This is Courtney and Mitch’s story.
Courtney is a widow and single mom, with four children, whose rural existence has taken its toll on her, leaving her fatigued and burnt-out. Mitch is a newly retired hockey player, who is looking forward to living in solitude in his mountain retreat. Mitch’s meeting with his neighbor Courtney does not get off to the best of starts, but when they are flooded he moves her and her children into his cabin.
This is a well written easy to read, slow burn story, with found family, friendships, emotions, survival, challenges, forced proximity, opposites attract, trust, romance, humour, witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining and poignant page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Kelly Shandwick hit the nail on the head with all of the pressures parents feel when having a child with special needs. It is hard to imagine the additional struggles if you lose your partner so early in life.
From the beginning, Courtney's struggles are relatable, having special needs children myself; the way Mitch comes in, is able to asses the situation and each kids worries and abilities is amazing. He is used to working with a team and the way he assesses the situations is wonderful.
I love the instant chemistry between Courtney and Mitch and the children. This book really pulled at the heart strings and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Set Her Free will pull at your heart strings from the first page to the last. It’s a slow burn that ultimately ends with a very sweet HEA. I was all in my feels the whole time. Courtney’s kiddos stole the show in the best way. The meet cute of Bobbi and Mitch had me rolling on the floor laughing. I really enjoy a well rounded realistic love story and Kelly definitely wrote that with Mitch and Courtney’s book.

Oh my what a wonderful book by Kelly!! Courtney is a single mum of 4 adorable children after being widowed and she has a new neighbour. Mitch is a retired hockey player who has an interesting meeting with the youngest and the cutest member of The Mason family. This well written book was so engaging and had me laughing out loud with the antics of the show stealer, Bobbie. I loved the dynamic between everyone as they faced the challenges of a new relationship, forced proximity, emotions and learning to accept change. I wish that I could give this book more than five stars as I enjoyed it that much. I look forward to reading more from Kelly. I received this book as an arc for my honest opinion but trust me you need to read this one, even just to experience the delightful Bobbie and her antics.

Set Her Free by Kelly Shandwick is the slow burn romance between Mitch Hannigan and Courtney Mason. It is a heart warming and emotional tale about two people who are brought together by a series of events and find they have a connection. Their unexpected meeting has brought the right person into their lives and offered them something neither knew they wanted. Mitch just happens to be in the right place at the right time for Courtney and I enjoyed following their journey. The author gives us a poignant tale of understanding, love and hope, showing that you can find happiness again after a devastating loss. I loved how all the heart felt moments where interspersed with some very entertaining incidents. Can he set her free, help her heal from the past so she can move forward with him.
Mitch has retired from playing ice hockey and bought a house in the Catskills. He is looking forward to a less hectic life in the peace and quiet of the mountains. His first morning isn’t what he expected when a funny incident starts a series of events that changes his life forever and his planned stress free retirement vanishes.
His introduction to the Mason family who live in a small wooden house at bottom of the hill is chaotic. His first interactions with Courtney are very fractious but he is intrigued by the pretty but irate woman.
Courtney has spent the last four years struggling to handle everything. She is an exhausted and grieving widow trying to raise four young children in the middle of nowhere. She’s an extremely protective mother to Tommy, twin boys Ash and Kye and sassy Bobbie. She home schools them as Kye has cerebral palsy and their safety is her top priority.
Things take an interesting twist when a snow storm arrives and then Tommy asks for his help as a burst pipe has flooded their house. Mitch feels empathy for the family and is hit by the need to help them so moves them all into his house.
Courtney is shocked by how kind he is and amazing with the kids especially Kye. She thinks Mitch is handsome but battles her feelings of grief, betrayal and guilt along with her desire for him. Could she accept his help after trying to cope alone.
He is attracted to her even though its complicated with the kids. He can’t believe he has found the person he was meant to be with after years of being single. The attraction between them slowly grows but can they take the risk and see how their relationship goes. He understands her vulnerability and goes at her pace.
The kids certainly steal the show and bring so much entertainment to the story. I couldn’t stop laughing at Bobbie’s antics and her reasons for her behaviour. I loved how she invades his personal space and has him wrapped around her fingers within minutes. She is so precocious and gives us so many funny incidents. To add to the hilarity the author gives us Eric and Duke!
I was so impressed how well he copes with the kids and treats them each as individuals. He considers them every step of the way and encourages them. His friends tease him over Courtney and how fast he has fallen as so out of character for him.
The romance develops slowly and her trust in him builds. There are times she is quick to react and gets angry with him but he explains his side of the situation and reassures her every time.
They have lots of challenges to face as they become a family. If they are to have a future together the kids need to accept his relationship with their mum.
It is a hard fought for HEA as their lives have radically changed but so rewarding at the end. A wonderful story about a man slowly reminding a woman what love feels like with his patient and kind ways.

