This is a pretty brisk overview of personal "Arms & Armour" from the earliest recorded hand weapons up the the most modern technology at the time of publishing (~1970s). The focus is, predictably, on European weapons and armor, but non-European items are scattered throughout the earlier eras, with a dedicated section at the end. Overall, this does give a good sense for the rough technological progression over time with well-chosen illustrations and good pace.
