Eight months pregnant, I stood in the doorway of my husband’s office and watched him kiss another woman across his desk. Her lipstick stained his face. Their clothes were undone. There was no mistaking what had happened.
The thermos slipped from my hands as tears streamed down my cheeks.
Eight months pregnant. Twelve years of marriage. Two children waiting for us at home. And my entire life shattering in a single second.
Then a savage pain tore through my body.
Contractions. Premature labor.
But I ran, ignoring the pain and the desperate shouts of the man who had betrayed me.
Because some betrayals cannot be forgiven. Some wounds never fully heal. And after what I had witnessed, I knew one terrible
This book made me ugly cry! Possible Spoilers ahead, along with a heavy dose of rage
📍TW: there are on-page descriptions of a stillborn baby. 📍 📍emotional and physical cheating with a kiss and thigh rubs (no D touching V) 📍
This book was a quick read. Personally, I feel like it was way too quick for the subject matter it dealt with. YMMV
The heroine and hero have been married a while. They are in love and have two children, ages 7 and 5. The heroine is 8 months pregnant. The hero is a neurosurgeon. He’s been withdrawn from the heroine for a few weeks. Works late, watches/checks his phone too much…ya know? All the typical 🚩🚩
Anyway, she goes to deliver a folder at his work that she knows he accidentally left. Standing outside his office, she hears laughter. Dun dun dun She opens the door. The hero’s coworker, Olivia, is sitting on his desk and he’s standing between her spread legs. They are doing some hot and heavy kissing. HIS HANDS ARE ON OW’s thighs.
The heroine drops a cup or something she’s holding, and her hubby looks up like 😱. DERP! The OW smirks. The heroine’s stomach is wracked with pain so she takes off. We are told the husband comes out, buttoning up his shirt. He’s trying to get the heroine to stop so he can explain. 😇 His hands and tongue accidentally fell into OW.
The heroine tells a driver to take her to the hospital bc she’s in a lot of pain. She makes it there, but the baby is stillborn. She is wrecked! She won’t let her husband come in the room.
She gets released, goes home and gets her two kids, then moves back in with her parents. She’s depressed and sad; her kids are depressed and confused.
The hero does try to talk with her but she makes it clear that she hates him and it’s his fault their baby is dead.
Then the most aggravating part. The hero’s mom starts coming over all the time. She’s like “help him” or “this OW is trying to get with him and won’t leave him alone” or “help him get sober” Seriously, grandma would come over begging the heroine to help him because he was drinking and starting to lose his job. Mom would bring up OW’s social media accounts and show how the OW would end up at the bar with him. Ummmm, ma’am, your son called her to come to the bar! Be so F’ing for real. (BTW grandma is a nice lady. She wants the heroine back with her son. I mention this bc at first, I wondered if she was trying to keep them apart lol)
So the story- OW has been obsessed with the hero for a bit. She started texting him, and at first he would kind of play it off when she flirted. Then he started to flirt back. Nothing ever happened until that day the heroine caught them. Surrre. OW set that situation up, and it was *just a kiss*
Except.:…why was he having to button up his shirt? Why were his hands on her thighs? Why was his tongue down her throat? Why was the hero distant with his wife WEEKS before? Why was he consumed with his phone? Why, after the heroine left him, did he remain in contact with the OW for over a month? Why was he calling OW to come join him at the bar? Why was he letting OW hang all over him? Why didn’t he block her, especially knowing that OW was bashing the heroine all over social media?
The OW is bashing the heroine online. She’ll also show pictures where she goes to comfort the hero when he’s drunk. Let’s be for real- the hero was calling her. She wasn’t just showing up. My guess is he’s excusing this in his head by saying “since my wife left me anyway- might as well go for it” BUT we are never told what happens AFTER the OW quits recording. Does she just sit there while he continues to drink? 😂😂 Where does he go afterwards? Is OW “helping” him? This needed to be explained way more.
The grandma brings the hero’s phone to the heroine so she can read the texts between hero and OW. 😂😂 That’s so we can see that OW chased him and he resisted until HE. JUST. COULDN’T. ANYMORE. wtf? Like I would believe any of that. Text messages can be erased. Anyway, does it even matter because the hero was still calling OW to come see him at the bar at least a month after his wife left?
