3.25 Standing Up to Your Fears Stars * * * 1/4

Finally His Bride felt more like an adjacent or extra novella to the third book, Bride by Mistake. This due to a couple of factors...

It carried over Luke who had a serious role in the third book.

Part of the storyline had the same scenes from that book, only from Luke's point of view with our added benefit of his additional story arc.

It was only 63 pages long.

However, what it did give was some very cute, funny moments and a love story of Friends to Lovers which worked.

The basic premise is these two best friends since childhood find themselves noticing they are attracted to each other BUT do not acknowledge it for different reasons, as well, as the main one- fear they will lose their friendship if they risk love.

Luke has always been protective of Melissa; she came from a very abusive family causing her to hide and retreat. She learned to stay in her careful environment developing her own cake business. She has become successful on her terms. She finally realizes 28 with no dating experience at all is not normal. She is on a quest to get laid at Grey's and is close to having a drunken Cowboy help her with her goal. Luke comes in, sees what she is wearing and doing. He flips out and quickly gets rid of the Cowboy. Frustrated by Luke blowing up her scheme, she lets the cat out of the bag... her desire to get laid...as she still has her VCard.

Side note- Marietta, Montana has a lot of older gals with VCards.....

As you figured out, Luke does not want to hear all of this or talk about it...But he does comeback to see Melissa after the booze has settled and offers up to be her "try out guy"...In his heart, he cannot let her be with someone who doesn't care for her. This way he can control the experience for her.

Once these two do get together, there is no stopping them except Asshat Luke. He just has so many issues of not believing in himself. His history makes it understandable to a degree... but there are times you want to just smack him.

Melissa was wonderful with Luke when they were in friend mode and she grew as a person realizing it was time to let fear go. She was quick witted and I enjoyed their banter.

The humor was strong in select moments used to defuse the tension and some of the best lines in the book came from these exchanges:

"I do not need protection from penises!"

"It's a penis, Luke, not a poisonous snake."

"Are you....saying you tried to give the lady softserve, Shuller?"

