is not feeling very pretty with her new pregnant body. How many of us Mom's can understand this? Exactly, many of us can relate! You have to read to find out how Fane reacted. Ahhh.....sigh What a guy!

I am thankful for an author like Quinn. Thank you Quinn for giving us these amazing stories! I am so excited for you Quinn fans out there to get this book! Hurry up June 12! :) Blessings everyone! Until our next Quinn adventure......

I have read almost all of Quinn Loftis' books. Every time she releases a new book from her Grey Wolves series, I tend to drop whatever else I'm reading, and immediately begin reading her new book. I am hooked on the world she has created and have fallen in love with each of her characters.

Piercing the Silence takes place shortly after the spin-off series, Gypsy Healers, begins, so all of the events are going on simultaneously. I had been wondering what was happening with Jacqui and Jen, while Sally was off having her own adventures, and I was able to find out in this novella.

Fane has started dealing with some things that he'd thought he had moved past, and he's a little leery about allowing Jacqui to help him through it. Yes, he is a little bit stubborn. In response, Jacqui tries to shoulder everything, and in doing so learns a lesson and gains some insight.

I think that what I liked best about this novella, was that I could see growth development and the characters starting to mature a little bit (more). Don't get me wrong, they're still pretty funny and made me smile. However, I think that they (especially Jen) are learning when it's really not okay to say some things, and when to let things slide. They are also learning what it means to truly trust. We also got to see what it is that truly makes Jen an alpha. Other than being very opinionated and uninhibited, which is part of it, I didn't completely see it before. Now I think I understand.

I also liked that we still got to see a little bit of Sally and Costin, who are my favorite characters in the series. These two always make me grin like an idiot. I am really looking forward to Quinn's next book. You can bet that it will take priority over my other reads.

"It was like coming home,"

GUYS. GUYS. GUYS.

I adored this book. Seriously. SERIOUSLY. I'm not even sure how to accurately describe with words so I seem to just be repeating words.
ANYWAY, if I can stop fangirling long enough, I will try to explain my emotions in words and probably a lot of moving pictures that are known by me as gifs.
*spoilers ahead*

Jacque is pregnant, 6 months along in fact, and Fane is once again having trouble dealing with memories from the in between. Jacque wants to save him from the downward spirals of pain he seems to be caught in as of late, and tries to petition the fates to change her destiny with Fane.
And this, my goodreads friends, is when crap hits the huge, destiny run fan. BUT ITS AWESOME.

Yes, you read that right. ITS SERIOUSLY AWESOME. but other than than that....

The Romanian wolves come two years after they are supposed to and find things just a little bit different, meaning the girls all have werewolf boyfriends. Yes, Fane and Dec obviously go ballistic and challenge but COSTIN .

"Oh girl, he's good."

Costin is just as smooth and dominant as ever and I LOVE IT. You can tell he is obviously pissed beyond belief, but he keeps trying to crack jokes and its hilarious. I can't post the whole book in my review, but I'll post some of my favorite quotes:

"She has a name," Jen told him sharply.
"I'm sure she does and I imagine it's as beautiful as she is. When she's ready she can whisper it to me."

"You mean dimples?" Jen asked with a grin. "I bet he has girls falling at his feet begging him to let them lick those suckers."
Sally frowned. "You are so disturbed."

"Heck yeah!" Costin hollered. "A good brawl is just what we need. Well, what we really need is our females, but I don't think they are going to jump in our arms and let us have our way with them, so a brawl is the next best thing."

I know I'm using seriously again, but Sally and Costin will seriously be my favorite couple of all time, and PRETTY PLEASE QUINN keep writing stories about them or I will just post a review with a bunch of people crying and nobody wants that.

Thanks for writing this Quinn, and remember that you will always have a diehard grey wolves fan (*cough* Costin fan *cough*) right here :)

(but when's the next one coming out?)

As always, I love this book. It's a great filler to read in-between the others. It's a great way to jump to a new book. It gives you a little of the 'Healers' series a little of 'The Grey Wolves' series and opens up to a whole new story about Lilly and Cyphur. I can't wait to read your next book. I love your 'Grey Wolves' series and the 'Healers' series, but I'm also excited about your new 'Elfin' series book. Love ya Quinn! Keep up the good work, but make sure you get lots of rest.

