The series draws you in right away with dark schemes, malevolent characters and plenty of intrigue.
I enjoyed the dual aspects of past and present, light and dark, the 2 realms, and following Raegan's path and Ethan's.
There is plenty of mystery and trauma, conflict and chaos, and layers of prophecy and destiny.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands to the Fae realm, the heartache and building tension, and the despicable villains.
It has themes of found family, hidden power, chosen one, and plenty of high stakes.
I enjoyed the originality, the magic system, and seeing the shift in character roles. Excited to see the next book.

This was a really good start to a series and I can’t wait to see what happens next! As far as fantasy books go this was super easy to get into as half is set in the real world which meant the world building was confusing and things were explained well. The different links and prophecies between the two sets of characters past and present were really interesting and the whole book was a nice easy read. I had a good time with this, it made me chuckle and the ending left us at a crossroads for what could happen next so it definitely leaves you wanting book 2 ASAP 🖤

I had no idea what I was getting into reading this but it ended up being such a gem of a book.
It starts intensely, throwing you into a magical world with complex politics and then another mortal world where the characters are full of immense emotional trauma. Automatically I was intrigued, especially trying to understand how these worlds would connect, as we read the stories in parallel.
And I loved the introduction of the human characters. Especially the dynamic between Rae and Ethan. They have a great level of flirty energy, whilst we also see through his PoV, that Ethan is such a yearner on the inside. And the little family of flatmates that develops is very cute.
The fae characters took me longer to warm to, as I started to understand who we could trust. (Although one character’s initial storyline was heartbreaking). And I must say, even the villains were intriguing (Don’t get me wrong, I hate them and want them to suffer, but they were rather fascinating).
And visually, the book was beautiful. The mix of the Scottish scenery, paired with the magical lands was fantastic. And overall the writing was very lush, especially with the complex internal emotions and thoughts of the characters. Tortured people seem to always have the most poetic minds!
And the book had a great ending, with twists I did not expect. I’m definitely reading book 2!!
I definitely recommend this if you like a fantasy with fae portals, emotional healing and lush prose. (The book gave me a similar energy to A Courting of Bristol Keats, in a way!)

Well… I was not expecting that.
When the Light Breaks Through is told through dual timelines, and it definitely took me a little while to understand where everything was headed. But once all the pieces started falling into place? I was left wondering how I didn’t see it coming in the first place.
The biggest thing that held this back for me was the pacing of the relationships. Both the friendships and the romance developed incredibly fast. One minute the characters are meeting, and by 10% they’re completely devoted to each other and feel like family. I wanted more time to really experience those connections growing, which would have made the emotional moments hit even harder.
I also went in expecting the magic to play a larger role from the beginning. Instead, the story leans much more into the YA/new adult emotional journey, and in hindsight, that choice fits the themes of the book. It’s about learning what it means to care for people you never expected to, and the heartbreak that comes with that.
That said, I genuinely loved the characters—especially Raegan. We love a witty FMC with enough daddy issues to keep a therapist employed. (Was I projecting? Maybe.)
The writing itself is beautiful, especially for a debut novel. There were a few moments where I felt the descriptions became a little too detailed or repetitive, but the originality of the story kept me invested.
And can we talk about that ending? I closed this book with far more questions than answers, and I need the next one immediately.
Considering this is the author’s first novel, it’s an incredibly impressive debut. I’m excited to see where this series goes next.

I haven't read a portal fantasy in a while and this one hit the spot perfectly. With a hint of romance and a whole load of secrets this was such a wonderful book to unravel.

When she moves to Inverness for university following the death of her mother Raegan sees it as a chance to start fresh in the beautiful Scottish highlands. Ethan is doing the same, escaping an abusive father moving from Cornwall to Scotland seems like the perfect solution.
When they meet in their shared flat they cannot deny the energy between them. But Ethan’s past makes it hard for him to take the risk and let someone into his heart despite his growing feelings. So when he watches Raegan vanish in front of his eyes and disappear for 3 days he spirals and lets his darkest nightmares take over. Pulled back from the brink by their other flatmates Quinn and Asher things look brighter when Raegan returns. But Raegan has been to the fae realm and she has an important role to play in the future of the world.
When Raegan chooses to go back through the portal Ethan follows her. Determined not to lose her again but forced to face his own tough truths, he is something more than just human and the darkness within him is growing.