As you can see there were some fun moments for a shorty.There is one more of these stories coming with all the loose ends tying up perfectly in that Marietta, Montana Born way.

~~~ Before Reading ~~~
What do you get with a Headstrong Asshat and a long time Gal pal looking to rid herself of that pesky VCard...
An Asshat Friend who will not hear of it...unless it is him!
This ought to be interesting...
3.5 - "I'm in the market to be taken advantage of." Stars.
The Montana Born Brides series goes from strength to strength with this contribution from Maisey Yates. Luke Shuller had quite a large part as a secondary character in book three (Bride by Mistake), and came over as a bit of an ass, so it was nice to get his story and understand who the guy really is and what motivates him.
"You're better than normal. You're you."
The 'Best Friends to Lovers' is a trope I always enjoy, and Maisey gave Luke and Melanie's story the perfect amount of sweet, sexy and drama. Luke to be honest is still a bit of an ass in Finally His Bride and the story that began between between his Sister Kaitlin and his best friend Beckett in book three still isn't really resolved, at the end of this book. I loved his over-protectiveness for the people he cared about, and as the book developed you understand why he is so bull headed about certain things.
Melanie was a great strong character too, and although she has a few lows in her past, she is moving on and going after the things she wants in her life.
"This is becoming a really bad habit."
"Yeah, but I've also discovered its really effective. So I'll probably keep doing it."
Only a couple of books left in the series now, as a whole it is creeping up my list of favourites with each addition to its numbers.
Well,well,a book where the hero was not a billionaire,mensa genius,and drives a car worth a small country.Instead our hero is a poor working man who owns an automotive garage,is dysexic,did not graduate high school and has his GED.
He is gorgeous and sexy,a plus.The heroine is a baker and has a history of physical abuse from her father.Life long friends with the heroine crushing on the hero,matters come to focus for the heroine at the hero's sister's wedding when she attempted to attract him and he was oblivious,so she thinks.
After a while ,heroine decided to go to a bar and pick up a guy to have sex with and there for ridding herself of her virginity.Enter the hero,he sees her and a guy in the corner attempting to kiss her,he goes over and takes the heroine away and takes her out of the bar slung over his shoulder.
This was a really fast paced little romance with the best friends to lovers trope.I enoyed it,but wished it was longer to really get into the characters and story.When they got to smexxing,really hot times for this couple.3.5****
3.5 stars!
Very cute, very sweet, and somewhat steamy friends-to-lovers romance. I thought the story was adorable and the chemistry between Luke and Melanie is palpable throughout the book. Their transition from friends to lovers wasn't contrived at all.
I wish this was longer though. I would have loved to get more depth out of the story and more fleshed out characters. But other than that, this was a good read overall.
Very quick, cute, sweet romance about two best friends that become lovers. This one takes place at the same time as Bride by Mistake in which Luke's sister and his guy best friend, Beckett, hook-up. There's still no real resolution to Luke and Beckett's fight and that's what I was hoping for.
This was a shorter read so I believe it somewhat took away from further development of the characters.
But I still enjoyed the story. Heroine was sweet but strongand stood up to the hero when needed. The hero I liked for the most part, possessive and sweet, but at times somewhat clueless.
Hero and heroine where friends since forever but at some point in her late teens the heroine realized she was feeling more then friendship for the hero and was becoming physically attracted to him. Hero was protective of the heroine due to her abusive Father. But things changed for him one day at his sisters wedding when the heroine had a certain look (flirtatious) on her face and he started to have dreams about her that weren't "friend like" at all.
a few weeks later their relationship changed drastically when then hero finds her dressed in a hot, short, black dress and she's flirting with a cowboy at a bar. He learns that she is ready to break out of her protected, fearful shell and live. And her first priority is to loose her virginity. Well let's say he has something to say about that.
Their romance was sweet and they had pretty good chemistry. At times there where some slow spots, but okay pacing.
What a fantastic return to Marietta! Yates has created a romance that will spark your interest while sparking some definite heat between the characters. The premise behind the story was both tear jerking and absolutely comical.
Yates has created an unforgettable cast of characters that I loved getting to know. Luke & Melanie were a fantastic couple to get to know. They were fantastic individually, but together they were off the charts. Their combined & separate histories crashes in to their present adventures in such a manner that you get a full picture of who they are. This is one of those stories that I really and truly enjoyed, but would have absolutely loved if it had been a full length novel, giving the characters a bit more time to develop.
