Do any of us truly know who we are until we’re tested?
Having escaped Heidelberg’s gallows, the occult world threatens Faust’s life and livelihood once again, when his new patron’s son turns out to be a faerie changeling.
Faust is sent to do the impossible — take the faerie changeling, find the stolen human child, and force the faerie prince responsible to swap them back. But Faust’s patron has political enemies keen to use this monstrous event as an excuse to take everything for which he’s worked. Summoned to appear before the powerful Vehmic Court, Faust’s patron faces execution if he can’t produce his human son at his trial.
With agents of the Vehmic Court close behind, and capricious faeries ahead, Faust, Wagner, and the young changeling Lorenz — necromancer, werewolf, and faerie — face questions about their own identities, and their places in an ever more complex and dangerous world.
Changelings, Faeries, and Faustus: Why Book Two Hooked Me
Intrigued by Faustus's journey, I picked up the second book in the series and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially getting to explore more of the world it's set in. I really liked the inspiration drawn from fairy changeling tales, it made for a fascinating read.
Faust returns with Wagner for another adventure rushing through Renaissance fantasy Europe, and it's a belter! Fast paced, well written, funny, dramatic and stuffed with action, suspence and intrigued. A perfect meeting of fantasy, historical mystery, magic and action, all told through a Guy Ritchie style lense. Great fun to read and genuinely gripping, this is another excellent book by Mark Lawford. Along side all of this The Second Son has genuine heart. It's a romp that will grip you throughout and the pacing is brilliant but it is the heart and soul of the story that will really capture you. A really great book.
