This is the first time I have read anything by Solease M. Barner. The book summary of two people from different backgrounds finding love was intriguing. Zahair is a wolf shifter and the alpha of his pack. Stephanie is a local veterinarian temporarily filling in for the regular veterinarian in town. Through a tragic event occurring on the pack's land, Zahair and Stephanie have their meet-cute. That sounds wonderfully romantic. The execution was not.
This a short novel, less than 200 pages. A quick read. I have read many novelettes over the years; some are great, some are good, and some are not good. When it's not a full novel, it has to be entertaining to keep the reader engaged and wanting more.
I struggled to get through this novel. It was 95% telling and not showing. The dialogue seemed stiff and, in some instances, incongruent with what was happening. The sentences were either fragments or run-on sentences. The emotional connection between Zahair and Stephanie seemed nonexistent to me. All of the characters seemed to be just there as filler. There was no real description of many of the characters, main or secondary, except Ron. Ron was the most fleshed-out character. He was a secondary character, as he was Stephanie's co-worker and friend. He had a true personality and was engaging. And the intimate scenes were a 1 out of 10 on spiciness for me.
Maybe if this novel were longer, so the author could have fleshed out the characters and storyline, it might have been interesting. However, at the end of the day, this novel did not meet my expectations.
This story has a lot of potential but it's written in third party and that was very annoying for me, I would have enjoyed completing the series but due to that I must decline.