Okay so when I finished Sacrifice of Love and read the A/N that my time with the 3 amigos as I like to call them was over, disappointed and saddened I was :(
Not that I did not enjoy the whole series - which I did immensely - but I was upset that one of my favourite series was at an end.
Then one fine day as I was scrolling through Goodreads I came across Piercing Silence....
PRAISE TO Quinn Loftis, I LOVE YOU!!!!! XXXXXX
Although a novella, I greatly enjoyed this new addition to the Grey Wolves series!
Now that all the fan-girling has been established lol, it is time to write a proper review...

What I thought was especially interesting and good about Piercing Silence was that one of the main issues in the last few books was brought back and addressed: Fane's inner darkness and worries concerning Jacque and now their child. I know that many of you may think that if an issue/storyline is reintroduced then that conveys a lack of originality and suggests boredom; the new story will not bring anything new to the reader.
However, this is not the case on Quinn Loftis' new novella.
Previously we have seen Fane battle his insecurities and dark thought on losing his mate and successfully banishing them. Now, he faces the birth of his first child, bringing back emotional distress and dark moods felt in the In-Between.
I really like how the author has reintroduced Fane's struggles but has given it a new twist, preventing the novella from falling into a state of unoriginality (is that even a word???). Without giving too much away, the reader is given a deeper insight into what really triggered this character's despair and how it was not completely released from the mind.
Moreover, even though put on bookshelves entitled 'werewolves', 'fantasy' and 'magic', there is a certain element of contemporary as real issues are dealt with, namely parenting and the anxieties which are tagged with such a responsible and mature role in life. That is one of the main reasons why I enjoyed Piercing Silence so much; it was able to make me think outside the fantasy world and how issues as universal as parenting and love are just that - universal and reaches the far corners of humanity.

Many of the other characters featured in this novella make a return, none more so than Jen and Decebel. Don't deny it, you gotta love a bit of 'inner Jen'...
I would have loved a bit more insight into this pair's relationship and how they are dealing with their new roles as parents to little Thia but can understand that the author is focusing more on Fane and Jacque. In saying that, Jen remains to be the loveable, fiery and hilarious heroine that I fell in love with at first word!

It is very difficult to not talk about every single detail in the novella and continue fan-girling over this world but as I do not want to spoil too much for you all, I must restrain myself lol!!:D

In essence, Quinn Loftis has done herself proud with Piercing Silence. It is not usual that I would highly praise sequels or continuing series as often I feel that more books would possibly damage the initial story and love felt by its readers. In this case, I felt that the way Jacque, Jen and Sally were left in the 7th book was a satisfying end (although I didn't want it to end - sorry, fan-girl moment). But Piercing Silence has renewed my love for the Grey Wolves series and left me wanting even more from the loveable 3. Not at one point did I feel that the story was being dragged along or old features were being used overly. Therefore, I would definitely recommended Piercing Silence and the other Grey Wolves books!

Thank you Quinn Loftisfor bringing back my girls and their gorgeous mates! <3 xxx

I love the Grey Wolf Series and have read all of these books several times. When I seen this book come out I was so excited because I missed my Grey Wolves. First you need to have read all of the books before this one so you will know what is going on. As always Quinn Loftis takes us back into the Romania where Fane, Jacqueline,Jennifer,Decebel,And a few of our favorite characters make appearances in this book. Fane is still having issues with what happened in the In Between World and is having nightmares again from this time. Of course Jennifer is always up to no good and keeping poor Decebel on his toes. They are the cutest couple ever. In this story Jacque and Fane learn some major life lessons about marriage and the importance of communication. They realize that love does help them over come their doubts and fears. There is so much that I want to say about this book but I don't want to give away anything. This is book is so Awesome.

Amazing

How did I know that I would love this book? Because any book by Quinn Loftis is a book that can not be put down once started.(I was late for work)
If you read the Grey Wolves series and was wondering how Jackie, Jen, Dane ,Dec and others have been, look no further Piercing Silence will start to get you wanting more and more There is Jen's one liners that will have you laughing so hard and wondering how she can come up with them. How Jacquie could try what she did, and then our favourite fae, Peri was there and ...you just have to read it to see that Quinn is the best in giving you a wonderful time in all her books where you can't help laughing, cheering, and even cry through them.
Now this has me wanting to reread all the books again till her next comes out....just love Quinn Loftis

This book was such a tease! Quinn, I don't know how you do it. Even though this was shorter than all the others, it didn't feel like it. You still took us on an incredible journey, taught us immeasurable life lessons, made us laugh and cry and fall even more in love with the world you have created and its characters. And now I am even more impatient for the next books.

