Nabarun Bhattacharya
32 books104 followersNabarun Bhattacharya was an Indian Bengali writer deeply committed to a revolutionary and radical aesthetics. He was born at Baharampur (Berhampur), West Bengal. He was the only child of actor Bijon Bhattacharya and writer Mahashweta Devi.
He is most known for his anarchic novel, Herbert (1993), which was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, and adapted into a film by the same name in 2005.
Nabarun is renowned as a fiction writer, and justifiably so. But he wrote poems as well and Ei Mrityu Upotyoka Aaamaar Desh Na (This Valley of Death Is Not My Country) is arguably his most acclaimed collection of poems.
Nabarun over the years consistently contributed to various little magazines, which together constitute a promising alternative mode of literary culture in Bengal that challenges the influence of big capital. It is equally noteworthy that his writing style deconstructs the gentle middle class ethos of the Bengali society. Most of his characters belong to the lower strata of existence. His fictions reinvigorate the received Bengali language with forceful idioms and expressions from the margins, which might often bombard the chaste taste of a Tagorean upper and middle class, still very much under the spell of a 19th century Victorian sensibility.

আমার কাছে নবারূণ ভট্টাচার্য মানেই হইতেছে বিপ্লব আর বিদ্রোহ। বিজন ভট্টাচার্য আর মহাশ্বেতা দেবীর ঘরে যে একটা আস্তো একটা বিপ্লব জন্মাইবো এইটাই স্বাভাবিক আসলে, আলাদা কইরা আর মুগ্ধ হই নাই তাই।
উপন্যাসের প্রস্তাবনা অংশের প্রথম তিন শব্দে বলা হইছে লুব্ধক "একটি কুকুর উপকথা", তারপর নবারুণ কইছে তার ছোটবেলার সঙ্গী জিপসি নামের কুকুরটার প্রতি ঋণ শোধ করার চেষ্টা হিসাবে বইটারে দেখা যাইতে পারে। প্রস্তাবনা পইড়াই আমি গইলা গিয়া বইখান কিন্যা ফালাইছি।
লেখক কী হিসাবে বইটা লিখছে এইটা উনারই ভালো জানার কথা৷ তয় আমারে জেনারালাইজড করতে কইলে আমি কমু এইটা মানবজাতিরে প্যারোডি কইরা লেখা একটা অসাধারণ স্যাটায়ার।

নভেলার প্লট হইলো কোলকাতা শহর, শহরটারে কুকুরশূণ্য কইরা ফেলা হবে, কারণ কুকুরেরা শহরে নিতান্তই অপ্রয়োজনীয়৷ তারপরই লেখক হালকা কইরা ব্রাজিলিয়ান মিরাকেলের পর বুর্জোঁয়া শ্রেণীরা কেমন কইরা রাস্তার ভিখারি আর বাচ্চাকাচ্চাদের মাইরা ফেলার লাইগা পুলিশ আর সামরিক বাহিনী দিয়া একটা দল বানাইছিলো সেই কথা মনে করায় দিলো।
এরপর আমরা দেখি কোলকাতা কুকুরহীন করার লাইগা নানান মতামত আসতেছে, মতামতের পক্ষে বিপক্ষে আলোচনা হইতেছে। কোলকাতা কুকুরহীন হইতে হবে, কিন্তু হইতে হবে সবচেয়ে সাশ্রয়ী আর নির্ঝঞ্ঝাট উপায়ে।
নাৎসি হিউম্যান এক্সপেরিমেন্টের নানান উদাহরণ মাঝে মইধ্যেই টাইনা আনা হইছে, যেইসব কাজগুলা কুকুরের উপর করতে কারো কোনরকম ভ্রুক্ষেপ হইতেছে না, অইগুলা যে মানুষ মানুষের উপরেও করছে সময়ে সময়ে সেইটা হালকা কইরা খোঁচা দিয়া কয়া দেওয়া আছে কিছুক্ষণ পরপর।
এরপর কোলকাতা শহরটারে তেনারা কুকুরহীন করতে পারলেন কী পারলেন না, কুকুরেরা নিজেরা বাঁচনের লাইগা একত্রিত হইলো কী হইলো না, শহরটারই বা পরে কী হইলো সেইটা বইয়ে পইড়া নিয়েন। এমনেই ম্যালা স্পয়লার দিয়া দিছি মনে হইতেছে!

কুকুর নিয়ে এমন ব্যঙ্গাত্মক লেখা নবারুণের পক্ষেই সম্ভব। ছোট একটা বই তাতে মরিচ ডলার মতো মানুষের অযাচিত কাজকর্মের সমালোচনা করা হয়েছে। কখনো নন-ফিকশনের মতো বিভিন্ন ঘটনা কাহিনির সাথে টেনে আপনাকে উস্কে দিবে, কখনো কবিতার পরশে সেই আগুনে ঘি ঢালবে, কখনো কুকুরদের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সলাপরামর্শ আপনাকে ভাবনার খোরাক জোগাবে। এরকম এক্সপেরিমেন্টাল লেখা পড়তে ভালই লাগে।

There is no place for street dogs in a modern city. One must collect them and systematically eliminate them without hurting public sentiments. One may propose methods used in the holocaust, or simple poisoning in the night. But then, what happens when the dogs, utterly desperate, choose to leave the city collectively? This short wonder of a novella is far superior and more mature than Nabarun's more popular works (like কাঙাল মালসাট( Kangal Malsat)) in terms of subtlety and depiction of human brutality.
It questions the much promoted slogan 'Safe drive. Save life.' Whose life to be exact? The crows, the dogs and cats -- are they ever a part of the design of the human society? Once the author said in an interview, 'Like I have the right to live in the city, a mosquito also has a right to bite me.' From this non-anthropological view, the story forms its basic outline. But then again, some critics compare the dogs with Naxalites whom the state chased and picked up like dogs and killed brutally. I think, the idea is broader and scarier when applied to the helpless classes of the society.
Lubdhak is the Bengali name of the constellation Canis Major or The Greater Dog and it gives directions to the dogs for their safe departure from the city. Lyka and other famous characters also appear as shadowy ghosts and predict that an asteroid is en route to destroy the city Kolkata like many such events in the past.
The sarcastic narrative, at times, accompanied by short poems, often goes quite experimental presenting a chapter in form of a bullet points and counterpoints. Sometimes, the narrative shifts from the third person to first person narratives of the animals. The continuously shifting voices give the novella a sense of urgency, a collective cry.
Like (খেলনানগর (Toy City)), this one also is a dystopian work and can be termed as one of the major literary achievement in Bengali literature.

Pray tin dinei ses korlam. Khubi choto akti uponyas. Kolkata Sahor k shundor kore tolar jonnyo bigoto doshoke je kukur mukto korar obhijan choleche setake niye. Na porle onek kichu jana jabe na. Khub i depressing. Kintu tao pora ta banchoniyo.
