This Burning House

Barrett Coleman runs into burning buildings for a living, steady and certain, even when everything around him is going up in flames. His wife, Liberty, is the one fire he was never trained to fight. They have already been through more than most people survive. Now they are fighting to hold on to each other and they live they spent years building.

Fire does not care how hard you have fought. It only needs one moment of looking away, one thing left burning, to take everything.

This Burning House is gritty, gut-wrenching, and real. A story about love, loss, and the fires we never see coming.

"If you think you can stand the fire, you are free to walk right into this burning house."

A.T. Good has done it again. This Burning House is an absolute 5-star read, but consider this your explicit fair warning: pay attention to the trigger warnings and protect your peace.

The story follows Barrett, a firefighter, and Liberty, who is—understandably—an absolute mess after the unimaginable grief of a stillbirth. As Liberty struggles with self-sabotage, Barrett does everything in his power to cover her in grace while they navigate marriage, addiction, and raising their 5-year-old son, Atticus.

Having experienced a stillbirth myself, this book tore me completely open. I had to take multiple breaks just to catch my breath and process the heavy emotions. But honestly? You don't have to share that specific grief to be shattered by this book—anyone with a heart is going to feel this one in their chest.

Just when you think the story is pulling you toward a hopeful, happy ending, the author comes back with a machete and twists it in your back. Brilliant? Absolutely. Devastating as wholehearted hell? 100%. I am still sitting here, hours later, just shaking my head in disbelief.

It is heavy, raw, and fiercely emotional. If you're ready for a book that will completely wreck you, don't walk—run.

This book was a hell of a ride. I could be laughing and crying all within the same few pages. The characters were very relatable. As a mom, step- mom and someone who has experienced miscarriage, as well as being a first responder, there were so many parts of both characters that hit almost uncomfortably close to home. The first responder humor was on point as always!

This book was very heavy though, and I definitely recommend reading the content warning at the back of the book. I went in blind, and I found myself needing to take breaks.

This book was beautifully written. It tore my heart out and stomped on it, and now I think I need therapy. So of course I'm going to recommend it so everyone else can be traumatized with me!
