Two of Ripley Van Raden’s favorite things are books and ghosts. Not necessarily in that particular order. Rip, as her friends call her, guides people on a haunted tour through her hometown of Devil's Moon, Kentucky.
Ripley is also a librarian by day. That’s where the books come in. Of course it’s no surprise that the library is haunted too. The ghost of the first librarian roams the stacks of Bilson Library, sending Ripley text messages and emails. That’s the only way the ghost knows how to communicate. It's a good thing Ripley has the unlimited data plan.
When a famous author comes to town for a book signing, he’s interested in seeing some of the spookier sides of Devil’s Moon. Ripley takes him to a haunted house that’s rumored to be haunted by a woman who places a curse on anyone who has the misfortune of walking through the door.
When the author turns up dead, Ripley must find out if it was the curse that killed him, or a real murderer. At least she has the help of hunky Brannon Landon, paranormal investigator and police officer.
The paranormal forces are much darker than Ripley ever imagined. Now Ripley must find the killer before she becomes a permanent resident of the Devil’s Moon Cemetery.
Rose Pressey Betancourt is a USA Today Bestselling author. She enjoys writing quirky and fun novels with a paranormal twist. The paranormal has always captured her interest. The thought of finding answers to the unexplained fascinates her.
When she's not writing quirky and fun mysteries, she loves eating cupcakes with sprinkles, reading, spending time with family, and listening to oldies from the fifties.
Rose lives in the beautiful commonwealth of Kentucky.
Such a disappointing read, especially when the first in the series was so good. Basically this book wasted a good third to half of it's length rehashing EVERYTHING from the first novel. There were repetitive words, phrases and sentences as well as quite "clunky" prose. It did improve towards the end where it romped home, if not for that it would have been worth only 1.5 stars.
I liked the first book but this one not so much. The heroine has learned nothing from the experiences in the first book - she's still acting like the ingenue in a teen slasher movie...
I tried twice to get past the initial chapters but I gave up.
I always find books by this author to be so fun and easy to read. This was no exception. I love the characters, especially the ghosts. The haunted tour and all the haunted places just add to the fun in this story. Overall a fun and easy read.
I enjoyed this read although I am sort of leaning toward 3 1/2 star. I love the whole paranormal idea, the haunted tour and all. The only thing that bothered me is Ripley is a librarian, I think if she did a little research on the house and people that lived there, it would have saved her some time. Plus when she questioned people she would let certain things slide instead of questioning more. Other than that I like the characters and paranormal aspect. The mystery kept me guessing until the end. I will continue on with this series.
Didn't like as well as the first one. The main character continually takes idiotic risks she's TSTL!Too many unlikeable characters, so will not be reading anymore of this series.
This is the second book in a series that is sure to delight readers. In this book, Rip, Tammy and Brannon must find the murderer of an author who came to town to do a signing. Along with the author came his assistant and an obsessed fan. Along the way of things that happen, Annie makes another appearance and something new is found out about Mrs. Clatterback. Who killed the author? Was it because his books were bad? Was it the obsessed fan because he didn’t pay attention to her? Maybe his assistant because she felt slighted by his fame. OR, could it have been someone else entirely? You will have to read the book to find out. I’m not going to spoil it for you. Rose is one of my favorite authors. Her books are easy to read and are always exciting with a bit of supernatural thrown in.
Rose Pressey did it again with a fun packed story of Rip and her encounters with ghosts. She takes her ghostly visits with good grace and a bit of fear which is probably the best way to approach that type of situation. The fact that Brannon is almost as good as encountering ghosts, they make a great team. It is nice not to have a love triangle going on, I know that it makes for good stories but it gets boring. Brannon and Rip have a nice slow relationship growing and the main focus is on the ghostly experiences. There is always a bit of a mystery that keeps the reader guessing and wondering all the way to the end. I love a good mystery where I do not really know who did it until it is revealed and this book certainly does that.
This was such a great mystery to read. Lots of action, love the characters, just couldn't put it down, kind of book. Love the paranormal twists in the book. Texting ghosts. Gotta love it. I highly recommend this book.
This book was alot of fun. I really enjoy trying to figure out who the killer is. Rose Pressey really has a way of making her books so much fun. loved it!!!!
