Noodle and Zeek love danger, but when a real adventure comes their way, will they be ready?

Best friends Noodle and Zeek are among the first in line when a new store, Danger Guy, opens in their local mall. It has all the survival gear the boys could dream of, and their excitement is lessened only when they notice two big, angry men yelling at the owner. When Noodle and Zeek wander into a small room on the other side of the store, they’re shut inside. That’s when the two realize they’re in the back of a truck heading out of town.

After a terrifying ride, Noodle and Zeek arrive at an ancient temple full of treasures. There they discover that their kidnappers are the two men from the store, and the boys are not the only ones who have been captured. The Emersons, a famous husband-and-wife explorer team, are there too. It’s up to Noodle and Zeek to rescue the prisoners and save the day—before they’re trapped in the temple forever!

Thumbs Up, Danger Guys!

Not to be a wiseguy, but I approached this book with a bit of trepidation. I've read Tony Abbott's "Secrets of Droon" books, and they are perfectly fine recyclings of old adventure/quest/fantasy/alternate world/flying carpet plots for very, very early chapter book readers. This series looked like it might be more of the same, just with an "Indiana Jones" kind of vibe. Well shame on me for being such a snot.

These Danger Guys books are cheerful, super high energy, rollicking adventure treats with a consistent and absolutely pitch perfect tone.

Noodles is the brains of the duo and Zeke is the brawn, but when you're talking about two elementary school kids that doesn't make a lot of difference. Noodles is the narrator, and his voice is just right. He's excited by Adventure! and up for Danger! and he and Zeke have an easy, mutually supportive relationship. There is no snark, or sarcasm, or irony here. No cheap shots and no odd mean business or weird sub-plots. No snotty siblings or dumbo parents. This is all pure gung ho enthusiasm and thumbs-up derring do.

In this volume the boys are thrilled to attend the opening of a new adventure gear store, but they end up in the back of a truck operated by artifact thieves and find themselves in the middle of a temple treasure hunt. The plot screams along and you probably get two or three Indiana Jones movies' worth of action in one short book. With all of the scenes, and the sliding, falling, climbing, running, escaping, and breathless edge of the seat action this felt like a virtual reality game or a high end theme park ride, and I mean that in a good way, since Abbott tells the story with crisp, clean driving prose.

I could see this being a great chapter book for the 7 to 9 year crowd and a happy read-to for younger adventurers. It's just upbeat fun, readable and rewarding. A very nice find for the early reader shelf.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Noodle and Zeek are endearing kids just looking for a bit of adventure... and boy, do they get an adventure!

The text is appropriate for young chapter book readers and there are pictures scattered throughout. Kids today might think the pictures are a bit funny, though; this book was first published 20 years ago, and the illustrations show the age. In all other regards, though, the story is timeless.

Note: I received a digital copy of this book through NetGalley.

Henry "Noodle" Newton lays in bed dreaming of fresh buttery waffles when suddenly his best friend Zeek climbs through his bedroom window shouting "Danger!" Noodle jumps up looking all around for the where the danger might be lurking. Zeek tells him to hurry up that Danger Guy is opening today and they had to hurry if they were going to be one of the first in line for the special prize drawing. Skipping breakfast they rush off to check out their dream store. Little did they know that they were also rushing toward the adventure of a lifetime.

Noodle and Zeek are two boys who live for adventure and exploration, much like every other young boy in the world. Give them a cave and they want to enter and explore every crevice, an overgrown jungle and they will imagine themselves great explorers working their way through the Amazon jungle. Danger Guys was a great hit with both my nieces and nephews between the ages of six and nine. More so with the boys than the girls, but all said they would love to go on the adventure with them. Each imagined themselves as Noodle or Zeek and told how they would handle the situations the boys found themselves in. All said they would love to read more about them.

If you have a young reader who enjoys adventure stories then you will find this is a story that will appeal to them greatly. Encourage their love of reading with this new adventure series.

I got a review copy of this book from NetGalley. And I enjoyed this book and think it will be a good series, but having read many of Tony Aboott's newer books I was surprised by the writing. I was looking for something a little more, I cannot really describe it better than that. I was looking for writing more consistent with his more recent works. The story here just seems a little soft. I did not realize it was a reprint of earlier works until I started to review it. It is a good story and will definitely entertain young readers. I can recommend it and know it will be enjoyed.

The book is the first adventure of Zeek Pilinsky and Noodle - aka Henry Newton. They are excited because a new store is opening in the local mall "Danger Guy" with all the gear a guy could want for adventures or exploring. But before they even make it to the store opening then have a rough encounter with two big brutes, nicked named 'Mustache' and the other guy. Soon the friends realize they have ended up in a back of a truck not a back room at the supply store and their adventure really begins. They encounter famous explorers Mr. and Mrs. Emmerson and together they must save the day or be trapped in a lost temple forever.

The book comes in at 70 pages with a number of wonderful illustrations by Joanne L. Scribner. It is a fun story with a fast pace. It is a good early chapter book. So pick it up and join Zeek and Noodles on their first adventure and you will be sure to return for more.

This first book in the Danger Guys series by Tony Abbott is an action-packed story that is sure to capture the imagination of any young reader looking for an adventure. As Noodle and Zeke arrive at the grand opening of the Danger Guy adventure store with hopes of winning of few prizes, they suddenly find themselves getting more than they had hoped for. Filled with kidnappers, an ancient temple, priceless artifacts and two amazing "Danger Guys", Tony Abbott has created an entertaining and captivating story! I read this with my youngest son and was quite pleased to see him take an overwhelming interest in Zeke and Noodle...and we're sure to continue reading the other books in this series as well. Although this book was originally published in 1994, I did not find the illustrations to be overly dated. In fact, both my son and I found the drawings to be quite amusing and each picture provided us with the opportunity to further discuss the story. I can easily see this story leading to a trip to the local Art Museum or Natural History Museum in search of ancient artifacts. And as a parent, any book that can capture my son's attention and offer an opportunity for further explorations is a FIVE star book!

Noodle and Zeek go to the grand opening of a Danger Guys adventure store. Among all of the typical survival gear, there is a table of golden masks, little statues, and jewelry. When Noodle and Zeek go into a small room filled with the “best stuff” in the store, they find themselves in the back of a truck. The boys are whisked away from Mayville. After a while, the truck enters an underground road. The back doors pop open when the truck hits a deep rut, and the boys escape. Noodle falls down a hidden tunnel, and Zeek follows. The tunnel leads to a water slide which, in turn, leads to an underground river. When the boys find an underground temple, they know that it is the source of the artifacts at the store. They, also, find the Emersons, a famous exploring duo, tied up in a cave near the temple. Mr. Emerson tells the boys about the booby trap set by the ancients. When the temple door is forced open, the lake above will start to drain into the temple. Of course, the thieves set off the trap. Can Noodle and Zeek save the day before everyone drowns?

I have an active 4yo boy, this was the first chapter book he ever sat through. Success! Enough action to be interesting, enough mystery / suspense to make him want to know what happens next, not so many big words or plot twists he couldn't follow it.

A good short chapter book for younger readers. I'm afraid older readers will find it more difficult to follow at times because of lack of details.
