Mateo:
At forty-one, the threads of my life are beginning to fray. Forced into early retirement by a career ending injury, I’m spending my days recovering in my parent’s home, lost among the memories that grounded me for so long. Memories and a life that haunt the lonely days. I’m the happy one, the funny one. What I’ve never been is the loved one. Sure, women love what I can do for them, the money, the fame, the lifestyle, but the road to love isn’t what I expected, and I was starting to think I’d never reach my destination. Until a dark haired storm cloud drifts its way into my life. The only problem? She’s my younger sister’s best friend.

Jade:
My life is complicated. But Coop and me? We have it figured out. I’ve grabbed my trauma by the horns and forced myself to be the parent I didn’t have. Dating is not on the agenda. It’s not part of the plan. In fact, I’ve all but sworn men off in general. I don't need them. I don’t have time for their games or their bullshit, and besides, I have Cooper to think about. At eight, he’s young and impressionable and too smart for his own good. Which is why Addie’s brother has me lost. Coop adores him, and although Mateo has sixteen years on me, it’s like he knows the direct route to my heart while I’m waiting for my GPS to reroute me.

Take The Detour 🦋🎨 ⚾️ ⛈️
As with all of Jess’ books, I absolutely loved it!
I love when we get a second book set years later and get a glimpse back at previous characters we loved. 🤍
Mateo + Jade
She’s his sister’s best friend. And a single mom.
He’s everything she doesn’t think she’s looking for. And isn’t about to let anything infiltrate the life she’s built for her and her son.
A well placed butterfly, a text sent, a detour taken.
This might be everything they didn’t know they desperately needed.
Be sure to pick this one up - out June 25th! And if you haven’t already read it - you have time to read Finding Charlie and get all caught up on the Hayes Family!

I absolutely love this story! Thank you to Jess Allen for sharing this with me. I fell in love with Mateo, Jade, Coop, and the Hayes family. I cried so many times at the sweetness and heartbeat in the story. I’m not sure what I was expecting with this romance based, but I am so glad that I read it!

Can we say yes? As a single mom, I fully understand Jade and her dating hesitation 100%, but can we talk about that golden retriever known as Matteo?!?! Swoon, sign me the heck up!!!

I read the entire book in a day and just laughed my way through it with the banter between Jade and Matteo and obvious care/love growing throughout the book. We love head strong baddie females who would do anything to protect themselves, their hearts and in this case, their children. And the way that Matteo’s family brought Jade and Cooper under their wing and made them their family just warmed my soul. FWB and no feelings never happen, trust me, I’ve tried. But thankfully for these characters it turned out with a happy ending.

Also, why am I just putting together the fact that Matteo is the same Matteo from Finding Charlie. Like omg I wanted that book to continue and it has and I am in love!!! Can I put in a request for Cooper next???

Detours & Booby Traps immediately hooked me and wouldn't let go. I went in excited for an age-gap, single-mom sports romance, but got an emotionally layered story about two people learning to escape the circles they’ve been stuck in.

The story follows Mateo, a forty-one-year-old former athlete forced into early retirement after a career-ending injury. Lost and lonely, he thinks he’ll never reach his destination in love—until a dark-haired storm cloud drifts into his life: his younger sister’s best friend. Jade’s life is beautifully complicated, but she and her eight-year-old son, Coop, have things figured out. Sworn off men, Jade doesn't have time for games. But Mateo has sixteen years on her and somehow knows the direct route to her heart.

Watching Jade dismantle her high walls and realize it’s okay to ask for help was incredibly rewarding. Her personal growth is a major highlight, especially as she navigates her passion for art despite being told there's no money in it. Mateo doesn't tear her walls down; he just shows her she's strong enough to climb them. He counters every excuse, looking for scholarships to help her realize she can be a mom, a student, and an artist all at once.

Then there is Coop, who absolutely stole the show. He isn't just a cute addition; he is a brilliant, highly emotionally intelligent kid. The way he sets the "booby trap" for his mom and Mateo to get them closer is pure gold. He is mature enough to understand their financial boundaries when it comes to private school offers, yet he actively advocates for his mom’s happiness.