Yates has created a story that’s both sweet & sassy. She held my attention throughout and I can’t wait to read more by this fantastic author. I also wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others.
4 1/2 stats in fact. A simple and beautiful story that I enjoyed very much. The hero is superb and the heroine is very strong. The secondary characters do their work well without shadowing the main ones. The only thing is the book is very short!! But the epilogue was sweet and pretty. It's good to read one of my fetish authors in another format which it's not HP.
A quick and funny read about change and the surprises of falling in love. Luke is frustrated. Blindsided at every turn, he wants things to stay the same. Melanie striving to become more independent has made the biggest change of all. A makeover. Luke and Melanie have tiptoeing around an attraction for years. Will they finally make the biggest change and become more than friends? Received a copy of Finally his Bride for an honest review.
Ok read. At first, I enjoyed this book but lost interest when h repeatedly analysed herself and H. I'd rather learned those things from storyline than her words. Felt no connection with both H or h, too. Sorry that I always had higher expectation of friends-to-lovers stories.
I received this book as an ARC from Net Galley for my honest review.
Luke Shuller feels like his life is out of control; his sister has run off with his best friend, and someone stole money from his company. Then when he feels like he wants to go to his favorite bar and relax his only other friend in the world, Melanie Richards, is getting drunk and trying to pick up guys!
Melanie Richards is tired of being the good girl, waiting around for Luke to notice her. After one last attempt she gives up and hits a bar to give up the one thing she holds dear....her V card!
Luke refuses to let Melanie do what she has planned; Melanie refuses to follow Luke's orders. So what does any red blooded male do... he offers to help her get rid of her V-card! Because hey...what could go wrong?
I love everything about the Montana Born Bride series, I love that they keep things fresh by switching the Authors up and I love what each author brings to the table. After completing one of Maisey Yates other books in this series, she has become one of my favorites. Maisey Yates did a great job keeping this book short and sweet with the right amount of heat and fun to keep you intrigued.
I take my hat off to you Maisey for touching on a serious subject in this book without making it heavy. Luke is sexy but is not perfect and has doubts about himself that rang true. His flaws made him beautiful in a very masculine way. It was great to see how a woman like Melanie who is used to being in the shadows, can make a man like Luke who is loved by everyone..but himself..see the truth of who he is, what he has done, and what he could be.
This book right now is selling for $2.99 and I would gladly pay 5.99 for it. Great book, great price, fantabulous job!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Montana Born Brides has entertained fans and readers for the past three books. This third book, while short, is yet another enjoyable love story under the friends-to-lovers trope. I like that world that the series writers created in Marietta. I could easily imagine myself walking into Grey's and running into all the other characters who were already introduced.
When I met Luke in the previous book, I disliked him. If you've read that book, you will understand why. If you haven't, well, you might want to read this first, so your impression of Luke won't be affected much. Anyway, he wasn't better in this book. I still think he's a jerk. However, I really liked the heroine.
I will never get enough of these books with the friends-to-lovers story. The love of my life and I never started as friends, so I'm not speaking from experience. However, I can just imagine how wonderful it must be to fall in love, romantic love, with a person you've already loved and known for a while. I think the heroine was too good for the hero. However, they did have undeniable chemistry. Also, these losers must always have a redeeming factor, anyway, and Luke's redemption was Melanie.
Ever since Tule Publishing gifted me copies of the last four books in this series, I have certainly enjoyed every book, loving the weddings that went on in Marietta. I think that this is one wedding series that really gives good stories. I'd recommend this book and the entire series anytime.
Whilst Finally His Bride is an enjoyable addition to the Montana Born Brides series, it's not my favourite of the bunch so far.
"I do not need to be protected from penises."
This time around we have a best-friends to lovers and although fitting, I didn't feel the the secondary trope found in the previous two books necessarily needed to be used again. But, in keeping with the Tule way and this series, the romance is sweet, both Luke and Mel were endearing and the banter between them was quick, feisty and passionate.
description
Running parallel with Bride by Mistake (Luke is Kaitlin's older brother) did lead to a little repetitiveness in content, but it also explained his pig-headed manner and combined with Mel's strength of determination, this couple's journey made for an enjoyable easy romantic read.
3.5 stars.
Finally His Bride is a nice complement to Bride By Mistake. This book tells the story of Luke Schuller and his best friend Melanie. Mel has always been at least a little bit in love with Luke while for him she's that really special best friend you'll do anything to protect, so when he spots her in Greys Saloon dressed to kill he does what any red blooded best friend would do and throws her over his shoulder, rescuing her from throwing away her virginity on a stranger. Mel is not impressed and so begins their journey.
