[Siren Ménage Everlasting: Erotic Historical Ménage a Trois Romance, M/F/M, HEA]
Gillis MacDougal, cursing at being captured and tossed into his enemy's prison pit, has a newly captured lad dropped on him. Though he can't escape, he will ensure the boy is freed. He then discovers the lad has wit, determination…and breasts.
Feisty tomboy Fiona, bastard daughter of Laird Menzies, knows what her captors will do when they discover she's not the heir worth gold. The stranger sharing her dark prison arouses her for the first time in her life. With nothing to lose, she begs him to ensure she does not die a virgin.
Fiona helps Gillis escape and they meet with his brother Angus. As they have nothing, they'd wanted to find a wealthy wife, but fall for the penniless, sensual wildcat full of determination and spirit. Gillis handfasts with Fiona to bind her to them before arriving at Inverlochy Castle. Laird Cameron, however, has other ideas as to who should marry the attractive young woman…
I feel like I need a meme here. You know that one with the old guy drinking a glass of liquor?
"I don't always read smut....
But when I do, it needs to be smut with a plot."
(You know the one)
Anyway, the truth is I don't think Ms. Butler gets enough credit. This was the first menage series I ever read, and honestly, this one and her bride train series (which I actually do like a bit better) are the only ones I've found that are worth reading. They're good. Not just smutty sexy times good. But, 'I like the characters and the plot is well done and well researched' good. Seriously.
Of course you'll find tons and tons of dirty, awesome sex in these books, but you also find strong women, yummy men, and storylines that are interesting and make sense. Even if menage is not really your thing, I think you'll like Ms. Butler's books. (As long as you like things super steamy anyway). There are some cheeseball lines here and there, but generally, I think everything is extremely well done.
The only problems I have with this series are actually publisher issues. First of all, the covers are terrible! Super cheesy gone wrong. (And the people on the second book in each pair are different from the first, so it's impossible to tell they're about the same couple.) Honestly, these need to be redone pronto. Just put two super chiseled chests with a little kilt action and you'd be square. No faces or backgrounds needed. Have you seen the Play by Play series covers? Do something like that. Yum! Second, these books should never have been split in two. Each book in the series comes in a kind of Part 1 - Part 2 split, but neither part really makes sense on its own. If you read this one (Captive Bride) for instance, you have to read the next one (Captive Love) to get the whole story. I'm not sure why this decision was made, but it was a bad one. Put them back together!
This book in particular introduces our first MacDougal pair - Angus and Gillis - and their eventual wife - Fiona. The setting up of the series is done really well with this book. We learn why the MacDougals share wives and why so many brothers were fostered around the Highlands (which, as the series progresses, gives us, the readers, the opportunity to travel around the Highlands and meet lots of great characters, too). This isn't my favorite group in the series - the guys are great, but sometimes Fiona is a bit irritating - but I do like the book enough that I've read it at least handful of times.
Overall, I think Ms. Butler has done a great job. This was an enjoyable read, and one I'm sure I'll get to again.
The sex was hot. The story was interesting. It was well written. Someone else said it feels like this book is missing an ending and I agree there was no big reveal at the end about Fiona's mother or a confrontation with her father or meeting the Fraser's. I feel like if some of that had been addressed it would have been complete. Even so I did enjoy this and it is the first highland erotica I have read and I do enjoy highland themes and erotica so I will be reading more of the series.
First book in the Highland Menage series by Reece Butler. Fiona was raised as a feisty tomboy with nothing to lose but her life. When she and Gillis MacDougal escape a horrid fate he proposes to protect her, with his brother Angus part of the deal. Why shouldn't she experience pleasure from a pair of warriors? But the local laird has other plans for her...
It reads like it is. It's erotica more than just romance, though the dialogue is done rather well. It is well written, but I feel like we are missing the ending. I wanted the characters' reactions to the revelation and some type of confrontation. Still, if you want a Scottish historical erotica, this is a good book to go with.
I enjoyed this book. I love a good ménage romance and add to it some beefy highlanders and I'm in erotic heaven. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