This book was part emotional teen drama and part fae political intrigue. With a dual timeline and multiple POVs, we see the events unfold across both the fae and human realms. With scheming fae determined to cross the realms and use humans for their own nefarious purposes Raegan and Ethan find themselves at the centre of a growing storm with no way to escape.
I loved the Scottish setting! The comparison between the wilderness of the highlands and the magic of the fae forests worked really well and I loved that the realms were so similar in appearance but so different in dangers. I’m excited to see how the story unfolds as we’re left with so many unanswered questions and so many uncovered secrets!

The way N. Rae describes her characters and settings is so good and accurate that it feels like she is taking you with her through her imagination and seeing every color, every texture, every scent like you were right next to the characters, experiencing everything on your own. And honestly, I wish I was there with them... Who doesn’t love an escape to Scotland? Thinking really hard on doing a spontaneous trip to the isle of Skye like our protagonists did.
The book has multiple POVs as well as jumps in time and locations but she writes it and interconnects it so well that you will never lose or find yourself asking where are you.
You will first meet Ethan, Asher, Quinn (my favourite character) and Reagan. 4 university students ready to leave their old life behind and start a new one full of possibilities. Within themself they find a family that feels like, them meeting, was meant to be.
My favourite couple are Quinn and Asher. To all the above mentioned, you also have to add that is such a genuine, pure relationship that you don’t have any other option than to like it. No dramas, no forcing anything or masking/ignoring their feelings. A love story that everyone at some point have wish for themselves.
The fear of rejection you find in Reagan (FMC), the way she used to live in shadows, wanting to always go unnoticed but yearning for light, for closeness, for warmth and for a place for herself truly makes you wish and root for her. I couldn’t help to see a bit of myself there. Only thing I found a bit tedious was the MMC inner thoughts. Although I sympathise with his past and struggles, he definitely needs to work more in coming out of his self-destructive thoughts, he has a long way of therapy waiting for him.
Plus points for the villain of the story. I love a good villain; one that doesn’t try to change the way he is viewed, he is bad and he knows it. This villain in particular is sooooo despicable, at times I just wanted to punch him through the book. Absolutely AWFUL person but a very well written villain.

The lore of the book is built slowly. Just like the relationship between Ethan and Raegan. We discover facts gradually as the cast of characters do. And as with all brilliantly plotted books, the twists and turns are unexpected. I was constantly asking myself questions and then doubting what I believed. 🤨

This story made me feel ALL the emotions. One moment I was chucking at the dialogue between characters, the next I was on the edge of my seat, desperate to know what happens next.
Each of the characters were so well written! They were all complex and all dealing with their own hidden battles. I absolutely adored the found family and the different POVs helped me to connect with each character. I felt emotionally invested in all of their journeys.
I particularly related to the FMC. Her feelings of grief and abandonment were devastating to read, yet she also remained witty and her dry humour had me chuckling throughout the story.

A Portal Worth Falling Through
A gripping fantasy-first romantasy that slowly pulls you into its world before refusing to let you leave.