The age gap trope was handled with incredible care and intentionality, never feeling imbalanced or predatory. The emotional maturity of both characters meets perfectly in the middle. I also highly appreciated the realistic reactions, especially when Mateo's sister, Addie, finds out about them. Her feelings of betrayal are so valid, and watching her ultimately accept that keeping them apart would only cause more hurt was beautiful.

My only minor critiques come from simply wanting more. I wished Mateo's domestic era lasted a bit longer on the page rather than just getting glimpses in the epilogue. A deeper look into Mateo's life before his injury, Jade's days when Coop was a baby, or more of her creative art process would have been amazing "nice-to-haves," but the story is still exceptionally tightly crafted.

If you’re looking for an emotional sports romance with an irresistible age gap, explosive chemistry, and a hero who falls just as hard for a little boy as he does his mother… this one belongs on your TBR.

Tropes I Loved:

* ⚾ Baseball romance
* 💙 Age gap
* 👀 Best friend’s brother
* 😒 Grumpy FMC
* 👩‍👦 Single mom
* ❤️ Friends with benefits

Mateo is 41, staring down retirement from baseball and recovering from an unexpected surgery. Used to handling everything on his own, he suddenly finds himself back home with a body that won’t cooperate and a family that’s stretched too thin to care for him.

Enter Jade—his little sister’s best friend, a fiercely independent single mom who’s 17 years younger than him. Reluctantly hired as his assistant, she’s the last person Mateo expects to become indispensable.

The real scene-stealer, though? Jade’s eight-year-old son, Cooper. Watching Mateo build a genuine friendship with him absolutely melted my heart. Their bond felt authentic, sweet, and gave the story so much emotional depth.

Then comes one of my favorite moments in the book—a drunken butt dial. Jade and Addie accidentally call Mateo while venting about men, and although he fights the urge to respond… one text changes everything.

What starts as a secret friends-with-benefits arrangement quickly turns into something much deeper. And wow… the chemistry is off the charts. The spice is intense, perfectly paced, and written with so much tension that every scene practically sizzles.

Of course, secrets don’t stay hidden forever. When Addie discovers what’s been going on, everything falls apart. Just when you think the heartbreak couldn’t get worse, Jade discovers she’s pregnant… while they’re broken up.

The emotional payoff had me completely invested from beginning to end. Mateo is protective without being overbearing, Jade is strong even when she’s struggling, and together they deliver a romance that’s equal parts steamy, heartfelt, and unforgettable.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely.

If you love older heroes, single-mom romances, found family vibes, emotional healing, and enough spice to leave your Kindle smoking, Detours & Booby Traps is one you won’t want to miss.

Now the only question is…

Can Mateo and Jade find their way back to each other for the happily ever after they both deserve? 💙📚

Some stories start with a spark, an interaction that lets you know that it’s going to be a good one. It reminds you that some detours are written into the path on purpose. When Jade meets Mateo and see’s his butterfly tattoo is that moment in this book. I had hight hopes for this book because it has some of my favorite tropes. A single‑mom, age‑gap romance with all the right things should’ve swept me up, but instead it left me feeling a little disconnected.

Mateo (41) is back home recovering from knee surgery when he crosses paths with Jade (25), his younger sister’s best friend. Jade and her eight‑year‑old son Coop have been folded into his family by his parents, and honestly, that found family warmth was the heart of the book for me. Those scenes are tender, grounding, and exactly what I wanted.

The romance leans into a black cat x golden retriever trope HARD, Jade is THE definition of black cat. They even set up a friends‑with‑benefits, no feelings arrangement that should’ve added tension and slow‑burn heat. But instead, it highlighted how uneven their connection felt. Jade’s walls, understandable given her past, often tipped into coldness that made her hard to understand. Her stubbornness didn’t always read as self‑protection; sometimes it just made her unlikable. Mateo, while sweet and patient, had moments of pushiness that didn’t blend well with her emotional availability. Their chemistry felt more told than shown, so the shift from “no feelings” to “actually, feelings” never fully made sense for me. Mateo had good intentions and Jade had a hard exterior for show, but they just didn’t make sense as a couple.