This is a difficult book for me to review because I want to say I liked it but thinking back a lot of things annoyed me. Mainly the main character I did like her but she would say on thing and promptly do the opposite or do what she said she wouldn't do. She also has a lot of conversation with herself but ignores the ghost and for someone who sees and talks to ghosts she spent most of the time scarring herself. I liked the rest of the characters, especially glad to see Annie (the ghost from the library) didn't disappear from the first book. I did like the mystery and with a number of suspects it did keep you guessing and it was an interesting plot. I just wish the main character was portrayed a little differently. To encourage people back into the library, new head librarian Ripley arranges for a author to come in and sign his new book. Things don't go well when his stalker and ex wife both come and make a scene. But it is not until later and as part of Ripley's other job, as a ghost tour guide, that she really runs a foul of the author. After showing him a haunted house she is surprised when he doesn't turn up for the walk, for someone so keen only a few hours ago she is surprised he missed it. Well that's not true he did turn up, its just that somebody killed him before he could take part. Did he die because of the curse on the haunted house? Or is his killer closer to home? Like is ex wife? His stalkers? Or even his assistant? Ripley gets a creepy feeling around all three of them. But then again it could just be the higher number of sightings of the ghosts in town. Not all of them seem friendly and why does she feel pulled back to the haunted house? Can Ripley find out who killed the author? Not sure the narrator helps with the story, she is very excitable and some parts of her narration I want to shout at her to slow down and take a breath and others to she seems to take to long a breath. If she was to work on her timing I think she would he a good narrator because she does do some good voices
A famous author comes to the Library where Rip & Tammy work for a book signing. Things do not really go as planned, as several distractions occur when the author's ex-wife shows up as well as an overly obsessive fan, & the author's assistance seems to have her own set of issues.
The author decides he would like to go on Rip's Haunted Tour, though his assistant thinks its a bad idea. However, before the Tour, he asks Rip if she would take him through a particular Haunted House he'd heard of, which also happens to be one that Rip & her boyfriend Brannon are interested in investigating. Rip cannot say "No", so takes them through the house where they have a very weird encounter with a spirit. They manage to get out of the house before anything "really bad" happens. At least they hoped they did. Did a temporary possession count? When tour time arrived, the author & his assistant do not show up. So Rip begins the tour without them, only to discover his body as she leads the tour along her set route.
I love the author's story telling. She holds your interest through out the book as things keep happening, pulling you from one page to another. That said, I do get frustrated over Rip's lack of common sense by keeping things from Brannon, a police officer, that he really should be told. Things that could save her life. There are also a lot of grammatical errors from misspellings to whole words being omitted. This though, is turning into a fun series.
This is the second part of Rose Pressey's "Haunted Tour Guide" mystery series, told in first person pov by the main character Ripley "Rip" van Raden: librarian by day, haunted tour guide by night.
Ripley is excited when a famous author, Hank Key, agrees to come to the library in Devil's Moon, KY, for a book signing. The event is more exciting than she had planned, however, when both a stalkerish fan and the author's ex-wife show up and cause drama. Later, after Hank expresses interest in some of the haunted locations in Devil's Moon, Ripley takes him and his assistant, Cady, to an allegedly haunted house, which everyone believes is cursed.
When Hank is murdered after visiting the house, Ripley isn't sure if the curse is real or if Hank was killed by an actual person. Unable to resist looking into it, Rip is aided by her BFF, Tammy, and Annie, the ghost who haunts the library. Hunky police officer and paranormal investigator, Brannon, would rather Ripley stay out of it, but once a shadow figure attaches itself to her, there's no going back.
As with other books by this author, it was in need of editing. The narrative caromed here and there, and it focused mainly on Ripley's ham-handed investigation. It was mostly fluffy and light, with a bit of creepiness thrown in. The story wasn't bad; it simply wasn't good, either. Average score.
Librarian, Ripley Van Raden (Rip), finds herself surrounded by ghosts and black shadows. However, this is the first time they have literally followed her home and to work.
Is it due to Rip's visit to a reputed haunted house, where hex's were said to follow intruders? Or, is it because a noted guest author is struck down in the town's main graveyard and Rip found him with her Haunted Ghost Tour's group of the evening? Or...could it be both?
Rose Pressey writes a great murder mystery. The author imbues the mystique that surrounds all haunts. Includes a good-looking ghost hunter, adds in a spoonful of humor, and off we readers go to solve an unique mystery or two.
