I have not read all of the stories, but can post a review on 2 that I have read. (I like these authors and am sure I will enjoy the rest of the stories too.)
After the Rain (Brides of Weatherton, Book 1) by Leah Atwood SUNSHINE AFTER THE RAIN I enjoyed this sweet novella that had faith, friendship and family. Rand McCade was still mourning the death of his late wife Mellie, but he made a promise to her on her deathbed to remarry and had placed an ad with an agency for a mail order bride. Lettie Morgan had lost the love of her life and didn't know she was expecting until after his death. With Daniel gone, her mother was trying to force her to marry another man who had proven to be violent. Lettie knows that for her own safety and that of her unborn child, she must leave Baltimore, and chooses to do so as a mail order bride. The story of Rand and Lettie is two people fulfilling a need and with hope, they will fall in love. I loved the dialogue and honesty that they shared with each other. Can Rand and Lettie find love again. I was happy with the ending and found this story to be uplifting. The thing about dark skies and rainy days is that, if you wait long enough, the sun will always shine again.
Mail Order Brides: Jessie's Bride (A historical western romance novelette series ~ Book 1) by Susette Williams Love Prevails This is a short mail order bride story. Jessie Kincaid has been writing to Sarah Engle and sends her a ticket to come so they can marry. Jessie, 24 years of age, is the youngest of four boys being raised by their mother, their father having passed away. Sarah is raising two brothers and a con-artist father, her mother having passed away. The storyline and dialogue is sweet and simple, with twist and turns making it entertaining. Surprises happen when they marry and none of Jessie's family even knows he has sent for a mail order bride. Sarah's father has told her she can't marry Jessie, will she disobey him and go anyway? Some wording used in the story are not necessarily historical correct but still a fun story.
Here are my thoughts on the first two books I've read this week. I'll have more reviews for more of this collection later:
After the Rain by Leah Atwood
Leah Atwood brings us a story of two people who are brought together by circumstances beyond their control as they try to find love again. I felt as though I was there as each town was described with such detail.
I loved both of the main characters, Rand and Lettie, for their honesty with one another and their willingness to try again. One character though stood out for me though was warm and loving Myrtle. She immediately extended her friendship and home to Lettie. Such hospitality with a stranger!
While reading this book many life lessons spoke to me but forgiveness was at the forefront. That complete forgiveness only is possible with God.
Romance in the Rockies by Heather Blanton
All I can say is what a fascinating read! Heather Blanton tells a story like one I've never read before. I couldn't get enough and read this book every chance I got.
The description of the characters of the rough and tumble town of the old west made the story quite believable. I was transformed back to the lawless old west within the first few pages.
My favorite character Naomi stood out from the beginning. She was the leader of the sisters, strong, opinionated, but yet quite loveable. She struggles with her faith in God after some major things happen to her. She made me think about my walk with God when dealing with hard circumstances. Just like Naomi I think, is it too easy because of where I live? Am I too quick to judge and therefore not a good witness?
Although this is a clean and Christian this book, it's my thought that it does deal with very adult situations. Therefore it may not be suitable for young teenagers.
I was given this book in exchange for my honest review by one of the authors.
The first book, After the Rain, was cheesy and unrealistic to the point I could barely finish it. Good thing it was short. I'd already read A Lady in Defianceand felt it was the best of all. It was a great example of showing forgiveness and that sinners can overcome negative odds and it was pretty realistic. Rocky Mt. Oasis was slow and preachy but had a good hero in Sky Jordan. Bounty and Jessie's Bride tied for the worst in the set. The former being very cheesy and the latter being amateurish and silly. I still enjoy reading boxed sets because it allows a reader to get a taste of a number of authors at once.
All of the books had good story lines, but I have never read books with more mistakes. At first I thought they were just typos but some of them had so many mistakes that I realized the writer had just hurried through as she wrote the story. Words were omitted, "she" was used to describe a man, one person had a horse, then he didn't have one, then the horse appeared again, one character's name was changed from Megan to Marion, etc.
The last story was way to short to be called a book, more like a chapter. Also every story had at least one grammar or spelling error. However nothing that was too distracting from the stories. O overall a very worthy read, glad to have had the chance this last month with Amazon kindle lending library.
Wonderful stories, full of suspense and descriptive of early Western life. Each story was unique with obstacles and Christian passion. This is proof of the concept of excellence in storytelling without any foul language or gratuitous sex and violence. We need more literature like this.
This is the book set that turned me onto Westerns! These faith based stories were all well written with strong female leads. If you are looking for an introduction like I was then this is a good pick. Sometimes you've got to step away from the usual book and need a change of scenery. These are inspirational stories.
This is an absolutely wonderful collection of western love stories. Strong women and godly heroes. Mail order bride to bride of convenience. God's plan for each shows through as these couples work out their love stories. Highly recommend.
