I have very mixed opinions on this...
The first third of the book started really strange, with massive investment in children that they are just going to send out to die. I think the story would have been much better if a) they had become life-takers of children at the required 16 year old mark or if they had only been tested in their teens. How it was handled in this story was just strange and made no sense with all the things that happen later.
The second third was genuinely good, the story was flowing nicely and the writing is enjoyable, which is also why I pushed through the first third.
In the last third, the main character started to get really annoying. This is a man with 60 years of life experience. You cannot convince me that he is as naive as he is being portrayed. An actual 16-year old? Sure. Not someone five decades older. It also really annoyed me, that no matter how many cases there were, somehow Micheal always has just enough in him to cure everyone. There is only one battle where he cannot, because he tries to heal everyone in an ongoing battle (which is a dumb idea and again, cannot convince me that an old man would try that). It also makes absolutely no sense that Michael is sent into the thick of things regardless of him being a Penitent. As was established, healers are incredibly rare and no commander worth his salt would sent such a wellspring out to be killed.
All of these inconsistencies made me incredibly frustrated in the latter half of this book and lead to me very probably not continuing the series.

Absolutely a banger. Great book, with fun characters and plenty of action. I can't wait to see where this series goes.

Rough start
Really rough start with the Mc blaming himself for being reborn as if he knowingly and willingly hijacked the body of a child not does he know that he even hijacked the body at all but I guess I liked it overall simply because he doesn’t hesitate to protect himself or his comrades.

This is a completed fantasy progression story focusing on a modern day guy from Earth who dies of cancer and is reincarnated on a fantasy world. In doing so he inadvertently takes over the body of a baby, essentially killing the conscience that was there. The people of this fantasy world can tell if newborn babies are normal or "taken". Takers are treated as scum and murderers and some kingdoms just kill them outright while others enslave or otherwise put them to work. The protagonist ends up in a kingdom where they use potions to forcibly age the bodies of takers and conscript them into forced military service. Much of the first book is about the protagonist and other takers receiving training at an academy of sorts. This world does have magic and a basic system that features titles and blessings. The protagonist acquires a healing skill while also being decent at fighting and there are some gods involved.
The progression system was very light and I didn't like it much. People didn't seem to have any choice or control over what they got in terms of titles and blessings. In later books the protagonist basically maxes out. I'm glad the story didn't go any longer than it did. Despite my problems with the progression I did enjoy the series overall. There were some touching scenes/reunions and the ending made me cry.
I read book 1 on Kindle then read the other 3 books on Royal Road since they weren't available yet.

Hooked from the First Chapter!
Wow! I read this book in two days!
If you love ‘A Solder’s Life’ by Always RollsAOne, you will love this book.
This is an Isekai Tensei (Japanese for different world reincarnation.) with a different twist.
It a bunch of people who get reincarnated to the new world on a semi regular basis, and the people of that word views the reincarnated as murderers because they ‘stole’ the life of the child whose body they reincarnated into.
This is the story of one of them as he is a criminal soldier (for being born) who forms a bond with other reincarnated penitent/ criminal soldiers.
Unlike a lot of recent Isekai books, this is well written with complex characters. I didn’t see any major continuity or editing errors. The main character has his own abilities, but isn’t overpowered, but works within a squad, who all have their own abilities.
I am looking forward to the sequel!

A great book
I was moved by reading this book. My wife has just passed,like the main character I still feel my wife near me. The characters were interesting and the society view point is understandable and harsh,but examples are described on the out come of failure with the taker who convinced a woman of a lie. The world is interesting and I look forward to October to see were this goes. In Kathy's memory I thank you for your hard work. And from my family.it makes me at easy and hoping she finds peace in her after life.

Don't know how he does it. After NotFallout and Druid Monte Cristo, this new series seems to be the (re)birth of a Paladin and you know what? It still hit all the right spots for me. It's not high litterature but it is some damn good solid entertainement. Cherry on top, based on previous series from the author i'm confident it will be decently contained and not be a 20 book never-ending story like too many authors fall into nowadays. Can't recommand enough.

Good start. The setting of book is pretty dark. The concept of isekai/reincarnation taking over people’s bodies to the degree that it is known and a primal offense is new. The MC has a cool power and is placed in some interesting situations as he navigates the setting of his new life. Good story. Interested to see what happens next.

I honestly wasn’t expecting this to be as good as it was.
I’ve liked the author’s previous works but this was a gem, I didnt stop reading from start to finish; genuinely one of my favourites.

Something different
This is the first isekai story I've read where the reborn people are treated as murderers. Whether fair or not, I, glad the protagonist didn't wallow in pity and just kind of dealt with it.
It was good to have read something different. Also good that the story isn't toned down and I enjoyed the world building.
I'm looking forward to book 2.

3.5 stars. I like the main character and his healing power makes him a great protagonist. I thought story got lost a few times, but i still found it an enjoyable read/listen. I will give the sequel a chance, but I don't' think this was as good as Armor or the Downtown Druid series (which started strong, but eventually puttered out).

I cannot stand the original conceit of this novel, namely that due to circumstances beyond the control of anyone, you should be made to be punished, and in this case, feel like you deserve it. WTF?
Otherwise, I really like the story. But the idea of righteous punishment runs through this entire story and severely rubs me the wrong way.

Pretty good first novel
This is a good first novel and surprisingly had less annoying cliche that litter the world of Amazon Kindle published Indie authors. That is a mouthful... Of course you have pseudo stats but not obnoxiously so and there are you run of the mill generic creatures and races, but overall is forgivable. I will be reading the next book in this series.

One of my favorite authors; I've enjoyed everything he's written. This story is incredible; so great I couldn't stop reading it, and I was mad to find out the next book isn't out yet, as I want to learn more about the characters and their world.

I was reluctant to start this book as I hate waiting for sequels, but I'm so happy I did.
The characters, the world building, the plot... I thoroughly enjoyed it all.
After reading many mid or worse litrpg books this was a breath of fresh air.

Awesome litrpg, unsurprising considering the author always delivers. If you like isekais that take a bit of a different journey than some, this is a good book for you. It utilizes many tropes while trying a few different things with it. I am enjoying the System, I like the MC, and the side characters are also adding to the story instead of dragging it down.
Ultimately, I enjoy it's journey into penance and the destruction some transmigrators can cause. I know many think he goes overboard with his self-inflicted penance, but I believe the story offers sufficient reasoning for this behaviour. It's not a spoiler to say he lost a son to a drunk driver, so he understands a child being lost to someone else's decisions quite well. It doesn't affect him the whole series but does mix in to the foundation of who he becomes.

interesting take on the “reborn as” genre
I enjoyed this book very much. Felt a bit like a cross between “Old man’s war” and on of the reborn as fantasy stories.

Remarkable high fantasy!

Fun story with some good worldbuilding. Later books in the series are like 10% plot, 20% annoying banter, and 70% power fantasy, but the first book is good

This was a solid book. I enjoyed the actual story and progression of the MC. He wasn't broken OP out of the gate and the healing aspect of the genre was a nice refreshing take.

I just finished this tonight and it is PHENOMENAL. I'm still a little blown away. I just enjoyed it so so much.
Definite vibes similar to A Soldier's Life and a bit of Ironbound, but the story and magic are totally different. There's not a ton of litrpg, just enough to make things interesting mixed with tons of great storytelling. I can't wait to see where this one goes. Very, very well done - Bravo C.B. Titus!