I liked these two. Not perfect people. Far from it, but there's something comforting about reading about someone else's self doubt and insecurities. Then there is Marietta, the little town where this story takes place. I happen to love Marietta. And finally this is a darned good story, well written, and easy to zip through in a few hours, which is perfect for a busy lifestyle.
Loved this one! An amazing friends to lovers story that was sweet, sexy, and heartwarming. Great characters make this a book you will definitely want to read!
Melanie has always lived her life a bit timid, fearful, and always trying to stay below the radar. She's decided she needs to change that! When Luke, her best friend, finds her in a bar trying to pick up a man he loses it a little. And when she tells him her plan to change her life he is convinced he is the only one who can help her with that!!
When Melanie and Luke met, she was the little girl who had moved in with her grandmother, Mina. She looked all skinny at twelve-years-old with eyes too serious and her arms had bruises. Luke has wanted to guard her against everything ever since. So, when her drunk father went after her, Luke went after him.
Now, however, she’s twenty-eight. She’s tried for years to get Luke to see her as more than just his best friend but as a desirable woman. When at his little sister’s wedding her last attempt didn’t work, she decided to move on to greener pastures.
So, it has been two weeks. Luke is in town to deal with his other little sister and he ends up at the local bar. There is his, Mel with all her curves on display. Which he had never seen highlighted this way before. In a mini skirt, tight top, red lips, and high heels. Kissing up to a drunk cowboy.
Now Luke’s dark eyes are seeing red. He lumbers over and yanks the cowboy up and out of his seat. Letting him know he has not welcomed around, Mel. Mel is pissed. He says let’s go she says, NO! So, he picks her up and throws her over his shoulder and carries her out of the bar. Now, this is his, Mel, who normally wears conservative clothes and shoes. Plays down her makeup because she doesn’t need it. She’s pretty without it. But right now, he has pissed her off.
See how two friends become more or can they? I enjoyed the tug and pull of this couple. How they maneuver a friendship into a romance. But when you come with baggage it leaves scars. Rich, bold characters. Real hurts and scars to deal with. Fear of losing a longtime friendship at stake. I give this: 4 stars. Provided netgalley.com.
**Copy Provided by Netgalley and Tule publishing for an honest review**
This book happens along the same time frame as the book in where his sister Kaitlyn and Beckett get together and have their own problems. It is when he finally notices that his best friend Melanie is more than just a girl, she's a woman, a woman who he wants to protect.
Melanie has always had a crush on her best friend and after seduction at his sisters wedding does not go to plan, she decides that she needs to shake her life up if she is to finally get rid of her virginity. She puts on a skimpy dress and has a few drinks at a pub in order to pick up a man and get it over with. Until that is Luke walks in, see her and acts like a caveman.
Luke does not think well of himself and does not see that he needs to change the way he thinks or it will always be him against the world and having the feeling that he has to fix things for everyone else. Melanie finally cracks into his thick skull what he is doing and missing out on, which hurts both of them.
Another good story based in Marietta, Montana.
Best Friends to Lovers...Can it be More?
Marietta does have a thing about brides...and weddings. This is Mel and Luke's story. Two best friends. Now you tonight know Mel, she is that amazing cake decorator from several Montana Born books. In fact after this book I was craving drake or at the least creaming butter cream icing. So we get to know more about Luke & Mel right off the bat when Luke runs into sexed up Mel at Grey"s and carries her out. Oh yeah friends? Do friends get jealous when other guys hit on their best friends? This is a well written read that lets us catch up with some of our favorite characters from Marietta as well as get cozy with this couple. I would like to say that author Maisey Yates touched on a topic in this book near and dear to me. One I struggle with daily myself as well as both my girls. She showed it with accuracy and compassion. Thanks.
I’d give this one a 3. It’s not Yates’ best but is still better than average. Tropes include Virgin Heroine, Friends to Lovers, Neurodivergent MMC. Both main characters have a lot of baggage to deal with, and they do. It’s not groundbreaking or particularly exciting. The heat level was about a 3/5 as well.
Luke was certainly living in hell right now. His ex-best friend, ex-business partner Beckett knocked up his sister Kaitlin – and she seemed just fine with the entire situation! How Beckett felt after Luke’s fist punched his face might be another story. Luke just didn’t get any of it. And for tonight, he just wanted to get roaring drunk and pass out back in the motel. He was tired of trying to fix other people’s troubles. Except there was trouble in the flesh on the far side of Grey’s bar. Melanie, his friend, the lady he always cared about, protected… on the receiving end of some drunken cowboy’s advances. No way in hell was that going to happen. So Luke stepped in once again to “fix” things.