🌶️ 2/5 – Not between the main characters
When the Light Broke Through is a fantasy-first romantasy with beautiful world-building, intriguing mysteries, political intrigue and fantastic reveals. It has a slower opening, and the romance takes a back seat in this first instalment, but once the story finds its footing it becomes really compelling and lays the groundwork for what promises to be an exciting series. Unlike my other reviews, I am not going to outline the plot or conflict as I think you should go in completely blind to get the full experience.
Our main characters need intensive therapy… Raegan's struggles with grief, chronic illness and abandonment are handled with empathy, and her emotional growth throughout the novel feels believable and well earned. Ethan is a much harder character to warm to. His childhood trauma explains many of his actions and emotional barriers, but it doesn't always make his decisions easy to support. While I appreciated the complexity of his character, there were moments where his behaviour frustrated me. Even so, his emotional conflict adds another layer to the story, and I'm interested to see how his character develops in future instalments.
The romance between Raegan and Ethan is a genuine slow burn built on emotional tension, shared trauma and an undeniable magical connection. There is very little on-page romance in this first instalment, with their relationship clearly being developed across the series. Personally, by the end of the novel I wasn't entirely convinced Ethan was the best match for Raegan, which only made me more curious to see where the author takes their relationship next.
The supporting cast also deserves a mention. The side characters feel multidimensional and complex, and I really felt for Riven and Kiara. I especially enjoyed Quinn and Asher's subplot, which added warmth and heart to the story.
The realm of Liravel is beautifully realised, rich with ancient history, dangerous fae, ancient gods and political tension. The vivid descriptions make the magical realm feel alive, atmospheric and most importantly, EPIC. In contrast, the scenes set in modern-day Inverness feel intentionally ordinary, making every return to Liravel all the more exciting.
Between the multiple POVs, time jumps and gradual world-building, I initially found it difficult to connect fully with the characters, and the passage of time in the present day occasionally felt unclear. But once the story found its rhythm, I became completely invested. The multiple perspectives began to enrich the narrative, the political intrigue deepened, the reveals became increasingly satisfying, and I found myself racing through the final chapters.
The novel reaches a satisfying stopping point while leaving several major plot points unresolved, making me genuinely excited to continue the series.

I would recommend When the Light Broke Through by N. Rae Rosen to readers who enjoy a slow-burn romantasy where the fantasy takes centre stage, particularly in the first book. If you're looking for a romance-heavy story, this may not be exactly what you expect. But if you enjoy portal fantasy, political intrigue, immersive world-building and satisfying reveals set within a magical world full of mysteries to unravel, I think you'll really enjoy this one.

🌶️ 2/5 – Not between the main characters
When the Light Broke Through is a fantasy-first romantasy with beautiful world-building, intriguing mysteries, political intrigue and fantastic reveals. It has a slower opening, and the romance takes a back seat in this first instalment, but once the story finds its footing it becomes really compelling and lays the groundwork for what promises to be an exciting series. Unlike my other reviews, I am not going to outline the plot or conflict as I think you should go in completely blind to get the full experience.
Our main characters need intensive therapy… Raegan's struggles with grief, chronic illness and abandonment are handled with empathy, and her emotional growth throughout the novel feels believable and well earned. Ethan is a much harder character to warm to. His childhood trauma explains many of his actions and emotional barriers, but it doesn't always make his decisions easy to support. While I appreciated the complexity of his character, there were moments where his behaviour frustrated me. Even so, his emotional conflict adds another layer to the story, and I'm interested to see how his character develops in future instalments.
The romance between Raegan and Ethan is a genuine slow burn built on emotional tension, shared trauma and an undeniable magical connection. There is very little on-page romance in this first instalment, with their relationship clearly being developed across the series. Personally, by the end of the novel I wasn't entirely convinced Ethan was the best match for Raegan, which only made me more curious to see where the author takes their relationship next.
The supporting cast also deserves a mention. The side characters feel multidimensional and complex, and I really felt for Riven and Kiara. I especially enjoyed Quinn and Asher's subplot, which added warmth and heart to the story.
The realm of Liravel is beautifully realised, rich with ancient history, dangerous fae, ancient gods and political tension. The vivid descriptions make the magical realm feel alive, atmospheric and most importantly, EPIC. In contrast, the scenes set in modern-day Inverness feel intentionally ordinary, making every return to Liravel all the more exciting.
Between the multiple POVs, time jumps and gradual world-building, I initially found it difficult to connect fully with the characters, and the passage of time in the present day occasionally felt unclear. But once the story found its rhythm, I became completely invested. The multiple perspectives began to enrich the narrative, the political intrigue deepened, the reveals became increasingly satisfying, and I found myself racing through the final chapters.
The novel reaches a satisfying stopping point while leaving several major plot points unresolved, making me genuinely excited to continue the series.

I would recommend When the Light Broke Through by N. Rae Rosen to readers who enjoy a slow-burn romantasy where the fantasy takes centre stage, particularly in the first book. If you're looking for a romance-heavy story, this may not be exactly what you expect. But if you enjoy portal fantasy, political intrigue, immersive world-building and satisfying reveals set within a magical world full of mysteries to unravel, I think you'll really enjoy this one.