Eventually, the hero turns some stuff in about paperwork and the OW loses her job. OW was some boiling bunny crazy. Yep!
The heroine is basically forced back into the hero’s orbit when their 7-year-old son gets sick. And bc grandma will just not stfu and stay out of their business. Grandma totally guilt-tripped the heroine into “saving” the hero. 🙇♀️🙇♀️🙇♀️ The kids did too.
The heroine kept telling us the reader and her hero that she still doesn’t forgive him, EXCEPT she ends up pregnant again by him, I think 10 months later. It’s an HFN. He only stays with them over the weekends.
I was just shocked. I NEEDED some tequila shots.

My rating was hard. I went back and forth but ultimately decided on one star. That was totally based on the plot and ending. It was absolutely awful. The writing was fine. There are a few minor issues, but nothing that took away from this gawd-awful plot. The ONLY thing that could’ve saved this was if the hero fell into a tank of acid.
Let me start by saying I read another book by this author and hated it just about as much as I hated this one! I had hoped that this book would change my opinion but it only solidified what I already knew…the author gives cheating husbands another chance at the COST OF THEIR AGGRIEVED WIVES!
**SPOILERS**
The wife has two children at home and another on the way! She goes to see her husband and she catches him kissing another woman. The woman is smug, she knows what she just did! The wife flees, but because of the infidelity and the stress she loses her baby, a son. She hates her husband (rightly so) she takes the kids to her parents. They hold the funeral and she’s so angry. The husband begs her to return, he fires the “mistress” but the other woman isn’t done. She paints the wife as unstable. She posts photos of herself holding the drunken husband, telling the world she is supporting him after his collapse because his wife stole the kids. The wife is furious but doesn’t do anything about it (uh why not?) she doesn’t even defend herself. The husbands mother begs to let her son see the kids. The wife eventually allows visitation. After the husband fires the other woman the wife thaws. She allows the husband back into their lives. The book ends with them back together and expecting another child (gross…like you’re just substituting the child you lost with a new kid).
**THOUGHTS/OPINIONS**
This book is heinous for a lot of reasons. First the husband claims he loves the wife, that it was just a moment of weakness because surgery had made him tired…are you kidding me?! The OW had been texting him for months!! She had insinuated herself into his life, and he allowed it! It doesn’t matter how tired he was…tired doesn’t make you betray your loving wife! Secondly, he didn’t fire the OW immediately, yeah yeah he built a case, but it took like a month, and during that time the OW was systematically destroying his wife’s reputation and HE NEVER SPOKE UP FOR HER!! His reputation meant more to him than his grieving wife’s. He let her be torn apart in public, never admitting or taking credit for his part…the fact that he betrayed his wife, got caught, and inadvertently killed his own child with his selfishness!! Now, only the wife. She had every right to be furious! But she doesn’t file for divorce…are you freaking kidding me?! She allows her a-hole husband access to the kids, the man inadvertently caused the death of their third child!!! She didn’t fight back at all! The public crucified her and she got mad, but she didn’t get even she didn’t even correct the gossip mongers! She should’ve torn the two cheaters apart! She should’ve stool up for herself, told the world what they did, how he caused the death of his own child!!! But she said nothing! So what if she was angry, what good does fury do if you don’t release it at the intended targets? The wife was pitiful! I know she wasn’t supposed to be written as pitiful, but that is how she was characterized! She left, so what! She did nothing after she left but be mad. Being mad doesn’t give results! She was pitiful and even pathetic! Then the worst stuff…the book doesn’t show the OW ruined, or publicly correct how the public feels about the wronged wife! Nothing happens to the scheming OW except that she gets fired…so what!!! Okay maybe it’ll be hard for her to get a job…but again, so what! The world needed to know what kind of woman she was, and the public needed to turn on her! And then…the wife takes the husband back?! Are you kidding me now?!!! She takes the lying, cheating a-hole back?!!! Eeew! And…she has another baby with him…like, let’s just replace our dead baby with another kid! This book was monstrous! I’m thoroughly sickened! I’ll never read another book by this author again! She has no idea how to craft a cheating narrative!