And then the third‑act breakup paired with a surprise pregnancy, these two tropes I usually enjoy when they make sense, but for this one it felt more like plot clean up. Instead of deepening the story, it pulled me out of it.

In the end, I loved the family dynamic, Coop’s presence, and Mateo’s steady warmth. But I never fully connected with Jade or the romance itself. A story that started with a butterfly and all the promise of a meaningful detour just didn’t take me where I hoped it would.

A huge thank you to Jess Allen for the early copy! There were so many moments I enjoyed and elements that I had fun reading. It’s a good age gap romance with spice and heart!

At forty-one, Mateo finds himself at a crossroads after a career-ending injury forces him into early retirement. Jessica Allen does a beautiful job exploring this stage of his life, giving readers a mature and realistic look at healing, self-worth, and finding love when you least expect it.

Mateo and Jade both feel authentic, and their connection develops in a way that feels natural and believable. And let's talk about the age gap. I am an absolute sucker for a good age-gap romance when it's done well, and Jessica Allen absolutely nailed it here. The dynamic between Jade and Mateo was one of my favorite parts of the story. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it's the emotional connection, mutual respect, and understanding that truly made me root for them. Neither character feels perfect, and that's exactly what makes them work so well together.

I also loved Jade's relationship with her son, Cooper. The challenges she's faced and the determination she shows to give him the life she never had add so much depth to her character. Watching Mateo become part of that world created some incredibly heartwarming moments throughout the story.

Filled with humor, heart, healing, and romance, Detours and Booby Traps is a beautiful reminder that life doesn't always follow the route we planned. Sometimes the unexpected detours end up leading us exactly where we're meant to be.

Huge shoutout to Jess for sending me this ARC. I cannot wait to see what you do next!

Detours & Booby Traps by Jess Allen was everything I wanted in a romance and more. As an ARC reader, I was hooked from the beginning and found myself completely invested in Mateo and Jade’s journey.

Mateo is the perfect golden retriever hero; patient, caring, supportive, and impossible not to love. Jade’s black cat energy balances him perfectly, and their chemistry jumps off the page. The age-gap dynamic was handled well, adding depth to their relationship without overshadowing the story.

I loved the single mom representation and how Mateo stepped up without trying to take over. The best friend’s brother trope added just the right amount of tension, and the found family elements made this story feel warm and comforting even during the more emotional moments.

The relationship development felt natural, the characters were easy to connect with, and the emotional payoff was absolutely worth the journey. Mateo and Jade had me smiling, swooning, and rooting for them every step of the way.

If you enjoy age-gap romances, single mom stories, best friend’s brother tropes, golden retriever/black cat pairings, and found family, this book deserves a spot on your TBR.

I was an ARC reader, and this is my honest review. ❤️📚

This book was so good! Jade and Mateo were such an amazing couple and Coop was hilarious. Jade is a young single mother who had a tough life while Mateo is a big cinnamon roll who had his baseball career ended with an ACL tear. Coop is jades son and plays a huge role in this book and I was all for it. You don’t see too often where the roles are reversed like in this book the bedroom scenes especially. Jade is a tough person to crack but she has a soft heart and thats what I loved, she knew when to live and when she needed to be tough. Mateo was just the biggest softy and would chase her till the ends of the earth. This is definitely a he falls first hard core! I absolutely loved this book. The chemistry between the two of them could be felt through my kindle! The only thing I would have liked more of is background information from both characters sides. Like about there life before each other, baseball, her past, a little recap on his family, just a little more. There is some mention of her past and sort of what happened with his ACL but not enough. Overall definitely a 5 star rating.

I could not put this book down!

Mateo and Jade had me hooked from the very first chapter. Mateo, the baseball superstar with the biggest golden retriever energy, and Jade, the fiercely independent single mom, were absolutely perfect together. Their chemistry was effortless, and every interaction had me smiling, swooning, or desperately turning pages to see what happened next.