I love the solving of decades old mysteries combine with current cases. This series is addictive to me. I so want to meet Miss Gibson, matriarch of the Library. Since the only way for me to achieve this feat is to continue to read the further novels...off I go to download the series.
A famous author comes to town for a book signing and winds up being murdered after there was a couple distractions at the library during the signing. The author had planned on taking Ripley's haunted tour but doesn't show up. Ripley then finds his body in the cemetery. Hank's ghost does show up to Ripley trying to give her clues to his death. In addition, Ripley picks up a ghost from an old house that is purportedly haunted by a witch. Ripley, and her best friend, Tammy, search for clues while Brannon, the police officer is making his way into Ripley's life and helps her with the ghosts.
This was a fun read but I'm a bit disappointed in that there are some discrepancies and a few grammatical errors/typos throughout. It just doesn't grab and keep my interest the way Rose's Haunted Vintage series does.
I enjoyed the story enough for four stars. It moved along a little fast, though, sometimes way too fast with one paragraph being first thing in the morning and the next at the end of the day. Can be a bit confusing. I think Ms. Pressey needs a better editor and some more thorough proof-reading. There were a lot of places in the book where an extra word appeared or one was missing, bad punctuation, and horrible grammar. I'll say again that I enjoyed the story, but it did have the feel of an amateur about it.
In this cozy book 2, Ripley goes off to a very haunted house alone out of sheer stubbornness, despite being warned against it by handsome officer and ghost investigator Brannon. After, the ghostly inhabitant follows her home! Murder, stalking, and investigating ensue. More ghostly texts, ghostly warnings, and a spirit helped to rest.
Another cute, quick, and light-hearted read from Rose Pressey. I really am enjoying this series. Just enough ghost stuff to be fun without being over the top or ridiculous. Perfect for the end of a long day when all you want is a bubble bath and a book.
I have read a lot of books in this genre by a lot of authors and I have to say that oRse Pressey is up there with the best of them, probably in my top 3. This book gets better and better the more you read. At first, Ripley was a bit boring but once the dead body appeared, the book picked up immensely. The ghost in the library using a cell phone to communicate with Ripley is a genius idea. This development alone places this series above many of the others in the genre. If you like mysteries that feature ghosts, this series was tailor-made for
Small towns are becoming increasingly dangerous places to live, with ghosts and murders around every corner. I enjoyed this continuing tale. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging, with just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.
Another light read. Overall I like the characters and the idea behind the plot. But the main character still constantly chooses to withhold important information about a murder from the police and also continually makes poor decisions that put her in danger or are basically illegal. If you can overlook that it is fun and enjoyable if you are looking for an easy read.
I am sorry to say that I did not like this book even though I like the paranormal aspect. The story was very choppy and just did not flow. I know this was totally fiction but I like some sense of reality or normalcy to enjoy a story. I won't be reading any more in this series.
I think this book is great. That is why I gave it 5 stars. This is only the second book of this series that I have read. I love this series. I like the fact that though I'm reading these books out of sequence it just takes a minute to see. where it picks up no matter which one you read. keep upon the great writing. 😊
This is just the kind of book you want to read this time of year here in Texas. The air is getting cooler and its nice to open all the windows wrap up in a blanket and snuggle down for a good fun read. I love the characters in Rose's books and this book is no exception Rip is just wonderful. I received an advanced copy of this book. This review is my own opinion.
But I have to say Rip sure doesn't listen too well, when her cop boyfriend Brannon tells her stay safe and not get involved with whatever crime they are working on. Then again I don't know of what woman does listen, I know I didn't. I do recommend this cozy series.
I enjoyed the first one. thought I found a series I'd read to the last book. This will be my last one. Now she comes across hair-brained and for someone who is seeing a police officer, she sure does like to breaks a lot of laws. I just wanted a fun little cozy series. But she's supposed to be an educated person, so why break the law ?
I was a little disappointed in this book. I like RIP, the lead character, very much, but this book felt like it was rushed to publication without proper proofing. I hope the next in the series is closer to the first.
I love the characters, so fun. Ripley is a little bit serious but hey, she sees ghosts! Brannon is a cop who wants to be a ghost buster, so cool. Annie is a ghost who walks the halls of the library. For an old ghost, she is super nice, to Ripley. To others, they may get hit in the head with a book. Throw in a good murder mystery and what is not to love!
