Evidence Series Box Set Volume 1: Books 1-3.5

Rate this book
Alternate cover edition of ASIN B00WURVAQY

The first three books in the Evidence Series in one box set. Volume I includes two full-length (300 page) novels and one short (150-page) novel.

Concrete Evidence

A year ago she lost everything. Now she wants revenge…

Accused of stealing artifacts from a five-hundred-year-old shipwreck, underwater archaeologist Erica Kesling is determined to clear her name. She’s concealed her past and taken a job certain to give her access to the buyer of the missing antiquities. She's finally closing in on her goal when she's distracted by a sexy, charismatic intern who makes her want something other than revenge.

But Lee Scott is no intern. He's looking for the lead conspirator in an international artifact smuggling scheme, and Erica is his prime suspect. He’ll do whatever it takes to win her trust and get her to reveal her secrets, even seduce her.

As Erica and Lee struggle to conceal their real agendas, the one thing they can’t hide is the attraction that burns hot between them. When Erica’s quest puts her life in jeopardy, Lee must choose between old loyalties and a woman he never expected to fall for.

Body of Evidence

And she thought facing a firing squad was bad…

When archaeologist Mara Garrett traveled to North Korea to retrieve the remains of GIs lost in combat, she never imagined she’d be arrested, convicted of spying, and sentenced to death. Her only hope is Curt Dominick, the powerful, ambitious, and infuriatingly sexy US attorney prosecuting her uncle, a former vice president of the United States.

What starts off as a rescue mission quickly morphs into a race across the Pacific. Someone is after Mara, and they’ll risk everything to stop her from reaching Washington DC. With betrayal around every corner, Curt and Mara have little reason to trust each other and every reason to deny the sparks between them that blaze hotter than the Hawaiian sun. Still, desire clashes with loyalty when they discover a conspiracy that threatens not only their lives but the national security of the United States.

Withholding Evidence

Some secrets are worth dying for…

Military historian Trina Sorensen has a nearly impossible task before her: get recalcitrant but tempting former Navy SEAL Keith Hatcher to reveal what happened during a top secret Somalia op five years ago. Recent history isn’t usually her forte, but the navy wants an historian’s perspective and has given her the high security clearance to get the job done.

Keith isn't just refusing to tell Trina about the op, he's protecting a national secret that could destroy the lives of those he cares about the most. But not wanting to talk about a covert mission doesn’t mean he isn’t interested in spending time with the sexy historian, and the first time they kiss it’s explosive.

When the past comes pounding on Keith’s door, he’ll do anything to keep Trina safe… Anything, that is, except tell her the secret that could get them both killed.

USA Today bestselling author Rachel Grant also writes thrillers as R.S. Grant. She worked for over a decade as a professional archaeologist and mines her experiences for storylines and settings, which are as diverse as excavating a cemetery underneath an historic art museum in San Francisco, survey and excavation of many prehistoric Native American sites in the Pacific Northwest, researching an historic concrete house in Virginia (inspiration for her debut novel, CONCRETE EVIDENCE), and mapping a seventeenth century Spanish and Dutch fort on the island of Sint Maarten in the Caribbean (which provided inspiration for the island and fort described in CRASH SITE).

She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her archaeologist husband and demanding cat.

All three books are 5-star reads. Just a fantastic series.

CONCRETE EVIDENCE This is my first Rachel Grant book and she is a very intelligent author. I look forward to reading more of her books. I wish her a very long prolific career as she has the master mix for romantic-suspense - romance, hot sex, mystery, suspense and a touch of humor. Great stuff.

The book starts with a 60 year old murder that overshadows the characters, and they don't even know anything about it. How this connects to present day events, or doesn't is not a spoiler I'm going to give up. I will only say that it was very intriguing to me how the story wound it's way around it.

The plot centers on Erica, a disgraced marine archeologist who wants nothing more than to redeem her reputation and rebuild her life. Enter Lee. He is assigned as her intern, but actually was sent to spy on her and find out who is using Talon & Drake to smuggle artifacts. Lee has an agenda and so does Erica. They both start out using each other which is just fine until someone falls in love, then the lies start to matter. To Erica, who has had her life destroyed by lies, it is a bitter discovery that Lee is lying too.

BODY OF EVIDENCE Awesome, fantastic, fast paced, international political intrigue, hot romance-on-the-run. This book could have been ripped from the headlines in its' subject matter. Rachel Grant is a wonderful new author and is a must read for me.

