Lovely book! Miss S loved it! Gotta know though if the author or illustrator got the idea for the lion head drinking fountain from the Tulsa Zoo?

"I love to build a snowman / On freezing winter days. / But when the sun is bright and warm / My snowman melts away. / There's nothing but a puddle / When my snowman disappears. / If only he were magic / And could stay with me all year!" So begins this third picture-book devoted to the imaginary adventures of the eponymous snowmen. In this installment, the boy narrator imagines all the activities he could share with his snowman, all the year round, if snowmen didn't melt...

Like its two predecessors, Snowmen at Night and Snowmen at Christmas , Snowmen All Year pairs an engaging and imaginative tale told in rhyme with bright, colorful artwork that grabs the reader/listener's attention. Also like its predecessors, there are hidden images in the artwork here, that young children will enjoy searching for. Recommended to children who enjoyed the first two Snowmen books, as well as to anyone searching for fun read-aloud picture-books in rhyme.

Snowmen All Year is a children's picture book written by Caralyn Buehner and illustrated by Mark Buehner and it is the third book in the Snowmen series. It is a delightful story about a boy's imagination about playing with his lovable snowman year-round.

Caralyn Buehner's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and lyrical. With simple rhymes the little boy dreams up situation that he and his snowman would do throughout the year. Mark Buehner's paintings delight in showing off the joyfully absurd situations and rapport between the boy and his friend, never more so than when the snowman does a nosedive into a backyard pool.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward. The narrative tells a story about a gap-toothed boy's gleefully silly fantasies about playing with his lovable snowman year-round. On a stormy evening, the boy and his snowman play chess and on Halloween, they go trick-or-treating and the like for each festive day of the year.

All in all, Snowmen All Year is a wonderful and imaginative story about a boy and how he would spend time with his snowman year round.

Third in a series of snowmen adventures, Snowmen All Year imagines the shared activities a boy and his snowman would enjoy were this the “magic snow (t)hat will not disappear, (a)nd this snowman be the one (t)o stay with me all year!” The cheery, colorful oil and acrylic illustrations make concrete the non-wintry activities of the boy and snowman, from flying kites to trick or treating. Each lively two-page painting is filled with action and contains two ducks, a Tyrannosaurus Rex, a rabbit, a cat and at least one hidden snowman for children to search for. The book is designed to appeal to young children and hold their attention through multiple readings. The rhyming text may not win awards for lyric subtlety, but successfully engages children in imagining a yearlong play date with a snowman best friend. A good review on Amazon indicates this snowman book's illustrations are less pleasing to adults than the first two in the series. Likewise it's poetry is less evocative. However that review and several others indicate that this is a favorite of little kids.

I recently found this on a list of books to recommend to kids (of various ages) who are obsessed with Disney's Frozen. Of course this example focuses on those who are big fans of Olaf (and in my opinion, how can you not be? ...even for those who are just a tad sick of everything else Frozen!). :)

Imagine the fun you could have if your snowman or snowwoman didn't melt! My favorite was...
On sunny days I'd teach him how
To dive and how to swim.
...with a fun drawing of a snowman diving into the pool, goggles and all!

This would be a fun book to serve as a writing prompt for students.

This is probably my favorite book in the Snowmen series. The rhythm is fantastic, and it makes for a super fun read aloud in the class or library.

Storytime focus: phonemic awareness, classification (with time of year)

Best for 2s and 3s, toddler/preschool storytime, or family storytime.

Horn Book (Spring 2011)

On the chilly heels of Snowmen at Night and Snowmen at Christmas comes this fantasy, courtesy of a boy who imagines an entire year spent playing with a magically unmelting snowman. The visual variety (settings include a zoo, the beach, and an amusement park) is effective in helping to camouflage the occasional uninspired rhyme.

Kirkus Reviews (October 1, 2010)

A little boy who loves building snowmen but doesn't so much love seeing them melt imagines a magic snowman who "could stay with me all year!" They'd fly kites together, ride the roller coaster, watch the Fourth of July fireworks, camp out in the woods, etc. Caralyn Buehner's rhyming four-line stanzas put boy and snowman together in a variety of situations that Mark Buehner's bright, oil-over-acrylic paintings realize with mild whimsy. It is funny to see the snowman's mittened hands holding up a jar of fireflies, and the spread of the boy burying the snowman in the sand at the beach will elicit chuckles. But this outing lacks the magic of the pair's Snowmen at Night (2002) almost entirely, coming alive only on the very last page, which suggests that perhaps it's time for this franchise to melt. (Picture book. 4-7)

Publishers Weekly (November 1, 2010)

In their third Snowmen title, the Buehners portray a gap-toothed boy's gleefully silly fantasies about playing with his lovable snowman year-round ("On summer evenings in the dark/ We'd chase some fireflies,/ Or sleep out in the quiet woods/ Beneath the starry skies"). On a stormy evening, the boy and his snowman play chess (the snowman's pieces are all miniature snowmen), and on Halloween, they go trick-or-treating (no costume required for the snowman). Mark Buehner's paintings delight in showing off the joyfully absurd situations and rapport between the boy and his friend, never more so than when the snowman does a nosedive into a backyard pool. School Library Journal (December 1, 2010)

PreS-Gr 1-"I love to build a snowman/On freezing winter days./But when the sun is bright and warm/My snowman melts away./There's nothing but a puddle/When my snowman disappears./If only he were magic/And could stay with me all year!" With these words, a gap-toothed boy begins an odyssey with his carrot-nosed friend, teaching him to swim and to fly a kite, visiting the amusement park and the zoo, playing at the beach, watching fireworks, and so on. Caralyn Buehner's rhyming text-only occasionally bumpy-sets the scene nicely, while Mark Buehner paints the scenery in gorgeously luminous oils and acrylics. With changing perspectives, places, and details that show off the illustrator's skill and imagination, every spread explodes with glee. Readers will explore the pictures again and again to take up the trademark challenge: find the hidden creatures in each scene. This book is about a little boy's dream that his snowman would not melt when the weather got warmer. The boy tells about what he would do with his snowman if he could keep his snowman all year long.