It’s true what they say, what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. I feel those words for this story.

Both Fane and Jacque have some series inner demons they’re fighting. With the darkness building inside her thoughts and inside her mate she makes a choice that could irrevocably change their lives and the lives of every person around her.

Choices like this should not be taken so lightly. The adventure has just begun for them and as they grow together, hopefully they’ll be able to keep further darkness from eating away from them.

This is the first novella in the Grey Wolves series….also book 8.5 in the series. I have absolutely LOVED this series from the very first book. I absolutely fell in love with all the characters…Quinn did an amazing job building them up and making you love them!!

Each book is focused on a different couple, except the first 2 are both about Fane and Jacque…this novella is about them and when I found out I was so excited because they’re my favorite couple!! We haven’t had them as the main couple in quite a while and I’ve missed them!! I love Jen and Dec, along with Sally and Costin though!!

There was something in the past that happened and Fane is having a hard time getting past it, which is straining their relationship. She of course tries to fix things alone…not a smart thing for her to do…especially since the bonded mates can talk telepathically and sense each others feeling. Talk about hard to keep a secret, even though it’s possible to close the bond down to keep things secret…highly unrecommended !! Makes the men very enraged lol

“Something is wrong with Jacquelyn,” he growled, unable to hide his frustration.
“Is she hurt? Is the baby okay?” The Alpha took a step toward him, his natural instinct to protect kicking in full force.
“She’s blocking me. I can’t feel her; I only know she is alive.”

This book had my emotions all over the place. Would Jacque go through with her plan? Would Fane be able to stop her in time? If he does will be be able to forgive her for what she tried to do? Will they be okay?!

"He was barely holding it together. The sound of her voice in his mind was his undoing.
“I only wanted to take away your pain. Is that so wrong?”

If you haven’t read this series I highly recommend it!!! This series is on my top 5 list!! The males in this series are the absolute best…talk about committed and protective and possessive!!! Sometimes it drives the females crazy, but it’s so amazing how much love they have for their mates. Real men can definitely take some pointers!! Quinn has totally outdone herself!! If this series ever ends I’ll be so sad!!! I’d definitely see myself doing annual re-reads!!!

Just in the nick of time for a GWS fix. Loved to be back in the lives of our favorite feisty Texan girls and sexy overbearing mates. Ill never get tired of Jen and Jaques ride or die friendship. Specially when one of them, Jaque, goes and does something not so smart all for the sake of her Wolf-man. All in all a great short story, cant wait for the next one, cant be here soon enough.

Consumed this read! Loved it! Appreciated the novella to help with the wait between now and Quinn Loftis' next book release.

I enjoyed the short story and loved the set-up for the next one. It was an indulgence into the Grey Wolves world! Just a small snack to hold us over until the next book.

Keep on reading! Keep on reading!

When i heard Quinn was going to be writing another book following on from SOL i was so excited! I have always wanted to find out how characters find parenthood and what happens after the happily ever after. I have loved Quinn's books for years and I really didn't want to give this such a bad review, usually I love every second of these books but this just didn't work for me. I found myself looking at the percentage bar and wondering when it would end.

My biggest problem was that NOTHING HAPPENED, now normally I wouldn't have minded if it meant we got more time with our favorite characters, but when I say nothing happened I mean it. If it was just them living, I wouldn't have minded, but the storyline mentioned in the blurb (I'm trying not to give too many spoilers here so this may not make much sense) about Jaque trying to help Fane by making it like they never met just took up the whole book, so we didn't get much time with Jaque and Fane, Jen and Dec. I know that probably makes no sense but bear with me here. This plot that was keeping us away from watching Jen as a parent and such, was completly pointless. There was no suspense and it added nothing to the overall story. I feel like it could have been done so much better.

okay i give up... WARNING SOME SPOILERS AHEAD (although it's not a huge one and it won't ruin too much)

Before Jaque could make any decisions, The Great Luna interferes and shows her what will happen should she make this decision and I feel that could have been done with some more suspense. Maybe they never met at all so Fane and Decebel and who ever else go feral and the world is destroyed by Mona and the demons, perhaps Volcan finds Sally and the other healers and drains there blood and such, Vasile could have died from the poison at Mate Fest, and with no healer to save him, the Romanian pack now belongs to whatever that Serbian wolf was called.
Or maybe just like in the story, Fane, Costin and Decebel do find them to be with the Coldspring pack, but Jaque and everyone loves them so when Fane and co come and claim them, they despise them and don't mate. Just something more exciting than what did happen. (just my thoughts)

