After returning to the island following his lost week in Glasgow, Leger finds Hugh and Annabella preparing for a murder-mystery themed opening night, much to his delight. But, on learning that Annabella is to play the victim, he is not so keen. Once the lights go out, Annabella is found lying on the floor. All the humans assume it is part of the game but Leger and the other animals know the truth. She really was pushed from the stairs.
It should have been an easy task for Leger as Amber witnessed the attack and was desperate to relate exactly what happened, but when he also assumed it was part of the act Amber disappeared with the island bad-boy, Massingham. Now he and Ginger must search for clues, as well as Amber, in order to unmask the person who pushed Annabella. With only a missing false nail and a lot of uneasy vibes to go on, this could be Leger's most puzzling case yet.

Lacey Dearie is a writer from Ayrshire, Scotland. She has lived her whole life in the Ayrshire countryside and sets many of her stories in this area, or in the places where her extended family live.

On leaving school in 1995, she chose an entrepreneurial career path, which later led to a job in book-keeping before working for over a decade as a paralegal. She also ran a small perfumery for a short time and has worked as a mystery shopper since 2007, partly because she likes the glamour of being a spy, although it's actually super boring and there's a lot of paperwork involved.

She returned to study in her 30s, undertaking a BA in Arts & Humanities with the Open University in Scotland, where she gained a distinction in creative writing. She has also studied Comparative and World Literature with Harvard's online program, Harvard X and History of Religion, specifically magical beliefs in the Middle Ages with the Universitat de Barcelona.

Since 2002, she has written for a variety of publications, both in print and online. She is the author of 39 cat sleuth novellas, 2 chick-lit novels, 3 stories about sexually active foods and a blog named Rock Paper Spirit. She has also written a Chaka Demus and Pliers tribute musical, just to pass the time.

She has been an associate member of the Cat Writers Association since 2018.

Another cute Leger the cat detective story. Overall a good solid story, and I didn't really notice the shortness of it until I realized it was missing something that I thought might be neat to "see" unfold.

Leger, Bob, Lily, and their humans are all back at their hotel, for an opening weekend murder mystery event. Joining them are various guests, Tony and his doggie, Ginger and Amber and their humans. Watching them are the local cats. Plus the four Lithuanian women who worked on building the hotel.

Several of the cats run off into the night, mostly Amber and a new tomcat to the island, Massingham. Small slight adventure there, though mostly outside the frame of the page. There's this "bad vibe" that Massingham apparently gives off, noticeable to Lily and Leger, at least.

Most of the cats, humans, dogs, and action, though, remain at the hotel. Wherein the event that I thought might be neat to see unfold got interrupted. The play pretend murder mystery weekend almost became a real murder mystery weekend (or, I should say, became an actual attempted murder mystery weekend). So that kind of put a damper on the whole pretend murder mystery play.

Not sure what all else to note. All I've really done is ramble, again, instead of review. Was nice to see the kitties again. Also glad the mysteries in this series haven't tended to involve death.

Long running mysteries that include murder in each work always tend to end up seeming to be a little too shallow/empty/blasé about death. I'd stopped reading the Cat Who mysteries because the main human character just kind of shrugged when yet another person died near him. Waved his hands in the general direction. "Oh well, my cats howling, means another person had died *shrug, rolls over back to sleep*." And the mystery ended up being solved by others. Yet another person had their back-story given, only to be killed. To have a reason for the series.

Kind of went off topic there. Was just a mention of how murders seem to be the main bread and butter of mystery series, so I'm glad to find one that doesn't focus on having random people battered to death for the characters in the series to glance at and shrug about.

Deliberate or accidental - the truth will be sought

Terrific short coffee break read with our cat detective. A party to celebrate the opening of the Inn is cut short when his human is found at the bottom of the stairs. Did she fall or was she pushed? He is determined to find out. Using his friends the game is afoot. A gentle read that has a terrific view of how cats view their humans and each other. Well worth a read.