Melanie was tired of the virgin thing. She was a successful baker, known around the country for her fabulous wedding cakes. She had her own business and she was content with it if not truly happy. Mel was tired of being the scared little girl who’d been abused. She was tired of being protected, tired of looking in on relationships from the outside – but mostly tired of waiting for Luke to see her for the woman she now was. So if Luke wouldn’t pay attention then she’d find someone else to rid her of this pesky virginity and get on with living not waiting any longer. That was the plan until Luke showed up, scared away her cowboy and walked out of Grey’s with her on his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. Oh, he was in a heap of trouble now.
I was so happy to finally have Luke and Melanie’s story told. Admittedly, Luke came off as a hardass in Bride by Mistake (my review link), and I certainly wasn’t a huge fan of his – although I could tell he was in a lot of hurt himself and hoped his story would be told next. Not sure then if I felt he deserved his own happy ever after, but I felt for the guy on some level.
And I was right, in that there was a lot more to Luke than meets the eyes. I adored Melanie, she was tired of being afraid and took her bravery firmly in hand and went for what she’d always wanted – Luke. It took Luke a frustratingly long time to finally admit that he was being a jerk. Oh, he’d build walls and had reasons (read excuses) for how he behaved, but it took being hit full face with Mel’s love before he started to even begin to think he might need to give up some control over other people and start working on himself.
Finally His Bride is a story of coming face to face with yourself and being brave enough to change in order to get the absolute best out of your life. I’d recommend this one for long time love story readers, anyone who appreciates a happy ending for someone who up until the very last moment you aren’t sure if they deserve the happiness they are about to get. (maybe that’s a bit mean, but Luke was a first class ass for the majority of two novels – he only gets so much slack from me *grin*). Pick this one up and sit back and enjoy the journey. I sure did.
*I received an e-ARC of Finally His Bride from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
Unusually for a Tule multi-author series, this latest offering from the Montana Born Brides series really does follow on from the last book ( Bride By Mistake). Luke is the older brother to the previous heroine and spends much of this book growling and gnashing his teeth over the fact that his sister has been made pregnant by his ex-best friend and that is a Terrible Thing! Truthfully, Luke is a bossy, pig-headed, stubborn fool who should spend less time telling everyone else what to do and sort out himself first.
Luckily for him, his other closest friend, Melanie, is on hand to divert his attention. Melanie has been attracted to Luke for years, but childhood issues and the risk of losing his friendship have always held her back. Those same issues have also held her back from relationships, and now, at twenty-eight, she’s finally decided it’s time to stop holding back and get out there. After all, she doesn’t want to be a virgin forever and it’s clear Luke will never notice her. Until he does, of course, and things take a steamy turn for the… well, hopefully better.
This is a sweet friends-to-lovers tale dealing with a stubborn man and an awakening woman. Both of them are riddled with fear, but only one of them has the clarity of mind to realise it. I liked Melanie, she’s nice and straightforward and bakes cakes for a living (why is everything I’m reading lately to do with food? It’s a good job I don’t really like cakes or I’d be the shape of a balloon by now). She’s also not afraid to call Luke out on his unreasonable behaviour. In fact, it’s only thanks to her that Luke has a hope of appearing human at all.
She also says one of my favourite lines during a romantic declaration ever: “If you’re throwing around the love word, but you’re not going to apply it to me, I’m pretty sure I’m well within my rights to punch you in the face.” Aw, she says the sweetest things.
As for Luke. Well, since I adored Bennett from the last book so much, he was unlikely to ever fully win me over, so I’m not surprised that he didn’t. He really is just too bossy and take-charge, while remaining blind to his own troubles and faults. His double-standards with regards to sex were so irritating, but Mel doesn’t let him get away with it – actually she doesn’t let him get away with much of his idiot-behaviour, though he still manages to pull some dumb stunts (garlic bread springs to mind). However, there is hope for him and he does have his good points. It’s clear that he does genuinely care about his sister and Mel, and his insecurities relating to his dyslexia definitely made me sympathise with him. When I wasn’t shaking my head and tutting.
In all this is another good tale from both Marietta and the Montana Born Brides series. There’s some delicious chemistry here, some steamy scenes, a lot of psychoanalysing, a few blunt home truths and plenty of enjoyable romance. Another great addition to the series – can’t wait for the next one!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I read this book merely days after finishing Bride by Mistake, which I really liked. I already wrote that I planned to read the other in the Montana Born Brides series and I was really happy to be approved for an ARC for the next one. Luke was a secondary character in Bride by Mistake and while he acts like an asshole, you feel there is so much more to him than that.
