I love an origin story, and what makes this one even more special is that it’s the origin story of a place that was my home for two years. I felt like I was back in balmy Liberia, at the fiestas, at the beaches, in the classrooms with students, at Palermo for Spanglish. I felt all the angst (I mean really I’ve added quite a few people to my own shit list), wonder, joy, badassery, determination, and am left feeling in awe of what Bethany endured but mostly of the all the success she still managed even when the douchebag cards were stacked against her. I devoured the book and am walking away with renewed respect for what Bethany accomplished in Costa Rica.

And if you do read it I’ll show you where I’m mentioned, selfishly 🤣.

Oh and by the way, Alan Trumpet, I still hate you.

I’m not a big reader yet I finished this quickly and I didn’t want it to end. At times it was hard to believe and painful to realize that the story is true. It is a tale of incredible ups and downs, and one woman’s ability to keep going no matter what. Very inspiring to anyone who’s ever had a big dream. Highly recommend!