Mara Garrett is an archeologist with a group that recovers the remains of American servicemen who have been left behind in war torn countries. It is noble work she has undertaken as a memorial to her grandfather who was one of those men who has not been returned from North Korea after that war. On an expedition to North Korea, on a different serviceman, Mara is separated from her group, captured, imprisoned, tried and convicted as a spy the North Korans. Sentenced to death by firing squad, she is saved by Curt Dominick, a US Attorney and media darling. On the return to Washington D.C. they encounter a plot to kill Mara and can't trust anyone. Raptor (think Blackwater) is after her and Curt must protect her, especially because she has valuable information for his case, national security and because he has fallen in love with her.

WITHHOLDING EVIDENCE Some secrets are meant to stay secret. Even in this media mad society, some things are better off not being broadcast to the world, especially when they have to do with military operations. I'm not a fan of the Wikileaks crowd and their obsession with knowing every State secret. I trust my government, for the most part, and believe I am better off not knowing some things. For a novella, this book packs in quite a lot. The romance is beyond hot and the suspense is intense.

Trina is a Military Historian who has be tasked with writing a report of a SEAL op that took place in Somalia some five years ago. Her SEAL contact, Keith, refuses to talk to her, even though the Pentagon issued the assignment. It is no help for both of them to be instantly attracted to each other. Someone or some group is pushing for the op to be make public. Keith is determined not to let that happen. Trina is just as determined to do the job assigned to her. Can you say rock and hard place? Things turn really serious when Keith's townhouse is bombed with him and Trina inside. Not they must find the responsible party, before they finish their job.

At 0.99 it's a must for her fan :)

I had the same problems I found in Book 4, the first I read. The love story is based on lust, which might be a good beginning, but if it's the only piece of a puzzle, it's never enough.

Book one: pride is a sin, I know. But after all the lies and manipulations he forced on the heroine (including choosing his career on her life and then at the end still not believing her),a good dose of pride on her part should have been a must.

Book two. Just one wotd: therapist. She's seriously in need of one. She's basically inventing a story in her head. And again, after all the manipulation, and the last one was pretty heavy handed, you extricate yourself from the mess, you don't let him touch you.

Novella three: so short that the love story is in fantasyland.

I appreciated Grant's use of archaeologists and historians for her heroines. They are not common professions for heroines in novels and I had no idea of the variety of the work done by historians and archaeologists. I was less appreciative of the tendency of the males to be assholes. Oh, they always, or almost always, had a good reason and they weren't alphaholes, just overbearing, arrogant, and c0ndescending at times. Happily, they are all capable of admitting when they were wrong. Part of my frustration with the heroes probably stemmed from binge-reading the bundle, reading all three stories back-to-back. Taking a break probably would have been a good idea. That didn't stop from leaping into book four when I finished this set. :D While book two would work as a stand alone, number three has characters from the first two stories and would work best if you rad them first.

Concrete Evidence: 3 stars. Both leads drove me batty and they were liars and manipulators. They had sort of good reasons under the circumstances but they had a serious failure to communicate and lots of trust issues. The trust issues and lies were forgiven fat too easily, more groveling was needed, especially by the hero Lee. Still, there was heat between them, and they were mostly likable. The mysteries were well done, with lots of red herrings, & twists. Grant pulled me right in and kept me reading and I was ready to dive right into book two.

Body of Evidence: 3 stars. The leads were much more likable though Curt could be an ass. Lee from book 1 made an appearance but the book stands alone. It was a little weird reading this while the US and North Korea are so at odds right now as North Korea is an important part of the story. The story was originally published @5 years ago. It was eerily timely and had a particular relevance it wouldn't have had I read it a a different time. Also, there was some hot phone sex, and when they were in different cities, they talked on the phone every night and engaged in fantasy dates. It was a great way to further their relationship, and there was some awesome flirting. The story dragged a bit at times but I enjoyed the conspiracy aspect of it.

Witholding Evidence: 3 stars I freaking loved Trina. She was sassy, quick-witted, and had a spine. She could also be impulsive and stupid but not unforgivably so. She held her own with Keith who was a smart-ass and pushed her buttons. She gave as good as she got. There was a lot happening in this short novel and some aspects could have benefited from further development but overall it worked well.

First three books in Evidence series included in this bundle: Concrete Evidence, Body of Evidence, and the short novel Withholding Evidence.

I'm giving this bundle 3 but I would probably give the first two books in this bundle more stars if I had read them with some time between readings. The last short novel felt compressed and rushed. That one I would give 2.5 stars to in any circumstance.

First, the good: Rachel Grant is great at researching and writing about unusual occupations, which are interesting and not often seen in the romance genre--historians, researchers, scientists--she writes them all really well and I enjoy reading about their jobs as much as I do the romance. Her female protagonists are always fun to read, with great personalities that walk that line between independent and willing to bend for the sake of a relationship.