SPOILER OVER

This whole rant probably made no sense and this is just the best way I can put it into words, I just felt the whole thing was pointless and there could have been more suspense, I don't mean there had tp be any huge conflict like in previous books, I mean I liked the idea of seeing them when nothing too bad was happening and i wanted to see them develop as couples, but I just wanted more of SOMETHING than there was.

Although, by this point, anyone reading this book is a true fan of Quinn's books so I'm not saying don't read it, because I know you will, just be warned that it doesn't add anything new to the series and you could probably read the next novella in the series (because I'm sure that I read that there was a next one) without having to have read this.

I feel like this was too negative, I did love this book and I love the characters (especially Costin) and anyone who loves Quinns books will love this, I just personally don't think we saw enough of the characters we love so much and it just wasn't as good as her others. Just don't let my review put you off, this one just didn't work for me but others seem to have really enjoyed it. There were things I enjoyed in this book but I just find it easier to write about the negatives than the possitives.

Another amazing read, with an awesome storyline and plot. There is no immediate danger but a good life lesson of support and fear conquering, something so relatable it's encouraging to read about. Hearing the characters again was so nice, what they're lives are like now and the issues they overcome, along with some hints that something big is going to be happening soon, super elicited for it. This novella was much appreciated and I hope to get more someday and am looking forward to the day when the whole gang gets back together again for another adventure.

********** Contains Spoilers*********

I’ve read this book, and the rest of the Grey Wolves/Gypsy Healers Series a few times since I was first recommended Prince of Wolves on Amazon back in 2013, but I’ve never gotten around to posting a review so here goes. I enjoyed this novella, but found that there wasn’t much action unlike previous books. Still worth a read though. I did enjoy getting to see the lengths that Jacque would be willing to go to help Fane stop hurting after he starting having nightmares again, from being trapped in the in between. He was doing really well but for some reason they’ve re-surfaced again. I’m really glad that the Great Luna found Jacque before she could go through with her plan, and decided to show her the ramifications of going through with said plan. I enjoyed getting more of Jacque, Fane, Jen & Decebel. I was cracking up while reading the scene when Peri and Jen are in the hospital pharmacy because they need medicine that will help Jacque. I’m looking forward to reading the third Gypsy Healers Series book Jewel of Darkness next, and seeing how Dalton, Dillon, Peri and Lucian go on their hunt of rescuing Jewel from Volcan’s evil clutches. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.

Everything a novella should be!

I loved seeing the characters advance in their new roles in life in this novella. When you read this you get to experience love, friendship, humor, and growing up with your favourite characters. During Jen's pregnancy you didn't get insight into how a typical relationship can mature and blossom but with Jacquelyn it digs deeper on everyday experiences you might encounter. Of course, the novella wouldn't be complete without a little humor that includes Jen and a little Peri fairy (as Jen would say " We aim to please.) Oh and before I forget, this story sprinkles a little more Lilly wisdom and a update on everyone's favourite warlock king. So pick up a copy and be ready to visit the past, the present, and the "future" on this continuation of the GWS. If your like me and have read the previous novel like 10 times (and have even borrowed the sayings and one liners that the trio spout out) then you'll love this book.

This little novella is a great filler that goes along with the earlier story lines. It was not as actioned packed as others but was still a great read with all our favorite characters. I made a mistake in that I did not look at the publishing date. I read it before the next book and read about things that did not happen yet. The Gypsy healers series and the Grey Wolf series goes hand in hand. Please read in order by publishing dates.

Jacque and Fane are both having some PRSD and pre-birth jitters. Fane goes to his family and friends for help. Jacque goes to the Fates. Fane gets the help he needs. That is until Jacque puts them all in danger. Luckily the Moon Goddess herself came to Jacque to intervene with the help of Jennifer, which of course brought Decible. Don’t worry Peri got to help save the day too.

Did not finish... This series is getting ridiculously long and never-ending, I do not like that. It feels like everything is being unraveled and more twists to these poor characters are added and I just don't want to continue to read about all the ways things can go wrong. I am ending my read of this series here with this book.