This book packed so many of my favorite tropes into one story—single mom, sister’s best friend, he falls first, close proximity, age gap, and the ultimate golden retriever MMC paired with a black cat FMC. The dynamic between Mateo and Jade was everything I hoped it would be and more.

The writing was incredibly well done, making it easy to become completely invested in the characters and their journey. The emotional moments hit hard, the romance felt genuine, and the pacing kept me engaged the entire time.

If you love sports romance with a lovable baseball star, a strong heroine, amazing chemistry, and all the tension and heart that comes with these tropes, this one needs to be on your TBR immediately.

I enjoyed Jade and Mateo’s story so much!

Detours & Booby Traps is a small town romance with twists and turns. Jade: single mom and lowkey secret artist. She has found her people through her best friend and her world gets turned upside down when her best friend's brother enters the picture. Mateo: retired athlete recovering from an injury and falls HARD first. It's a beautiful journey of the characters finding themselves finding each other, and learning that life does not always go as you had it planned but can still be something amazing. I enjoy reading about their relationship, seeing it evolve and grow.

For me, Cooper was the star of the book! Jade’s son is so smart, quick witted, inquisitive and he just wants to see his mom happy. Seeing his relationship with his mom and then with the adults in his life adds so much to characters and shows the challenges (maybe not the right word) of being an only child with a single mom, with a limited support system. There is a lovely balance that is developed of him using his smart skills to keep them organized and of him being able to just be a kid.

ARC Review
I just finished reading Jess Allen’s “Detours and Booby-traps”, this is the first book I have read by Jess and I absolutely loved it. This tells the story of Mateo and Jade and a very adorable little 8-year-old little boy named Cooper. Jade has all but sworn off men in her mind “who needs them”, meanwhile Matteo is just trying to cope with being forced into early retirement. I couldn’t put this down I was invested in the relationship between Matteo and Jade and I wanted to see if they got their HEA. What I loved the most about this book was that Matteo had those golden retriever vibes and he and his family took Jade and more importantly Cooper under their wing. Their banter, their chemistry and the family involvement sold me I was actively rooting for this couple hoping they could be their own little family in the end. Matteo needed Cooper and Jade and they needed him, Jess wrote a wonderful story that showcased this and the beauty of a new formed family

Thank you to the author for an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

These two sucked me in big time! Mateo brings golden retriever energy to match the black cat that is Jade. She’s a single mom with a kid who is too smart for his own good. She’s found a family who knows what it’s like to need a chosen family, and it’s not only her best friend’s, but Mateo’s. I love how his family just folds them into their life like they’ve always belonged.

It’s fun to watch their relationship develop, and for their walls to come down. The spicy scenes are so hot they had me fanning myself! I love it when I find a new-to-me author that I really enjoy.

Mateo injures his knee forcing him to retire from baseball early and move home while he recovers. He meets Cooper a smart funny kid and his mom Jade who happens to be his little sisters best friend. He’s instantly smitten with them both! Jade wants nothing to do with guys understandably so since her ex was really crappy. They get thrown together a lot thanks to a scheming Cooper! They start a friends with benefits relationship with a promise of no feelings ( yeah right Mateo). Oh and it’s a secret from his sister! Obviously feelings develop and they have to work through some things. This book was really good especially if you like single mom, age gap, forbidden love, and a scheming kid!

This was an easy five-star read for me. Jade’s reluctance to date felt believable and grounded, especially as a single mother, while Matteo’s charm made him impossible not to root for. The story moves quickly, with sharp banter and strong chemistry that make their growing connection feel both fun and heartfelt. Jade stands out as a fiercely protective, well-developed heroine, and Matteo’s family adds warmth and emotional depth by embracing both Jade and Cooper. Although the friends-with-benefits setup follows a familiar path, the novel handles it with humor, heart, and a satisfying happily-ever-after.

4.5/5.0⭐️

I only put this book down when I absolutely had to. I thought it was going to be a little different by the title, but it all rounds out and makes total sense!

It was a sweet and fun read!! The found family was done so well. Mateo and Jade’s story could be considered insta-love, but it felt more like “when you know, you know”. I was blushing and kicking my feet the whole time. When MMC’s are the biggest supporters of the FMC’s dreams, I will absolutely be obsessed! Incredibly well written, and just a good time. No doubt Coop was my favourite character too!!!

