This novella is essentially a historical prologue to the upcoming The Sea Beyond duology by Carrick. Brennan has long been on my favourite authors list and her work as half of Carrick is pushing her further up the rankings. I should really try books by Helms too, I guess, the other half of Carrick.
I really, really enjoyed this short story. One of my favourite kinds of worldbuilding are ones which authentically merge real-world myths with the author's ideas, and this world seems to be a great example of this. The historical aspects of the book were also great -- every other paragraph I ended up googling a word or two there only to find myself at a fascinating Wikipedia article about something I knew nothing about.
I especially enjoyed the deft handling of genuine real world issues. In particular, the relationship between Mir and the Sephardic Jews his vessel was carrying was quite engagingly written.
I can't wait for The Eye of Leviathan. I might well read it almost on day 1...