And once again Kelly Shandwick holds your attention with her new release! A widow with 4 children, doing it hard since her husband passed suddenly in a car accident. I couldn't put this book down and read it in one sitting. I just needed to know how Courtney accepted a new man in her life and let herself love again. Being a widow is hard!! I should know...I am one!! It tears at your heartstrings and then puts you back together again....accepting that may be there is another chance at love again.
When Mitch Hannigan moves to the Catskills, his abrupt meeting with Courtney comes in the pleasure...or was it? of meeting her daughter, 5 year old Bobbie.
"I was certain I’d only fallen asleep a few minutes before I stirred to a quiet snuffling sound that I initially thought was an animal in my bed. Before I’d gathered my wits, a small claw-like scratch on my chest rapidly turned to pain. My hand flew to my chest, automatically clamping over a small, bare, satin-skinned arm. “Argh, what the fuck!” .....
Bobbie was looking for her miniature goats, Eric and Duke, but found Mitch instead.....
Their initial meeting did not go well, as Courtney came out of her home to find a very large man watching over her daughter.....and as expected fear took over, and then rage! Not great for a first meeting of your new neighbour!
This story is emotional and can be very triggering for someone who has also experienced loss, but in true Kelly Shandwick fashion, she writes this story with respect and feeling.
Bobbie certainly steals the show with her sassy comebacks that have you laughing out loud.
But with the humour, there certainly is the presence of loss and heartbreak.
And as Mitch declares Courtney his warrior, she certainly knows how to handle her children, Tommy, twins Kye and Ash and Bobby keep her on her toes as a single parent.
So begins a beautiful second chance love story for Courtney. Being a mother of 4 children, she finds it hard to accept help, but in a snow storm, with a broken pipe flooding her house, she does what she needs to do.
She sends Tommy over to fetch the new neighbour.
Mitch is there for Courtney from the get go.
I love a romance when the MMC falls first, and Mitch certainly falls for Courtney.
He knows he needs to go slow, as Courtney is still grieving her husband.
And go slow he does.
A slow burn romance is Kelly's style of writing and she does not disappoint.
How does Courtney accept Mitch and his family and friends.
Can she overcome the hurdle of moving on with her life and leaving her dead husband behind. She knows she can't live in the past, but guilt rears its ugly head whenever she is intimate with Mitch.

Courtney is a fiercely devoted mother whose strength and determination shine through every challenge she faces, making her an incredibly inspiring protagonist. When retired professional hockey player Mitch Hannigan unexpectedly enters her life after coming to her family's aid, an undeniable connection begins to form.
What I loved most about this book was the slow-burn romance between Courtney and Mitch. Courtney Mason, widow and single mum of four young children, who she home schools, is trying to cope with a farm and house which are falling apart. Her children are her priority and she's one fierce "mama bear". Her struggles are real and hope has become a dream. Mitch Hannigan has just retired from professional hockey and dreams of a peaceful retirement at this home in the Catskill Mountains. His first morning doesn't go as planned when he is rudely awakened by an unexpected guest, a precocious little girl who happens to be Courtney's daughter, which leads to an interesting meet cute between Mitch and Courtney.
A snowstorm, a flooded house, and an unexpected offer of help has Courtney, her four children and two miniature goats staying with Mitch. A disaster waiting to happen, or fate finding its way? Laughter, tears, frustration, anger, emotions experienced by every member of the household as the dynamics of all the different relationships begin to meld and form a family.

