My doctors at the time gave me three to five years to live, but I’m still going and going strong. My illness has brought me on a journey of health via nutrition and I will be happy to answer any questions that you might have.
WOW, Electric has taken another twist and turn I wasn't expecting and I love it. Gina and the kids are dealing with their loss. Now Gina is mixed up in a bigger mess or two that I think we've just touched the surface of in this volume, Carly touches on some new and exciting twists that I can't wait to see what she does with them. I read none stop, looked down and I was done. DAMN, can't wait for the next edition. GREAT job Carly.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books of the Electric Series by Carly Compass, so it was well worth waiting for Book 4. “The Aftermath” has a perfect title and starts with a bang, hinting at the paranormal elements the author has weaved into the story craftily.
As with the previous books, I loved the detailed descriptions. Every room, every establishment, ever tradition / custom and fact is well researched and presented in a way that makes it come alive. Embellished and personified, the setting becomes part of the story, which is rather rare and delightful.
Of course the people take center stage – and I use the term people deliberately because this time we don’t just see the bigger picture through the POV of the two main protagonists Carly and Vladimir, but we get a glimpse into the head of many characters. It’s a clever move, for this way we know more than Gina and feel with and for her even more.
The story starts with Gina facing the loss of both her husband Brad and her lover Vladimir, and being threatened from various sides. It was heart-wrenching to be by her side through the first ordeals – and the twist the author has added came as a huge surprise thus. Suddenly we’re off on our merry way and everything turns into a roller-coaster ride. I found it very authentic and credible how Compass portrayed the way Gina deals with her grief and new challenges. I also loved the many new protagonists we got to know, as well as the intriguing details about those who had only been introduced in the previous books.
What fascinated me most – apart from the glimpses of the uber-rich, and the net of intrigues that Gina gets caught up in – was the paranormal element to the plot. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but the reader will find a lot of hidden messages and philosophical questions thrown into the mix. While reading, I was wondering many things: What if the end is just the beginning? Or what if there is no end and no beginning but just a cycle of lives, with a chance to leave this earth and progress? Very fascinating, especially for me as a Buddhist who believes in karma and rebirth.
Book 4 leaves us hanging on the cusp of new beginnings and dangers to come, swaying between the burdens of the past, the hopes of the future, and the troubles of the present. Well done, Carly Compass, well done – can’t wait for Book 5!
This is the fourth book in the electric series. which is a well written, intriguing story. I do think readers will enjoy this book more if they grab the first three that came before it. That said, you can read this as a stand alone and fall into the life of Gina Parrot, a mother, wife and a woman with a good job. That is until both her husband and her boss are found dead. Gina is lost and hooks up with the unsavory character of Carlotta and from their readers will find themselves glued to the story that joins worlds in a unique ways. i am eager to grab the next in the series that hooks this life with others out there.
It has been an interesting journey reading these books. It began as a very gentle story about the everyday life of Gina Parrot, a struggling housewife. For a Brit like me this was almost like a voyeuristic peak into small town America. Ironic considering how the story was to develop. One of the things I particularly enjoyed about this series is that the style of each book changes, giving the storyline a fresh perspective each time. In this latest story, Gina has lost both her husband and obsessive lover. The gentle pace of the first book is now a swift flood as Gina is persuaded to go to Chicago by a friend Carlota, a kind of female Sportin Life. Throughout the book I found myself silently screaming at Gina to get away. This character is so well crafted that she is now like a friend, that you can see all to plainly is heading for trouble but they cannot. That trouble by the way has a delightful twist. Do I have any gripes? Yes. This book introduced a new subplot that centres on the deceased characters of her husband and lover. This subplot has a quite distinct style and language of its own which I found a little jarring. That said, this is a five star book and I look forward to reading the next one. Cheers.
Author Carly Compass has surprised me once again. In the fourth book of the ELECTRIC series, The Aftermath, Gina's life takes a turn for the surreal. Reeling from two earth-shattering life events, her outlook appears grim. She faces a life of loneliness, stress, illness and grief with little hope of support from anyone. Furthermore, she's made enemies and looks to be in danger.
The plot developments seen in this latest instalment are improbable to say the least, and the author does an excellent job of relating Gina's bewilderment as she's whisked off her feet into an alien world of high-dining with the rich and famous. There is, however, an ominous twist which sets the scene perfectly for book five. Things aren't as they seem, and the mystery injected into the narrative leaves me keen to continue following Mrs Parrot's story.
Also, the novel has another dimension, one that strikes a chord with me as a reader. Spirituality has been an important theme in the ELECTRIC series, but it has always manifested itself in the form of organised religion. In The Aftermath, we're asked intriguing questions about the afterlife and our role as human beings.
To conclude, I'm mightily impressed by the writer's ability to innovate and reinvigorate her books. This is another fascinating chapter in the life and times of Gina.
