My mom bought this copy for me when I was 9-years-old for 50 cents, and I still own it!

I learned so much about Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan. The reader gets a very good sense of what Teacher had to put up with prior to the enlightening moment at the water pump. The author has detailed significant events between Helen and Annie, including attending Radcliff and beyond!

Detailed black-and-white illustrations add a wonderful dimension to this story.

I recommend this book for young and old alike!

T-E-A-C-H-E-R! To Helen Keller, the most important word she would ever learn. And to Anne Sullivan, the most beautiful.

I have had this hardcover from 1958 on my bookshelves for a very long time. Imagine my surprise, when I learned, in the past two weeks, that a hidden treasure had been patiently awaiting me! Awaiting us. This middle grades biography will go down as being one of the most meaningful read-alouds I have ever had with one of my kids.

My 14-year-old was the audience for this one, and she was captured by Helen’s story immediately.

Yes, most of us know that Helen Keller went on to be the most famous deaf-dumb-blind person that our planet has probably ever produced. Many of us have seen some version of the movie, “The Miracle Worker,” too.

But, there is so much more to this story. So much more!

I had no idea how absolutely tragic and compelling Anne Sullivan’s life was (she who went on to be Teacher). Good God, the woman was so awe-inspiring, I’m not even sure I could capture it in words.

And, Helen Keller? Did you know that she taught herself to swim, in the ocean (with Teacher forever and always watching, but never filling her mind with doubts or fear).

Did you know that she used to row around in a boat, on their property? She had ropes tied to trees so she could navigate the shore.

Did you know that Helen not only learned the manual alphabet and Braille, she learned to write and type so that others could read her words? Did you know that she taught herself how to READ LIPS with her hands??

Did you know that she taught herself Latin, Greek and French??

The friendship between these two phenomenal women went far past the details of the movies, and Helen Keller’s childhood. These women were there for each other, always.

This was just the most tremendous story, one that has truly humbled both my daughter and me.

How can we not be better human beings after knowing these women??

Šįkart atvirkščiai – ne todėl, kad knyga tik 140 puslapių (tad savaime suprantama peikti už ilgumą tikrai negalima), bet labai norėjos, kad autorė labiau „įlįstų“ į herojės – aklos, kurčios mergaitės – vidų, daugiau perteiktų jos jausenų, metamorfozių, aplinkinio pasaulio suvokimo niuansų. Norėti tai galima, bet puikiai suprantu, kad perteikti beveik neįmanoma pačiai autorei nepabuvus tokioje būsenoje. O pabūti reiktų ilgai, ir dar pačioje ankstyvojoje vaikystėje.

Tai knyga apie pasiaukojimą, kantrybę, neblėstančią viltį, ištikimybę ir nuostabią draugystę. Apie nepaprastas žmogaus galias, kurių dažnai jis pats net nežino turįs. Apie Mokinę ir Mokytoją, kurias norisi rašyti iš didžiosios raidės.
Tai ne romanas, – šioje knygoje nerasime to, kas būdinga romanams, – tik vieno ypatingo žmogaus biografija, kuri praėjus ir šimtui metų tebejaudina skaitytojus. Retame romane autoriams pasiseka pasiekti tokį skaitytojo emocijų skatinimą, įtraukimą į veiksmą kaip šioje tikroje istorijoje. Baisu, graudu ir džiaugsminga vienu metu – ne dažnai skaitant taip pasitaiko. Sunku patikėti, kad žmogus gali nugalėti iš pirmo žvilgsnio neįveikiamas kliūtis – o nugalėjo! – tai nenuginčijamas faktas, kurį pripažino istorikai, įtraukdami Heleną Keler į žymiausių pasaulio žmonių sąrašą. Tikra moters istorija, kurią verta perskaityti visiems, kurie netiki ir nenori, jog gali kažką įveikti, padaryti,sukurti... patiko ši istorija dėl to, jog tai tikra jos biografija. Bet šiaip, sakyčiau skaitėsi gan sunkiai, o ir rašymo stilius tiek daug neįtraukė, visgi tokia plona, o skaičiau tris dienas.

I first read this book in third grade and I still have my copy of it. I have, in fact, passed it on to several of my children when they needed a biography for a book report. I read this over and over as a child and it led to a deep admiration I still carry for this remarkable woman.

This book is a manageable 153 pages and starts with the illness that first struck Helen at the age of 3. It then describes the first visit from Annie Sullivan and the most extraordinary teacher/student relationship that has influenced thousands of people since. The story of Helen is presented in a manner that is easy to understand and fun to read. Not one of my kids had to be pushed to read this, in fact, they would often come to me and tell me facts they learned from the book quite delighted with themselves and marveling at the opposition Helen overcame and what she was able to accomplish.