I’ve been on the hunt for something different for a while and who would have thought that Instabook Tours would provide the answer to my needs in the form of When the Light Breaks Through by N Rae Rosen…well of course I should have realised that they’d have the answer but, often the most obvious place is the last place you look.
In N Rae Rosen’s debut novel we are taken on a journey through grief alongside the FMC Raegan and her emotional relationship with Ethan…that instant connection most definitely gave a fated mate feeling. Rosen’s ability to bring out the depths and layers of their emotions, personal struggle touched me to my core, making each character relatable and keeping me engaged as I followed the storyline along the dual timelines.
Despite their instant connection, I really felt that the pace of the relationship development into romance and devotion was well managed and strong, bringing an intensity of feeling that surged through the whole book, particularly at its dark moments and the realisation that with love, eventually there is always loss.
Alongside the character and relationship development and narrative, the world building was just as beautifully captured and delivered true richness and a really well founded sense of atmosphere that captured the essence of Liravel.
I’m not sure what I was expecting from When the Light Broke Through but, I must admit that what I found was a truly emotional journey, beautiful prose and descriptions, and a well-developed plot along dual timelines that kept me engrossed from start to that end…and yes, if you read it, you’ll get exactly what I mean by that end and how I am now here waiting for the next book…patiently…not.

As someone who's called Scotland home for the last 12 years, I absolutely loved the Scottish setting. Seeing Inverness and the Highlands brought to life on the page made the story even more immersive, and I loved how the beauty of Scotland mirrored the magic of the fae world.
This book packs an emotional punch. Both Ethan and Raegan carry so much trauma, and watching them navigate everything while trying to figure out who they are had me completely invested. There were times my heart genuinely broke for them.
For the first 40–50% I honestly had no clue where the story was heading, but once everything started clicking into place... I couldn't put it down. The dual timelines and multiple POVs worked so well, and I loved watching all the little pieces slowly come together.
That last 10% though... 😳 I actually gasped. The twists were so good, especially the ones that had been hinted at throughout the book. Looking back, all the little Easter eggs were there, I just didn't realise what they were pointing to until everything unravelled.
I'm already desperate for book two because I have SO many questions that need answering.

This is the first book that has ever made me cry by page FIVE, and after that I was completely hooked.
The FMC absolutely broke my heart. Seeing how deeply her fear of rejection and abandonment shaped the way she saw herself made her feel incredibly real, and watching her slowly grow into someone who could save herself was my favourite part of the whole story.
The MMC, on the other hand… frustrated me a lot. I really felt for everything he’d been through, but there were so many moments where I just wanted to shake him and tell him to do something. Still, I think that’s what made both of them feel so human. They’re messy, flawed, and trying their best regardless of their traumas, and that kept me emotionally invested from beginning to end.
I also loved the dual setting. Starting the story in the Scottish Highlands before being transported to Liravel made the fantasy world feel much more immersive. And Liravel itself? I wanted so much more of it. The world has so much potential, the political conflict is really interesting, and the supporting characters were all memorable enough that I wanted to spend more time with them too.
The only reason this wasn’t a five-star read for me is that I wanted the world-building to go even deeper. I would’ve loved a map, and there are a few character arcs—especially the MMC’s—that I hope get explored more in the sequel. I either want to see him grow or make room for our FMC to find her Rhysand instead… IYKYK. 😌
Overall, When the Light Broke Through is an emotional fantasy full of heartbreak, flawed characters, and a magical world I can’t wait to go back to.
I’m already looking forward to spending more time in Liravel.

Wow! Please tell me theres a sequal coming?! The world Rosen created was immersive & atmospheric filled with ancient forests, powerful fae, mystical curses & mortals who had no clue they carried magic.
Our FMC Raegan is on a journey through her grief & finding herself so a lot of the emotional connection lies with that but also the story focuses on the relationship between her & Ethan who have an instant connection which actually felt a bit like fated mates. I felt both these characters were dealing with a lot of personal struggles which made them feel authentic & relatable.
I have to say I felt the dual timeline / narrative especially in the beginning chapters was a smart move by Rosen. I was immediately intrigued as to how the two parts were going to connect.
There was some really rich & atmospheric world building throughout which captured the essence of Liravel. The pacing can feel a bit slow near the beginning but the stakes rise considerably as the story continues which only raises the tension & suspense & I soon found myself speeding through the pages.
Overall a superb romantasy that blends magic, grief, destiny into a full charged adventure. Recommend for fans of ACOTAR, I think you'll appreciate this one.

