Even with our modern technology, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cannot be treated or cured. I've been bed or chair bound since I was a kid. The advent of Virtual Reality technology has given me a chance for a new life. Or rather dozens of them. Heh.
I'm an avid gamer, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
In the games I could be what I wanted to be, who I wanted to be. A mighty warrior, a powerful spellcaster, the charming rogue. The crafter. The builder. All of those and more have helped to greatly alleviated my problems.
But a new game is coming out; one with the power to change the world. It uses a brand new technology, based around the first ever deep immersion Dive Pod. With it there is no more game lag or graphical limits. It is being heralded as the greatest breakthrough in Virtual Reality technologies since its founding.
And the first and only game for it: Universe Online.
No longer will players be stuck on a single large world to explore. No longer will there a limit to what you can do, what you can be. Fly spaceships between the stars, conquer planets, create custom technology. Mine, Build, Destroy. Explore. Rule.
I found this book a lot of fun, going straight through it in a day.
The protagonist was both able and relatable. Ability enough to be a significant hero and thereby satisfying. And relatable in that his attitudes were "normal" - I have a hard time reading about protagonists who are overly bitter or uncaring.
The story kept me engaged throughout, not spending too much time on any scene, shifting when I was ready for the next part. Also, there was no issues with annoyingly abusive or stupid characters - I've had to drop a few books who used this badly.
The book ends without any major plot points resolved, except maybe one. Still, it seems a good place to break as the sense of the setting and the protagonist's interaction with it seems set for a major shift.
The game-elements in re to setting were well done, if a bit sparse. The sparseness is due to the character's starting situation and didn't detract from my enjoyment. There is enough done with other settings in the story that I was satisfied.
The game-elements in re to character development...I think this seemed a bit OP to me. Too much too fast, not giving enough time for each element to be given proper showcasing in the story. It works in terms of story, but it fell a bit short for me when it came to "honoring" the developments.
The game-elements in re to character options seems fantastic, something that would be amazing to see in a game. Maybe a bit complicated to get the hang of, but a lot of fun to play with :)
Overall, I like this story and recommend it to anyone who just wants a fun story.
i love this book iv'e been with the author sense he started writing this book on royalroadl.com a long while ago and personally enjoyed this
this book has originality most authors of the vrmmorpg category go for a s&m (sword and magic for all you pervs) instead of the si-fy them of the concept that Viken went with and while part one is short it has a part 2 and a book 2 on amazon to read. While keeping his concept he writes an interesting story that i read many times and is worth the money in my opinion
the characters are also well defined. with the main character having clear traits and sticking to them. and i can relate to the main character to an existent while being interesting.
I really liked this one. I've always been partial to scifi, and I've also liked most building scenarios, what's better than a fresh start on a broken down space station? Ahh, yes, that's the stuff. Big fan of this kind of thing. There's still some issues with grammar and spelling in this one, but the author has done a decent job of getting most errors out of the text. I'll definitely be reading the next one in the series, and there's no time like the present to start. If you're a scifi fan, and if you're a LitRPG fan and a scifi fan, then this is one you won't want to miss.
Although a bit short, the story grabs you! A "gaming" story but more in line with technology instead of magic / fantasy.
Hopefully book 2 is longer, very soon out, and just as good if not better. hard to do as this start was very well written and makes you want to read more!
This is a great start to a book that has great potential. It will probably get even better as the series goes on. I can't wait for some of his web novels will get published.
