I feel that Timekeeper Rising is worth 4.5 stars.. I don't want to just give it 4 stars because I feel it is worth more.
I received a copy of the book from the author for an honest review...
Timekeeper Rising is a well developed paranormal dystopian. I loved the twist with the good vs. evil. The people prayed for someone to save them after the Earth was destroyed, and were sent the Shunned. The Shunned are fallen angels that rule everyone's life by time.
Iris knows that she is different. She has different abilities that show her visions and many of them are her own death. One night after she realizes that her best friend had either been taken by the Shunned or died because his time ran out, Iris realizes that she is also marked for death. She doesn't know exactly why.
Sage is sent down to Earth to kill Iris, but he realizes there is something in her that makes her special. He is torn between his duty and her.
Timekeeper Rising has a great cover. It is very simple and captures the book. The characters are well developed. Iris does have some immature moments, but that is due to be 16. I enjoy the plot of Timekeeper Rising. It is not the typical dystopian story.
I am looking forward to the next book and I am glad that I had the opportunity read this story.

I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Timekeeper Rising is book 1 of a 2 book series by Allyssa Painter and is a well written, easy to read story of good versus evil involving angels and demons, and people with telepathic abilities, visions of the future, seeing auras, and people who possess other interesting mysterious powers.

The main protagonist is Iris, a 16 year old girl who knows she is different to everyone else. She is on the verge of rebelling against her family and leaving when she meets Sage, a young boy sent to murder her because of a prophecy which says she will help destroy the world. But when they meet face to face, Sage changes his mind and instead decides to help Iris find her best friend and her older brother who have been taken by the Shunned, a group of merciless and callous fallen angels who rule her world according to time clocks. Through Sage, Iris discovers she is the next Timekeeper and has powers that will come into full effect on her 17th birthday and she needs to learn about these powers and develop them in order to fight a war against the Shunned to save the world.

I really liked the character of Iris, she is a great heroine for the story. Iris is fiercely protective of her loved ones, she is determined, strong, clever, and not afraid to get in there and fight for herself and those she cares for. It was great to see her grow during the story and watch her mature in her perception of other people and to see her change her attitude towards Sage over the course of the story.

Sage was another great character. He also grows throughout the story and becomes highly protective of Iris and is eager to train her in combat fighting as well as in the use of her powers. Sage has had his ordered, black and white world changed to a thousand shades of grey (to paraphrase the book) because of meeting Iris. However, not far underneath the surface, is the knowledge that Sage originally was sent to murder Iris, and now he is helping her. I wonder if Sage will continue to help her and suffer the consequences of his actions from his father for not carrying out his order to kill her, or whether he will eventually succumb to his father’s demands. I will be interested to see how this plays out in the next book.

Both Sage and Iris dislike each other but feel a pull to one another at the same time and this causes much frustration and confusion for the two of them. It makes it difficult for them to constantly work together, but they need to start trusting each other so they can successfully fight the Shunned when the war comes. There is very little in the way of romance in this book, but by the end there is a hint that something may come out of Iris and Sage’s relationship in the next book.
The story ends on Iris’s 17th birthday, when her powers come into full effect and she is no longer able to hide the fact she is the next Timekeeper and those looking for her to either kill her or recruit her to their side of the coming war, will be able to find her now because her powers can no longer be hidden. In the final chapter of the book, a battle scene has just commenced when Iris has a surprise encounter with someone from her past. Thankfully, the sequel to this book will be out in December so it won’t be too long to wait to find out what happens next!

I really enjoyed reading Timekeeper Rising. It is an intriguing storyline which will hook you in from the very beginning and keep you enthralled until the astonishing end. I especially liked the idea of the clocks ticking away people’s lives (which was quite a frightening thought really – I’ll never be able to look at a clock the same way again!), and also what happens when the Shunned steal someone away from their home (another scary thought). I highly recommend this book if you like reading books about good and evil, angels, demons, and the paranormal.

I was so glad to have picked up this book at The Dayton Book Expo. The blurb was great, and it's such a unique take on Angels and Demons. The first chapter was a lot of information to take in, but as soon as the plot is propelled forward in the second chapter, I knew it wouldn't take me long to read. Our protagonist, Iris, knowing she is doomed to die her entire life, is joined by a group of friends that help her learn more her past and powers, and also teach her about the many kinds of love and trust she can place in them. And twists? YES. Painter has an innate talent for writing. I enjoyed every little twist along the way. I can't wait to get to book 2!

Timekeeper Rising sucked me in from page one and kept me reading wayyyyy past my bedtime, which rarely happens. I value my sleep with the same vigor as I value air and coffee.

This book was so creepy and awesome. It reminded me a bit of an M. Night Shymalan movie, kind of like The Village. Iris and Sage are travelling through the woods, trying to remain hidden from The Shunned. The whole time I was reading, I was on edge, waiting for something to jump out. And those somethings did...quite often.
description

Every time The Shunned wanted to take someone, all of the lights would go out in all of the homes, and when they came back on, the home where someone was taken would remain black. Think about that for a second. You have no idea when it's going to happen and if someone you know, or YOU, will be taken.

Iris was a very strong character. Ever since she was a little girl, she's had visions of the future, specifically of her own death. She's accepted it and because she has known for so long, she no longer fears death. Her only concern is to protect those she loves. Her brother, Zander, was taken and at the opening of the book, her best friend, Danny, is taken. She believes that The Shunned took them to draw her out, because she is the Timekeeper. She is wracked with guilt and will stop at nothing to rescue them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I devoured it. I couldn't put it down. It was unlike anything I'd ever read. Yes, it's an angels and demons dystopian, but the focus isn't on them. The focus is on Iris and Sage's struggle to work together. The book ended on a cliffhanger and I can not wait to get my hands on the sequel.

This is a great beginning to a debut series. This is a classic good vs. evil YA dystopian series. Have to say it's for a sure wicked world and when people wanted hope they got the Shunned. Which of course are fallen angels.

The character development is there and hopefully goes more in depth in the next installment. Irish is the leading character who is a great one. Knowing she is different. Sage hasn't quite grown on me yet so we'll see if the next one he does. I do love the interactions between the two though. The story line is pretty straight forward so I say easily 15 and up can enjoy this story.

I do have to mention how I love the cover. Even though it's basic it fits it perfectly. Would highly recommend if you enjoy paranormal/dystopian reads. I was able to finish in one sitting so it's quite a smooth reading and it enjoyable from beginning to end.

Timekeeper Rising is really such a good book, and I cannot wait for the next book. It is rather intriguing from the start and keeps you hooked all the way until the oh so dreaded, yet wonderfully written, cliff hanger at the end. Totally worth the read as there are so many great and well developed characters. I definitely recommend it!