The scene stealers of this story were the chidlren, they were so sweet and adorable, typically rambunctious, and so full of life and energy.
I cannot recommend SET HER FREE highly enough, an absolute MUST READ.

Set Her Free is a beautifully emotional story which will tug at your heartstrings. Very much a character driven plot, it focuses on the slow burn, yet almost instant connection, between widow Courtney, mother of four young children, and Mitch a retired ice hockey player.
Courtney has the weight of the world on her shoulders, yet is doing a fantastic job raising her children alone until a disaster occurs which, after every other responsibility she has had to carry alone, almost breaks her. Almost but not quite.
Mitch is wonderful. The right person at the right time to enter Courtney’s life. Not afraid to point out when she’s being unreasonable in her actions and reactions, nevertheless he is steadfast, calm and unbothered by situations that would have others in a complete flap. Safe to say he becomes her rock, a literal port in a storm, when she really needs one.
This author is excellent at writing real life challenges and difficulties in a way that make them understandable and relatable, even if we have never experienced these situations for ourselves. Whilst it’s clear that Courtney and her family are suffering from grief, this story is not full of sorrow and despair. There are many lighthearted moments, humorous situations and conversations which made me laugh out loud, mostly thanks to the children. Oh and miniature goats!
Whilst there certainly is romance and chemistry between this couple, it is a slow burn and I would say this is more a women’s fiction genre, character driven, with the focus on emotional healing and growth as a family, both biological and found. A beautiful story of opening your heart, being vulnerable, trusting your instincts and choosing love over fear.

Not afraid to point out when she’s being unreasonable in her actions and reactions, nevertheless he is steadfast, calm and unbothered by situations that would have others in a complete flap. Safe to say he becomes her rock, a literal port in a storm, when she really needs one.
This author is excellent at writing real life challenges and difficulties in a way that make them understandable and relatable, even if we have never experienced these situations for ourselves. Whilst it’s clear that Courtney and her family are suffering from grief, this story is not full of sorrow and despair. There are many lighthearted moments, humorous situations and conversations which made me laugh out loud, mostly thanks to the children. Oh and miniature goats!
Whilst there certainly is romance and chemistry between this couple, it is a slow burn and I would say this is more a women’s fiction genre, character driven, with the focus on emotional healing and growth as a family, both biological and found. A beautiful story of opening your heart, being vulnerable, trusting your instincts and choosing love over fear.

I sincerely enjoyed this single mom romance read mixed with a bit of sports genre. It wasn't just the spark and banter between Mitch & Courtney but the interaction with the kids was very special to read. There was just something about this story that made me not only laugh out loud but got to me in a way I didn't want to story to end. There was also a moment in the story that was personal for me and that was just very heartwarming; you'd definitely would want a Mitch in your corner! Definitely one of my favorites this year.

Wow, you certainly get all the feels with Courtney & Mitch's story. Courtney is a single mom and widow to four children, consisting of three sons, Tommy, Ash, Kye and daughter Bobbie. Courtney has been doing it tough for the past four years since her husband's death. She's raising and is an ex-teacher, and she's been homeschooling all four children because it makes her life easier, with Kye having special needs. Mitch retires from hockey and thinks he's in for a quiet life at his home in the Catskill Mountains. Until he gets a rude awakening from Bobbie one morning, and his life is never the same again. During a bad snowstorm in the area, Courtney, who is Mitch's neighbour, sustains a water leak she is unable to stop. She sends one of the boys to Mitch's place to see if he can help. Mitch does his best, but the water and damage are too much, so he takes Courtney, her four kids, and 2 mini goats to his place until the storm passes. Mitch is very caring towards Courtney and her children and is good with the kids. Their stay at Mitch's house outlasts the storm due to the severe damage to Courtney's home. Mitch is also very caring and protective towards her children, making everyone fall in love with him.