One thing I’m going to write before my full review is, WOW! I enjoyed every minute reading When the Light Broke Through. The world building of Liravel is incredible. I was hooked on the world and all of the characters are staying with me.
Raegan carries unspoken pain and her transformation is phenomenal, the description of the process and how she is going through it was everything. Her character grows and steps into her own power as ancient magical blood awakens within her. What broke me, is the scene where she is seeing her mum from the Home of the Ancient Ones. As a mum myself, that moment hit incredibly close to home. I’ll admit I cried a bit.
Ethan’s childhood equally broke me. The dynamic with his sister Adira (Di-di), that sibling bond added a human layer of emotional stakes. He is fighting his inner demons and he is willing to surrender to the monster inside of him just to reach Raegan.
The Oracle and Luca’s exile was brutal. And I can’t forget Riven and Kiara, such a tragedy in their love story. What they go through and the tragic depth to the broader narrative, it broke my heart.
The writing is gorgeous, the pacing kept me turning pages and the execution was flawless. I did enjoy the non spice existence in this book. The ending left me desperate for more and definitely I can’t wait for the next book.

I usually struggle with the world building of romantasy books which keeps me from reading a lot of them but when I say N. Rae nailed it I mean it. I have family in Inverness so I was a little nervous there would be stereotypes that would make me cringe but thankfully the mix of Scottish scenery only added to the allure of Rae and Ethan’s story.
I have to commend N.Rae for her writing skills as it is very easy to get lost in potholes or just general confusion when dealing with dual timelines and multiple POVs but this was perfect!

I haven't read a portal/dual realm fantasy in a while, and this one was interesting. I loved the Inverness back drop of the mortal realm, and appreciated details and descriptions of the landscape. The story had a very interesting concept, but I was left feeling like things weren't fleshed out enough. I know this is only book one, but there were so many aspects that weren't explained or occurred and were resolved so quickly it didn't seem to feasibly make sense. Where I really struggled was with the pacing of the timeline - for me, things happened way too quickly. I actually love the villain in this story, and I think it was due to the multiple POVs. He was an awful male, but was so well written and developed. I was shocked with how quickly he was overthrown - I just don't buy into it. I can see this becoming a popular series, I am just not sure I would continue, simply based on pacing. I needed more time spent on world building, lore and true character development.

I thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of being an advance reader of this one!
I'm not someone who over-analyses books — I want a story that pulls me in, keeps me turning pages, and leaves me a bit disappointed when it ends. This did exactly that.
The biggest surprise was how much I cared about the characters. I was genuinely invested in what happened to them, both in Inverness and in Liravel, and they went in directions I wasn't expecting a few times. Always a good sign.
The balance felt right too — enough humour, enough emotion & romance, and the fantasy never got in the way of the story. It also dealt with some genuinely serious topics, but in a way that felt safe rather than heavy. This was a great fantasy book to get lost in.
The best compliment I can give: I wasn't ready to leave either world by the end. I’d be happy to spend LOADS more time with these characters, and already looking forward to where it goes next!

I'm not someone who over-analyses books — I want a story that pulls me in, keeps me turning pages, and leaves me a bit disappointed when it ends. This did exactly that.
The biggest surprise was how much I cared about the characters. I was genuinely invested in what happened to them, both in Inverness and in Liravel, and they went in directions I wasn't expecting a few times. Always a good sign.
The balance felt right too — enough humour, enough emotion & romance, and the fantasy never got in the way of the story. It also dealt with some genuinely serious topics, but in a way that felt safe rather than heavy. This was a great fantasy book to get lost in.
The best compliment I can give: I wasn't ready to leave either world by the end. I’d be happy to spend LOADS more time with these characters, and already looking forward to where it goes next!