Great book, will always have a place on my shelf. :)

This book was are really easy read, but I learned so much about Helen Keller! It made me realize how big Anne Sullivan was in Helens life! I didn't realized how much Helen had to go through to learn to read, write etc. This book was really well written! I really enjoyed it!

This is a great story. I think it's good for all ages. It, obviously, is about Helen Keller; and tells about her journy from darkness, silence, and not knowing any better to a life of learning and making something of herself.

This book sits, as it has for almost 45 years... upon my closest bookshelf... with the inscription: To Leannie, Merry Christmas, Love Mommy, 1967. It is the first novel I ever read. I was 8 years old. Helen's story fascinated me then and still does today. It sparked a passion in me that has steered me through life... to connect to others despite difficulty. In my life I have traversed communcation barriers wrought by deafness, language and autism. Helen's story was always with me, helping me to persevere.

Man vis dar nesuvokiama, kiek savyje kai kurie žmonės turi užsispyrimo bei ryžto pasiekti saviems tikslams nepaisant visų kliūčių gyvenime. Ir čia jau nekalbu apie finansus, kažkokios srities neišmanymą ar žinių stoką. Visa ši istorija pasakoja apie aklą bei kurčią mergaitę, kuri vos dvejų metų neteko viso mums matomo bei girdimo pasaulio suvokimo ir tapo uždaryta savo pačios tamsoje, kurioje buvo įkalinta iki atsidavusios mokytojos atsiradimo.

Viskas skamba taip neįtikėtinai, bet čia kuo tikriausia istorija. Net negalėčiau pasakyti, kam romane kliuvo pagrindinis vaidmuo – mokytojai ar Helenai, nes tik jų abiejų bendromis pastangomis, noru pasiekti savo tikslą, buvo įveiktos visos kliūtis, nuo bandymo suprasti kas yra kas iki universiteto baigimo. Įsivaizuojat? Akla bei kurčia mergaitė, tikriausiai net neprisimenanti kaip atrodo daiktai, sugebėjo išmokti juos įvardyti, atpažinti, aprašyti, išmoko net kalbėti ir baigė bakalauro studijas. O visa istorija ir yra apie tai, kaip joms abiem pavyko to pasiekti bei su kokiomis kliūtimis jos susidūrė.

Su šiomis veikėjomis keliaujame nuo pat pradžių. Susipažįstame su Helena, jos vidiniais išgyvenimais jau esant šešerių, kai absoliučiai niekas jos nesupranta, o ir ji pati negali išreikšti savų poreikių. Net tėvai šioje situacijoje yra bejėgiai iki atsirandant mokytojai. Tik ji sugeba prisibelsti iki Helenos supratimo, jos uždaro pasaulio. Ir patikėkit, šios kelionės pradžia tokia sudėtinga, kad prireikė visų įsitraukimo ir kartais griežčiausių priemonių. Tačiau žinote kaip būna su domino. Užtenka vos vieno postūmio, ir galima išjudinti visą kalną. Taip ir šioje istorijoje, pirmasis žingsnis žengtas ir kelio atgal nebeliko, tik judėti pirmyn į atsiveriantį platų pasaulį.

Pagal knygos sakinių struktūrą, visą pasakojimo manierą, knyga skirta maždaug 12 metų vaikams. Tačiau tikrai leis mėgautis istorija ir suaugusiems. Romane leidžiamasi į patį žmogaus vidų, jautriausius ir sunkiausius išgyvenimus su kuriais tenka susidurti nematančiam bei negirdinčiam pasaulio bei jį supančių žmonių. Todėl visi skaitantys ras savą mintį, galbūt net savą motyvaciją ir tikrai mėgausis šia trumpa, bet nepaprasta istorija.

Šią knygą teko perskaityti netikėtai kaip dalį sūnaus namų darbų (ačiū mokytojai!). Nesitikėjau, kad knyga išmuš iš lūkesčių pusiausvyros jau nuo pirmų puslapių. Tai tikrai motyvuojanti ir įkvepianti ypatingos Helenos Keler istorija. Kai viskas gali atrodyti labai tamsu, tai tikrai nebus tokia tamsa (ir tyla), kurioje nugyveno Helena ir kiek visko dar sugebėjo pasiekti... Aptarėme knygą su sūnumi, jam taip pat labai patiko.

Motyvacinė knyga tiems, kurie nenori mokytis!