I have never read such a tragic scene, scenes I should say, for a long time. I avoid cheating stories like the plague. I can do a little emotional betrayal, maybe ow drama, but no cheating. At first I thought he had sex with the skank but then it says it was kissing. Passionate kissing but I don't know. She was still around him for a month so who knows. But I do believe that having your child stillborn after your wife witnessed the betrayal would pretty much put me off kissing or touching anyone ever again. I felt her sorrow, her grief, her rage, her total devastation in this novel. I felt like I lived it with her. It was brutal. That's why I gave it four stars. Because I was thinking in my head, before I even read the line, the same words she was saying. I wanted him to fail. I wanted him to suffer. I wanted his pain to be ten times worse than her pain and I was living in that book for awhile. I was sobbing, my heart was racing and honestly I was angry with her. my husband came home, saw my face, saw my Kindle and turned back around. I also felt the ebbing of her emotions after the problems that happened. It was like God threw everything at her, all at once, and it was awful. So many emotions. I feel drained. The ending was good but I can't say that it felt like sunshine and rainbows and unicorns shooting stars out their behind, but it was real. It was grounded and then the cycle of life goes on, in spite of the pain. Just touched me. First time I think I read this author but I will read more as long as there is no physical cheating. I mean this was borderline for me and I made it through. I need to go read The Spanish Husband by Lynne Graham now as a palette cleanser. I don't want to have nightmares. But boy did this book scare me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
At the beginning when she hated him so much, why didn’t she seek legal advice to protect her and her children’s interest financially? He could have filed for the marital assets and also declared her as unstable, so he could get custody of the two children. Olivia could have won everything if Russell thought he really cared for her. Thank goodness he didn’t love her and realized it.
This was a sad story of betrayal and loss. The storyline was good and the characters believable. It's the mistakes that ruin it for me. Russell says his mom will meet him at the zoo, then his mom is in the car. Did her parents live in a house or apartment? There was a hallway, then there wasn't. Small details, but they put me off.
I enjoyed the story. Amazing plot full of angst and heartbreak. Alina and Russel have been married for 12 years and had 2 children and one on the way. The last thing Alina expected was to find her husband kissing another woman. Alina's life imploded and her life and future as she knew it would be irrevocably altered. I would have liked to have Russel' POV Nonetheless, highly recommended
Brutal beginning. The angst in those scenes is why I’m rounding up in the stars. But I think the aftermath was over the top considering it was only a kiss. Poor kids! The h didn’t sugarcoat anything for them lol It also felt rushed; the end was abrupt.
This book showed as one that may interest me so I gave it a shot. It's about a marriage that breaks. The other woman who deals in smoke and mirrors, manipulation and a hidden agenda. If you like betrayals, this is the one. If you need the grovel to redemption, you'll be left disappointed.
Looking at the front cover, you would have expected the story to be about a man walking out on wife. That is not what the story is. She catches him kissing another woman in his office, and then she runs out with traumatic onset of labor and catastrophic loss. Look at the picture on the front. Can you see the whisper of anything like that?
I have never seen such morally repugnant characters that weren’t intended. Russell was a terrible man, terrible father, and an even worse husband. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree because his mother was just and disgusting. There is no value in the first 80% of the book and the redemption was so awful it’s comical. I will never read anything by this author because it feels like I was being indoctrinated into a cult of all around bad characters. DON’T READ IF EXPECTING HARD EARNED REDEMPTION.
Spoilers* The husband cheated point blank period there is no gray area. After he cheats resulting in causing his wife of 12 years to miscarriage their 3rd child he becomes an alcoholic because he can’t deal with the fallout from his actions. He doesn’t think about his living kids or the one that he caused the death of. He was given visitation but instead he turned into an alcoholic. He continues to associated with his mistress and allows her to slander his still wife.
The mother-in-law might be the worse character ever written. She continuously guilts the wife with her baby not even dead a month because she can’t deal with her own son’s acts in real time. She has other options but she cried to the wife whose dead child is not ever cold in the ground despite the winter season.
The wife was made to believe that her “HATRED” was ruining her child, not the cheating alcoholic father. All the consequences continued to be placed on the wife even the husband’s alcoholism. The husband made every single choice with his eyes wide open but he didn’t get half the blame he was coddled.
The redemption is so bad it’s comical. He starts by trying to excuse his lack of restraint by saying he was tired with work and home. But when that doesn’t land he cries and never gives an adequate answer to why he cheated. He was a weak, egotistical coward who did not deserve redemption because he didn’t do the work.