This is the best kind of romance for me, one where you completely fall in love with all the characters and can’t help rooting for them to get the happily-ever-after they deserve.
Mateo is the ultimate golden retriever hero, while Jade is strong, capable, and proactive, the perfect match. Him calling her “Storm Cloud” had my heart melting every single time, and the relationship he builds with Coop was an absolute delight to read.
I also loved the family dynamics in this book and the way Mateo’s family have taken Jade under their wings.
This book was heartfelt, emotional, and packed with plenty of spice. A total 5-star read for me. I’m definitely going to enjoy reading more from this author.

Mateo + Jade

Sometimes where we end up is back home. Mateo ends up back home due to needing surgery on his knee. Back where he was living he didn't have the kid of support needed to recoup from any injury like this.

The song 'Gets Me' by Antonio Cipriano comes to mind... only because Jade can be herself around Mateo and honestly, even though she has her shield up most days he sees through it. He doesn't push.

The banter between these two is also hilarious. I couldn't stop gigglin'. Jade gave as good as she got.

I really enjoyed this book. It kind of snuck up on me much like our MCs love.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

What do you get when a girl who has grown up too fast meets her best friend's older brother who is starting over? An instant connection and a burning love story. She has always taken care of herself and he's never had someone he wanted to take care of until now. Fate conspires to put them in proximity to each other.

I loved that Mateo and Jade are nothing that the other expects to fall for but never tries to change the other and just takes the other with all their messy pieces. I loved that Mateo instantly wants to know who she is from meeting her son, Cooper. Cooper is just as much part of the story as our couple - Mateo and Cooper's relationship is hilarious and so genuine - he's a little instigator.

And don't think that Mateo recovering from ACL repair surgery will slow the spice down at all!

The third act break up was a bit dragged out for me with Jade and his sister, Addie, being so stubborn but the reunion and epilogue were worth it. I ended the book with a sigh and warm fuzzies in my chest! I would have liked to see some of their relationship when they get to love in public. I hope we get another book about this family - I hope Addie gets to find her HEA.

There's something to be said for an easy read that you don't want to end.
(We never did find out why we has that butterfly tattoo.)

Off to add Finding Charlie to my TBR! (Story of Mateo and Addie's parents)

Waffles not pancakes!!!
This such a beautiful and wholesome love story. Sisters best friend and single mom. I really could see my self in Jade. Loved her character growth, banter and personality. It was really nice seeing who Mateo grew into. Such a romantic story his love for her started before even knowing her through interactions with her son. The whole thing was such a real experience with detours and booby traps in relationships. The analogies were so fitting. Loved this one for sure. And please read Finding Charlie to read Charlie and Liam’s story!!

First, thank you to Jess Allen for the opportunity to read this book.

To taking detours… the might led to where you belong. I loved this book and could not put it down. It has well developed characters and depth, banter, a nice amount of spice.
I really wish there was one more chapter in the further in their future. I also wish we knew what the story was with the butterfly tattoo 🤔

A waffles kind of book

I really enjoyed reading this as it was the right amount of tension between the Golden Retriever MMC and Black Cat FMC. I especially liked how honest she was with him, herself, and her best friend near the end. They all deserved it. And I'm glad she finally realized he's been honest from the start, because we all need our own waffles partner.

I would have loved to see how Coop reacted to the news, but then again, I adored his character. He was so much fun.

I loved getting to read Mateo’s story!! I was so happy we got to see some of the characters from Finding Charlie as well, but truly enjoyed Mateo and Jades journey. I was rooting for them from the start and getting to see their love story unfold was so fun. I really liked Cooper as well - such a smart kid! Detours & Booby Traps is a fun, addictive read filled with banter and tension that kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. Jade and Matteo fit together so naturally, and I loved how he met her exactly where she was, never trying to change her, only support her. Cooper added the sweetest touch to their story. Jade’s strength as a mother shines through every moment, making the whole book feel like one you’d want to step into and be friends with them all.
