Waiting in the wings (The Afterlife Series #3) by Gina Ardito

What I really like about The Afterlife series is the way it challenges my imagination. Never before have I pictured life after death in this way, but since reading book one Eternally it is now the only view I have of the spirit world.
In this instalment we meet Osiris, who after living many lives, yet not learning what he must, he finally decided to end his own life which landed him as a long time employee of the Afterlife’s Children’s Services. It is his job to watch over anyone under the age of twenty-one who is terminally ill, and guide them to the other side. A sad and often difficult position, Osiris is desperate to learn his lessons and move on, the problem being he feels the goal posts are often moved and he struggles to understand what the Elders want of him. Xavia is the councillor assigned to help Osiris become a better soul, her reward is to leave the realm of the dead and move on herself, so the task for both is just as important. Things begin to change when Osiris is given a new ward, Alex, who he is able to spend more time with before she dies, and share some touching conversations with. Osiris becomes fond of the little girl and her young wisdom often leaves him dumbfounded.
I love Gina Ardito’s work, her writing is fluid and her story telling is so natural I forget I am reading so am pulled effortlessly into the world she has created. I highly recommend all of her books to every reader!
