This is a short biography that instead of giving you lots of dates gives you a look at Beethoven's emotional life. Which fills this small book with big things to talk about with your child. Things such as an abusive, alcoholic father and a mother that doesn't stand up for him; troubled relationships with his nephew and with his own fame; the loss of his hearing; and suicidal thoughts. This isn't a light read, there are difficult topics within. If you and your child are ready to talk about these, I think this is an excellent book to add to your composer studies, if not, this book will likely make you uncomfortable. There are also many excellent pictures, from photos of places Beethoven lived to paintings of him himself.

Please don't give my two-star rating too much merit because I read this when I was in 6th grade so I could barely remember how I rated the book, or weather I ever did. I do remember being equally fascinated by his music and life. My very sweet Language Arts teacher was hesitant to let the library lend me the book. She wanted me to go thru the shelves and try find another one. Despite my covert feelings of disappointment, I was still obedient and browsed the books, while I kept this vivid picture in my head where I lay my tummy on my bed, discovering Beethoven's life under my blanket and fainting flashlight.

Oooops, I completely forgot about the supposed gist that goes on this textbox. Anywho, read it!

Then go watch, "My Immortal Beloved", which relives Beethoven's early life to his fame and deafness and peak and of course erotic/love affairs in between all those and...a conspiracy?
