The Bone A Novel by Greg Iles (Penn Cage, Book 5) | Summary & Analysis

This is a Summary & Analysis of The Bone Tree. Greg Iles’s latest installment, presents the ongoing stories of Penn Cage and others as they pursue cop-killing fugitives, uproot police corruption, work to redress the failures of racist policing in the past and uncover the truth behind the assassination of President Kennedy. A sprawling novel, it exhaustively details some four days in the lives of its characters, bringing some close to great triumph before snatching it away from them and dragging others into the depths of despair, offering them little if any hope.

The novel continues the Penn Cage series through an ongoing investigation of police corruption, organized crime and historical conspiracy in a driving, fast-paced narrative. Effective characterization and an authentic milieu, as well as engagement with some of the most fraught parts of the history of the United States, make the novel a compelling read well worth the time spent in doing it. Paced tightly, characterized well and written euphoniously, it rewards well the reader who sticks with the task of plowing through its pages. It is clearly not the end of its narrative arcs, and so readers of the Penn Cage series will surely have more to which to look forward after reading the current installment.

Suspenseful till the very end.
Second book after Natchez Burning. Third book in trilogy is Mississippi Blood. I have loved all Greg Iles books.

Excellent companion to The Bone Tree

There are times, like when reading psychological thrillers or extensive novels with multiple story lines and characters, that the reader gets lost despite enjoying the book itself. The summary and analysis book for "The Bone Tree" by Greg Iles has been a big help in following along in the story and many of its themes. Because the story takes place around the time of Hurricane Katrina, it helps with background knowledge of the events that one can forget. The summary of "The Bone Tree" reflects on the highlights and main ideas of the chapters as well as any analytical comments they may be needed. The analysis section is really helpful, for example, it points out connections that may have otherwise been missed. If the summary and analysis is meant to be used with for a book discussion or class, there are also questions printed at the end. This companion has been very useful in understanding the most possible content in the novel "The Bone Tree".

More people are killed in this book than any other one I've ever read and the theory about Kenny's death, while very possible is not worth chasing at this point as they are all dead. For 800 pages it's basically about corrupt government (which is quite probably) and killing.

On and on and on it rambled with no real closure at the end. I suppose it's part two of a trilogy.