Set Her Free ( OMG . What an emotional rollercoaster that sucks you right in from the very first page and does not let go . I started reading late last night and to say I did not get any sleep would definitely be an understatement. what to expect- ⭐️Single Mom ⭐️Slow Burn ⭐️Forced Proximity ⭐️Opposites Attract ⭐️Second Chances and so much more . I have to say , I was not prepared, not at all for how completely I was going to find myself invested in both Mitch and Courtney’s characters , and the way their story just touched my heart and at times resonated with me on so many unexpected levels. Well words cannot describe how beautiful and emotional it truly was and is . A story about love and passion , struggles , challenges and fears , trust , acceptance, heartbreak and healing , angst , humor , witty banter , family , friendships and much much more .I loved how likable and relatable Mitch and Courtney were , but more than that I loved that neither was perfect or without flaws , that they had to work to get their happy ending. Tommy, Ash, Kye and Bobbie are a credit.
Bobbie is the youngest and only girl. She is full of sass, joy and unbridled curiosity, that gets her in a lot of trouble. Her first meeting with Mitch is unique and memorable and sets the scene for an entertaining and humerus read. Full of heart, heat and family.
Mitch is a retiring ice hockey player, moving to the mountains for some peace.

Mitch and Courtney’s relationship is fast paced as they are living together Mitch is great with the kids from the start
I love the relationships Mitch develops with each of the kids I love how he understands Courtney and the reasons for her hang ups and the way he handles it all.
I love how strong Courtney is and her devotion to her children even though she must of been extremely lonely

I won’t lie. Mitch is fantastic. He dives right in, he’s present, he’s willing to be anything that Courtney and her kids need. He’s unafraid of the work, of the kids needing someone other than their mom, and of showing Courtney that she matters and deserves to find her own happiness.
Courtney, though. She’s difficult. She’s stubborn beyond a fault, quick to hide from any possible progress, even quicker to throw stones, and pretty unpleasant at times. I get it. She’s been through the wringer. But she’s also determined to keep her world small and to hinder her children due to her fears. She does finally learn to let go and live, but it’s an incredibly painful process. She almost throws it all away instead of listening and realizing what she’s done. Mitch loves her and understands her fears, though, so it does all work out.
If you want a man who doesn’t give up, even when he could, Mitch is the guy to hang with. He’s honestly the person willing and able to help this whole family heal, and I’m glad he could do it!

Another great read by Kelly Shandwick.
If you are looking for a great feel good read with fab characters and a fab storyline then this is the book for you!
When Mitch retires from ice hockey he can think of nothing better than leaving the bustling city life behind and escaping to the mountains, but he could never imagine just how much his life would change from the very first day he arrives.
Courtney is a single mum with her hands full but is doing the best job she can, but when a storm hits she has to bite the bullet and ask for help.
Love seeing how these guys come together and just how fantastic Mitch is with all the kids individually.
The stars of the book for me had to be Bobbie (closely followed by Eric & Duke) who all made me smile throughout the book.

The Mason family find Love unexpectedly
Mitch and Courtney's story is beautifully written, it's a slow burn romance with lots of twists and turns, watching Courtney, Tommy, Ash, Kye and Bobbie find safety and happiness with Mitch is emotional, they learn to flourish and thrive with his understanding and help. Courtney needs time and patience from Mitch and he has all the time in the world to give Courtney the strength and love and confidence she needs to recover from her loss.
This is a beautifully written story by Kelly Shandwick and I would recommend anyone to read this amazing story.

This one needs more than 5 stars -- one that had me totally immersed from beginning to end. One I loved how it all worked out. Everyone should have a Mitch - that man is one in a million. This is not only Mitch's and Courntney's story but her children's story too - a heart tugging but also heartwarming tale. A tale that incluces life situations, struggles, fears, trusting and acceptance, determination, connections, interactions, humor, antics, love/support/feelings, taking chances, making choices, opportunities, and emotions.