She also has a clear respect for the military and writes about men serving in the military with depth and a wonderful ability to delve into the myriad issues facing service men these days. Emphasis on the men--out of the six books I've read of Grant's only one woman in service has been featured, and she was CIA, not military.

BUT-- (here's the bad)--Grant tends to recycle storylines and plot points, which lead to all her books running together. It's almost always a man in the military and a female scientist or researcher of some kind. The bad buy is almost always after the girl, and the military man protects her. In EVERY single book I've read of Grants', the girl falls into the hands of who ever happens to be pursuing her. The last short novel in this bundle, it happens at the very end--I really held out hope that just ONCE the girl wouldn't get kidnapped by the bad guys. No such luck.

So as standalones, these are really fun, well-written novels. This is NOT the kind of author, however, that you can binge read. You will quickly tire of the same story over and over. The dicey situations that the female protagonists get themselves into are always original and fun to read about, but the bones of the story don't change from book to book, and that made this bundle hard to enjoy.

I bought the second bundle in this series (it was 99 cents how could I say no?!) but I will be sure to give myself a lengthy break between those books, because at the end of the day I really enjoy Rachel Grant's writing, but not all at once.

Intrigue, danger and romance

Phew. I loved these books. Strap in for the breakneck roller coaster rides of these romantic suspense tales. I fell directly into the stories on the first page and only looked up after the last word. They were all unputdownable. All of the unexpected plot twists made for a suspenseful mystery trying to guess what was going to happen next for the MCs and who the bad guys were. The stories all have a wonderful balance between the suspense and the swoony romance. Both are crucial to the ebb and flow of the story and this author does a phenomenal job of weaving together exhilarating action, palpable tension, plot twists, mystery, and red-hot romance. The books have a little bit of everything just like you would expect from this genre - sweet moments, strong friendships, spicy times, real life issues, imperfect characters, dangerous moments, mystery, uber protective men, secrets, painful pasts, evil actors, and love. These well written stories included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and captivating storylines. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.

Concrete evidence

Erica trained as an underwater archeologist but a terrible choice and an evil man last year destroyed her career and feeling of safety. She is now using her other degree and working at Talon & Drake while trying to rebuild her life, find redemption, and exact revenge on the man who destroyed her old life. Lee is under cover as an intern at Talon & Drake looking for the person selling ancient artifacts through the company. Erica is his supervisor at the company and also a suspect.

Body of evidence

Mara is an anthropologist who works for JPAC recovering the bodies of POW/MIA service members. While in North Korea recovering a body, she is accused of spying, arrested, convicted and sentenced to death. Curt is the US Attorney who is acting as the US Envoy who comes to North Korea and gets Mara released moments before her execution. Curt is also the attorney prosecuting Mara’s uncle, the former VP, for accepting bribes from the military contractor, Raptor. Curt intends to question Mara, deliver her to DC and then start the trial. Unfortunately, they soon end up running for their lives.

Withholding Evidence

Trina is a military historian that is researching events that happened five years ago in Somalia. Keith is a former SEAL who is on Trina’s interview list but he has not responded to her emails. When Trina shows up at Keith’s door asking about Somalia, the chemistry ignites and the danger kicks into high gear. I especially liked that every time one of them messed up they sought the other one out to apologize and make amends. It kept the romance angst to a minimum and was a nice mature way to show how a relationship works.

Night Owl

Jenna lives in small town Tamarack Alaska. She the caretaker for her dad and works in the local bar. She loves her town and never plans to leave. Brad works at the local Raptor training facility. Jenna has had a crush on Brad for three years but assumes he’s not interested. Brad is interested but has no desire to stay in this town so refuses to get involved. Until a visit to see a nearby great horned owl’s nest together changes everything.

What ever way you look the girls are in trouble and the boys here to rescue or is it the other way around

