I read sentient object books when I need to recover from something dark or emotional or when I’m in a reading slump. They are generally quick, silly, spicy and WTH! Those are the criteria I use for judging.
This one is quick, only 25 pages. So it met that criteria.
For silly, the whole time I was reading I kept hearing a School House Rock short in my head. I expect cringy dialogue in a sentient object romance but I felt like this was leaning way too hard into the “Spirit of America” and “America 250” propaganda.
For spice, it let me down. It was just short of fade to black. I was really underwhelmed and wanted so much more from the spice.
Finally, the WTH factor, it was there, but not in the way I wanted. I felt like I had sat through family dinner with those relatives that wear a lot of red hats. I don’t want to assume anything about the author’s political leanings, but honestly it is hard not to. I feel like I need to take a shower and not because it was hot and spicy.
I’m giving it 3 stars because of the low number of reviews it has, but that is really generous.
A parasocial relationship with a sparkler. This was odd. All I’m thinking is… It’s the thickness of a skewer stick. Queen lets not be touching that dyed wood stick anywhere near our areas. I’m good. No thanks.
