STUCK: Grounded by history, a thousand miles from home
Ten-year-old Luke Brennan is flying alone to Atlanta after visiting his grandparents in London. Eager to return home, a mid-flight announcement changes the United States is under attack.
With the U.S. airspace closed, Luke’s plane is diverted to Cobourg, a tiny town in Canada, where he is one of thousands of passengers suddenly stranded in a foreign country.
Separated from his family, Luke finds an unexpected friend in George, a wise older passenger who helps him navigate the fear of a world that has changed forever. Inspired by real events, STUCK is a story of resilience, friendship, and the incredible kindness of strangers in the face of a national crisis.

July 10, 2026This is my debut middle grades historical fiction novel! I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I had fun writing it, and maybe you’ll learn something new, too.

My 7th grade son and I read this together and really enjoyed it! It allowed for some good conversations about a such a hard day in American history. I enjoyed reading from a perspective that hadn’t really thought about much.

Luke is flying home alone when tragedy strikes on September 11, 2001. His flight is unexpectedly rerouted to Canada. He meets interesting and kind people along the way who help him through days that now live large in memory and in history books. The perspective shifts back and forth between Luke and his parents, as they desperately try to reach their son.
This middle grades historical fiction book carefully and skillfully deals with a terrifying event that affected so many on that Tuesday in September. I appreciate the interesting and memorable characters and their navigation of a largely untold story: what happened to the rest of the planes in the sky on September 11?

Perfect book for young readers! The main character Luke is so mature for his age! Great job on your first book, Emily! ❤️
Review of advance copy
I liked this story I’m not a big fan of historical fiction but it was an interesting perspective of 9/11 I had never heard about.