Five stars without hesitation. I received an advanced copy from the author and ended up completely absorbed. All of the characters feel genuinely distinct, you get a real sense of who each of them is through the writing rather than just being told, which is rarer than it should be. And Ethan. Well…. If you’re looking for a heartthrob, look no further!
The dual world setup works really well, there’s one foot in Scotland (the highland setting alone is worth it) and one in a fantasy realm that feels fully realised rather than just backdrop. The balance between the two never felt jarring, but really cohesive rather.
If you loved ACOTAR, this scratches the same itch. Youve got found family, fantasy, romantic tension, etc… but the writing is tighter and the characters don’t outstay their welcome. Less repetition in the style of writing, maybe more trust in the reader. Honestly a more satisfying read.
Already looking forward to where this goes next..!!! Crossing fingers for a sequel 😃

Wow.... I loved this book so much and could not put this down! I don't know what magic was weaved within these pages?! I honestly devoured it, I want more!
The world building of Liravel was incredible and I felt so many emotions reading this and my heart broke several times for the characters and the devastation within the pages is written so perfectly, I felt it all! The characters with all their past trauma coming to the surface and finding friends along the way to deal with it. There are so many different elements to this story, with past and present, in our world and Liravel and each story and POV was told beautifully and effortlessly.
I did not see the twists coming and erm... that ending!!! I'm so glad there will be another book, I need more of Raegan, Ethan, Riven and Liravel!

I went into this book pretty much blind.
When the Light Broke Through by N. Rae Rosen is about Raegan who moves to Inverness after losing her mom, hoping for a fresh start at university. Ethan is doing the same, escaping an abusive father and leaving Cornwall behind. When they become roommates, the connection between them was instant.
I loved the duality we had, with the portal going to the Fae realm, with the Scottish setting which was beautifully described that I couldn't get enough! Ethan and Raegan carry so much trauma, and watching them navigate everything while trying to figure out who they are had me completely invested.
I definitely recommend this if you like a fantasy with fae portals.

I really enjoyed so much of When the Light Broke Through.
The worldbuilding is beautiful, from the Scottish setting to Liravel and the magic woven through it. There is a real sense of history behind both the world and its characters.
The final quarter moves through a lot of significant emotional and plot developments very quickly.I would have happily spent more time with some of those moments.
Overall, there is a lot to enjoy in this book. The characters have interesting histories, the world is imaginative and I really appreciated how much thought had gone into weaving the different characters, twists and storylines together.
A gorgeous debut with some really special ideas at its heart. I can’t wait to see what Rosen writes next.

At first, I was a bit confused about who was who in the fae realm and how the mortal world connected to it, but this became increasingly clear as the story progressed. There are exciting plot twists that kept me wanting to read more. I thought the world-building was solid, though I hope for more background information in the next installment.
And... I kept picturing Falcor the whole time I was reading about the character Veda. 😅 4 stars!

Raegan seizes the opportunity to move to The Highlands in Scotland in a hard moment for her life, where she meets Ethan, who's trying to escape his own demons. Their attraction is hard to deny, but fighting his own demons, Ethan pushes Rae away for her own good.
When Rae disappears, Ethan falls even deeper into his dark thoughts, so when she returns and lets him know that she needs to go back, Ethan goes with her.
I loved the duality we had, with the portal going to the Fae realm, with the Scottish setting which I can never get enough of. It made me think of Narnia and I loved it a lot.
I also loved how Rae and Ethan grew into their relationship, even if their attraction was undeniable from the beginning.

First and foremost I loved the Scotland setting! The highlands are so atmospheric. Second of all I loved the multiple POVs and how they unfolded with duel timelines in the human AND fae realm. Portal fantasies are so cool to me because I read them so rarely, so I when I saw that I element I was invested. Book is should be a fun journey!

This book IMMEDIATELY pulls you in and it keeps you locked there the whole time. Dual timelines, fun characters, found family and hot tension. I love how the author describes the characters and setting, It’s beautiful and colorful. I can’t wait to see where it goes next!

This was unlike any fantasy I'd read before as the human world was set in modern day which I enjoyed! I really enjoyed the dual POV and dual timelines, and how we learned about their back stories. It felt well paced and I liked the mix of fantasy and romance in the real world. I loved the friendships in the book too, and seeing those blossom
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and the characters, definitely recommend!