This is the first book of this Author i have read and tbh, i wouldn’t read another. If i forget the subject matter and think only about the writing; i found it repetitive, confusing and full of plot holes. A few chapters in, i had thought i may be reading a chapter previously read! Frequently used the same language or same paragraphs and i couldn’t stand this. Confusing moments where wife finally agreed with MIL to supervised visits with the children and father.. but it never happened?? later we see him begging for the opportunity to see them?? Husbands first visit with his children is to the zoo with his mother supervising - writer states that after the dad picks up his kids he tells his wife he will be meeting his mother at the zoo, only when the wife talks of them driving away - the MIL is in the front of the car?? Anyway, there were lots of these moments for me. I felt like the story needed a good proof read & editing before making it available to readers. Just to touch on the story… did anyone not feel upset with the way the mother was alienating her children in regards to their father (despite his betrayal towards her) ? She was singlehandedly responsible for their emotional spiral and failed spectacularly in providing them emotional support, she demonised him to the children. I just couldn’t stand this book. Badly written and none of the characters had any redeeming qualities.
I concede the fact that this was really well thought out. More, it was realistic.
Alina was the person the story flowed through; she was the one who absorbed most of the suffering - her hurt & pain over betrayal, experiencing traumatic pain and anguish after helplessly, through no wrongdoing of her own, losing what should have been her third child, and grieving, alone, trying to parent her other children while her husband fell apart, nearly losing his position and reputation completely. What was most obscenely unfair was how Olivia, the narcissistic, cruelly manipulative physician who only looked at and desired Alina's husband, the reknown surgeon, and his life and family without Alina in it.
Sordid, heartbreaking drama, but a brilliant piece of writing that was emotionally gripping and very realistic in all the varying phases of grief, despair, abhorrence, and eventual acceptance of continuing life for the sake of their children. That was the clincher. The kids left behind - almost overlooked because both parents were hurting and coping - or not - in whatever ways they could, until they were made aware again of Max and Annie. Harsh, brutal, and, in the end, hopefully lovely. Five stars.
Cheating = h wants to surprise the h with lunch at his work. She is the one surprised by walking in on the H and OW in passionate embrace. h runs off and goes straight to hospital as the trauma from seeing the H cheating has forced her into early labor. h delivers her son sleeping. There is nothing in this world that would make me forgive this...but it's a book so onward.
h sees H with OW = see above
OW drama = OW bad mouths the h to others and online. OW is in love with the H and actively pursues him, H likes the attention and hero worship. OW is smug about the h walking in on them. Comeuppance? OW gets fired and eventually gets in trouble legally after the H documents all her misdoings at work.
Grovel = H immediately grovels but h wants nothing to do with it, for many months. H grovels through word and deed. After about almost a year, the H and h hook up and of course it results in pregnancy. Cue reconciliation.
3 1/2 stars. This is a quick but intense read (137 pages). Be sure to check the trigger warnings. The H is a neurosurgeon. The h is on mat leave as she is right months pregnant. They have two children and have been married for twelve years. She feels her husband slipping away, late nights, early mornings. She goes to his office with tea, ginger cookies and a folder that he forgot. She finds him in a passionate embrace with a twenty eight year old neurologist/ OW. She goes into labour with tragic results. The pain and emotions are intense. She struggles with feelings of hatred and revenge. The OW uses social media to manipulate the narrative so that she appears to be the compassionate support for the H and the h is the villain who abandoned him. A series of crises force the h and H to work together.
Alina, heavily pregnant, catches her husband, Russell, kissing another surgeon, Olivia. What follows is a traumatic chain of events that changes the course of their family lives.
As a reader, I found myself completely drawn into the way the author narrated Alina and Russell’s distraught relationship, and the impact it had on their kids. Their story kept me deeply engaged, and I felt the overwhelming weight of their distress as they struggled to navigate through the emotional aftermath.
Definitely pulled all the feels .. The author reminds us that forgiveness is not always enough, nor is forgetting. Accountability has its place, but sometimes healing means stepping away from the hate, the grief, the guilt and choosing your children’s wellbeing above everything else.
Not really sure how I felt about this story. It seemed strange she said he could visit the children supervised at MiL house but Then he didn’t??? He started drinking instead and was comforted by OW Was confused
And did he actually sleep with OW or just kiss? No distinction needed cheating is cheating but seemed liked it had been an emotional affair too. But never fully stated.