Helen Keller - kurčia, akla ir nebylė mergaitė. Ji būdama 19mėn. persirgo paslaptinga infekcija, po kurios prarado regą ir klausą. Niekas nežino, kokia tai liga. Manoma, kad ši nežinoma infekcija galbūt meningitas, gripo komplikacija ar raudoniukė. Po šios ligos mergaitė liko neįgali. Helen pasisekė, kad ji turėjo mylinčius ir gana pasiturinčius tėvus, kurie ja rūpinosi ir neatidavė į prieglaudą (kas buvo įprasta XIX a. pabaigoje). Pastebėję, kad Helen tampa nevaldoma ir auga tarsi laukinis žvėriukas, tėvai ėmėsi ieškoti mokytojos, kuri išmokytų Helen bendrauti. Mergaitės mokytoja tapo panelė Anna Sullivan. Nepaprastos erudicijos ir sumanumo moteris. Lidėjusi Helen visą gyvenimą.

Helen mokytojos atvykimą laiko savo sielos gimimo diena, diena, kada pradėjo griūti tamsiausias kalėjimas. Diena, kai į neregintį, kurčią ir nebylų pasaulį įspindo pirmasis mokslo šviesos spindulys. Nuo tos dienos Helen pradėjo mokytis ir mokėsi iki paskutiniosios savo gyvenimo dienos. Ji baigė mokyklą, universitetą ir tapo visame pasaulyje žinoma autore bei kovotoja už neįgalių žmonių teises. Helen Keller dėstė universitete, steigė fondus, rinko lėšas neįgaliems vaikams, buvo politiškai aktyvi, apkeliavo visą pasaulį, vaidino filme ir pažinojo ne vieną žymų amerikietį ar prezidentą. Ji nugyveno pilnavertį, meilės ir juoko pripildytą gyvenimą. Helen įrodė pasauliui, kad noras mokytis gali įveikti bet kokias kliūtis, o noras siekti savo tikslų yra stipresnis už savigailą. Ši moteris be galo stipri ir per gyvenimą ėjo iškelta galva.

Knyga man labai patiko. Patiko tiek pati istorija, tiek pasirinktas stilius ją papasakoti. Lengvai skaitoma, aprašyta trumpais skyriais, lakoniškais, sklandžiai sakiniais, su gausa dialogų. Pati istorija atrodo kiek sausoka, bet reiktų nepamiršti, kad ši knyga skirta paaugliams, kurių tikrai nežavi ilgiausi aprašymai at filosofinės vingrybės. Tai įdomi istorija apie tikrą, motyvuojančią asmenybę. Skaitydama knygą nejutau jokio gailesčio, kaip tik širdyje kirbėjo pasididžiavimo ir susižavėjimo jausmas. Kiekviename skyriuje buvo akcentuojama žmogaus stiprybė ir noras tobulėti. Galbūt aš niekada nesuprasiu, kaip tris pagrindinius savo jutimus praradusi mergaitė užaugo tokią stipria, elegantiška ir žavinga dama. Bet aš tikrai žinau, kad žmonės, o ypač vaikai, turi super galių ir gali pasiekti beprotiškai daug, reikia tik labai norėti.

Vertinu 4.5/5. Rekomenduoju tiems, kas nori susipažinti su šia istorine asmenybe ar atrasti norą mokytis. Pakiškite šią knygą savo tinginiukams paaugliams po nosimi, galbūt ši moteris jiems taps motyvacija mokytis.

I really liked this book because it was informational and I learned a lot from it. I thought that Helen Keller was very ambitious about wanting to learn. Most people would just give up if they were in her position. I liked how the bond between certain characters were really strong.
Plot
Helen Keller is a young girl who can’t talk, see, or hear. Her parents feel bad for her so they let her do whatever she wants. This includes taking food from their plates instead of eating her own. Helen throws a lot of tantrums. After she tries to hurt her baby sister, her parents talk about sending her away. They contact Anne Sullivan, and she becomes Helen’s teacher. At first Helen refuses to learn anything. When Anne tries to punish Helen, her parents tell her to stop. Since Helen can’t learn names, she calls Anne Teacher. Teacher takes Helen away from her parents and sister. While away Helen learns how to read and write. They go to college together to widen Helen’s education and they also go on tours. Teacher used to be blind as well so her vision starts to go away. Teacher finds someone who can help Helen when her vision starts to go. Helen and Polly go on tours and talk about Helen’s experience. Teacher eventually dies and Helen writes about her. The house that held Helen’s book started on fire. Helen had to restart but she couldn’t remember as much as before so the new book is much smaller. Helen and Polly live in a house together with a maid who occasionally comes to help them.
Characterization
Helen is a stubborn girl in the beginning of the book. Once Teacher comes Helen becomes ambitious and wants to learn. She is blind, deaf, and mute so some things are difficult for her to do. At the end of the book Helen can write and talk.
Teacher had very poor vision when she was Helen’s age. She is very ambitious and refuses to leave Helen even when she can’t read to her anymore. Teacher was an understanding person who never gave up.
Recommendation
I would recommend this book to both boys and girls in middle school. This is a small book with a big message. Kids can learn they can achieve anything if they actually try and have the desire to do it. They can also learn how the medical field has changed since the time of Helen Keller.