Concrete evidence, Erica underwater archiologist duped by Jake now he had her right where he wants her or so he thinks , Lee sent into the business was to find out who is selling artefacts on the black market , Grant has you twisting this way and that who to trust and who not Led plays the jester which he is far from. Falling head over heels for her but can he trust her. Loyalty trust theft danger a full rollercoaster and page turner.
Body of Eric. Mia archiologist and in the job of bringing the dead home from old war areas finds two bombs one broken then Roddy a raptor soldier kidnaps her then leavers her vulnerable in a jungle in North Korea she is captured as a spy and will face a firing squad unless the man on the front of a Times mag doesn't turn up soon. With back to a wall blindfolded she even heard them cocked their weapons then her hero arrives Curt Dominick from the public prosecutors office stands in front of her from then on it run duck dive hide. Someone wants her dead so much so they blow up a plane nearly killing her and Curt. He is prosecuting her beloved uncle and is trying to tell her he could be behind this , she can't believe that her best friend has told a who!e load of lies about her making her look more and more guilty. The chemistry between her and Curt is burning hot but he would loose his job and the case if he let that happen, you got to keep your wits about you as the pace is fast with more twists than a spring .
Withholding evidence, Trina inquisitive historian is given the job of fining out what happened in some of the war torn areas of the world and has to interview Keith to ask about his time in Samolia that's the start but by no means the end. Someone is trying to get military secrets from USA into the world to shame demean and show they revel in lies and cheating to make them look weak yes an Trina is smack in the middle of it all, it isn't helped by the fire flaring between her and Keith yet another much different story of running hiding cheating death not only to save the country but themselves too. Some secrets are best kept that way secret.
I highly recommend this set of books fun frightening and downright great

Intriguing! Compelling! Wonderful!!

I feel guilty about this box set. I was reading an anthology which had book 7 of this series. I loved Poison Evidence. So I looked through my collection of books. And what did I find? Evidence Series Box Set Volume 1--AND 2!! How did I have these and unread? I really wanted to know the backstory of all the happy, mad-in-love couples who were the close friends of the main characters in that book.

So I sat down and sometimes lay down, and read them all! In a week! It was WONDERFUL to have everyone there, all together, so I could refer back and forth to each book when I couldn't remember a certain happening. Each book has such a distinct story yet still manages to remain intriguing and true to the circumstances of the couple involved and the places of where their stories evolve.

I have a degree in Marine Biology and have worked and lived in many of the places serving as the locales or similar to these books-- Washington state (where I dove and did research in the Strait of Juan de Fuca for my degree), Papua New Guinea (where I lived on a research island, diving WWll ship and plane wrecks), and Alaska, (where I worked on the pipeline, learned to dive, and worked for NOAA). And I have to tell you, Rachel Grant has done her research and then some, because she NEVER EVER hits a false note in her story telling! Some of the people or situations may seem improbable, but believe me, they are NOT impossible! (Because I now live in Panama, after a number of years in Honduras, I know a number (maybe a few, maybe more than a few) of former (or maybe current) CIA, DEA, other alphabet group operatives that could probably tell similar stories-- or are asking themselves "how did that Grant woman get that mission information? I KNOW it is still classified!!"

I HATE when reviewers add "I can't wait for the next book". Lucky here because she has released the two box sets and has two or three books after that-- which I also read in the binge. And each book and each story is amazing, and intricately concocted. For now I am thrilled to have come across the Evidence world, and just sad I missed it when it first started 10 years ago!! Now I am diving into her other book worlds. Thank you, Rachel Grant, for all your stories!

Oh wow ... impressive to say the least. I did not expect what I found in the books that Rachel Grant wrote. I was incredibly intrigued and wow'd beyond expectation when I found out that these story lines were written with purpose and mimicked true stories with her own fictional takes on them. Once I finished Concrete Evidence, she had me.
I got done with the first three and ordered the next three right away. I cannot wait to see the story go on. Like another one of my favorite editors C.H.Lang, she keeps her characters throughout her books and twists the storyline to take you on a cool journey.
I was never really well versed in archeology, but, reading these books, I am intrigued to find out more. Thank you for that.
I cannot wait to see where her mind goes in the next volume that I am starting to read right now.

So darn good.

I absolutely loved this boxed book set, it was also priced just a dollar more than paying for just one book. This is a new author for me and I’m really hooked on her writing style. Loved staying on edge plus I really felt the romances. Loved being connected with the characters. Each story is told in his and her points of view with happy ever afters. I highly recommend this book and plan on reading the rest of this series.

History

A collection of stories with strong female leads. More action than one would expect when 'they' are historians or archaeologists. Plots are complicated and interesting and very modern and mention many world trouble spots. Very well written. I'll try to read Rachel's other evidence books.

Didn’t make it beyond first book in series

I quite liked the plot in Concrete Evidence but was this a mystery or porn book? Only finished to work out the ending, skipping all the sex scenes which distracted from the mystery

3.5 Stars I finished all three books and generally liked them. They're smart, sexy, suspenseful. Great characters & love interests. And I appreciate the accurate historical baseline for the stories. My only issue is that at times each of the stories seemed monotonous &/or repetitive.

I probably won't read these again, but I'll definitely read other books by Rachel Grant. I like her characters and think she has a lot of interesting & intelligent stories to tell.