I thought this book was really fun. This book takes what a lot of kids hope for and puts it into a rhyming tone. I also really enjoyed the illustrations in the book.

I would use this book in a kindergarten class. This book would be good to use in a unit on winter. I would have the students draw what they would do with their snowman if they could have their snowman all year.

This book was so cute and adorable a boy imagines a snowman who could stay alive all year and this boy says he would teach him how to fly a kite. Go swimming at the pool, and ride a roller coaster together and all sorts of other things.

The pictures are really adorable and children you'll be enchanted by this story.

If you love olaf and snowman you'll love this book it has the same cuteness and magical feeling you get when seeing olaf.

Snowmen All Year is a little different than the other "Snowmen" books. Rather than dreaming the different ways snowmen live and celebrate, in Snowmen All Year the boy dreamer imagines how he would live and celebrate
If only he were magic
And could stay with me all year!"
Snowmen All Year has the wonderful rhymes, happy, bright illustrations and, of course, hidden objects to hunt.

Such a cute story! I love that the illustrator has hidden things to find in each painting, such as a t-Rex, a bunny, extra snowmen, and more. My five year old and I love looking for them. Some are more obvious than others; some we still haven’t found yet. 😉

It’s fun to imagine all the fun things(although many are impractical) to do with your special snowman friend.

Colorful and bright illustrations. The typical rhyming text in verse.

I really enjoyed this. The illustrations are super cute and adorable and colorful. It's well-written, and has a really cute idea and story. I love the concept of a snowman getting to survive the entire year, not just in the snow. What a great idea! What kid hasn't experienced the sadness that comes along with seeing their snowman melt when the weather warms? This captures the wish kids have to get to see their snowman make it. This is the best in the entire series I've read so far, and I've read a couple others. The most charming part is that it tells a complete story and covers so many different activities throughout all the seasons. It was especially charming seeing them trick-or-treating together.

The boy wishes for a magic snow and for his snowman to stay with him all year. He thinks up all these activities he wants to do with him. Flying kites, searching for pirate treasure in a makeshift ship, going to the zoo, having a birthday party, riding roller coasters at the amusement park, watching fireworks, playing chess, swimming, catching fireflies, camping, going to the beach, and trick-or-treating.

My favorite pages were the ones with them sitting by the pond with a big crowd of people watching these pretty fireworks, playing chess (the snowman has his cute little mittens cupping his face and he has snow-man chess figurines. Adorable!), them at dusk holding a jar of fireflies with the sunset clouds, and the trick-or-treaters with the snowman with a cowboy hat and sheriff's star badge. All of the images were so pretty and vivid.

The only problem I had with this were those hidden images! It says there's a cat, rabbit, two ducks, and a T-rex on every page but I could not find most of them. The T-rex was the hardest. If I found a few, then there were a couple I couldn't find. I think only one or two pages did I actually find all the shapes. It became really distracting and took away from the story and the text, trying to find these hidden images. It felt like an I Spy book and it didn't need to be. Though it is a neat concept to have the same images hidden throughout every page in this whole series, it takes away from the actual book and turns it into something else. I'd forget what I had read or where I was in the story and have to go back and read, because I'd been spending so much time staring at the pages trying to find all the images. It would be better if the images were more cohesive to the story, like if it was just snowmen that were hidden. I don't like the T-rex at all because it's so random.

I've read Snowmen at Night and Snowmen at Christmas in this series.
I only rated them two stars each; not sure if it was my mood then or what, but I seemed to have enjoyed this one much more than the others.

I loved the illustrations; they were adorable. Particularly the snowman blowing out his birthday candle. I loved the page with the fireworks. The rhymes were also cute.

It's a cute, fanciful idea, to think of a snowman being around all year, and what kids would do with them during each season. They went to the zoo, amusement park, watched fireworks, went swimming, caught fireflies, and went camping. The page where he took him to the beach and buried him in the sand was cute. He also took him trick-or-treating.

I couldn't find all the hidden images on every page. Some I had to give up on, I'm embarrassed to say.
This was a cute, fun read, made so by the lively images.
This can be read during any season, because it covers the whole year.

A wonderful summer twist on a snowman story! Such a unique concept that will certainly captivate young readers as they watch a snowman go swimming, sail a kite, visit the zoo, watch fireworks, play chess with little snowmen pieces, and even blow out birthday candles! A witty tale with captivating illustrations. Children and adults alike will be delighted by the beautifully rendered pictures showcasing family summer activities and joyous expressions on every page. This is in my "save forever and pass down to family" collection, along with the other books in Caralyn and Mark Buehner's collection: Snowmen at Night, Snowmen at Christmas, and Snowmen at Work. My favorite summer snowman story and it will be yours, too!