Read this with my Mom when I was a kid. Decided recently to pull it off the shelf and read it with one of my kids who was struggling. (Actually I am having my kid read it to me.) The story of Helen has stayed with me since I first read it. I had forgotten that Anne was 14 before she had any formal schooling. I read stories like this and become very angry with the education system of today, where kids will be labeled as excellent, average, or poor with very little opportunity for the lower tier children to move up.

Un libro muy bonito, fácil y rápido de leer. Aunque trata el tema de la superación no cae en tópicos, sino que lo hace de forma realista y deja claro que no es un camino de rosas. Además, es una buena forma de motivarse conociendo la vida de una mujer tan fascinante, sin caer en la morbosidad ni la autocompasión.

Si le bajo nota es porque a veces el estilo narrativo es confuso: salta sin previo aviso de la cabeza de Helen o gente alegada a una voz omnisciente; y le cuesta a veces expresar bien cómo se sienten o perciben el mundo las personas, algo que se nota en Helen al principio.

The book I read for my book project was Helen Keller. This book was about a girl who was blind and deaf. When Helen was born they just thought she was going to be blind because that’s how she was when her mother gave birth to her. Although, they didn’t know she was going to be deaf as well. They found out that she was deaf because a few weeks after she got out of the hospital her mother was ringing a bell for her to know it was time to eat and Helen didn’t react so then her mother started to worry and they took her to the doctors to find that she was also deaf. So as Helen grew older she learned to communicate through body language/ movements and by reading brail. Brail is a type of font that is used for the blind to read. Every letter has a different number of dots that are risen up out of the paper to feel and read. The book was a very good at describing how she lived and made it through life in darkness and silence. My favorite character in the book was Helen Keller. The reason she was my favorite character was because she really proved that even with her disadvantages she could still make it through life. Though, my least favorite character was her nanny/teacher. I didn’t like her because of how she badly treated Helen. I think the author wrote this book to show other people how it was like for Helen Keller growing up and that it was not easy for her but she still made it. The book was kind of sad. It really made me think about how thankful I should be for the things I have and that there are other people out there with these disadvantages that are still very successful. It kept me interestly reading until the very end because it had a lot of things and details in it that were practically unpredictable. I personally think they should make a movie about her. Because the story about Helen Keller’s life could be very inspiring to those with disadvantages. I also think that Helen Keller’s story could be recommended to anyone at any age and still have them interested! This book was one of my favorites out of all the books I have ever read and is definitely a book I wouldn’t mind reading more than once.

An excellent introduction to the amazing life of Helen Keller and to the remarkable role of Teacher in her life. Helen Keller became blind, deaf, and mute as an infant but learned to read, write, and speak. She attended and graduated from college. After graduation, she travelled across the USA as a speaker to raise awareness and funds for people who were blind. After WWII, she travelled the world to raise awareness and funds for people who became blind as a result of war and bombing.

I read this book when I was in elementary and loved it! I read it over and over. I still have my copy from back then and have been reading it at night with my 7 year old. I was so excited tonight after we finished it when she said, "Mom, can you show me which bookshelf you keep this on so I can read it any time I want?" Yay! She loves it as much as I do. :) Afterwards, we found some great photographs of Helen, Anne, and Polly online to end our Helen Keller journey.

I recently finished reading this aloud to my children. We all loved it very much. My children are now joining in my fascination and admiration of this remarkable woman. I want my children to understand the value of persevering despite the circumstances and I feel Helen'a life story is a great example of this.

Hellen Keller i knew the name before but not much about her.After reading this book there came a chill towards my spine how much dumb i have been in this world. The book is really a nice and interesting one and will definitely motivate anyone who reads it. I am definitely motivated by this book.

This has more detail than the first biography we read and we're really enjoying it.
She does put words in little Helen's mouth before Helen has even learned language and I'm not sure I like that, but it is difficult to think how she should represent Helen's experiences and reactions to things.

I read this book with my kids. It was very interesting and got them interested in sign language and stuff. My 6 year old can now do the manual alphabet. Fun!