I’m going to be honest why had she not filed for divorce?? And not sure I could have forgiven him, either. And I hate stories that let cheating other women play victim. Nobody and I mean nobody takes side of OW in those cases. Especially a pregnant women being cheated on nobody would have been on Olivia’s side.
Heroine is pregnant, sees her husband kissing passionately his colleague and has a premature birth. She loses her child. The heroine is devastated by guilt. He starts drinking and self destructing. She hates him because he killed her child. Ow was basically a predator who stalked him for years and when he was tired after a long surgery (he’s a surgeon) she ambushed him and kissed him. And the heroine saw them and went into premature labor. IMO she should have cancelled him but in the end she forgives him because apparently it was just that one time and they didn’t do anything but that kiss. Meh.
This was a really good and heartbreaking book. It had me all in my emotions. I couldn’t imagine going through what she went through, but at the same time he went through hell as well. Yes, it was his own fault and choice, but he still went through hell. He learned and grower majorly from his mistake. I loved how she stood her ground and didn’t make it easy for him. I know a lot of people view how she was handling the kids as wrong, but at the same time she was terrified of losing them as well. She was a mother trying to protect her babies and ended up doing what was right for them in the end.
I'm just not a fan of these books that end without an ending, just a lot of fluffy words and modifiers about life. Words saying something but not. This author likes to have a huge traumatic event happen after a betrayal, that makes the led male redeemable. Not this book so much. There's betrayal but not like in her other books. It's smaller and can be classified as a mistake. Just not a fan..i want an ending, O want to witness the reconciliation. I will probably skip other books by this author because why read a book knowing there isn't an ending?
It was a short story so it was a quick read. He cheated on her, she lost the baby and she spent the book being angry and he felt nothing but self pity. I was waiting for the divorce to happen but nothing happened there and his point of view would made it more interesting. The other woman caused nothing but trouble by spreading rumours about the h and the h did nothing about it and that was disappointing. I would have given this book an extra star if she hadn't took him back and got pregnant again at the end.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Very average book. Repetitive. It started out well, but it lost me when the MiL comes in and says the MMC has fired the woman he was cheating with... how?! So, he gets it on with some woman in the office who he has been emotionally cheating with for months, but somehow she deserves to be sacked and he plays victim to her feminine wiles. Pathetic. I'm also confused as to why it had the FMC name at the top of each chapter because it only ever shared her perspective anyway?! Overall a very unsatisfying read.
Alina is the FMC and the book is written from her pov. So we see her experience her husband's betrayal, her sudden contractions, and even her anguish. I hated Russell from the beginning and didn't quite completely forgive him by the end. I will say that I noticed another reviewer commented on Alina's choice to keep the children from Russell for several weeks. She used them to hurt him; even if part of her believed she was protecting them.
TW for stillbirth. This is the worst betrayal. Powerful beginning; made me so sad for her. The trauma and pain her young children go through is also real. Why weren't they all in therapy? Mom has PTSD. Dad falls off the cliff for what he did to them. There are small errors, like calling her sick son 'her' instead of him. The writing is repetitious and overly dramatic. But it's still compelling. The ending isn't necessarily a HEA but it seems right for the situation this family is in.
This was hard to read but realistic. The emotional journey through the life of betrayal was difficult but the outcome was strength and love. Manipulation is everywhere but you should never bring children into the middle of your heartbreak. This story worked out but not without pain.
The author kept repeating the facts of the relationship over and over and over. I think it was to increase Word count. Because it didn’t add anything to the story. To me the end was unsatisfying. It’s definitely not an HEA story. I felt the beginning of the story was so drawn out and the end was so rushed. I would’ve liked to have heard more at the end.
Hurt. Lots of hurt and hatred. This book is just so raw and empty it did not leave me with much hope at all. I understood her hatred for him and what it cost her, but her hatred was really hurting her children. I was glad she eventually saw that made moves to help them move forward. His grovel was not that great but he really hit rock bottom.
Felt it ended too soon. And had unanswered questions like the gap of time of her visit to the wedding venue…to understand you'll have to read. No spoilers.
The pain was real for the h, and I wanted to hear more from the H’s POV than the little later in the book.