Luke is a control freak. He needs to control as much things, persons he cares about, events as he can. He's determined to fix every problems the people he cares about have and he's sure he has The way to go. He's not so keen on fixing his own problems. Melanie is his best friend, the equivalent of a little sister he needs to protect, even from himself. The problem is Melanie is tired of living life halfway, protecting herself and being protected. Luke has to deal with the fact that maybe, just maybe, he's the least likely to hurt her.
The MCs have a lot of bagages. Melanie comes from an abusing family. Luke has stupid - my word - parents who measure a person worth by the diplomas hung on the wall, something he doesn't have. The story is told in a way that you want to cuddle them and slap them behind the head to wake them up. It's like seeing your little sister and your little brother acting weird. You love them and want them to finally find the way to get it right. This story is sweet, sexy, great AND a friend-to-lover story, what's better than that?
Maisey Yates and Nicole Helm did a great job together in the multi-autor series. It's not my first foray in this kind of series, I'm actually addicted to them, but it's the first time I feel like there is a real desire to get it right. Some scenes feature in both Bride by Mistake and Finally His Bride and they are the same - not in the feeling and the pov but the dialogue is exatly the same. You feel like you finally get to see those moments from the pov of Luke, which is beyond great. I have to be up-front : I gave this book 5 stars, but it wouldn't be the case without the third book of the series. Nevertheless, as a stand-alone, it's still a 4 stars book, so don't worry. It wouldn't be as enjoyable, but still a fantastic book.
I received an advance copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review:
Melanie Richards may be the most kick-ass virgin in love with her best friend ever. And her sass and strength totally made this friends-to-lovers work.
Earlier, I reviewed another Montana Born Brides,Bride by Mistake, featuring Luke's sister Kaitlin and his best friend Beckett. Just from the little glimpse I got of Melanie there, I got the sense that she would be Luke's downfall. And boy, did she take him down.
When Luke met Melanie, she was a fragile battered child recovering from her abusive father. Ever since then, he's been her protector and friend. Only now Melanie has decided she's sick of pining for Luke and wants to get over her damaged past, once and for all. First step: losing her virginity to a stranger. And that's when Luke goes all caveman and tries to stop Melanie. I loved that she stood up to him:
"Um...excuse me, asshole, I'm twenty-eight. Not eighteen. Not eight. I'm a grown woman and I will make my own damn decisions, even if they're bad, and you'll deal with it. Or you won't. But they aren't your decisions so it isn't your choice."
So of course, like any good romance hero, Luke decides he will be the one to take Melanie's virginity. And the aftermath terrifies him:
Luke had been holed up in the bedroom since Hymenpocalypse. Probably for the best, because she either would have cried on him or tried to seduce him again and really, she shouldn't do either.
Luke and Melanie decide that the sex is so good that welp, they might as well keep doing the deed. But only as friends. And that never works well in Romancelandia.
Luke is stubborn, and quite frankly sometimes a stubborn idiot. But it is Melanie's strength of will and strength of self that gets him to realize how blind he has been about himself and love and Melanie. I love how Melanie isn't blinded by love or lust for Luke enough to say things like:
"You fucking coward! I'm standing here exposing my soul and you can't even pull your head out of your ass and look me in the eye."
Melanie rocks. And because she does, the HEA rocks, too.
So somehow this book was linked to Nicole Helm’s Bride by Mistake. This is the story of Luke, Kaitlin’s brother and all of his inner turmoil.
The story had a good start with Melanie trying to pick up a drunk cowboy in a bar as a means to lose her virginity and stop pining over her best friend Luke. Enter Luke, unaware of Mel’s feelings towards him and he swoops in to save her from a savages clutches. This of course starts a whole new slew of drama as Melanie resents the knight in shining armour act and Luke can’t understand why she rejects his protection. Big brother complex much?
There is an obvious chemistry with these characters from page one and this leads on to witty banter and fun anecdotes as Melanie continues to speak her mind and Luke continues to be dumbfounded.
I always love a strong heroine and Melanie does not disappoint. She pushes back and doesn’t take flak from Luke. The fact that they grew up together and have a shared history also heightens their intimacy. Although, I would have liked to get deeper into this as the story only touches on their pasts, both individually and together.
I did feel that the love and romance aspect fizzled out a bit after the initial physical connection but it didn’t take away too much from the book.
Overall, a fun, light feel good read.
The blurb reads:
